Two Types of Maya (Part One)

The purpose of yoga is the development of consciousness and spiritual awakening, not for gaining powers. Health must be balanced, but consciousness is primary.

Māyā, as illusion and delusion, presents constant temptation. It changes form to match personal weaknesses like money, taste, or passion. This tricky force ultimately abandons its victims, leaving them lost and powerless, causing failure in human life. Yet existence within māyā is unavoidable. One must live within it but not be defined by it, like a lotus in water.

"The primary aim is the development of consciousness and the awakening of spiritual energy—not for siddhis or perfections."

"Māyā is the water, and we are the lotus. The lotus cannot live without water; it must live in the water. But the blossom, the flower, is always above it."

The purpose of yoga practices is the development of human consciousness while maintaining balanced health. It is very important to have physical, mental, social, and spiritual health in equilibrium. However, the primary aim is the development of consciousness and the awakening of spiritual energy—not for siddhis or perfections, nor to gain supernatural powers or siddhis. There are two kinds of māyā: illusion and delusion. Be sure that on the path of human life, there are many temptations of māyā. Māyā changes its form very quickly into whatever form you like. It searches for the weakness in a human being, according to their hobbies or habits. For people who love property or money, māyā becomes money. For people who love eating, māyā becomes a particular taste of food. Passion, desires, anger, jealousy, and hate are all supported by māyā. Māyā is a close friend of the dead. Therefore, this māyā is very, very tricky. For a man, māyā becomes a woman, and for a woman, māyā becomes a man. In the end, māyā leaves you alone. It makes you helpless, powerless, lost, and alone, and then it goes away. So those who are victims of māyā are lost. They fail in their human birth. Yet we cannot live without māyā. That is another problem. Māyā is the water, and we are the lotus. The lotus cannot live without water; it must live in the water. But the blossom, the flower, is always above it.
