What happens when you see the Self-Realized Saint?

A spiritual discourse on the power of self-realization versus occult practices.

"Where there is light, darkness disappears."

"The higher you develop, the humbler you become."

Swami Maheshwarananda (Guruji) narrates instructive stories, including one of a master of black magic and his self-realized disciple, to illustrate that true spiritual power dispels negative forces. He emphasizes that the ultimate goal is Ātmajñāna (self-knowledge), attained through the Guru's grace and the practice of teachings like Yoga in Daily Life, which he describes as a divine prasād (blessing) to be shared openly.

What happens when you meet a self-realized saint? There is a beautiful story involving Nārada and Viṣṇu. There is another story: during a prayer, I once asked Gurujī, "How should I speak?" Gurujī smiled and said, "Remove their doubts and fear." Gurujī tells a story: "Go and catch the tiger." If you tell someone, "Go and catch the tiger," only two leaves are moving. But the person who is going to catch the tiger, his soul knows what will happen. So, the master gives one sentence, and now you have to understand it, realize it, and do it. Very often, questions come about black magic and Tāntric Vidyā. Vidyā means a certain knowledge and perfection: black magic, white magic. There are techniques where you can succeed in black magic also. You can do many things which, for people, are miracles. But the end of that person's life will be very bad. You read in the Līlā Amṛt the story of Gunmarama, the magic man; if not, you should read it. Every day, read one chapter of Līlā Amṛt. As a yoga teacher and practitioner of Yoga in Daily Life, you will gain new wisdom inside every day. There was one sādhu who did not practice for self-realization. He practiced to attain some siddhis to talk with spirits and have them under his control. He used to order the spirits, "Go and do this, go and do that in that house," many things. I do not wish to tell you all that happens, but Holy Gurujī said Mahāprabhujī taught: "Where there is light, darkness disappears." So when you have the name of Mahāprabhujī, the name of Gurudev, the mantra, all negative energy and dark forces disappear from you—as long as you remain under the center of light. If you put off the light, darkness is there. So, it depends on you. There was a man, a sādhu, a master. He was practicing this black magic and had power; he could call spirits, and they were "hājār"—yes, ready. He had one disciple. This disciple went to the Himalayas and performed his sādhanā with no desires, no siddhis, nothing—only Ātmajñāna—and he attained self-realization. After a long time, he came to see his master. He was very happy to see his master, and the master was very happy to see him, like a father sees his son or a son sees his father. After a few days, the master said to his disciple, "I will show you some miraculous power. I want to give it to you, but you were gone for so long." The disciple said, "Yes, please, master," even though he was self-realized. The higher you develop, the humbler you become. And the less you are developed in spirituality, the more arrogant you become: ego, arrogance, anger, hate, jealousy, saying, "That's nothing, I am right." But the wiser you are, the humbler you are; that is your identification that you are divine, holy. Sanātana Dharma is known as the living dharma. Sanātana Dharma is eternal principles, not man-made; man-made dharmas are the teaching of every incarnation. The disciple said, "Yes, sir, bless me." Around midnight, they went to the forest. The master took with him some meat, alcohol, and blood, for these are used in devil's ceremonies, in negative ceremonies where you offer something. The disciple was sitting, and the master drew a circle. He said, "Do not get out of the circle, and whatever happens, do not be afraid; I am here, they are all my servants, my slaves." The disciple asked, "Who, master?" The master replied, "Just keep on looking." Then he began chanting some mantras, but nobody came. For two and a half hours he called; no one came. The master said, "Let us go back. Today is not a good constellation." He was very angry. The next day, the master went alone. Again he performed his ceremony, and after a long time, one spirit came—perhaps you would call it a ghost or a spirit. It said, "Yes, master, what can I do? I just wait for your order; I can turn the whole earth or all planets." The master angrily ordered, "Me? Nothing is impossible." The master was angry: "Why did you not come yesterday? You made me look lower; I wanted to show my disciple. I will punish you." The spirit said, "Master, please do not punish me." The master asked, "Where have you been? And where are all the others?" The spirit replied, "Master, I was an unlucky person. I had bad karma that I was not here yesterday." The master asked, "What do you mean?" The spirit said, "Yes, Lord. All who were here, they were liberated." The master asked, "What do you mean, 'liberated because they had a darśan of your disciple'? Why did you not bring him here today, Lord? I want to be liberated; permit me to see him." The master said, "Alright, go." The spirit went to the disciple and said, "I adore you, I admire you." The disciple asked, "What have you done?" The spirit said, "Master, nothing, just your divine name." Then the disciple gave a long lecture to his own master about these black magics and how much the master would suffer if he continued. The master then gave it up and went with the disciple to the Himalayas to attain self-realization. So, self-realization is the key to freedom, and that comes through the Guru. That is why Mahāprabhujī said: "Khat chod manā, O my mind, give up your 'khatā', give up your stupid will. Chal saṅg merī, toj ātmā jñān batāvat he. Come with me, I will show you the ātmā jñāna, self-realization." Therefore, what you are doing is all a way to self-realization. I have designed the program in such a way for you that while living this normal household life, you are still performing those sādhanās which people do in the hills of the Himalayas. Understand and do it, and distribute it as a prasād to others. Do not hesitate to speak about spirituality, about God. You have received the prasād in your hands, and it is not yours. You lose nothing by giving it further. "Mera to kushe nai," nothing is mine, O Lord. Whatever is, is Yours, Yours to give. I lose nothing. That is it. I am happy, Lord, that You have chosen me as the channel of Your love, through which Your divine energy, divine love, and divine mercy flow to all creatures and humans. So this prasād, this divine prasād as Yoga in Daily Life—where the teachings of Mahāprabhujī, Gurujī, Devpurījī, and Alakhpurījī reside—is directly in your hands. How far you can implement it depends on you. Mahāprabhujī said to Gurujī, "I gave you the kingdom of the whole world." Now it depends on you how you rule it. So I tell you also today: you have received this prasād. Give it with both hands. Do not try to hide it. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
