Spiritual awakening means to develop compassion in the heart

A spiritual discourse on practical karma yoga and self-awareness.

"Spiritual awakening means to develop the compassion in the heart."

"Every day they will wait for you. They will sing for you, and if you put them in your garden, they will dance for you."

The speaker, likely a spiritual teacher, begins with a bhajan and discusses the rarity of human life and its purpose for union with the divine. He provides practical instructions for cultivating compassion and purity through selfless acts like offering a seat or feeding birds, while emphasizing the need for discernment, illustrated by a story of a disciple moving a snail without understanding its needs. The talk focuses on purifying the inner instrument (antaḥkaraṇa) through self-observation and righteous action.

Din bandhu dinanāth, merī dorī tere hāth. It is a beautiful bhajan. "Din bandhu dinanāth"—O Friend of the meek, O Lord of the meek, the string of my life is in your hand. We can wish, but how is our karma? How was our thinking? How was our behavior? How arrogant we are, how much ego we have—that will be decided. Not this, not this. So observe thyself and pray to God to help you, and say to yourself, "Why can't you be different?" Listen. Definitely, human life is also very rare. Mahāprabhujī said this human life you cannot borrow to someone, and you cannot buy this body. Let us say someone is suffering and very ill and is dying, and you say, "Okay, I give you my body, come in." You cannot. There is no bargaining. You cannot sell it, nor can you buy it. It is only one chance, my dear, for this Jīvātmā to become one with the Paramātmā. Every religion has beautiful prayers; every religion has instructions for us all. Similarly, Hinduism and Yoga in Daily Life also have instructions for us. If we do, we will achieve. If we don't do, nothing will happen. Only one thing: I spoke and you heard. That's all. Spiritual awakening means to develop the compassion in the heart. Let's begin practically. I'll give you a practical way. I know you are doing, but I just want to tell you. When you get on the bus, and if there are elderly people or someone, let them go first. If you are sitting and someone is coming, stand up and give the place. This is renunciation. Second step: if someone is crossing the traffic light quickly, though it is still red, and one drives quickly, don't become angry. If someone wants to overtake you quickly, don't become angry. One master was giving a lecture to his disciples. He had one disciple who was living with him, and they were walking. They were walking, some rain came, it was nice nature, green grass, and so on. It was raining; they had an umbrella. After the rain stopped, they were walking back to their hut or āshram. The master said to his disciple, "My dear, it is always best to help every creature, not only the humans." Help—everyone needs the help. And the master was walking, the disciple was behind, one meter behind, and the master is talking, nobody is there. And the master looked behind, and the disciple was already 50 meters behind. So the master said, "What are you doing? I am talking and you just neglect it." He said, "No, no, master, I didn't neglect, I'm listening still, my lord. I did something." "What?" "That what you spoke just now, help all." "So whom did you help?" "You see, on the road there was a little small snail, you call snail? And you know, he walks so slowly and maybe some car will come and kill him, or someone will really step on him. So I took him and put it in the field at one side." The master became angry. "Why have you done this?" "Master, sorry, but I can't understand you now. Why can't you understand me? I know that you don't understand me. Yes, one hand, one side you tell that help. Another hand says, why did you do this?" The master said, "Yes, in both ways I am right. How? Do you know in which direction that snail wants to go? Maybe his family is on that side. And you put him again far away in the field on the other side. It will not help. First know and then help." That's it. So sometimes we think we do good, but in reality it is not good. So that's it, viveka, inner understanding. So, help. We begin with a very beautiful spiritual work. Or take practice; it is very practical. Every household—doesn't matter if you are with the whole family or all single, that's your problem, not my problem. If you are single, you are the happiest one nowadays. And if you are not single, then you are the busy one. Make one saṅkalpa or one decision or one vow every day. With one hand, you put in the grain, any kind of grains, and take one fistful, handful. Whatever comes in your hand, in one hand, go in the garden, in the park, or somewhere where the birds are under the tree, just throw it, that's all. The birds will eat, and you know, every day they will wait for you. They will sing for you, and if you put them in your garden, they will dance for you. And if one day you go on holiday, they will come to the windows and say, "Where have you been? We were hungry." So, you know, they have feelings and give love. So, begin to do something, renounce, and do good things. Some homeless person is sitting. Don't say, "Oh, these people, they don't work. They will go to a pub and they will drink." How do you know that they will go to the pub and drink? And if they go to the pub and drink, what is the pub for? And for what is a drink made? And if you go to the pub, they will see how terrible this person is going to the pub; what will you think then? You have no rights over that which you gave or you renounced. So, needy? How do you know if this is a needy person or not? If you want to help, then help. Helping hands have more value than folded hands. Help through this; what will happen? Your antaḥkaraṇa will become pure. Antaḥkaraṇa means manas, buddhi, citta, and ahaṅkāra: four. Mind, intellect, consciousness, and your ego. These four will be purified, and your eternal life, the eternal values, will awake in you. Within you is the fountain of joy. Within you is the ocean of bliss, and within you is the immortal soul.
