Love between Master and disciple

A discourse on the power of grace and the guru-disciple relationship.

"To recall a soul from a great distance and return it to the body is a profound mystery."

"As soon as Gurudev blesses us, the darkness is gone."

Swami Maheshwarananda narrates miraculous accounts of life restoration by past masters like Mahāprabhujī, and shares a personal story of his profound bond with his own master, Holy Gurujī. He explains how the guru's grace and the gift of a mantra can dissolve all past karma, emphasizing that love for the guru transcends physical death and eliminates all spiritual distance. The talk concludes with a poem on ultimate surrender.

Through spiritual practice, one attains a higher level of consciousness. One who gains this knowledge is called a Trikal Darśī—a seer of the three times: past, present, and future. This was the state of Mahāprabhujī. If you see his picture, read the Līlā Amṛt, or hear the accounts from Bhaktānanda, you will know that Mahāprabhujī could reveal everything about a person's life: past lives, problems, name, and future. He could even restore life to the dead. Medical science states that if a person is clinically dead for even a minute, the brain suffers damage; after five minutes, it is severely damaged. Yet, there were instances where people who had died eight, nine, or even nearly twenty hours earlier were brought to Mahāprabhujī. He blessed them, and they returned to life. One such person, a child revived after ten hours, is now a great-grandfather living in the Khatu Āshram. Three people revived in this way—one woman and two men—are still alive today. Devpurījī also restored life in this manner. This is a divine act; we cannot do such things. To recall a soul from a great distance and return it to the body is a profound mystery. I do not fully understand it myself. Perhaps it was merely politeness or something to nurture my ego, but something similar occurred with my master, your grandmaster, Holy Gurujī. He was in Europe and experienced serious heart difficulties. He later said he had actually left his body. He told me, "I came and I said, 'No, come back,' and I brought him back to the body, to life." He said he would not have returned to India were it not for me, Maheshwarānanda, that I brought him back for all of you. How I did it, I do not know. It happened because I love him so deeply. You also love, but how does one accomplish this? It is a phenomenon beyond our understanding, revealing the profound bond between master and disciple. Later, when Holy Gurujī left his body, he was placed on a ventilator in the hospital and lived for a further fifteen to twenty days. Everyone, including the doctors who gave him only hours, believed he would pass away. He was in a deep coma, in Ānanda, for he had already departed. Then a devotee came to me and said, "Please go and tell Holy Gurujī he can go now." I asked what he meant. He explained that once, when sitting with close devotees, Gurujī had told a story from Urav and said, "As long as Maheshwarānanda does not tell me or permit me—'permit' is not a good word to use for the master—but when Mahesh will say that I can go, then I will go." The devotee urged, "So please, Swāmījī, go and tell Holy Gurujī, now you can go." For me, this would be the most terrible minute of my life—to tell my master, "Go." I could not. Day by day, his body was seizing and declining, yet he lingered. When I approached his room, there was just a gentle smile on his face, no speech, sometimes only a movement of his eyelids. I had to make my heart like iron so that Gurujī could free himself from the body, yet I still did not dare to say it. Reality is different from intellect. To understand this, we must comprehend the saint, surrender, and reach that point. Then all your karmas are gone. For millions and billions of years, darkness may exist in a cave. You can go into the cave and plead, "Darkness, I pray to you, I request you, you have enjoyed this cave for billions of years, can you go out now?" The darkness will not move. But as soon as you bring in a light, the darkness is gone. Though it resided there for eons, when light comes, it disappears; darkness has no existence. Similarly, no matter how many bad karmas we have, Gurudev kī kṛpā āśīrvād hote hī—as soon as Gurudev blesses us, the darkness is gone. My final words: there is a beautiful poem. "Beautiful, since then, since when I put that one name, the word only, in my heart—the mantra Gurudev gave me—all my sins were destroyed." Like a single spark of fire falling onto tons of dry grass, everything burns immediately. When such a Gurudev blesses us and gives a mantra, you are liberated. Gaṅgā jal to vahī hai jo Gaṅgā mein praveś kiyā hai. The true Gaṅgā water is only that which has entered the Gaṅgā. Other water may be cleaner, filtered, and so on, but it is not Gaṅgā water. Gaṅgā, holy Gaṅgā Mātā, is Gaṅgā. So Gurudev is Gurudev. Enter into his consciousness, and you will achieve everything. You need not do anything—no sādhanā, nothing. Just be there. That is all. Therefore, it is said: "Gurudev, I will be thine. Devotees may come, devotees may go, but still, my Lord, I will be thine. I may go far, farther than the stars, but still, my Lord, I will be thine. When I die, when I die, look into my eyes, mutely they will say, I will be thine." This means death cannot separate us. Where there is love and unity, there is no distance or duality. Distance exists where there is doubt, ignorance, jealousy, and attachment. Where there is love, there is no distance—only freedom and happiness. So, God's name can enlighten us. All enlightenment comes through just one mantra. Keep on repeating it. It does not matter how much care you take of your body. You may eat the healthiest food every day, get massages and oils—sorry, ladies, today I was listening about Abhyaṅga and Āyurveda, my thoughts were elsewhere—you may do a thousand things for this body to survive, live healthy, and stay young. One day it will go. You may sit inside a case of bulletproof glass, but the soul will pass even through bulletproof glass. Ultimately, only nām, nām hī hameṁ pār kar saktā hai. The name of the Gurudev is a boat, a very big ferry, a ship. Those who sit in it will cross the ocean and reach the mainland, the other shore. You must have confidence; then Gurudev will liberate you and bring you to that crossing. That is the final aim of our life. Otherwise, all that we do for beauty and for various things—blim-blam-blim-blam—is like a little baby giving its hand into the hand of the mother or a grown person. So that is what I want to tell you. Recording location: Australia, Sydney, Australian Tour
