No practice is lost

A spiritual discourse on the continuity of practice across lifetimes.

"Suppose I practice for many, many years, still I didn't achieve my aim or goal and I die. What happens? Is all my practice gone, lost?"

"You will incarnate again as a beautiful spiritual human. And from childhood, the consciousness will awaken you, spiritual, and your sādhanā will continue."

Swami Avatarpuri addresses a morning gathering, explaining that spiritual practice (sādhanā) is never lost but continues from life to life. He recounts Lord Krishna's answer to Arjuna's question on this topic, and shares the example of a young disciple being a connection from a past life. The talk emphasizes the importance of mantra and devotion to a genuine guru within a lineage.

Similarly, when you enter the Mūlādhāra chakra—if you are able to enter—it is not easy. If you begin now, practicing seriously, after twelve years you will enter there. Every day practice, girls, every day for twelve long years. What will be in twelve years? "Before twelve years, I die. What will happen?" Yes, you will be born again as a beautiful human, and again you will come to the Yogananda life. Destiny will lead you, and again your sādhanā will continue, life after life. God Kṛṣṇa is advising Arjuna. Arjuna practices yoga, and Arjuna asks a question: "Lord, suppose I practice for many, many years, still I didn't achieve my aim or goal and I die. What happens? Is all my practice gone, lost?" Kṛṣṇa said, "No, you will incarnate again as a beautiful spiritual human. And from childhood, the consciousness will awaken you, spiritual, and your sādhanā will continue. From that path, where you stopped, it will continue from there." And that's why I said our little dear Arjun Puri, who was performing āsanas, he is my disciple from a past life too, and he joined again. So this is called ... There was one great lady, a spiritual holy lady, Mīrābāī, a great devotee of God Kṛṣṇa, and she said: "O Kṛṣṇa, please come to me. You know, your Mīrā is your devotee or servant for many, many lives, every life. Please come, appear to me." So mantra brings you there. Mantra removes the obstacles, but there should be Guru Bhakti. If you don't get a mantra from some guru—a spiritual master—of course there are many gurus, but a real spiritual lineage master, that's rare. So there are less gurus; you have less gurus and more kangaroos. So then you have to go with the devotion. Otherwise, practice your āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, have a good figure, good beauty of the body, eat, sleep, drive your car, and hurry home. What will happen next life, we don't bother now. But the next life can be painful. Recording location: Australia, Brisbane, Australian tour
