Don't be the slave of your Siddhi

Beware of false spiritual powers and deception. The mind seeks novelty even after finding truth. Negative energy often speaks sweetly to mislead. Some falsely claim siddhis like reading auras or futures to exploit pure-hearted believers. Authentic realization is demonstrated, not proclaimed. Claiming powers one does not possess is a great sin. Such false siddhis become major obstacles on the spiritual path, binding and burning the aspirant like dry grass in fire. Genuine spiritual energy manifests naturally through presence and kindness, not through proclamation. Do not play with these things for ego or benefit. Focus on true spiritual practice.

"There is no austerity greater than truth. And no greater sin than to lie."

"For those who are striving to achieve samādhi, in the waking state, siddhis come. And this kind of siddhi becomes a bandage."

Human beings are not easily satisfied. Even when one finds nectar and tastes it, the mind wonders if there is something more, something different and beautiful. Wherever there is positive energy, negative energy also exists. This negative energy often speaks very sweetly. In European village talk, you put out corn to catch a chicken. Similarly, some people present themselves as Siddhas, claiming, "Oh, I know everything. I can see your aura. Oh, my God, in your heart there is suffering." But in whose heart is there no suffering? Raise your hand if you have never had problems that touch your heart. They play at being Siddhas, confusing people with very pure hearts and beliefs. One day, Holy Gurujī and I were standing at a bus stand in Mumbai. There was a large sign that read, "If you want to know your future, then please come in." Since this person could supposedly see everything, Gurujī said to me, "Let’s go in." Many people—10, 15, 20—were sitting on a waiting list. Gurujī went in and sat down too. Someone informed the person inside, the future-teller, that an extraordinary personality had entered, as Gurujī had a very big aura. That man came out, made a praṇām to Gurujī, and said, "Please come in. What can I do for you?" Gurujī replied, "I have no wish. Thank you. I only came because you wrote there, 'the future teller.'" The man sat there sweating. Gurujī then said, "I have to go to a particular place in Mumbai, about 45 minutes away by city bus, and I have no money in my pocket. So, tell me, when will the money come into my pocket?" The man stood up, took 500 rupees, and put it in Gurujī’s pocket, saying, "I need your blessing. Please forgive me. This is my bread earning." Gurujī told him, "Be careful. Be careful to tell someone the future. It can put you in trouble." Then Gurujī recited a poem by Tulasīdāsjī: "Sāc barabar tap nahī, jhūṭ barabar pāp, jiske hirde sāc he, take hirde jāp." There is no austerity greater than truth. To follow the truth is the greatest tapasyā. And no greater sin than to lie. If you tell someone you have a siddhi and say, "You have a blue aura," or "You have a yellow aura," or "You have a dark aura, that’s the mantra you should practice," you claim to have siddhi. Are you sure? Or are you mentally disordered? Or are you just making people stupid? Then it is a lie. Therefore, Patañjali said in his beautiful Patañjali Yoga Sūtra, in the Samādhi Pāda: "Te samādhau upasargo vyutthāne siddhayaḥ." For those who are searching and striving to achieve samādhi, at that time, in the state of observation, big obstacles appear on the path of the sādhaka, the practitioner. In the waking state, when you are conscious, siddhaya—the attainment of the mentioned hitriyut, the siddhis—comes. And this kind of siddhi becomes a bandage. This bandage will cause you a big obstacle in your integration, and the words you use will become very painful to you. So the question is this: Do you want to get mokṣa or not? Do you want to achieve your spirituality or not? Then do not begin to play. Many yoga people read little books and then proclaim, "I am self-realized." Traveling with Gurujī was sometimes nice, sometimes not so nice—with the master, there is always beautiful suffering too. We went there, and Gurujī asked him only one question. The man had asked, "Oh Swāmījī, how are you? You are here? What can I do for you?" Gurujī first asked only one question: "Only truth, do you know now where Mahāprabhujī incarnated?" This man stood up, held both feet of Holy Gurujī, and said, "Forgive my ignorance. I don’t know." So Gurujī said, "Why do you make people stupid?" A third event happened here in Czechoslovakia in 1975 when Gurujī came. We traveled from Olomouc, somewhere far from Prague, near Budějovice. Lalita said there was a healer who could see everything. Gurujī had a pain in his knee, so he told me, "Let’s go there." So we went. The story is not just a story; it is truth, not a lie. Lalita is sitting there, and Gurujī asked him the same question. He was struggling to swim through it—like someone who can’t swim. He did not know how to answer Gurujī, and he did something with his knee. The result was zero. Then Gurujī was sitting in another room, and the man came to me because I had something with my sinus. He made a gesture to heal me while standing. As soon as he brought his hand towards my face, he fainted. Yes, it’s true. Libuška is sitting there; she can tell you what happened. He said, "You have such strong energy, I can’t come through." I said, "Thank you." Then we came back to Prague. It was more than 15 hours of traveling in an old Škoda and Trabant. Gurujī said it was very tiresome, with so many people. So, those who claim to see the future and everything have a siddhi? Then, put your mobile phone somewhere in the room and ask this person, "Please, can you tell now where is that mobile, Štěpán?" No? That’s it. Therefore, for your spiritual development, it is not good to play with such things. Four years ago, a lady—a few ladies, especially in Croatia—said, "Oh, Swāmījī is speaking in me. You must do this. It’s a Guru Vākya. You must do it now. Swāmījī came in the dream and told me this, and now he is speaking in me. I must tell you that you should do this and this." And, of course, they did it. Then they told me something stupid happened, and they said, "Swāmījī, but you spoke in her." I said, "You mean by telephone?" "No, no, in her." I said, "Why should I speak in her? I could speak outside of her. I’m still alive." So many clear-hearted, naive people—why do you say naive? They fell into these troubles. So please, don’t play for your ego and for your benefit. This is not good for practitioners of spirituality and yoga. Now, there are some people who think there is a magic power and they can influence you. No one can influence you. Why don’t they influence some big president, like Bush, Putin, the Czech President, the Indian President, the Chinese President, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Slovakia—influence them not to bring war? That would be the best magic power, if they can influence you and your brain. They could influence all these people in big positions in the world. And you should know that people in power and big positions in the world, in reality, do not want war. They do not want war, and they do not want killing. But there are many other forces that compel them to act. Do not blame the President of America for bringing wars, or the Prime Minister of England, or anyone. In reality, they do not want war, but the circumstances and manipulation are like that. So if someone has magic power, I request you to utilize your magic power in those conflict areas where wars are happening and where people are starving. Use that magic power to give hungry people food and bring peace. And if you are a person who can see the future, then please tell them what their future is—to not fight. Therefore, do not be unhappy or afraid about magic. Recently, a person telephoned and said, "There is one man who is a magic man, and he wants to destroy me. I am ill. When I go to the doctor, through his magic, he influences my doctor. When I go shopping, he influences my shopping by magic, and so on." In reality, he was her best husband, or lover, or friend, and he left her. Now she cannot find anything, and she thinks he is a bad man. When he came to her and loved her, he was the best man in the world. Now he is one of the worst men in the world. So do not be afraid about magic. No ghost. No ghost. People were afraid to go to the graveyard. Now, go walking on the graveyard at midnight. You will not see even one ghost. No. Why should a ghost come there? They are already gone somewhere. Either we believe that when we perform the last saṃskāras—the funeral—and the paṇḍit or brāhmaṇs or priest performs the ceremony and says this soul has gone to heaven, so now who is the ghost there? So either you believe the soul has gone to heaven or is still sitting in the graveyard. Why should he sit in the graveyard? He could come into his house again. Where you are living, your ancestors are living there too. So there is no ghost like this. These are fabrications to create fear in people, like in films when you see Dracula. How is it created? So fear—there is no treatment for fear. And there is no treatment for doubts. No remedy for doubt, for fear, or for greediness. So, people who say to you, "I know everything, I see your future, I see your aura. Oh, your Maṇipūra Chakra is imbalanced. Oh, your Svādhiṣṭhāna Chakra doesn’t function anymore. Oh, your Anāhata Chakra is completely damaged. Oh, your Ājñā Chakra is completely like a fog. You have no good memory." Now, who has good memory? Everyone has bad memory nowadays. When somebody tells a telephone number, prosím, pomali (please, slowly). This kind of speaking is not good karma. It is not good karma. Therefore, you should ask the person to give some task. I sit here; in the other room, Pārvati is writing on the blackboard: Number five. And now, you should, while sitting here, must say, "She is writing number five." Then I can believe. Like Mahāprabhujī, when anyone came, he told them what their problem was—like the story about the chicken, or that one, Mr. Bhatnagar, who wrote 40 questions in his pocket. At his arrival, Mahāprabhujī said, "You have 40 questions; you will get 40 answers for each question." There, we can believe, yes. But just to say things like this—"Don’t fail in such things"—is therefore a threat. So there is no remedy, no remedy for fear and doubts. And when you are so sensitive... And once I see your future... Of course, you have been disappointed so many times. Who is not disappointed? In India, we say they put honey on your elbows for you to lick. If someone puts honey on your elbows, you can never lick the honey from there. Please try to lick your elbow. Everyone tries. That’s it. So you can never lick your elbow. That means you will never achieve anything with such people. So in India, we say when someone is prophesying like this, then Gurujī will say, "Don’t put honey on their elbows." And the person will lose their spirituality and all abilities, and their future will be dark. So if you have siddhi, do not use it, and do not tell anyone. If you tell someone, you will have no more peace, and your spiritual development will decrease. For worldly life, money and a partner are the māyā. Your wife is the biggest Māyā for you, or your husband and money. These two things, when they come into your hand, make you forget God. But then one day you will cry, "Oh God, what happened?" And for a yogī, for a spiritual aspirant, this kind of siddhi is Māyā. The siddhi is like a fire, and you are the paper or dry grass. You fall into the fire, and this fire will burn you and turn you into ashes. Therefore, be careful. Do not be the slave of your siddhi. When you utilize, use your siddhi, you become a slave. But if the siddhi functions by itself without your attention to utilize it, then it’s okay. That’s it. So, like Mahāprabhujī and Devapurījī, they did not tell people, "I have this siddhi." But it happened through their presence. When you have good energy and kindness, good behavior, and you come somewhere, you behave nicely. "Good evening, dear friends, how are you?" You bring a good atmosphere by being there. Good energy comes. So many people in yoga try to become siddhas, and these siddhas are like bubbles on the water. How long will they last? Not long. Many systems have come and many systems have disappeared. But you see, now still, through the blessing of Mahāprabhujī, Devapurījī, and Gurujī, our yoga in their life, for the last 36 years, is improving, helping people, and growing. And many things are spiritual practices. If you have health problems, if you go to the doctor, he will explain it much better than I can. But we are not only here for health; we need to have something different that no one can give us. You have to produce it yourself through, or under, our spiritual lineage, with Mahāprabhujī’s blessing.
