Do not Neglect Your Sadhana

A spiritual discourse on the imperative of sustained personal practice, or sādhanā.

"In the sādhanā you are doing, two things are paramount. First, do not neglect it."

"Day by day, your love should grow towards spirituality... 'Nita nita prema mera adhika badejo.' So, day by day, my love should grow to thee, O my Lord."

The speaker delivers a direct address on the critical importance of unwavering spiritual practice. He argues that as the body's capacity naturally diminishes with age and is further weakened by modern, energy-deficient nourishment, one must increasingly rely on spiritual power and mantra practice. The talk emphasizes that personal belief does not alter spiritual truth and urges listeners to persist in their sādhanā for their soul's highest good.

In the sādhanā you are doing, two things are paramount. First, do not neglect it. If you neglect your sādhanā, you will not achieve what you aspire to achieve. There is a limitation of the body, its capacity. Day by day we are growing older, and something within our body is changing. Day by day, the capacity of our body decreases; it does not increase, especially after the age of thirty. Nowadays, when one is forty, one is considered among the least of the old people. This is because all the nourishment we receive—the air, which is heavily polluted, the fruits, the vegetables, the milk, the grains—is all śakti-hīna, devoid of vital energy inside. This definitely influences our body. Therefore, for your physical exercises, you should do as much as you can, but respect your body—its mobility. This does not mean you should neglect your exercises. If you neglect them, the body will become older more quickly, or stiffen. This is human nature: as people grow older, they develop more devotion to God according to their belief, or pay more attention to their life if they do not believe in God. It means one begins to understand what life means and what it means to be alive, because one knows the time has come, and we do not want to die. We do not want to suffer, and we do not want to be left alone. That is very important. In this way, it is crucial that you increase your ādhyātmik, your spiritual sādhanā. The time will come when you will say you have had enough of kushāṅga (bad company), and now you wish to go to satsaṅg (holy company). And the time will also come when you cannot achieve everything through your body, but through your spiritual power, through spiritual sādhanā, through more and more practice of mantra. That is very important. Therefore, do not neglect your sādhanā. Day by day, your love should grow towards spirituality. As Gurujī said in one bhajan to Mahāprabhujī: "Nita nita prema mera adhika badejo." So, day by day, my love should grow to thee, O my Lord. We say, "My love should grow to thee, O my Lord, double in the daytime and four times in the nighttime." So in twenty-four hours, it should grow six times more. It should not be neglected. This is your life, and it is very important for your soul. No one will share anything with you. Even if they wished to share, they could not. So this is your life and your path. Whether you believe or not, or keep yourself away from all the dogmas that talk about dualities in different religions—"we don't believe this, we don't believe that, we are from this culture, we are from that country"—your belief will not change the truth. Your doubts will not change the truth. The truth cannot be changed. And I think the truth is that which those great saints, those self-realized persons, have given us as their message. Therefore, in your interest, for your highest good and your future life, please continue your spiritual sādhanā and guide others to this spiritual path as well.
