Speciality of the Vajrasana

A teaching on the spiritual and physiological significance of the Vajrāsana posture.

"This is an āsana that shows respect and upholds the dignity of culture. Vajrāsana brings clarity to the heart and mind."

"After every meal, if you can sit for a few minutes or 10-15 minutes in Vajrāsana, you are doing a great service to your body for digestion."

An instructor explains the profound benefits of Vajrāsana, or the thunderbolt pose. He describes it as a universal prayer posture that balances the body's energy channels (nāḍīs) and chakras, particularly the Āgyā, Anāhata, and Maṇipūra. The talk details its physical advantages, including straightening the spine, improving oxygen intake, aiding digestion, and alleviating issues from cramps to headaches. The instructor contrasts it with Sūrya Namaskāra, recommends it as a complement to Vīrāsana, and advocates for its practice despite contradictory advice from conventional medical sources.

This is an āsana that shows respect and upholds the dignity of culture. One must protect the dignity of every culture. Vajrāsana brings clarity to the heart and mind. When Muslims pray and Christians pray, it is a prayer in Vajrāsana. When Hindus perform āsanas, it is also in Vajrāsana. Thus, Vajrāsana holds great meaning. The nāḍī that runs from between the big toe and the second toe is also an acupuncture point. This nāḍī touches three main points in the body: the Āgyā Chakra, which influences our consciousness, our vṛtti, and clarity. From the Āgyā Chakra, two streams flow from both its petals. Through the Sūrya Nāḍī, it enters the Heart Chakra, the Anāhata. Thus, the heart muscles relax, the heartbeat normalizes, and the heart's function is regulated via the Sūrya Nāḍī—the right nostril channel that goes to the heart. The Chandra Nāḍī is the left one that comes to our navel, the Maṇipūra Chakra, which is a fire center. The heart is a water center, or a moon center of emotion, and this emotion is neutralized with the sun. The fire chakra, Maṇipūra, is neutralized through the moon. In Sanskrit it is said: in the moon there is a pūrak of the sun, and in the sun is the pūrak of the moon. "Pūrak" means to put something in, to mix, to unite. So, through Vajrāsana, our Maṇipūra Chakra—our jāṭharāgni, our solar plexus—is automatically balanced. Nervousness, anxieties, and emotional problems are balanced in the heart. Disturbing thoughts are cleared, clarity arises, and you gain concrete visions and balanced thoughts. That is why, before beginning the Khatu Praṇām, we must sit in Vajrāsana. There is a significant difference between Sūrya Namaskāra and Khatu Praṇām. People think they are similar to Sūrya Namaskāra. Of course, a donkey and a horse look more or less similar, but if you look carefully, there is a difference. Yes, between a cat and a lion there is a difference, though they are of the same family perhaps. So it is with Vajrāsana. When we sit in Vajrāsana, our Vajra Nāḍī becomes uttiṣṭhat—our Vajra Nāḍī becomes active. When the Vajra Nāḍī is active, many systems in the body are balanced. Now, let us consider the spinal column. Without any effort, automatically, the spinal column becomes straight. When the spinal column is straight, many problems are solved. What happens when the spine is straightened? The entire diaphragm relaxes because the ribs are in the right place and the chest can expand freely. When the chest can expand freely, breathing capacity increases and we can inhale more oxygen. Without food we can perhaps live a few weeks. Without water we can survive several days. But without oxygen we cannot live even a few minutes. Oxygen is very important for our body and brain function. The oxygen we take in through our breath, we also take in with our nourishment. But meat and eggs and such have no oxygen; this is dead food. When you eat the dead, you produce dead matter in the body as well. Raw food, salad, fruits, and different vegetables not only contain vitamins but also contain oxygen, and that supports our body. Thus, our body is able to take in more oxygen because the spinal column is straight. When the spinal column is straight, it affects not only the respiratory system but also allows the digestive system to relax. When the digestive system is relaxed and aligned, the workers in the intestines work faster. Put your ear on someone's stomach; you will hear how many workers are working inside, how many water channels are running, and the click, click, ... click. Sometimes they are so loud, though the body is well-covered and Mother Nature has made it soundproof. But sometimes they are so loud you can hear everything—the sound of the stomach. That is why it is advised that after every meal, if you can sit for a few minutes or 10-15 minutes in Vajrāsana, you are doing a great service to your body for digestion. So, anyone who has gastric problems, any troubles, digestive issues and so on, should sit in Vajrāsana. Practice Vajrāsana for one month. Make this your work, and then you will become a devotee of Vajrāsana, like a devotee of the Sonamukhī. It is said that when you practice Vajrāsana for a longer time, you can solve many heart problems, blood pressure problems, and it is also said that even diabetes can be solved. Why? Because then your Maṇipūra Chakra and the entire digestion will function well. People who have constipation and have to take medicine, after practicing Vajrāsana for one month, will forget the medicine because Vajrāsana will help you all the time. Now, for those who have problems with veins and cramps, it is a blessing because when you do Vajrāsana, there will be a suppression, a massage, and that will improve blood circulation. While coming here, Radha told me that those who have cramps should not do it. I said, "No, no, they must do it." So she said, "Then medical books must be rewritten." So be it. Do you think what is written in medical books is always correct? And do you think what is written in yoga books is always correct? You don't know if it is really written by some experienced expert. So they are right and they are not right. They are right as a book, but maybe they are not right as a practice. It is always individual cases. So, for your cramps and if you have problems with your veins, Vajrāsana will help you. Vajrāsana is a blessing. Now, for those who have pain in the neck and shoulders, this part of the body—if you sit in Vajrāsana, the pain will disappear. Why? Because your whole trunk, your spine, is straight and your back muscles are relaxed. So your shoulders are completely relaxed. When the shoulders are relaxed, all problems are gone, and your neck is okay. When your back muscles, shoulders, and neck are relaxed, and circulation is good and oxygen is good, then what you call those who have headaches from time to time, migraines, could also be helped through Vajrāsana because of the Vajranāḍī, which is very much connected to the head. So your headache, head problems, could be solved by Vajrāsana. Those who practice Vajrāsana have a big appetite. They enjoy good food, and though they enjoy more food, they do not gain the kilos. That is a plus point. So after eating, you must sit in Vajrāsana for 15 minutes. Now, the technique of how to do Vajrāsana: both big toes are touching each other, or slightly over-crossed—only the big toes. But someone crosses the whole feet like this, and that is wrong. You must sit only on the heels. Utkaṭāsana is very good, and you all know it. A supplement to Vajrāsana could be Vīrāsana also. A complement to Vajrāsana can be Vīrāsana. "Vīr" means the hero. It makes you strong. It is an āsana that strengthens you. Vīrāsana takes away anxiety. Vīrāsana helps with fear—indescribable fear, which you cannot explain, what kind of fear you have. It helps with inexplicable fear, worries, and nervousness. There are some people who have problems with the ears. We who do not have problems with the ears can thank God. If you do not have a problem, the sound in your head is one way. If you have a problem, it is a sound like this. So, there are some people who constantly hear some sound. It is very unpleasant. Only they know what this terrible sound means. Only those who suffer from it know what it is like. But you will not believe it: Vajrāsana can solve that problem. And also troubles with the eyes—you will then see better. Thus, it is one in all and all in one: Vajrāsana. Everything is in Vajrāsana and in Khatu Praṇām. Because Khatu Praṇām stimulates the energy in the body. Vajrāsana is one of the best postures which supports our immune system. Vajrāsana supports the entire immune system. That is why we write in the effects of Khatu Praṇām that it improves the immune system. So Vajrāsana is something exclusive. Today you have an exclusive sit in the Vajrāsana bridge.
