Mala is broken and the pearls spread

A spiritual discourse addressing questions on partnership and the loss of traditional meaning.

"Be happy together for as long as is possible."

"The mālā is broken and the pearls are scattered."

The speaker responds to many questions about partnership, lamenting how the true meaning of marriage is lost in modern times. Using the metaphor of Śiva and Pārvatī to describe the interplay between consciousness and devotion, and the imagery of a shattered vase or broken mala, he describes the fragmentation of sacred tradition and culture. He references a bhajan about loss and concludes with a paradoxical remark on renunciation.

There are many, many questions, so I will try to answer them. A great number of these questions are about partnership. I have spoken on this and answered it many times: be happy together for as long as is possible. It is a serious matter, but its meaning is lost in modern culture and education. The meaning of marriage is lost. There are some who try to preserve it, but there are some foolish ones who do not. It is like Śiva. He told Pārvatī, "Do not sleep." Here, Śiva is our inner Self, the divine consciousness, and Pārvatī is devotion. But when ignorance comes and ego comes, then she sleeps and misses the chance. This sleep signifies the sleep of ignorance. Here, sleep is ignorance. You take it too lightly and think others do not know, but Śiva knows everything. That is the truth. Yet, there are some who are very alert. Their energy, their power is very great. Even Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva surrender to such a śakti. That is called mātrī-śakti, satī-śakti. But this is lost today, broken. A beautiful glass vase was kept generation after generation as a tradition, a culture, a memory, an inheritance. But now, generations are not capable of keeping it; it has fallen down and shattered into many pieces. The mālā is broken and the pearls are scattered. There is a beautiful, very nice bhajan: "The mālā is broken. The pearls are scattered. For two days we were together. Now I never know where it has gone. The flame is blown out—you do not know where the flame is. The milk is spoiled—you do not know where the butter is now." That is it. Śiva tried his best. Śiva tried very hard. The poor man renounced everything for her, and instead of finding peace, he came into trouble. To the boys, I say: "Do not renounce anything. Let it be Hari Om Tat Sat."
