Self discipline of the yoga teacher

Yoga is a scientific system with one aim: union with the Universal Self. This union is obstructed by internal foes like ego and doubt. We struggle to accept others, so accepting God is a greater challenge. Meeting God is not an easy task, and we lack a clear picture of the divine. True happiness is found in the guru's shelter, as the sought-after Brahman is realized through him. The aim is to become one with the cosmic Self, which is unbounded and omnipresent. Yoga in daily life provides this path; it is a gentle, divine practice, not a physical competition. It is the essence of teachings from masters worldwide, sustained by universal principles, not by any single person.

The science of Yoga in daily life is precisely that: a science, a scientific system. It is a system with a philosophy, a system with a background, a solid foundation, and a future. How does Yoga come to human beings? It did not come merely through physical postures or through self-discipline alone. It has only one aim: to become one with the Universal. We are not able to become one with it because we have so many foes within: so much ego, selfishness, greediness, and so many doubts. We are not able to accept others as they are. So how are you going to accept God as He is? Perhaps God is different than you think. When you meet Him—I’m looking forward to it—how will you act? You might say, "No, this is not what I wanted." Who knows? It is better to have a life in this mortal world. To meet God, to understand God, and to live with God is not an easy job. To meet God, to understand God, and to experience God is not an easy task. And what will He do with us? Where will He send us? Think it over, whether you like it or not: Do you truly want to see God? Are you ready? We do not have a clear picture of God. As one bhajan says: "Milta hai sacca sukha keval gurudev tumāre śaraṇome." The real happiness is found only under your shelter, Gurudev. This bhajan is complete, and at the end it is said: What will I do with that face of God which I have never seen in life? It is better that I stay with Gurudeva. Because that which you are searching for—Brahman—will be realized through him. Thus, our aim is to become one with that cosmic Self, which is one without a second, not bounded by time and space. It is one without a second, beyond time and space, present in each and every atom, omniscient and omnipresent. And that is what Yoga in daily life is giving us. Therefore, there are no competitions. We are not physical trainers. We are not physical instructors in a sports club or in some training center or bodybuilding center. We are in Yoga. It is very gentle, very fine, very divine. And it has its own quality. Our duty is just to work as it is. Then the system will survive. Otherwise, many systems have come and many have gone away. Therefore, Yoga in life is a divine path, the way to God, because there is guru kṛpā (the grace of the guru). Many holy books write about this. Even in the testament it is said: "I am the way to God. I am with the Father." Now, research these words: Who said this, and to whom? The Master said it to his apostles, his disciples. Which master? Jesus. So it was a Guru Vakya, the word of the master. He said to the disciple, "I am the way to God." He did not say, "No other masters, no one else, only and only me. There was no one before me, and no one will be after me." He did not say that. Because if it were like that—if he said, "There will be no one after me"—the entire universal system would collapse. So many systems have failed in this world. But Sanatana Dharma, the eternal religion, did not fail because it is universal. It is not personified. And so the teachings of Yoga in daily life... It is the essence of all the different guru-vākyas from the whole world. Many people do not understand the guru. And whenever they write something wrong about the guru, I have to laugh, or I feel sorry for these people—how poor they are, how uneducated they are. They write like an unlettered person. To write without knowing something is completely wrong.
