People think of God only in troubles

A discourse on the spiritual value of difficulties, centered on a story from the Mahābhārata.

"I surrender to those troubles which remind me of Thy name, O Lord, every second."

"I throw a big rock on that happiness which, when it comes, makes people forget the name of God."

The speaker recounts the story of Kuntī asking Lord Kṛṣṇa for a peculiar blessing: to give troubles to devotees (bhaktas) and comfort to non-believers. He explains Kuntī's reasoning that comfort leads to forgetfulness of God, while troubles constantly remind the devotee to call upon the divine name, comparing the sleeplessness of the seeker (yogī) to that of the ill person (rogī).

In India, we have hot winds in the months of March, April, May, June, and July; we call it "loo." The first time I experienced that loo was in Serbia and Hungary, in Szeged. It was 43 degrees in Szeged and 42 in Novi Sad. It is truly terrible—there is no rain, the crops are thirsty. But definitely, God will do something for us. Especially, bhaktas have to go through troubles. When the Mahābhārata was finished and the Pāṇḍavas returned, and Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira was crowned, everything settled into peace again. Śrī Kṛṣṇa came there and decided to go back to Dvārakā. Before going, He wanted to visit Kuntī to say goodbye. He wished to give her a blessing and asked Kuntī, "Do you have any wish? I am going now to Dvārakā; I have finished my duty here, my dharma. The purpose for which I came to this Mithyā Loka, I have fulfilled. Sevā, the dharma of service, is the greatest dharma. The helping hand has more value than folded hands. I am going; if you have any wish ... " She said, "If you want to give me something, then please grant me one blessing, fulfill my request: give troubles to bhaktas, and a comfortable and ever more comfortable life to those who are not bhaktas." Kuntī was confused. No—Kṛṣṇa thought that Kuntī was confused. Kṛṣṇa will never be confused. It is He who is playing everything; God never acts directly. God always acts indirectly. God will always ask you, "What do you want?" And you will say, "But you know, I need not tell." But still, God will say, "You must tell." So Kṛṣṇa said, "Kuntī, perhaps you are too nervous. Do you know what you ask for? Troubles for bhaktas? And a good life for those who don't believe in God or in dharma and so on?" She said, "Kṛṣṇa, I know very well, very clearly, what I am asking." "Then repeat once more. What do you wish? Troubles for bhaktas and a happy life for those who don't believe?" Well, to make sure again—belief is good, but control is better; trust is good, but control is better. So as a control, Kṛṣṇa asked her again. He asked her, "Why?" Then she said, "Nāmi hṛdaye viśrāya"—"I throw a big rock on that happiness which, when it comes, makes people forget the name of God. Nāmi hṛdaye viśrāya—the name of God, which a bhakta's heart is constantly calling, is separate." The heart of the bhaktas is calling the name of God. But those who have a more comfortable life forget the name of God; it means that comfort separates the name of God from their heart. "Today I have a party, tomorrow is a wedding party. The day after tomorrow, my friend invites me somewhere to the cinema. I can do my mālā after, or prayer after." Always postponing, so it separates you from the name of God. "I surrender to those troubles which remind me of Thy name, O Lord, every second." Two persons cannot sleep: the rogī and the yogī. Rogī means the ill person who has a lot of pain. For that person, night is a horror, waiting for morning to come so the doctor will arrive and give some medicine. Or the seekers, the bhaktas, the yogīs. What kind of love is it if God is awake and you are sleeping? And so, when you remember that time, you are together. Where there is [true] love, there is no jealousy and attachment. And where there is emotional love, there is jealousy and attachment. So whenever you can do something good for others, help others, that is the best thing you can do. --- Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Summer seminar
