Think of Gurudev

A spiritual discourse on divine remembrance and meditation, using the story of Krishna and Kansa.

"About whom you think and with which kind of feelings you think, that comes to you."

"Therefore, if you are a real devotee of God, your Iṣṭadevatā, then why are you worried and scared with Him?"

The speaker recounts the story of Krishna feeling compelled to go to the demon Kansa, who constantly thought of him with fear and hatred, illustrating the power of constant remembrance. The teaching shifts to instruct devotees to instead meditate on the form and feet of the Gurudev, describing the Guru as the embodiment of supreme joy and knowledge. The discourse concludes with a guided visualization for meditation, linking pure devotion to the transformative power of spiritual practice.

There is a small story. God incarnates for many, many reasons. The day before yesterday was Janmāṣṭamī, the day the universal God, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, was incarnated. And Kṛṣṇa said in the Bhagavad Gītā, "O Arjuna, whenever my devotees are troubled, and whenever the demons are rising, then, time to time, O Arjuna, through the help of Yogamāyā, I manifest or incarnate on this planet." So many, many times the Lord incarnates to protect the dharma and to destroy the adharma, and not only for one thing, but for many, many things. So when Kṛṣṇa was born, as a five-, six-, or eight-year-old, Kṛṣṇa said to his father, Nanda Bābā, and to Yaśodā, "I am going to Mathurā. Why? To liberate Kaṁsa." Kaṁsa was the uncle of Kṛṣṇa, but he was believed to be the most negative dictator, a Rākṣasa. And he was only waiting to see Kṛṣṇa to kill him. So they said, "Why are you going there? Please don't go. Kaṁsa is a very terrible Rākṣasa." Kṛṣṇa said, "I must go because there is no one at this time who thinks of me as Kaṁsa is thinking, because Kaṁsa couldn't sleep. When he fell asleep, he saw Kṛṣṇa because he knew that Kṛṣṇa would be the cause of his death, so constantly he is thinking of Kṛṣṇa." Kṛṣṇa said, "He has realized me within him. That's it. If you are jealous and angry at someone, constantly you are thinking of that person. Now that person is existing in you more than yourself." And that's why Kṛṣṇa said, 'I must go there.'" And so, about whom you think and with which kind of feelings you think, that comes to you. So when you meditate, think of Gurudev. Meditate on the embodiment of the Gurudev, the idol of the Gurudev. What is Gurudev? What is Gurudev? "Brahmanandam paramasukhadam kevalam jnanamurtim" — he is the supreme joy, Brahmanandam paramasukhadam, the highest happiness, bliss, and is only the form of the wisdom, knowledge, only knowledge: Brahmanandam paramasukhadam. He is beyond and above all these dualities. He is equal like the sky. And this is the aim of everyone to realize. He is only one, everlasting, and without any spot, pure, unmovable. It is compact in the whole universe. Nothing moves from him. "Sarvadhi-sakshibhutam," and knower of everything. He is knower of each and every atom of your body. "Bhavatitam trigunarahitam": He is above from the bhāva of the dualities and above the three guṇas. That is the Satgurudev. "Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ": I bow down to that Gurudev. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān, teacher. So "dhyāna mūlaṁ guru-mūrti, pūjā mūlaṁ guru-padam": what to adore, what to celebrate, the holy lotus feet of the Gurudeva. The best mantra for you is to follow the Guruvākyam. There should be no question, "Why? How? I don't understand." I can understand that you can't understand because you can't understand; the bhāva is missing. The bhāva is missing. Guruvākyam, that is the highest mantra for us. Adore, celebrate, worship the holy lotus feet. Nothing is higher in this universe than that. If you have this in your bhāva, in you, you are free from all troubles. It's beautifully said; Mahāprabhujī talks about this beautifully in some bhajans. And therefore, if you are a real devotee of God, your Iṣṭadevatā, then why are you worried and scared with Him? So with such a pure love, pure power, at the time of the inhalation, imagine the thousands of radiances, the light rays are penetrating through the body, and when you exhale, all negative cells are neutralized. But as long as you meditate, you must have the same power. Therefore, I used to say, don't change the altar of your heart, don't mix in the altar of your heart, then you will see what joy is there. So, whenever you will meditate, you will receive the light. You do it during the Kriyā, mantra practice, prāṇāyāma practice, āsanas, and so on. Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai! Sanātana Dharma Kī Jai!
