Reading books alone doesn't make you wise

A spiritual discourse on the futility of external rituals without inner transformation.

"By reading books, centuries past, no one became a great wise man. For those who read the two and a half letters of love, they became wise."

"You may struggle through the whole world and complete all holy pilgrimages, but if you have not made the pilgrimage within yourself, if you have not changed yourself, it is nothing."

The speaker emphasizes that true wisdom comes from understanding love, not merely from scriptural knowledge or pilgrimage. He illustrates this with a parable about a donkey that, despite being washed clean, chooses to roll in dust again, comparing it to a person who attends satsang but does not change their inner habits.

Many books and śāstras exist, containing a wealth of wisdom. Yet, understand that wisdom alone makes one wise. There is a poem: By reading books, centuries past, no one became a great wise man. For those who read the two and a half letters of love, they became wise. This is simply love. Where love resides, all beautiful qualities are present: forgiveness, understanding, harmony—everything. And where it is absent, everything is lost; all negative qualities arise. You will not learn this without Gurū Kṛpā, without the Gurū's word. You may struggle through the whole world and complete all holy pilgrimages, but if you have not made the pilgrimage within yourself, if you have not changed yourself, it is nothing. A man once had a fine donkey. He washed it with nice shampoo, clean water, oils, and a little more shampoo. The donkey became very clean and shining, and the man was happy. He let the donkey free. The donkey looked around, saw a heap of dust or ash from a fire, went over, lay down, and rolled in it. The man could only exclaim, "Oh God!" Similarly, through satsaṅg your heart is cleansed; through holy places your heart is cleansed. But if you do not change your inner habits, you become that foolish donkey once again. --- Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Weekend seminar
