Explanation of bhajans SUNO RE MENA and SUNO RE SUVA

A symbolic dialogue teaches that worldly joys are fleeting, while spiritual practice leads to eternal union. A parrot couple in a beautiful park shares daily spiritual discourse. The male advises the female that sensual pleasures are a poisonous, temporary mirage compared to the immortal nectar of divine connection. He warns that death is ever-present and separation is inevitable. True togetherness is achieved only by realizing the oneness of the soul through mantra repetition and devotion. Despite the teaching, both parrots still enjoy worldly fruits, illustrating the mind's distraction. Ultimately, they commit to spiritual practice, merging into oneness at dawn.

"Enjoy in prayers, in bhakti, in repeating the names of God. There is a joy; the joy is there in spirituality. This is the essence of life."

"Therefore, let us do something so that we will be ever together. That can only be if we lead a spiritual life, so that we will unite in oneness."

This is a beautiful, symbolic bhajan composed by Mahāprabhujī. It is a dialogue between a couple of parrots. They lived in a magnificent park, like the one in Strilky Ashram—vast, spanning over two thousand hectares. The climate was perpetually pleasant, like parts of Australia or Ireland, with warmth, rain, sunshine, and blossoms all year round. Different trees bore fruit in different seasons. There were many bushes, lovely ponds, and waterfalls. The landscape was colourful and filled with many creatures: other birds, parrots, cockatoos, kookaburras, peacocks, and swans in the lakes. It was truly beautiful. This particular couple was very spiritual. They lived peacefully in a beautiful nest within an old, large tree trunk. Every night before sleeping, they would have satsaṅg, sharing their experiences of the day: what they did, whom they met, and the various circumstances and situations. Sometimes he was jealous of her, and sometimes she was jealous of him. That is life, family life. One should expect all this. In spite of everything, life is beautiful. There is a story within this story. There was a human couple, a husband and wife. The husband was an easy-going person with a very big heart. If he saw a poor person, he would give them a lot of money. If he saw someone with an old or broken bicycle, he would go to the market, buy a new one, and give it to them. When the neighbour's washing machine was too noisy, he bought them a new one. But his wife did not like this at all and was always angry. Every third day he would do something similar, and his wife would say, "Why are you doing this? You are crazy!" He was a very calm man and would reply, "It doesn’t matter." She would insist, "It does matter for me. It does matter." The situation became so bad that I suggested he get a divorce. He said, "Well, doesn’t matter." She retorted, "You see, I knew you would say 'Doesn’t matter.' Even I am not a matter for you." He replied, "That’s not right, but as you like." For nearly three months, she did not speak a single word to him. Sometimes she did not cook, so he said, "Doesn’t matter, I will go to a restaurant to eat." She said, "No, you cannot do that until we divide our property and get divorced. You have no right to go to a restaurant; whatever you spend is half my money." She locked the door and put the key in her pocket. So he went to the kitchen, cooked whatever he found, and said, "It doesn’t matter." She was furious. The situation was unbearable. She said, "I don’t even want to see your face." He replied, "It doesn’t matter." One day, he had a minor accident and was taken to the hospital. She went to see him. He was lying there in a serious condition. The doctor told her it was a critical case, and she began to cry. She held his hand and called the doctor, saying, "Whatever it costs, please make my husband well. I cannot live without him." He opened his eyes and said, "It doesn’t matter what happened. I cannot live without you." Then they embraced each other. That is how they made up and went home. You see, quarrelling in a family is a common thing. When a person goes away or dies, only then do you realize what they meant to you. So, family quarrels are healthy. The best is if they are not quarrelling. And, of course, perfection is if they have no one to quarrel with. That was a story within the story. So, the parrot couple was happy and having their satsaṅg. One day, they were sitting on a beautiful branch of a nice tree. On another tree, a little lower, there were many fruits. During their satsaṅg, she flew away and sat on a branch with a ripe mango. She began to suck the mango juice and then came back, exclaiming, "This is fantastic! Delicious! Tasteful!" The parrot said to her, "Listen, Menā. Listen, Menā." (Menā is the female parrot, and Sua is the male. Menā also means 'dear one.') He said, "Sunori Menā, oh my Menā, listen. Enjoy in prayers, in bhakti, in repeating the names of God. There is a joy; the joy is there in spirituality. This is the essence of life. Jag kar bar sabhjot. The rest, all the paraphernalia of this world, is unreality." She looked at him, listening carefully. He continued, "You are flying from one branch to another. You are wandering here and there, and you are eating poisonous fruits. This joy of saṁsāra is poisonous. Who knows what will happen in one second? No one knows. And the kālā, death, will take you away. You will be the victim of death, and you do not know when. So, every second, thank God that we have happy seconds, happy minutes. Things go so quickly, you cannot imagine. When an accident happens, it happens so quickly that you hardly have time to notice. And when you notice, it is too late. This can happen in any field of life, even while sitting comfortably at home. That is all. Kāl, the death, Yama, the king of death, is moving over our head. Kāla Cakra, the wheel of death, time, is searching. Ek palak kī kyā khabar hai? Kāl legā lūṭ. Death will take you away." She was making gestures as if enjoying the fruits. "You are blown away by your ignorance and pride, wandering here and there, but these fruits and this joy are nothing but disappointment, unreality. It is like a mirage. That is it. Very soon it will be finished. This youth, this youngness you have, is just like morning dew on the grass. Before sunrise, at dawn, drops of water appear on the grass. But as soon as the sun rises, they vanish. So this life and this energy for life are just like the morning dew. That is all. If you think that is everything, then you are ignorant. You do not know how the whole day will be—how hot, how many sandstorms. You do not know. Therefore, do not think of these two hours of morning, but think of the whole day. That is life. We do not know when we will go." The Sua tells her, "Sua kai sun seleriji, Seleriji darling, a dear one. Listen. This juice you are enjoying is unreal. It is not real. Enjoy the real juice, and that is God’s name." "There are different kinds of milk. 'Cow' here means all animals—cow, buffalo, goat, sheep, and so on. The second is the milk of your mother. Pak je mléko matky. The third is vegetable milk. But there are four kinds of milk. This is a question: one milk is from the cow, the second is from the mother, the third is from vegetables. From what is the fourth milk? Which is the fourth milk? The fourth milk is wisdom, the name of God, that makes you immortal and will make you day by day younger. That is called Amṛt. Therefore, Holī Gurujī said, 'Prakāś puñj Amṛt ke.' Śrī Guru Dīpa Hari Mahādānī he Prakāś puñj, immense of light, the ocean of nectar. Siddipa Hari Mahadani, the great giver, giver of greatness and blessings, is Mahāprabhujī." "So, oh my dear Menā Salari, all this juice you are enjoying is unreal, my dear. Listen, how nice it is to be with you, to have satsaṅg. But you know, when we will separate from this forest—it means one of us will die—that is true. Who knows who will go first? We have to go, my dear. We do not know if we will come together again—when, where, and how we will meet again. She is his very dear one, and he is her very dear one, and we do not want to lose that one. But stories like that, like the poem I have told you many times, 'pavan udāya'... A leaf falls from the branch, and the wind, the storm, takes it away. Now, when will the separated ones meet? They will fall somewhere far away; this separation will come again together? That leaf will not come again and hang on that branch. The branch is alone, and the leaf is somewhere alone. That is the condition. If we will be here together again, we do not know. Peer bichṛe in bāg se phir milnā ho ki na ho. O my dear, when we will separate from this park? Will we come together again or not?" "Therefore, let us do something so that we will be ever together. That can only be if we lead a spiritual life, so that we will unite in oneness, so that our ātmā will become one. All the karma we have, we still have to work; we cannot lie, and we cannot vanish our karmas through tricks. So let us do something: that we depart together, or you wait for me—I am coming, hurrying—or I will wait for you, you hurry. It will be. Therefore, repeat the mantra. Say always, 'Tell that I am that which I am.' De dunyane put, keep all these worldly things behind you. Turn towards the Ātmā. So’ham, that I am. I am that. That I am. Through this, we will realize that one is the Ātmā. Iktā. One is. Then we will not separate. But if you have not realized this, one is ekta, then again we will separate. Guru Caraṇakamala Satsaṅg Mejī, in the satsaṅg of the master's prajñā, amṛtā braksha phalajana. That is an immortal tree and the fruits of immortality. We are all sitting here. We are all like one tree. And the trunk of the tree, which is holding, is Gurudev. And the fruit of immortality is that wisdom which you have, which Guru Vakya gives us. Enjoy this; that will give you immortality. Śrī Dīpā Hariyā kaitā hai jī, vohī svarga veṅkuṇḍa. And Mahāprabhujī says that that is the svarga, or veṅkuṇḍa, or heaven." She was touched very much. Truth is truth. And she began to say, "So’ham, so’ham, so’ham." But she was busy in her housework. He made a sound, "kick, kick," and then flew away and sat on another mango to drink its juice. She looked on, thinking, "Oh, ho." Anyhow, he went with his friends, flying with them. After a long time, he came back, and they had dinner together again. Each of them brought some peace, and they shared it with each other. These parrots have great love. They are very faithful. Animals are very faithful, and they have great love. They are happy; they smile. Birds smile also. Only humans sometimes cannot smile, and humans cannot wait for something. That is why they are suffering. She saw him. He came home and had dinner. Afterwards, again, they were sharing how the day was. And she said to him, "O my dear Sua, tu rakle so’ham nāma, you also repeat the so’ham, so’ham, so’ham. Jeb tere ghar kī, your own tongue, lage tere nahīṁ kasūdām, it doesn’t cost you any money. So, oh my so’ham, oh my dear, you should also repeat so’ham, so’ham. Kočka smṛti khajāv se, she will eat you. Kar sī kām tamām, she will finish all your purpose in this world. So the death is the cat. That cat is waiting behind the door. 'Little mouse, come out.' So it will finish everything. And she, within no time, will destroy this case. And you will see that she chews your skin and your flesh. So therefore, do not wait for anything. Say So’ham, So’ham. Man sohaṅ tan piñjarare, ātmā sohaṅ nām." So here is the answer of the whole bhajan: Your mind is the suva. He is the mind. Our body is that cage in which this mind is there, and ātmā ślokaṁ nāma. Your ātmā is the ślokaṁ mehar kare. Gurū Devajīta jada pāve viśrāma. When the Guru’s kṛpā will be there, then you will realize perfect rest or happiness. Therefore, my dear Suva, meditate on God. You have this chance to do so. This life is a chance for us. It is a golden chance. Do not miss it. Many things happen in our life, good and bad. But the most terrible tragedy is that we will die without realization, and we miss the chance. Now we do not know. 'Again, we will meet together' means the human life. This chance is very, very valuable. Hari bhajale avaśara milare ut śubha aruṣyam. Therefore, get up early in the morning, and in the evening also, sit and meditate. Suno re śuwa, tu ratle so’ham nāma. O my dear śuwa, listen. Repeat 'So’ham.' Jīva, tere ghar kī pyārī lagyat nahīṁ kasūdā. My dear, it is your own tongue. It doesn’t cost you money. Jagat bhāgyācā sukha śīrṣe, you know, this worldly park will dry out. You should know that all this is unreality. There will be nothing left for you. Śrī Dīpā Kāhī Sattva Mahāprabhujī said, 'Believe me, it is true. Santa śaraṇa sukha dhāma, in the presence of the holy saint, is the place of happiness, ever happiness. Veda santa upadeśa batāve, so even the Vedas, saints, and preaching tell this. And all who are explaining, and the destination of everyone, is this: to find that peace, that immortality, and that oneness.'" So they said, "Let’s go to the market and buy a mālā." And so both had a mālā. And Sumarani hanging in their mouth, repeating the mantra. And flying, one day, a beautiful time came: Brahmamuhūrta, dawn. And both of them decided just to fly, and fly, just straight up, and they both merged into oneness in the light and became one forever. Therefore, it is said: when I was here, he was not here. And now he is here, but I am not here. Because the street of love is so narrow, two cannot go together, walk together. Two have to become one, and that one is ekobrahma dvitināsti, so that only one is the reality, and where the two is the non-reality. So this was the essence of this bhajan, the śaṭsa. So, mānavatā tanapinjarā, this mind is the śūnya, and this bhakti is... The mind and body are the cage in which they both are closed in, and the ātmā is the Paramātmā: "So’ham." So, it’s beautiful, isn’t it? Dīpthal Bhagavān, Dev Puruṣa Mahādeva.
