Where and how to meditate?

The best time and conditions for meditation are defined by inner readiness and external peace. Meditate when the stomach is somewhat empty, avoiding drowsiness. Seize any peaceful moment, but not during paid work hours. The supreme time is Brahma Muhūrta, the period before sunrise, when universal consciousness awakens and spiritual energy is most accessible. This time is for collecting the finest qualities. To utilize it, go to sleep early. Upon waking, drink water and take a short walk before meditation to create a positive bodily change. Meditating before sleep is also suitable when quiet time is found.

"Brahma Muhūrta is always the best constellation."

"Early in the morning, that water becomes like amṛta (nectar)."

Firstly, for good things, there is always a good time. For bad things, no time is a good time. This is the first point. Secondly, it is best to meditate when the stomach is a little empty, meaning about two or three hours after eating. If you must meditate after eating, then sit in Vajrāsana. I will show that later. If you are in a state of Tandrā Avasthā or Nidrā Avasthā—drowsiness or sleepiness—you should either sleep or go for a short walk. Also, a very good time for meditation is whenever you find a peaceful moment and a little free time; then meditate. However, do not meditate in your office during work time. If you go to your office, sit in front of the computer, and begin meditation, your boss, director, or the company owner will certainly not appreciate it. He pays you to work, not to meditate, especially not at such an unusual time. The best time for meditation, when you receive more spiritual energy and experience quicker development on the spiritual path, is the morning before sunrise. This is called Brahma Muhūrta. Brahma Muhūrta means the time of the Supreme. Anything you begin at that time, you need not check the constellation to see if it is good or bad. Brahma Muhūrta is always the best constellation. Brahma Muhūrta begins exactly at dawn, which means the awakening of consciousness. The flowers awaken, nature awakens, the birds awake, the animals awake, and the yogīs also wake up and sit in meditation. The only ones not awake are the lazy ones, the alcoholics who are still up at two or three o'clock at night with alcohol, gambling here and there—they sleep and, of course, cannot take the benefit of Brahma Muhūrta. Holi Gurujī used to say that a sinner who had many sins in a past life enjoys a sweet sleep during Brahma Muhūrta. That time is so sweet. It is said: "O human, you miss the golden time." You missed it for what? God gave you the time and human life. This Brahma Muhūrta is for collecting the best qualities and the best energies. Therefore, it is said in English, "A little bed, a little rice, makes a man healthy and wise"—and not just wealthy, but let's say wealth also, because he goes to work early. The early bird finds the first worm, or rather, the first corn. So, Brahma Muhūrta, Uṣāpān—the first sun ray that breaks through the dark night. The name of that first sun ray is Uṣṇā. That uṣṇā ray awakens the Kuṇḍalinī within you at that time. One advantage is that there is no conflict at that hour. The only conflict you might have is if you had a bad dream, perhaps fighting in the dream with your partner or business partner. Therefore, go to sleep early so you can wake up early. Uṣāpān, we say Uṣāpān. Uṣāpān means to drink morning water. Keep water in your room, if possible in a copper pot, covered. At room temperature, it will remain. In the morning, get up and drink one big glass of water. This will help your health very, very much. Now, they have conducted research again in India. When you wake up in the morning, drink one liter of water. Take a five- or ten-minute walk, even just in the room here and there, and then meditate. You will see a very positive change in your body. You can try it; it is not harmful. You will see why in yoga it is called Uṣāpān—Uṣāpāna. Early in the morning, that water becomes like amṛta (nectar). And if you can place a few glass bottles together—one glass here, one glass there, and one in the middle—and then drink the water from the middle glass, it will have more quality, more quality. So, the best time for meditation is in the morning, from when dawn begins until sunrise. Sunrise means now you rise up—levitation. The sun is going up, and you are also going up. It means get up and do āsanas, prāṇāyāma, and go forth. Do prāṇāyāma, and then you will go to work. Alternatively, you can meditate before you go to sleep, because that is also a time when you have time and quiet.
