The Eternal Dharma: Understanding Our True Nature

The eternal dharma is the innate nature and function of all existence.

Dharma means the inherent duty of everything. The body's dharma is to be born, grow, and die. A tree's dharma is to sprout, grow, and produce seeds. Fire's dharma is to give heat; eyes' dharma is to see. Every sense, season, planet, and element has its own dharma. This dharma is eternal, existing since creation. Protect dharma, and dharma protects you. Going against nature brings suffering and nature's revenge. What is called religion today is sectarian teachings of saints. These sects create division, jealousy, and conflict. The human body is a battlefield of dharma, with ego and greed as inner enemies. Senses, especially taste and gender, are hard to master. The heart works ceaselessly, keeping its dharma; if it stops, life stops. Spirituality is the pursuit of purity, leading to cosmic consciousness. Do not convert with money; convince through love and understanding. Every creature is part of the universal one. The four aims of life apply to all creation. Everything grows towards the light, moving from darkness to light. The soul has no gender; karma determines rebirth. Fanaticism is wrong dharma; use discrimination. Follow the body's dharma to realize the divine within.

"If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you."

"Do not go against nature. Otherwise, nature will take its revenge."

Part 1: The Eternal Dharma: Understanding Our True Nature We are in Vape, Hungary, and from Vape comes Vapecast. It is a beautiful country, Hungary. We are in beautiful nature, at the Agriculture College. It has a big ground, about nearly 50 or 100 hectares of land, with very old trees, protected trees, a protected forest. And I think it is a very unique experience to be here and to practice yoga and lead a life. We dedicate this program to spirituality and religion. In Hindi or in Sanskrit language, religion has different meanings. That will be called dharma. And dharma is something which is by nature in it. Dharma of the body is to be born, to grow, and to die. The dharma of the tree: the seed sprouts, becomes a nice plant, grows into a full tree, gives seeds, and then dies. Dharma of the fire is to give heat. If fire would not give warmth or heat, we would not call it fire. It is a fake flame, an effect flame, wrong, artificial, an effect. The dharma of our eyes is to see. If one is blind, we will say this person does not have eyes. Every indriya, every sense, has its dharma. This planet has its dharma. Every season has its dharma. If winter does not bring us snow and cold, we will say, "Oh, this year we did not have winter." If summer will not give us nice, warm weather, we will say, "Oh, we did not have a summer this year." So, the plant gives the blood, the bud, the flowers, and comes the fruit, and gives the seed, and it is continuing again, the dharma. So these four pillars of life, Dharma, Artha, Kāma, and Mokṣa, are not only applied to humans. But everything that is created on this planet. There is a purpose, there is some sense in why a tree is growing. Where would this tree like to go? And everything grows towards the light. The seed, when it begins to sprout under the ground, is also searching for the light to come out. That light is the aim, the goal. And we also say, "Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya," lead us from darkness to the light. So, keep your dharma. Means, keep on functioning. So, what you have accepted, dhāraṇā, what you have adopted, that is your dharma. So this is the explanation of the Dharma. And therefore, this Dharma is known as Sanātana. And Sanātana means eternal. This eternal Dharma has existed in the universe since creation began. So, this dharma is given to everyone and to everything. Every planet has its dharma. Every star has its dharma. Every element says it is its dharma, so that is its dharma. Therefore, in the Vedas it is said, "Dharma rakṣati rakṣitaḥ." If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. Mahāprabhujī said in a golden teaching, do not go against nature. Otherwise, nature will take its revenge. And it will be you who will suffer the consequences. And that is what the whole world is now thinking: how to protect nature. We abused nature. We destroyed nature. We manipulated nature, and now we do not know what to do. It is that pollution created out of the human mind. And mental pollution is the most terrible pollution. You know, everyone now, it is a human’s ambition and greed. They drill a hole somewhere in the ocean in Mexico, searching for oil. So as long as they were drilling, it was under their control. But it was against nature; it was against. And now the reaction is very strong. We still do not know how to stop. So this is greed. So out of greed, we can destroy ourselves. In the German language they say, "Selbstmord mit Gabel und Messer," suicide with the fork and the knife, meaning eating, too much eating. And why you eat too much is greed, and that greed, though you are not satisfied with your way of life and health and everything, but you are the slave of it. So if you have not mastered this thing, then what have you mastered? There is one person who likes very much to eat spaghetti and everything made out of some flowers. It means eating, eating, eating the whole day like a machine. Now she has so many kilos. Of course, the knees are suffering, the ankle joint is suffering, the hip joint is suffering, the back is suffering. I told her to go on a phalāhārī diet, but there are a lot of excuses: "My blood pressure goes down, this happens, that happens, I cannot." Now, the doctor decided or advised her to tighten her intestines so that she cannot eat too much. You see, so you have to go for an operation. And your intense times, it will be tightened with the rubbers, so there will be only a small hole. I think a buffalo is better than such a person, or a goat. There was a king who announced, "If someone can bring me a goat which has a full stomach and does not want to eat anything for a while," no one succeeded. But there was one farmer who thought, "I will become a king. My goat is very nice, and she follows my instructions. Before coming to the king, I will feed her a lot, very much with the green leaves and this." And it is only for two minutes, standing near the king, that is all. And I am sure my goat will be able to stay two minutes without eating something. And I will have a kingdom. So he was feeding and feeding his goat, and the stomach of the goat was like a drum, and he came to the king and announced, "My goat is a beautiful one, and she is a goat which is satisfied, a content goat." So the king said, "Yes, bring it in." So he brought in a nice goat. And the king had a very nice, fresh salad in his hand. And he put it on the table. The goat came straight to the salad. The king said, "Please take your goat back." So this mind is a goat, and the senses of eating are a goat. It is very difficult to control. One yogī said, in this body, we have ten senses. But out of these ten senses, very rare yogīs have them under control. But you cannot trust the two. They can disappoint you at any time. One is the taste of eating, and the other is gender. So, this means that you are a slave of your senses. Eating is not a problem. I think Śiva was eating, Viṣṇu was eating, Kṛṣṇa was eating, Brahma was eating, Lakshmi was eating, Jesus was eating. If he was not eating, then why was he sitting near the dining table last evening and giving the bread to everyone? So, there are some people who said, "Oh, he or she does not eat anything." And? Do not eat, that is all. It is boring. Not to eat and not to drink is boring. So that also should not be. So even God was eating and eating already. But they all were vegetarian. Jesus was dividing bread. He did not divide the chicken, or Krishna always dividing the butter, not the sausage. So, sāttvic food and controlled food. Now, the dharma of the stomach or intestine is to digest everything. And to send the energy, or the minerals, the vitamins, and so on, to different parts of the body where it is required. So one cannot be without dharma; you cannot live without dharma. This pump, the heart, is one of our best friends or servants. 24 hours, he is working correctly. Does not matter if you are running, diving, cycling, eating, dancing, singing, sleeping. Our heart is keeping its dharma. And if he keeps up his dharma, what about you? Everything is gone. The heart stops. Everything stops. So, dharma is not understood as, at this time, people understand religions. This religion, what we believe, different people in different parts of the world, is a teaching of one’s sense. And that is called sect, sectarian. And this sect comes from a saint, a saint. A saint. The holy person. A saint who had some extraordinary abilities and knowledge. And that is limited, so also it means a sector. So this is your sector, this is my sector. This is your territory, this is my territory. This is your master’s words and teachings, and this is my master’s words and teachings. So, at present time, what we believe religions to be, they are the teachings of a certain holy incarnation or prophet or something like this. Of course, in that teaching there are the morals, the ethics, the nature, the protections, the love, the devotions, all of which are the principles of yoga. So, the practice of yoga means to protect your body’s dharma. To fulfill your human life’s dharma. So in this way, when we speak about dharma, it is not the sectarian things. The Christians believe Jesus’ teachings. The Buddhists follow Buddha’s words. Buddha was a Hindu. Buddha was a Hindu. His father was a Hindu king. And Buddha was a very, very divine personality and was following ahiṃsā. Even when he was walking, he had to walk so carefully that he did not kill any ants under his feet. Pure vegetarian, follower of ahimsa. The Prophet Muhammad was a vegetarian. He was a Hindu Rājpūt. Sanātana Dharma, what they call the Sikh religion, like their gurus, they were Hindus. The Jainas, they were saints, they were Hindu. So in reality, all is the same. That is called Sanātana Dharma. And everyone, they saw the right way for their disciples. But we disciples have jealousy, and we disciples have our ego. That my master is the best, my God is best. And there is our misunderstanding, and that is why around the world there is conflict. And so-called that they do not follow their path, the footsteps of their leader or the master. So for many people, the head of their religion, originally that God or incarnation of the prophet, has just become a rubber stamp. For the Christians, Jesus became just a rubber stamp, a cross, that is all. How much do you follow? And did you really, with very awareness and conscience, did you read the Bible? You had no time to read it. You had no time to think over it. Actually, there are only 16 miracles of Jesus; that is all. All in all, about sixteen. And repeated again and again on different occasions, with different events, different things happened. But there is great knowledge inside. Love inside, understanding inside, mercy inside. We are praying for mercy to Jesus or his mother, Mary. How much mercy do you have? If you have no mercy, you are not a Christian. Sorry. Now, ask me, "What are you?" You are just a human being struggling to find perfection. And similarly, if you read the Qur’ān, it is great. The great things are written inside. If you understand and follow. And the same Rāmāyaṇa, Gītā. But they said only Kṛṣṇa, they said only Rāma, they said only Buddha. So has duality, so-called this kind of thinking of religion, we divided religion. And divided religion means we divided humans. And that is wrong. For the sake of your religion, do not give someone any kind of temptation. People are giving money to people to change their religion. We can just be on the list that we are more than other religions. So it is the biggest problem in the world. Converting people with the power of money. And I used to say, we do not convert, we convince. Believe what you believe. Be there what you are. So, not converting, convincing. That brings harmony, understanding, and love. So, such principles, the protection of that and their energy is spirituality. Because it is functioning, it is perfect, it is pure, it is healthy. And that will lead us to that cosmic consciousness. And for that, human life is given. Every creature has its dharma, every tree has its dharma. Every stone has a dharma. Every river has a dharma. But humans have this intellect to understand and follow the dharma. Do not follow the dharma emotionally. Do not follow the dharma that someone, oh, that person is great. That means fanaticism. And that is fanaticism, that dharma is a wrong dharma. There is discrimination. Therefore, be as you are. God is within you. That Ātmā is within you. And to realize that dharma has been given to us. And that dharma is our body. And therefore it is a dharma-kṣetre, kurukṣetre. Dharma kṣetre, the field of the dharma. A dharma meze ye, harc meze ye, is this body. And all the Pāṇḍavas and Kauravas and Kṛṣṇa and whatever you call, these are our different functions in this body. Our ego is the Duryodhana. Our greed is the blind king. Our ambition is the Bhīṣma, and so on. So this is the battlefield, constantly there. There never has been like that, and there never will be like that. There was never any battlefield like that before. And it will not be anymore. But it is there. That is your life. So you will be again not like that here. Part 2: The Universal Dharma and the Path to Purity Maybe you will be born somewhere else, with a different skin color, different hair color, perhaps a different gender. I asked many ladies, “Would you like to be born as a man in your next life?” They said, “No, my God, Swamiji, what do you think?” And I also asked many men, “Would you like to be a female in your next life?” No question. What do you think? So we have also this ego, but you never know. The soul has no gender; therefore, it is your karma that determines where you will come. So you will never be equal to how you are now. It is very unique. And this war of the religion within you—all senses, all thoughts, all intellect—this is the religion. But it was not given to you to fight. It was given to you to get help. A boat is given to you to cross the ocean. The boat was not given to you to dismantle it in the middle of the ocean. So that is what I want to tell you, and we will continue again. Okay? We will have one bhajan. Om Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai. So quickly you finish the bhajan. One more bhajan. This bhajan. Om Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai. The cameraman, did you show the nice view outside? Yes, show the nice view outside. Don’t show my teacup. He never knows. Thank you, girls. This is for all who are sitting in this corner. A lot of work is coming on. Oh, my God. Nice work. Something is coming. The Gospel of Judas, and so on. Very good. And Gyān Gaṅgā, very nice, beautiful, everything. Very good. So, some questions came, which I would like to answer already. The question from Jyoti from Maribor is asking about something the ministry has changed in the school, paying some money, and this and that, and supporting the Jadan school. They would like to do it, so you are welcome to do it. Education is very important. And it is like that in India, we have a lot of educational activities. And what we give to our disciples or our people, students, to help is without any condition. Also, people have the fear that someone will give you money and change your religion. So-called Christian missionaries have created a lot of problems already, and with money they are rapidly changing their religions. And many people are afraid to accept the help. So what we are doing is, we don’t register these people, their students’ names, family names, and addresses. We just support them. Boys, girls, also medical support we are giving. I must tell you that all international devotees were helping to build the hospital in Jadan. It is finished, but it is very difficult to get the doctors. You can’t imagine. India is not a poor country. If one thinks India is poor, then this person must be two hundred years behind. And Indian doctors, unfortunately, only would like to be in big cities. And Jadan is a small village. Dr. Shanti has been struggling for the last one and a half years to find a doctor. No success, or they ask so much money that we can’t pay them. So if some of you are doctors and would like to give volunteer service for one or two years for the poor people, we will be happy. Otherwise, after one year, if it is not successful, then I will turn this hospital into a yoga hostel, a yoga āśram. So there will be constantly yoga seminars with ten or fifteen yoga teachers employed instead of doctors. And people will be accommodated in that hospital and other buildings. We expect about two to three hundred yoga practitioners, so this is unfortunate in the condition. Dr. Shanti is not true, what I say? Yes. Now, Dr. Shanti, she is a dentist, you know. So, you know, everyone ultimately goes in that direction, toward what one has achieved. So, Dr. Shanti and Dr. Savitri from Slovakia, at least they’ve created a dental practice there. Two days a week, one dentist also comes. So, you are welcome to come for making your cheaper treatment there. It will be cheaper; the ticket and everything will still be cheaper. So what I want to tell you is that what we are doing, that money should really go to that purpose. Seventy-five percent of India is in drought. And every year, about three to five meters, the water level goes down. The question is water. And especially in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and many, many parts of India, there is no water. So, through your help, I am providing to save the three thousand deer in the forest. Three thousand deer. Deer? Deer. And thousands of birds, including the peacocks, are organizing to bring water with tankers somewhere in the forest and put out water so the animals can go and drink. And in about twenty different villages, I’m providing drinking water for the people and for the animals. So, more than about fifty or seventy tankers per day. And one tanker costs us about seven euros. I hope this project will run only twenty days more, because then the monsoons will come. And also, some kind of feeder for animals. When we see here, when we go out of this hall, so much grass, so much green. And in Rajasthan, you have to fly with the helicopter to see somewhere if there is some green spot. Everything is fresh green, everything is all grass, or dry grass, nothing there, only earth and what you call the tornadoes. Yesterday in Jādan, it was 48.5 degrees centigrade. 48.5, can you imagine? So, we need help for such things. And, of course, for the education too. Thank you very much. Dear Swamiji, if you could please give me a spiritual name, thank you very much. Ines Demirovici, beautiful name you have already. But we can call you Mīrā. It doesn’t matter who is who, okay? You are Mīrā. Thank you. There is one question also coming from Debrecen. One person, her name is Geetā Devī. And her daughter, or someone, is in the hospital and having a transplant of the lungs, as I understand. So my prayer to Mahāprabhujī is for her protection, that the operation will be done successfully, and for her recovery. That’s it. These are the three questions which I had. Now we continue further: dharma, religion, and spirituality. So the religion in the way we understand it is not a dharma. The dharma is the creation, and each tree has its dharma. Each pond has its dharma, the ocean has its dharma, every drop of rain has its dharma, and every organ of the body has its dharma. Mame vaso jīva loke jīva bhūta sanātana. Kṛṣṇa said, “I live in every creature.” I live in this loka where the jīvas are. Jīvā Bhūta Sanātana, and all are mine. They are mine. They are part of the universal one. So, dharma should not be understood as what you call sectarianism. It doesn’t matter if they are Christians, Hindus, Jews, or anyone. And their teaching is great; we have to understand. And many times, there are certain sentences added to it. So where you can’t understand, you are confused, that must be somehow manipulated. So you see the Bhagavad Gītā. The entire Bhagavad Gītā is written in the Sanskrit language. And that Sanskrit language is such a perfect language that you need not change anything, and if you change something, it will not fit in it. Immediately, we’ll say this is not the Bhagavad Gītā’s words. You have a good body, now they change your hip joint. Normally we don’t see. But in an X-ray, you will see there is a replacement of the artificial hip joint. So, wise persons like all of you, when you read, you will say, “Yes, this is something wrong.” It cannot be that way. And you put in the X-ray machine of your viveka and your intellect, you will find it is not correct. So this one advantage we have, that all old scriptures in India, and India was written in that language, the Sanskrit language, which is very perfect. But there are a lot of commentaries written in different languages on that subject. And then, for commentary, it depends on the days and the call, the situation, the time and the place. I told you sometime in Sanskrit, horse also has a name called “sendā,” and the salt is also “sendā.” And there was a horse. And the translation has to be done: what is the sandal, horse? So I was in the kitchen and was surprised to see there is no sandal. No salt. The other rod opposite is correct because in the kitchen there is no sandal. Sandal is a horse. The horse is on the horse table. So, there, with the translation, we make a mistake. You may know the Hungarian language very well. But you cannot translate a particular book from a different language. You should have knowledge of the subject of that book. That’s why many people are writing yoga books, but they have no knowledge about yoga. And so, yoga has become a football. Everyone is kicking here and there. About half a year ago, somebody asked me, “Swamiji, what do you think about wine yoga?” I said, there is nowhere written in the scriptures, “Wine yoga.” But tonight I will consult with Mr. Patañjali in meditation. But you can tell me, what is that wine yoga? They say, now it’s getting very famous. There is one man who developed teaching yoga, and he called his yoga “wine yoga.” It means when you come to yoga class, you get a glass of wine to drink. Before relaxing, you get a glass of wine, and after the class, they all sit together and drink wine. So I told that yoga school will have a lot of practitioners. So, you know, without knowing the subject, there’s a misunderstanding, and conflict comes. Similarly, in religion, all religions are very good. All holy books are perfect. What is not good is our self, that we do not understand, and our ego is too big, we do not accept. So it has become something, competition, that how many members I have, or how much money I have, that is it. Otherwise, the dharma is completely different from this. So dharma is the universal dharma, sanātana dharma. And we have to learn from that. Your brain is functioning. That is dharma, the dharma of your brain, and that is sanātana. Your heart is functioning, your kidney is functioning, every gland is functioning, that’s it. So what kidneys can do, your heart cannot do. And what your heart can do, your brain cannot do. Similarly, varṇa vyavasthā, the management of society: what the goldsmith can do, the blacksmith cannot do, and what the blacksmith is doing, the goldsmith cannot do. So there are many, many things to understand, to keep everything going properly. So, dharma and spirituality. Then spirituality comes. Spirituality means purity, the pure. So we have to come to that purity. And that purity can only be cosmic consciousness, the Brahman. That can only be the sun. Nothing can reach the sun. What will melt will melt. What disappears will disappear, what will burn will burn. What can come close to the sun? Only one, the truth, that is purity, that Ātmā, that Ātmā Jñāna. So that will follow if you will follow, protect the dharma of this planet. Wish you a very good morning still. A very good lunch, yes? Lunch. And good rest. You know that everyone has to come to every program. No excuses, except for one parent. If you have children, the father or mother should look after them. If you have two small children, of course, then the father and mother, they both can. If you are ill, we have an ambulance number; go to the hospital. If you have no interest to practice, we have the timetable of the train; go home. Why did you come here? So, theory, tons of theory is nothing. Grammar practice is much better. Everyone who came here, according to the timetable program, you have to attend the programs. Except for the person who is working in the office or in the kitchen. That’s it. So it doesn’t matter from which country you are or which organizer you are. And first, the organizers have to be practicing. And all you who are so-called yoga teachers, they have to come to become a yoga teacher. Next time, if you know you can’t come to programs, then don’t come here to occupy the place of somebody else. And send a message to all your friends. Every program, it doesn’t matter, here, Strilky, India, anywhere. Yes, that’s it.
