Health and wealth

The first wealth is a healthy body. You are the primary doctor for your own body. True health cannot be purchased; it must be cultivated. Modern life has separated us from nature, making basic protections like clothing necessary. Human life is guided by four essential goals. Dharma is a principle of reciprocal protection: protect it and it protects you. Artha is the material means for basic sustenance, not excessive wealth. Excessive planning for the future is futile, as you cannot control the destiny of others, even your children. Destiny is preordained, though wise counsel may delay its course.

"Health we cannot buy; we can only gain it."

"Dharma rakṣita rakṣita: if you protect dharma, dharma will protect you."

Filming location: Strilky, Czech Republic

You know your body because you have lived in it for so many years. Only you know your body best—its habits, its feelings, its limitations. Everything. Therefore, I think we are the first doctors of ourselves. If we take one or two months to listen carefully to the body, then we can do many things for ourselves. That is also yoga. In Ayurveda, it is called Pehla śuk nirogī kāya. The first happiness, the first wealth, is good health. Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health. East, west, north, south, above, below—all directions exist only if you exist. If you are not there, no direction exists. So your being is primary. Pahala sukha nīrogī kāyā: the first happiness is a healthy body. Who is happy in the world? Not the rich man, nor the poor man, but the healthy man. And health we cannot buy; we can only gain it. Spirituality we cannot buy; we can only gain it. The health we buy is temporary and artificial. That is like our car not functioning, yet we push it to reach the petrol station. That is all. So, pehlā śuk nīrogī kāyā. Dūḥkha śoka gharma māyā. Money, property, material goods—enough that you are able to welcome a friend anytime, that anyone can come, and you can offer them food and a bed. It does not mean being rich, but we should have enough because the human way of life has completely changed. It does not matter what our background was, whether we were monkeys or not. Some say monkeys, some say gorillas, some say something else. They say some monkeys were lazy, they did not eat enough, so their heads grew bigger due to many theories. As they say, "Kolik je úst, tolik je slov, tolik je příběhů" (As many mouths, so many words, so many stories). So it does not matter how we came or what our background was; we are here, and this is our way of living. It is not natural anymore. If we spend one night without clothes under the trees, by morning we will have pneumonia or malaria. We have stepped out of nature. We have developed other arts of life, so we are used to dressing. Dressing is not only for the beauty of the human body but also for its protection. You should wrap your body, but give it a chance to breathe properly. This does not mean wearing very short dresses; it is better not to wear them at all. What they call a half-meter cloth—you have one rock. How poor you were, not able to buy two meters. But dress is for protection. In Hindi we call it aṅgarakṣak—the protector of the body. So everything: eating, pots, way of sleeping. Even if you say, "I am a yogī, I don’t need anything," still you need to eat something. Therefore, dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa—these are the four puruṣārthas, the human goals. Humans should realize these four things. Dharma rakṣita rakṣita: if you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. If you cannot protect dharma, dharma cannot protect you. For example, the dharma of the eyes is to see. If they do not see, the eyes have lost their dharma. Because the eyes see and help you, it becomes your dharma to protect your eyes. Then the eyes will protect you. But if you cannot protect your eyes, they will not protect you. Dharma urakṣita rakṣita ha. Artha, material means, is that you have enough to eat. So that we have enough to eat, so that we have enough to eat, so that we have enough to eat, so that we have enough to eat, so that we have enough to eat, so that we have enough to eat. O Lord, give me that much so that my family can live, so that we are not hungry or starving, and so that whoever comes to our door does not go hungry. That is all. Otherwise, more wealth is a burden, a sorrow, and a cause of fighting. So dujā sukha gharme māyā: the second happiness, or comfort, is wealth. If you ask in India, "How are you?" it is the language of farmers and wise people. Bhagavān dává chleba, dává jídlo: God gives enough chapati and dal, or bread and butter. Now what do we say? We introduce ourselves: "I have that company and this and that." Já mám tadyhle tu společnost. We give advertising to find a wife or husband, a big house, a big Mercedes car, and so on. And then they say, "Wow, I need such a husband. I am 85 years old, looking for a young wife." There you will see the queue because they want to get rid of the husband quickly and have the money. That is life, human nature now. When we used to ask, "What is your name?" the villager would say, "Name has only God. This body is known literally, and then tell this name." This is the answer from what they call an illiterate person. I do not know if they are illiterate or not, because we liberated one, but did they? Without asking the name, we say, "Good morning, sir, I am doctor so-and-so," or "I am engineer so-and-so," "I am minister so-and-so," "Good morning, I am inspector so-and-so." This is talking your ego. Still, nobody asked you your name, and you are also so-and-so. That is the difference. That is the humbleness. There you can see where the border of knowledge is. So it is said: as long as you did not speak, you were wise. From only two sentences, you can gauge how deep the water is. So wealth makes your life and your children happy. But do not collect too much, because you can give birth to a child, but you cannot give the child its destiny. You can build a house for the child, but you are not sure if that child will live in it. Very often, parents give all their money and effort for this room and that apartment. And that very dear Hanička, only 14, says, "Ahoj, ahoj, Tatinka, I will not come home today. I will stay with..." friends. And you never know where they will go. All your plans remain empty. They are happily married, perhaps, or a good profession brings them somewhere else. There is no one who can clean that apartment. So before you plan, do you know? Otherwise, it has no sense. So do not make sorrow. Who gave the peak will give the foot. Parents can give birth, but they cannot give destiny, because you come with your destiny. Your destiny is already decided, whether you know it or not. There is no way to escape. Only one thing: if you follow the advice of a wise person or Guru-vākya, then perhaps they can delay your destiny.
