There was a great saint who possessed many supernatural powers, yet he neither utilized nor demonstrated them. Merely seeing him was enough; everything would be okay. If he touched you, it was as if a divine light entered. At that time, there were fewer humans on Earth. There were vast jungles and forests, and wildlife lived freely. Nature and humanity existed in harmony. A prince heard about this Swāmījī and his greatness, and he desired to have his darśan. To find him, the prince had to search the forest. He took his horse and set out. The saint was cleaning thorn bushes from the main road. The prince had to wait until he reached the saint's hut, which was two kilometers away. The sun was hot, 45 degrees, and the saint was working alone—no disciples, no one else. The prince, riding his horse, saw a man cutting bushes, grass, and cleaning thorns. He thought, "I will ask him where Swāmījī lives." He asked, "Do you know where Swāmījī lives?" The man gave no answer. The prince asked again, "Can you tell me where this way will lead?" Still, there was no answer from the man. "I asked you, where is Swāmījī living?" He remained silent. The prince, holding a chabuk (whip) for his horse, struck the man three or four times with it and then rode away. After two kilometers, he reached the grass hut where Swāmījī lived. A disciple was there, preparing lunch. The prince arrived and asked if this was the hut of that Swāmījī. The disciple said, "Yes, sir." "Can I have his darśan? Can I meet him? I came a long way here." The disciple replied, "I am sorry, but he is not here now." "Where is he?" "He is cleaning the path." "Which path?" "This path, just where we must have met him, about 500-600 meters from here." "How is he dressed?" "Nothing, he had just one lungi, that's all, and one towel." The prince was now in a dilemma, hoping it was not the same man. Meanwhile, Swāmījī returned and said to the disciple, "Why didn't you give him something to drink? Why didn't you offer him a seat and give him some cold water or food?" The prince said, "Sir, excuse me." Swāmījī asked, "For what?" "For my stupidity." Swāmījī said, "No, no, you did good. You know, when we buy a cooking pot made of clay, we test it to see if it is complete or broken. If it is broken, it does not have this sound; it has a broken sound. So you tested me. Now you know if I am broken or I am complete, my son. That's alright; you did it out of ignorance." The prince then greeted him properly, and they had a satsaṅg.
