Svabhava

A spiritual discourse on transforming one's inherent nature and value.

"Therefore, take the hammer of knowledge in hand... the True Guru became the goldsmith."

"We always wash our horse or donkey nicely, and afterward, it goes to where the sand or dust is."

The speaker delivers a teaching on svabhāva, or one's intrinsic nature and value. Using analogies like fluctuating gold prices and the philosopher's stone, he explains that real spiritual benefit comes from inner transformation, not external changes. He emphasizes that changing this core nature through spiritual practice (sādhanā) and the Guru's word is essential for true happiness and divine connection, advising listeners to adjust their attitudes and filter negativity into purity.

There are people who are always searching for mistakes in others. If you say one thing, they say it's wrong; if you say another, that's also wrong. Such people will never be happy, and this is a problem for many. They cannot have a happy family, a happy partner, or a happy marriage. This is your sva-bhāva. Bhāva means value, price, or worth. It is your own intrinsic value. The benefit lies in the bhāva, in the price, not in the object itself. For example, today gold costs 20,000 crowns per kilo, and tomorrow it becomes 50,000 crowns per kilo. The gold did not grow even half a milligram; it is still one kilo, yet you gain 30,000 crowns because its value, its bhāva, increased. Conversely, if tomorrow it becomes 1,000 crowns per kilo, you lose 19,000 crowns. The gold did not decrease; it is still one kilogram. You lost because the bhāva fell. Is this how your bhāva is? What is your bhāva towards God? That is your benefit. What is your bhāva towards your master? That is your benefit. What is your bhāva towards your wife or husband? That is your benefit. What is your bhāva towards your parents? That is your benefit. These are the external bhāvas. But svayam bhāva—the values of the self—here we translate as nature. We say ādat, meaning habit. Though one knows one is guilty, it is a habit. Therefore, people sometimes say, "Please don't take it so seriously. I told you, but forget it." It is very important: change the sva-bhāva, change the attitude. Without changing the sva-bhāva, the current will not change, the cause will not change. It is said there is a stone called pāras (the philosopher's stone). When you touch this pāras stone to iron, the iron becomes gold. The iron became gold, but did its qualities change? What can happen through it? There is a knife made of iron, and you touch the pāras to the knife; the knife will turn into gold. The gold is changed, the iron is changed. Pārasaṅg luha kya kāñcan bhai talvāra—the iron brought to the pāras, and the sword became golden. But three things did not change; it became golden, yet three avaguṇas (bad qualities) did not leave: its sharpness, the fact that when it hits you it hurts, and its form. So though the iron changed into gold, three things did not change, so it has no real sense or value. Similarly, you may change your life, become a yogī, wear a mala, wear different clothes, or become a sannyāsī. Now you are gold, but if the inner quality did not change, what is the use? Therefore, take the hammer of knowledge in hand—dhyāna hathorī hathle—the hammer of knowledge took in the hand. Chathguru Bhayasonar—the True Guru became the goldsmith. Ek mār esī mārī—hit in such a way, mitgai dhara ākar and mār—all three things changed. Že změnil všechny ty tři vlastnosti—everything changed in one. All three avaguṇas changed even with one beat. Všechny ty tři avaguṇy se změnili jediným úderem—all three avaguṇas were changed by a single blow. The beat of the Gyāna Hathorī, the hammer of knowledge—to kladivem poznání. What is it? A co to je? Guruvākya—the Guru's word. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said: "How dear to me is this vachan (these words), jak soume drahá slova mestra—only I know, to vím jenom já; others will not understand, ostatní to nepochopí, ményi žánu—only I know, jenom já to vím. I know, but how can I explain to others? They will not understand, but you understand." Only that one understands who has a pain. What is the pain? Lagī, lagī, sab koī kahī. Lagī, nahī, lagī—everyone says, "Oh, I am hit by something, no." But those who are caught by this arrow go through and through, that is it. When someone is injured, we can say, "Oh my God, it must be terrible, painful." We imagine, we are sorry, we are sad, but still you do not know what that pain is. Only that person, that creature, knows what the pain is. When you kill an animal for meat ... God said you can eat anything; what you take in the mouth does not make you dirty. Then take poison, go to the toilet, take it in the mouth—that will not make you dirty. So do not turn the words of God upside down. That's it. Pain—only that one knows who is caused by it, caught by it—bachchanvala lagesa. "How dear these words are to me, only I know. Only I know how to explain to others, because they will not understand; that is very dear to me." That's it. That's love, that's divine love, that's confidence, that's faith. That is bhāva, pure bhāva. So forgiveness is a bhāva. Svabhāva—merciful—means it is your svabhāva; you are merciful. Or cruel—your svabhāva is so cruel; you are cruel. So what kind of svabhāva do you have? And this svabhāva becomes your nature. Gurujī always said, "Habit is the second nature of a man." There are some people who like to complain; they always like to see the negative. It doesn't matter what you ask. "How do you like it?" "Oh, it's okay, it's good." "Do you like eating here in the āshram?" "Yes, three days more left, it's okay." This is your inner negative quality; you will never be happy in your life anywhere if you have not learned to accept situations and turn negatives into positives. You are the filtering machine; you can filter into purity. And that purity you can filter into divinity. And that divinity you can develop into unity. Otherwise, be sure, you can pray a prayer, make saṅkalpa thousands of times, and cry in front of God many, many times, but it will seem no one is listening. It's your own sub-power; what to do? We always wash our horse or donkey nicely, and afterward, it goes to where the sand or dust is. Then we have to take care that it doesn't go there. When a fly mistakenly sits on sandal paste and someone makes dirt somewhere, the fly will fly away from the sandal paste and sit on the dirt. Like this, a sinner, a foolish one, does not listen to satsaṅg and good words. They hide, sleeping, or say, "No, let's go." But the honey bee will never sit on dirt. If she sits on dirt, it means that's her death. She will die hungry but will not sit on the toilet. That's the difference between the fly and the bee. Both are flies, but the guṇa, the svabhāva, is different. So what you are doing here—sādhanā, anuṣṭhāna—is to change your svabhāva, to adjust your life according to situations. If you have a choice, change it; no one is against it. But don't suffer. "Did you sleep well?" "Yes." "In the neighbor's room someone was telephoning at 11 o'clock, and the window was open, I couldn't sleep; please don't use mobile phones in your rooms, only in the gardens." "Did you sleep well?" "Yes." Again, "My neighbor's room, someone was snoring so loud, I was hearing through the wall. So please, those who are snoring, they should sleep on the stomach side. Or we can put snoring people in a snoring room." Certain things, of course, are difficult to get used to. And what about your husband or your wife when they snore? But we should try to adjust. We are one family; we should change our svabhāva. This morning I was speaking about svādhyāya, and now it's svabhāva. Sleep time. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
