Fighting within family -- from the Mahabharata

The true nature of relationships is revealed in conflict and inheritance. Reality is only fully known after death, so one should not hurry toward it but enjoy life. A story illustrates this through familial strife over a throne, where blindness and ambition lead to plotting and exile. The heirs were forced to flee into the forest, hunted by their cousins. When their enemy was captured by jungle tribes, the eldest heir ordered his brothers to rescue him. His brothers protested, arguing their enemy's death would solve their problems. The eldest insisted this was not correct and not Dharma, stating that conflict is between them, and if a third party intervenes, they must fight for their enemy.

"The fighting is between us—between Duryodhana and us. If a third party becomes involved, we must fight for him."

"That is not correct, and that is not Dharma."

What is reality? You will only see that after death, not before. So do not hurry to see it. Enjoy a long and healthy life. The elder brother, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, was blind. It was suggested that our king should not be blind, so they chose his youngest brother, Pāṇḍu, as king. Dhṛtarāṣṭra could not digest this; he could not accept it because he himself wanted to be king. That is one story. There is a different story of Rāma, and of the Mahābhārata. There you will see the love of brothers. In any case, there was much fighting, quarreling, and intrigue. Karṇa, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and others indirectly tried their best to kill the five sons of Pāṇḍu. Dhṛtarāṣṭra tried to have them killed. Pāṇḍu died. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said, "I may be blind, but my son is the firstborn, and my son should become the prince and the next king, the heir to the throne. My son is not blind, and he should be the heir." He did not want the son of Pāṇḍu, the eldest Yudhiṣṭhira, to succeed. Then you can see what happened in the family. You see the true nature of your relatives—your sisters and brothers—when your father and mother die. Then, for the heritage and property, the truth comes out and you see how they fight. They tried to take everything from the Pāṇḍavas. The Pāṇḍavas even had to disappear and escape into the forest, hiding for some time. But Duryodhana was searching for them to kill them. In that era, it was truly jungle everywhere: a smaller human population and more wild animals and forest. There were also people living in the forest, jungle people, who were very strong. They caught Duryodhana in the jungle, kidnapped him, and wanted to kill him. The Pāṇḍavas received this message. The eldest brother, Yudhiṣṭhira, ordered his brothers to go and free Duryodhana from these jungle people. The younger brothers, like Arjuna and Bhīma, said to Yudhiṣṭhira, "Brother, what are you saying? Duryodhana is our enemy. He wants to kill us. Because of him, we must now live in the forest. And you tell us to go and help him? Let him die. Let him be killed. If the jungle people kill him, all our problems will be solved." But Yudhiṣṭhira said, "No, dear brothers. That is not correct, and that is not Dharma. The fighting is between us—between Duryodhana and us. If a third party becomes involved, we must fight for him. I am fighting for him."
