You can defeat unhappiness with happiness

A spiritual discourse analyzing a devotional bhajan and its metaphors.

"To cross the ocean of māyā... he brought a boat, a very big boat, a ferry, and that ferry is satsaṅg."

"Parīṣ maṇi Gurudev hai, Gurū nām hai. The name of the Gurudev is the Parīṣ—that precious stone which turns iron into gold."

The speaker provides a line-by-line interpretation of the bhajan "Param Gurū Swāmījī," explaining the Guru's role as a liberator who saves souls from the cycle of rebirth. He describes the Guru's pure gaze and fragrant presence, using metaphors of a boat for satsaṅg and a philosopher's stone for grace. The talk warns of worldly temptations and emphasizes seeking the Guru's strength to transform negativity and ignorance into purity and knowledge.

Param Gurū Swāmījī, māro janam sodhārī. Sattva Gurū, a beautiful bhajan composed by our beloved Lord. Param means the highest, the highest of the highest. Param Gurū Swāmījī. Swāmī means the Lord, the master, the light, or the Self. Param Gurū Swāmījī. Māro janam sudhāryo āj. Today you made my life successful. Lākh chaurāsī me javatā. Otherwise, I would have gone into this cycle of 8.4 million life forms again and again, entangled in many, many lives. Mīr malo gyāka nenhe, jī bhavān chandana śarīr. Mīr malo gyāka nenhe—the eyes are very pure. You can see in a person's eyes the kind of feelings and thoughts with which one is looking at you. You can see anger, hate, jealousy, complexes, sadness, trickiness, greediness—many, many things. Your eye diagnosis sends everything. But Gurudev, Mahāprabhujī said, "Gurudev Gurujī, his eyes are very pure." Bhavān Chandana Śarīr. There is one kind of sandalwood called Bhavān. His body is like a beautiful sandalwood smell. His appearance brings the happiness we are waiting and waiting for. "Will thou come, will thou come, just for once come to me? Night and day, night and day, I look for Thee. Will my day fly away without seeing Thee, my Lord?" So the bhaktas are looking forward. And when the Gurudev appears, it brings a fragrance like beautiful sandalwood. To cross the ocean of māyā, to cross the ocean of ignorance, to cross this worldly ocean for the souls, satsaṅg layā dās—he brought a boat, a very big boat, a ferry, and that ferry is satsaṅg. Satsaṅg sudhāre, satsaṅg pāhī—even the ignorant one can become wise through satsaṅg. Those who will sit in this boat of satsaṅg will be able to cross the ocean. And who will not go to satsaṅg? They fall out from the boat. Then the sharks are waiting for you—beautiful sharks. Oh, they have many, many teeth, like razor blades. Each bite cuts our body. The sharks mean the temptations in this world: many different kinds of temptations which always take our attention away and create the ego—knowledge, education, money, position. So many temptations. If you will not have come, Gurudev, there would have been a big tragedy. I would have had to go again and again in this chaurāsī. Param Gurū Swāmījī, janam sudhāriyā. Parīṣ maṇi Gurudev hai, Gurū nām hai. The name of the Gurudev is the Parīṣ—that precious stone which turns iron into gold. Kauvā se haṁsā banāyā Gurudev—you made the crow a beautiful swan. Kauvā se haṁsā banāyā. Kauvā means the black one. Black means sin, black means ignorance. Haṁs, white, means knowledge, liberation, the highest, the soul, the realized soul. That's why, you know, when a small haṁs baby is born from the real haṁs, it is a yellow color. Also, chicken babies have this yellow color. That's the beginning, the beginning of the dawn. Dev Puruṣa Bhagavān, Dev Puruṣa Mahādeva—the Lord, the God, Dev Puruṣa. Mahāprabhujī said, "Thank you and adoration to Thee, O my Gurujī. All my work, all my wishes became true." We are very limited ones. Our approach, our strength, our thoughts, our knowledge, our experiences—they are limited. We do not have that ability. We need extra strength, extra energy, the motivations, the Guruvāṇī. And that creates within us the strength, and purifies the negative energy. Therefore, always try to be happy. Face unhappiness with happiness. When something negative happens and you are sad, the negative will not turn to the positive. If you have not realized anything, then everything that happens makes you sad, scared, restless, nervous—many, many things. But if you express and fight all situations with confidence and energy, then nothing will happen. Like Holy Gurujī said, "Oh, it's Holy Gurujī's mantra." --- Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Summer seminar
