Svabhava

One's intrinsic value, or sva-bhāva, determines all benefit and happiness. Those who habitually find fault in others cannot be happy in any relationship. This nature is like a price; the object does not change, but its value fluctuates, dictating gain or loss. Your bhāva towards God, your master, or your family is your real benefit. Mere external change, like iron turning to gold, is useless if inner qualities remain sharp, heavy, and unyielding. Only the hammer of the Guru's knowledge can strike and transform these ingrained traits. Without changing this core nature, prayers go unheard. One must learn to filter perceptions into purity and adjust to situations, not complain. The fly seeks dirt, while the bee would rather die than land on it; their inherent nature differs.

"Can you change the attitude without changing the sva-bhāva? The current will not change; the cause will not change."

"Only the one who has the pain understands. Only that person, that creature, knows what the pain is."

There are people who are always searching for mistakes in others. Whatever you say, they will say it is wrong. Such people will never be happy, and this is a problem for many. They cannot have a happy family, a happy partner, or a happy marriage. This is your sva-bhāva. Sva-bhāva. Bhāva. Bhāva means value. It is your own intrinsic value. Bhāva means the price. And you know, the benefit lies in the bhāva, in the price, not in the object itself. For example, today gold costs 20,000 crowns per kilo, and tomorrow it becomes 50,000 crowns per kilo. The gold did not grow even half a milligram. It is still one kilo, yet you gain 30,000. This is because its power, price, and value increased. Conversely, if tomorrow it becomes 1,000 crowns per kilo, you lose 19,000 crowns. The gold did not decrease; it is still one kilogram. How did you lose? The bhāva fell. So, what is your bhāva like? What is your bhāva towards God? That is your benefit. What is your bhāva towards your master? That is your benefit. What is your bhāva towards your wife or husband? That is your benefit. What is your bhāva towards your parents? That is your benefit. These are the external bhāvas. But svayam bhāva—the values of the self—here we translate as one's nature. We say ādat, meaning habit. Though one knows one is guilty, it is a habit. Therefore, people sometimes say, "Please don’t take it so seriously. I told you, but forget it." This is very important. Can you change the attitude without changing the sva-bhāva? The current will not change; the cause will not change. It is said there is a stone, pāras (the philosopher's stone). When you touch this pāras stone to iron, the iron becomes gold. The iron became gold, but its qualities did not change. How can this happen? Consider a knife made of iron. If you touch the pāras to the knife, the knife will turn into gold. The gold is changed; the iron is changed. Pārasaṅg luha kyā kāñcan bhai talavāra? The iron is brought to the pāras, and the sword became golden. But three things did not change. It became golden, yet three bad qualities (avaguṇa) did not leave: its sharpness (so when it hits you, it hurts), its weight, and its form. So, though the iron changed into gold, three qualities did not change, rendering it senseless. Similarly, you may change your life, become a yogī, wear a mālā, wear different clothes, or become a sannyāsī. Now you are gold, but still the inner quality did not change. Then what is the use? Therefore, Dhyāna Haṭhorī Hāthale—take the hammer of knowledge in hand. Chathguru Bhayasonār—the Guru became the goldsmith. Ek mār esī mārī—hit in such a way, Mitgaī dharā ākar, aur mār—and with that strike, all three things changed. Everything changed in one beat. All three avaguṇas changed in even one beat of the Gyāna Haṭhorī, the hammer of knowledge. What is it? Guruvākya (the Guru's word). Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said, "How dear to me is this vachan (these words). Others will not understand. Only I know. But how can I explain to others? They will not understand, but you understand." Only the one who has the pain understands. What is the pain? Lagī, lagī, sab koī kahī. Lagī, nahī, ligar. Everyone says, "Oh, I am hit by something." No. But those who were pierced through and through by this arrow—that is it. When someone is injured, we can say, "Oh my God, that must be terrible, painful." We imagine, we are sorry, we are sad, but still you do not know what that pain is. Only that person, that creature, knows what the pain is. When you kill an animal for meat... God said, "You can eat anything. What you take in the mouth does not make you dirty. Then take poison, go to the toilet, take it in the mouth—that will not make you dirty." So do not turn the words of God upside down. That's it. Only the one who is caused that pain, who is caught by it—Bāchanvālā Lagesā—knows it. "How dear to me are these words. Only I know. Only I know how to explain to others. Because they will not understand. That is very dear to me." That's it. That is love. That is divine love. That is confidence. That is faith. That is bhāva, pure bhāva. So forgiveness is a bhāva. Svabhāva: merciful—it is your svabhāva; you are merciful. Or cruel—your svabhāva is so cruel; you are cruel. So what kind of svabhāva do you have? And this svabhāva becomes your nature. Gurujī always said, habit is the second nature of a man. So, there are some people who like to complain. They always like to see the negative. No matter what you ask... "How do you like it?" "Oh, it’s okay. It’s good." "Do you like eating here in the ashram?" "Yes. Three more days left. It’s okay." These are your inner negative qualities. You will never be happy in your life, anywhere, if you have not learned to accept situations and turn negatives into positives. You are the filtering machine. You can filter into purity. And from that purity, you can filter into divinity. And from that divinity, you can develop into unity. Otherwise, be sure you can pray a prayer, make saṅkalpas thousands of times, and cry in front of God many, many times, but no one is listening. It is your sva-bhāva. What to do? We always wash our horse or donkey nicely, and after, we must take care that it does not go where the sand or dust is. When a fly mistakenly sits on sandal paste, and someone makes dirt somewhere, the fly will fly away from the sandal paste and sit on the dirt. Like this, a sinner, a foolish person, does not listen to satsaṅg and good words. They hide, sleeping, or say, "No, let’s go." But the honey bee will never sit on dirt. If she sits on dirt, that means her death. She will die hungry but will not sit on the toilet. That is the difference between the fly and the bee. Both are flies, but the guṇa, the svabhāva, is different. So what you are doing here—sādhanā, anuṣṭhāna—is to change your svabhāva, to adjust your life according to situations. If you have a choice, change it. No one is against it. But do not suffer. "Did you sleep well?" "Yes, but in the neighbor’s room, someone was telephoning. At 11 o’clock, the window was open, and I couldn’t sleep. Please don’t use mobile phones in your rooms, only in the gardens." "Did you sleep well?" "Yes, but again, my neighbor’s room, someone was snoring so loud. I was hearing it through the wall. So please, those who snore should sleep on their stomach. Or we can put snoring people in a snoring room." Certain things, of course, are difficult to get used to. And what about your husband or your wife when they snore? But we should try to adjust, you know. We are one family. We should change our sva-bhāva. This morning I was speaking about Svādhyāya, and now it is Svabhāva. Sleep time.
