Asmita

A spiritual discourse on the final obstacle to liberation: the ego's fear of dissolution.

"You knock on the door of Brahman... And you ask, 'How will I live inside?' He says, 'You will not be there.'"

"We have a fear of losing ourself. We do not even want to die because this 'I', this ego, this 'me' wants to live."

The speaker describes the metaphorical moment at the threshold of Brahmaloka, where the final surrender of the individual 'I' is required for complete union. He explains how the innate fear of non-existence, the ego (Asmitā), causes even a devoted seeker to hesitate and cling to individuality, thus preventing the ultimate realization of Advaita Vedānta.

Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar

When we come to the very door of Brahmaloka, you are a yogī sitting in samādhi, in dhyāna. Now, the last step. Oh, my God, you will enter and become one. You knock on the door of Brahman, they open and welcome you. And you ask, "How will I live inside?" He says, "You will not be there." "Who will be there?" "There is only Brahman." "And me?" "Yes, you are only till the door." Beyond that, there is no 'me'. There is only 'I', the One. Thank you. Thank you. It was very nice to see Brahmaloka, but I worked so hard. I created so many things, and I have so many children. I cannot just dissolve. I want to be myself. So he says, "Yes, you will be thyself, but not in this individual form." You reply, "No, then I go back." Sābīja, Nirbīja. So the final, last seed is our ego, the 'I'. I want to exist. But the problem is this: we have a fear of losing ourself. We do not even want to die because this 'I', this ego, this 'me' wants to live. We do not know what will happen after death. So, here it is called Asmitā, the ego of self-existence. Everybody says, "I love you, God. I am your Lord, your God." Can you imagine that God comes to you? "Yes, Lord, you are everything, my father, mother." And suddenly, God comes and takes your hand. "Let's go." "I didn't mean this, Lord. No, no, ... no. It is too much. God, that's too much. I am yours, but I am good where I am. You go, please, back. That's it." So where is the reality? We have fear inside. Imagine a beautiful chariot, a beautiful basket, or a nice chair lands here like a helicopter and says, "Today is the day. Any one of you can decide to sit in it. We go to Brahmaloka." To be honest, I would say, "That's beautiful. That's the aim of my life. I will come, but I have to finish my OM Āshram. So come after, please." We still cling to 'I', 'my', 'mine'. That is him. That is also called Kleśa. Are you free? Even a person who is going to commit suicide, if someone comes and says, "We will take you to heaven," will suddenly change their thinking. "I don't want to die." So, Avidyā and Asmitā—ignorance—create that ego that says "I am," though you are not. You are not, but it insists "I am." You are not; you are just an exhalation of that Supreme, and that is existing in you, and He can inhale you back. That means only He is existing; we are not existing. That is called Advaitavāda Vedānta, which we have to realize either through the practice of Yoga, or Bhakti Yoga, or Jñāna Yoga, or Karma Yoga. This is the final truth a human has to realize. That is the goal. But our inner Vikṣepa does not let us. We can speak for years and years about this, or listen for years and years to these words, and satsaṅgas, and beautiful things. But in reality, we cannot endure. Fear is there. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
