Give up your attachment

The mind must abandon its dispassion and false imagination to be shown the Ātmā. A child is attached to toys, crying if they are taken. As a teenager, one seeks other toys, with jealousy and anger growing stronger. People become attached to relationships, claiming they will die if a partner leaves, only to find a new "toy" later. Hobbies like having a dog become new attachments. Then spirituality is found, becoming a new toy, but God is different, for God cannot disappoint. A seeker once wanted a guru who did not eat, drink, or require anything. She was told to accept a stone, for a living guru will have human needs. One must find a true Satguru. First, understand the master's words, called Guru Vākya. Then perform Guru-sevā, which means serving all creatures. When service is accepted, one receives Guru Kṛpā, the mercy that is the root of liberation.

"God cannot disappoint you. That is something else."

"The root of liberation is in the mercy of the Gurudeva."

O my mind, give up your dispassion, give up your false imagination. Come with me from this saṃsāra. I will teach you and show you the Ātmā. Know thyself. Who are you? While living, born into this world, something suddenly awakes in us. A small child plays and fights for toys. One day, the child suddenly forgets them, thinking, "Oh, these are only toys," and begins to search for another. The small child also has attachment, jealousy, unhappiness, and anger. The toys are everything to that child. If you try to take them away, the child cries, becomes angry and jealous. Now you are some years older, a teenager, and you search for other toys. The jealousy, anger, and hate begin to grow stronger. Jealousy means an undeveloped personality. Many times people write or telephone me. They say, "My boyfriend left me. I will die now. I will kill myself. There is no sense to live in this world anymore." You don't know how they are talking. After some time, she finds another toy. "Thank you, Swamiji. I was so blind. That man was so stupid. Thank you, you saved my life. But thanks to Mahāprabhujī, he sent me such a beautiful, nice man. I’m so happy, and he doesn’t mind if I meditate long. I can go to the seminar; he doesn’t mind." You see? So it means everything is in your mind: attachment. After some disappointment in your attachment, you search for other toys. That’s called a hobby. To have a dog. So they begin to love the dog more than the husband. The poor man has to get up early and walk the dog, take it to the doctor, bring the food, clean the dog, look for ticks, go riding, swimming, hiking. So many hobbies. Then someone speaks of spirituality. What is that? So that becomes a new toy, and then you come to the name of God. "Oh God, this is a beautiful toy." Because no one can take it away; everyone else can disappoint you, but God cannot disappoint you. That is something else. Once Holy Gurujī was in a city called Jodhpur. There was a 95-year-old lady, and Gurujī asked her, "Have you a guru? Have you had mantra initiation?" She said, "No, I’m searching my whole life, but I haven’t met any guru till now." So the holy guru said, "Well, what kind of guru are you searching for? And what kind of gurus did you meet?" "Oh, I met so many gurus. But everyone, they are eating and drinking—of course, vegetarian. They take donations, they speak, they sleep. So why? What is the difference? I want that guru who doesn’t eat and doesn’t drink and doesn’t require anything and doesn’t go away from me." Gurujī said, "I have one guru for you like that." "Oh Swamiji Gurujī, that would be a great thing in my life. To die without a Guru and to die without having a mantra—a human life is senseless." She said, "Yes, please. Can you tell me where that Guru is?" So Gurujī said, "This is stone. The stone doesn’t eat, doesn’t drink, doesn’t ask for anything, and you can put it wherever you want. So accept that stone as your Guru. Because you must meet a living guru, and if it is a living guru, he will have the same nature: he will eat and drink." So we have to find a Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya Satguru. Then we have to go through three trainings first to understand the words of the master. That’s called Guru Vākya, which means to follow the instructions. If you understand the Guruvākya, then you go to the Guru-sevā. And Guru-sevā means serving all creatures. Mahāprabhujī, when he initiated Holy Gurujī as a sannyāsī, Holy Gurujī asked, "What can I do for you? What is my duty?" Mahāprabhujī said, "Go and serve the world. Serving all creatures is service to me." That is Guru Seva. When your seva is accepted—yes, you are doing good things in the world—then you get guru kṛpā. And Guru Kṛpā means the mercy of the Gurudeva. Therefore, it is said in one mantra: "Jñāna Mūlaṁ Guru Mūrtiḥ, Pūjā Mūlaṁ Guru Pādaṁ, Mantra Mūlaṁ Guru Vākyaṁ, Mokṣa Mūlaṁ Guru Kṛpā." The root of liberation is in the mercy of the Gurudeva. Guru Brahma, Guru Viṣṇu, Guru Devo Maheśvara, Guru Sākṣāt Para Brahma, Therefore, Guru Tattva is the Para Brahma, the Supreme. Guru Tattva is Paramparā. Guru Tattva is the Supreme, Parabrahmā. Tasmai Śrī Guruve Namaḥ. My adoration to that Gurudev. Then Gurudev will give you the mantra. Now our duty is to practice, to repeat this mantra. Abhyāśa, abhyāśa, O Arjuna, son of Kuntī, abhyāsa, abhyāsa, O Arjuna, son of Kuntī, practice, practice.
