The answer is within you

A spiritual discourse on finding one's purpose and inner sanctuary.

"Follow your inner feelings about what you would like to do."

"Therefore, the answer is within you. We may make a mistake out of ignorance... but finally, we have to make ourselves clear within us."

The speaker offers guidance on career and life choices, advising listeners to seek work they enjoy and to consult their inner feelings when lost. He discusses the role of destiny, using metaphors of boats on waves and a bird on a ferry in the ocean to illustrate the soul's journey and its ultimate refuge in God. The talk references personal anecdotes, Mahatma Gandhi, and the saint Sūrdās, concluding with a prayer for divine grace.

Work in a way that you enjoy; do not force yourself. It does not matter what you study. Sometimes young people have visions. "Oh, I want to study this; it has a lot of interest." Very greedily, they begin to study, but slowly, slowly, they lose the interest. Somehow, they pass the examination, but the love is lost. And now you say, "Must I work like this?" You must not. Work something different; therefore, have more talents. Many people had very high educational professions. Finally, they went as babysitters. How beautiful! There was one doctor, and he had a lot of stress. One of his friends, who is a psychologist, said, "I think you should, for one year, be a babysitter; you will be happy." And that was a really anti-stress therapy. So, follow your inner feelings about what you would like to do. If you don't know, then go for a one- or two-year holiday. Don't worry; your parents have a lot of money. You have a birthright to have that money. Sooner or later, father, mother, either you give me now, or I have to take it through the testament. So, go for two or three years somewhere; relax. See the beauty of the world and people. Think over what you would like to do, and then do it. Maybe you would like to learn astrology. Maybe you would like to learn acupressure. Maybe you would like to be a yoga teacher. Or you would like to be a physiotherapist. Or you would like to learn music or painting; new talents are waking in you. Many people who study music don't want to play anymore. There was a lot of love to learn music from childhood. They passed the examination and now began to teach every day the same "put, put," and every day it was the same thing. Every day, they had to repeat it to the little children. Suddenly, one day, you said, "Come home, put your instrument in the temple, and do something." Remember from yesterday: "Who gave the peak will give the food." God takes upon himself the destiny of the devotees. So it is said, "Sajjan itanā dījī, jisme kūṭaṁ samāy. Lord, give me that much that I can feed my family; I don't remain hungry, and who comes to my door doesn't go hungry. That's enough." Work more spiritually; try. When you don't know what to do, then go inside you. Whenever you are scared, when you don't see the way out, pray. Mahātmā Gāndhījī said, "Physically, I can fast, but mentally I cannot fast. My mental tonic, my mental tonic, is my prayer." Whenever there was some hard decision that had to be made, on the bank of the river Sābaramatī in his āshram, you will see still there is a little platform. He was facing towards the east where the river is flowing, and he would draw himself there, and there he got again answer, intuitions, energy. And he came and he wrote in his diary. He made something which many of us couldn't do. Therefore, the answer is within you. We may make a mistake out of ignorance, out of weakness, out of temptations, out of certain circumstances, but finally, we have to make ourselves clear within us. Parents can give you birth; parents can give you money, but parents cannot give you the destiny. You have to face the destiny. Many times, the waves of the destiny push you off here to there, like a boat on the beach. Every wave comes and pushes the boat in another direction. And with life, it is so with us, that we are like a boat on the waves, and that destiny waves with us like waves with a boat. We are like that little boat, which gets a slap from destiny. But one day, one great wave will come and carry us to the shore. Then it will be boring, so again you want to come in, so come and go; we are the observer. This soul, this jīva, this jīvātmā, is tired, traveled around the entire universe. One great saint, his name Sūrdās, he was by birth blind, but very great. Kṛṣṇa appeared many times to him. When Sūrdās was singing bhajans, Kṛṣṇa was sitting and listening. That's right. Sūrdās said, "My lord, I am that bird sitting on the big ferry in the middle of the ocean; many times, I decide to fly away. After flying some hundred kilometers, I don't see anywhere to land. You know, oceans are thousands of kilometers. Often, I think about the ocean. We take off with an aeroplane from Los Angeles and land in 12 or 13 hours in Auckland, Wellington, in Auckland, New Zealand, landing near the ocean, 50 meters far from the ocean, and taking off also just 50 meters far from the ocean. All the time, there's ocean up in the sky, down ocean, neither left nor right, nothing visible. Time to time, some island comes: Hawai'i, Sāmoa, Fiji, but ocean. Lord, I am that bird on that ferry." Often I want to run away from you, but I can't find any shelter, my Lord; finally, you are my shelter. Again and again, that bird flies to the ferry and sits there to rest. The children run away here and there and finally come to the mother; similarly, we all ... Bhaktas, we are bhaktas of God. Bhaktas are Gurū Devī. Sometimes some destiny wind blows away, and we are searching for some other shelter, beautiful nowhere. That bird can't sit on the water, and if it tries to land on the water, then it can land twice—first time and last time; there is a fish waiting. Už na něj čekají ryby. Look, you have another shelter inside. A máte jiné přistřeší uvnitř. So, therefore, Lord, mé us jaházká pakši hům. I am the bird of that ferry. Jsem jako ten pták na lodi. Udne ký košiš karta hům, lekin kaj sarn nehy miltý he. So try to fly away. I don't get a shelter; again I come back. You are my shelter, Lord, in the entire universe, and your greatness—you never refuse me. That is the greatness of God. That ferry will never say to this bird, "The bird will say, 'Where will I go, my Lord?'" Therefore, it is said, "Gurū, give me your grace. Give me your love. Gurū, give me your grace."
