Swamijis public lecture in Ljubljana

The Kumbh Melā is a cosmic festival symbolizing the quest for immortality and the purification of consciousness. Ancient tradition speaks of Sanātana Dharma, the eternal cosmic law governing all existence. Within this framework, divine and antagonistic forces emerged. Seeking the nectar of immortality, these forces churned the cosmic ocean. From this churning arose both divine gifts and poison. The poison threatened all creation, but was consumed and neutralized by Śiva, who thus became the blue-throated god. Drops of the eventual nectar fell upon four sacred river sites in India. The Kumbh Melā commemorates this event, representing the inner journey where one's spiritual practices churn the ocean of individual consciousness to distill the nectar of wisdom. This festival transcends earthly religion, aiming to awaken the divine power within and dissolve all duality in pure awareness.

"Śiva said, 'Give it to me.' And Śiva drank. He drank and became all blue."

"Your life should be full of nectar. Develop the Divine Śakti, not Āsura Śakti."

Good evening. The subject is the Kumbh Melā. Every maṅgala kārya—all that we do at the beginning—should be very nice, happy, and harmonious. In the ancient tradition of Vedic culture, the Vedas and Upaniṣads of India begin with a call, Svastivācana, for success, harmony, and peace. These are mantras from the Vedas, pure in the Sanskrit language. Our junior Swāmī Avatārpuri, who can speak in Sanskrit, will perform this ceremony with these mantras. Salutation to the cosmic light, Lord of our hearts. Adoration to Satguru Dev, Alak Purī. Dear brothers and sisters, good evening and welcome. Welcome and thanks to the beautiful city of Ljubljana. The mayor of this beautiful city, welcome. The representative from the Embassy of India, Śrī Dattājī, and all the dignitaries in this hall—it is my pleasure to be again here in the Šankarijo Dome. The name itself has great meaning, for it is where the beginning of the Kumbh Melā took place. Śaṅkara is Śiva, and a dome is a house. So, welcome to the house of Lord Śiva. Śiva has one name: Nīlakaṇṭha Mahādeva, the blue-throated God. And so, we are sitting in the blue stadium. Beautiful. The festivals which began in India ages ago were not targeted at a particular religion because there was no particular religion. There was only one religion: Sanātana Dharma. And that Sanātana Dharma was not a religion on this planet. Sanātana Dharma is the divine principle throughout the entire universe. Sanātana means the universal, and Dharma means principle—the effect from our acts. Each and every action should be done according to the cosmic law. There is a physical law of this world and a cosmic law. The laws on this planet are changing, but the cosmic law does not change. All the religions we know nowadays developed in these last centuries according to the teaching or message of the great masters. That great master was known as a Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya. Brahma is the cosmic one: Ananta Brahmāṇḍa Śāstra Sūrya, the endless universe with thousands of sun systems. That consciousness of that particular holy sense is spread around the entire universe. One is called Parameśvara, the lord or governor of the entire endless universe. And Īśvara is that governing principle within our sun system. Then there is Ātmā, or Mahātmā, that which governs on this planet. Ātmā, Īśvara, and Parameśvara—all these three are connected and function within the frame of Sanātana Dharma, the cosmic law. He who attained Self-Realization became one, one without a second. That one is, as in a novel, Trikāladarśī. Tri-kāla: kāla means time, and tri means three—the three times: past, present, and future. The consciousness of the self-realized merges into all these three times and becomes one again. But we are limited. We know something about yesterday and today, but we do not know our past life. We know only the present, what is going on, but we do not know what will happen tomorrow. You do not know what will happen in one second, and you are talking about tomorrow. But a Trikāladarśī knows everything. Those Trikāladarśī declared the time, though there is no time. In some way, it is a manifestation of time, a creation of the human intellect. But still, it is put in that law of mathematics that governs the entire endless universe. It is clearly written, the beginning and end of this sun system. The Vedas say what will be the life of the sun, but we still have time for that. Do not worry. So, Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya. That is called Guru, Guru Tattva. That is called Gurur Brahma. That Gurudeva is Brahma, the creator—the creation through that intelligence, the viveka. Guru is Viṣṇu, the protector, sustainer. And Gurudeva is Maheśvara, and he is Śiva, the destroyer of all the negative and the liberator, mokṣa. Śiva means the consciousness. According to those cosmic laws or principles, the creation is explained. Satya-yuga, the golden time. You can look in your yoga book, Hidden Powers in Humans, or on Google, about yugas, and you will know how long a Yuga is. Now, it is said there was only dark blue, nothing else—darkness. No more movements, nothingness. These two are there: space and consciousness. And within that is Śakti, the power that is called creation, the ability of manifestation. The explanation is only one: Eko’haṁ bahusyāmi—"I am one, and now I will multiply." These are the thoughts of creation. And there begins the first spūrṇa, the first vibration, first movement, first resonance. That is something like a first movement. There is Icchā śakti, the wish, the power of will. And there the first Nāda-resonance began. Nāda-rūpa Parabrahma—the form of the Supreme Parabrahma is resonance. And that is declared the sound Oṁ in the endless universe. That sound is in each and every atom. In every space, nothing is without that sound. Therefore, it is said that every day a yogī meditates on that Oṁ. With this resonance appears jyoti, a flame—beautiful, bright, blue flame. That is called Śiva Jyoti. It means the light of consciousness. And that one is known as Svayaṁ Bhūḥ, Ātmā. Ātmā is eternal. And Jīvā is not eternal. Through those spiritual festivals, spiritual sādhanā, practices, prayers, and ceremonies, this one drop, Jīvā, falls into the ocean of Śiva. So Jīvā changes into Śiva again. Now that drop is not anymore here; only one, the ocean. This was the beginning of the entire creation in the universe. Coming to our planet, the Trinity appears. That Śiva creates. Viṣṇu is the mentor of the creation of Śiva. And Śiva orders Viṣṇu to go and make tapasyā and live in the water. So the water element appears through that tapasyā, fire; therefore Viṣṇu is residing in the ocean. And Brahmā—out of the navel of Viṣṇu, sorry—comes the lotus. On that lotus, Śiva creates Brahmā upon it. This mythological picture is very nicely explained in your book, Yoga: The Hidden Powers in Humans, Chakras and Kuṇḍalinī. And Brahmā got an order from Śiva: "You are known as Prajāpita, Brahmā, the father. You are the holy father of this creation on the earth." And so the creation begins. It is Brahmā who is creating his children, or they are also his mentors, the ṛṣis—that is called Saptaṛṣis, and so on. The whole mythological story goes very long. The children of one ṛṣi, who were both brothers, one had his quality and one had a negative quality. That becomes what are called asuras and devas. Asuras are a negative quality. Asuras love night activities, and devas love the morning, dawn, light, and day activities. Asuras enjoy more night food, and devas enjoy more morning prasāda, and so on. Within this universe, they made one good space. That is called Svargaloka, like Svargaloka. So Svargaloka means heaven. The king of that heaven is now known as Indra, God Indra, the almighty one. And it is said in Svargaloka there is no old age; you are ever young, with no desires, perfect harmony, and beauty. Second, they created what is called Naraka, where there is suffering, illness, fighting, and all negative things. That is called hell, naraka. And apavarga is that cosmic world, cosmic consciousness. Devas were those who had positive qualities like meditation, prayers, goodness, mercy, humbleness. Through that, it became the law or principles of the religions. Before, they had to practice yoga. Śiva appears as meditating himself. From the Śiva Jyoti, he appears. So yoga is that one. Śiva is manifesting through yoga. God Kṛṣṇa writes very clearly in the Bhagavad Gītā: "Arjuna, time to time I manifest myself through my yoga māyā," meaning my yoga śakti. And those who were not disciplined, neither in eating nor in sleeping nor in drink nor in behavior, they developed negative qualities and are called asuras. But both want to live long. Even you are devas, but you have a wish, you have a desire. If you have no desires, you cannot live. You must have the desire of eating ice cream; otherwise, you do not get it. So, what is the best? They were in search of the nectar, immortality. So they were advised to churn the ocean of milk, called Kṣīrasāgara, the ocean of nectar. And how? Now I will do, and you can sit there and look at me. Or do you want to sit there? Okay, because you always want to see me. So, they decided on the churning of the ocean. The ocean is very peaceful, motionless. So, Brahmā said there is a big mountain, a very high, big mountain, like one big rock. They should use this as an instrument for churning the ocean. And that time was Vāsuki Nāga, a thousand-headed snake, very long. So they coiled that snake around the rock, a big rock, bigger than the Ljubljana territory. From Maribor to Koper, they said you will get what you are desiring. So, I think there is one slide I want to show for your imagination or for a clear picture. Now, on the mouth side were the asuras holding. And the tail side were the Devas. And how many yugas they were churning—thousands of years. In Satya Yuga, everyone had a long life, thousands of years, so they were not in a hurry; they had the time. Out of the churning of the ocean, in the fifteenth year, it comes: fourteen ratnas. Ratana means something precious. Also, Ratana, you can say precious stones. But anything which is very precious is called Ratana. And that, they are very important for our existence. And so, out of this ocean, begins to come one after another, something. The moon. The moon came from the churning of the ocean as a half moon. Amāvasyā is a dark night; there is no moon from sunrise to sunset, only darkness. Out of that moon came the light. Now, Rākṣasa said, "What should we do with the moon?" We do not want this. Devas, they said, what will we do with the moon? No, it is good. We shall take it and present it to Śiva. So you will see every time in Śiva’s picture, there is on his left side of the forehead a half-perpetual moon, like a new moon. After the dark night, the second moon day, like Śivarātrī, on that day you see the half moon or crescent moon, and you pray and you adore. That time, you will see Śiva complete his manifestation, and this moon, like a golden or silver, shining on his forehead, beauty. And also, that is why in Islam, the new moon has a great meaning, and therefore the prayers are directed to the west because of the moon. You see the new moon towards the west after sunset. Immediately after sunset, if you see the second day moon, it brings you happiness and your wish will come true, but do not forget it. And there is something very secret. Look to the moon, greet it, and then you must look to the silver. Keep silver in your hand. The moon represents the silver, gentle, soft light. Likewise, also came alcohol, Soma, very precious—not as a drink but as a remedy. It is for your use, not for abuse. Now you do not use alcohol; you abuse the alcohol. So Deva was asked, "What will happen with this?" Said, "Who will drink will become crazy. Only the crazy one will do." Then this we should give it to the Asuras. The Asuras were happy. They drank and said, "Let us go on working. Who will work?" He grew alcohol. What will he produce? The snake begins to vomit poison, so much. The goddess and devas were closing their nose and mouth. The poison will destroy the whole earth. It is our ambition, we did it. But now what to do? Exactly what now? They have drilled for the oil in the Mexican city, in the sea, the ocean. And that came out as oil, and difficult to control now; it will kill, destroy everything. What to do? The Devas and Asuras were very, very much unhappy, fearful, and scared. So they asked, "Go to the Śiva." Brahmā, Viṣṇu, all raised their hands up—sorry, we cannot do anything. Whenever there was trouble at the cosmic level, on this planet, finally they had to go and seek shelter in Śiva. Śiva said, "It is your ambition, your greed." They say, "Whatever it is, Lord, we cannot drink this poison, and we cannot throw it on the earth; it will destroy the entire earth." It is said God is merciful. My Grand Master, Grand Grand Master Devpurījī, used to say: God takes upon Himself the destiny of the devotees. Parents take on themselves the mistakes and destiny of children. Master takes the destiny of the disciple on himself. It does not matter how hard it is or how he will manage to digest. Śiva said, "Give it to me." And Śiva drank. He drank and became all blue, his throat and everything. Poison has its dharma, its nature. If poison will not act as a poison, no one will say it is a poison. Fire has its dharma, and a human has his dharma too. Śiva is known as a yogendra. Śiva is known as a yogī. Śiva is known as a meditator. Satyam śivam sundaram—the truth, the beauty, the Śiva. He kept the whole poison in his throat, did not let it go to the Maṇipūra, and he did Ujjāyī Prāṇāyāma and he neutralized the poison. But this part of the body remained blue, and from that time onward, he is known as the blue-throated god. And so, this blue śālā we are sitting in. So finally, many, many things came. The white elephant with the seven pranks, which you have in our kuṇḍalinī yoga book explained. They gave it to Brahmā, the creator. Finally, I want to make it short. Appeared God Viṣṇu in the form of Dhanvantarīya. Dhanvantarīya, he had a beautiful pot in his hand, and that is called Kalaśa, a pot full of the nectar. And that was the birth of the Āyurveda. That is why the God of medicine is God Dhanvantari. Most ancient is Āyurveda. From there comes what you call naturopathy, homeopathy, allopathy, and so on. The beginning, the father of all these medical systems, is God Dhanvantari. From Satya Yuga, that is it. Now, when they realize that they want to have this nectar, can you imagine? Battlefield. That time, wars began. These are two forces, asurī śakti and devī śakti, fighting. And both of them, some want to have nectar to live long, young, and enjoy, so God took it and ran away. And wherever they tried to catch him, the pot was full of it. The war was in the space, the space war. From that time, they created what is called the air force. Similarly, under the water, they developed the navy and ground force. The creator has created 8.4 million different creatures in three categories: Jalchar, thalchar, nabchar—creatures in the water, on the earth, in the space. All these three have enemies. All these three have both qualities, devī and āsurī. And so they have their fighting and protective forces there. And that is why we call it the navy, ground, and air force. Nothing is created on this planet till today by any scientist which is not explained in the Vedas and Indian or Hindu’s ancient scriptures. Those saints were able to make telepathy, and from telepathy came telephone. They were able to see at a far distance. It is called vision, far vision. That came on television. So everything was also flying, and the first aeroplane was before 10,000 years, at the time of God Rāma. Had the king of Sri Lanka, Rāvaṇa, and the name of that aeroplane was Puṣpaka Vimāna, the beautiful flower chariot. And the speciality of that aeroplane was, it could expand the capacity according to your wish: one seater or a thousand seaters, ten thousand seaters. Icchā Śakti, the wish, will follow. So, some drops of the nectar fell in Haridwar, on the bank of the Gaṅgā. The second fell in Ilāhābād, the unity where the three rivers—Gaṅgā, Yamunā, and Sarasvatī—meet. Third in Nashik and fourth in Ujjain. All these four places had rivers flowing, and these rivers are known as the holy rivers. So the pot, the kalaśa, is called kumbha. And melā is gathering. Hence the nectar is immortal. So nectar will remain ever and ever a nectar. So on this particular constellation, every twelve years, there is a radiance of that nectar again. And those who go there are in that divine radiance, and people believe that radiance—because nectar fell there in the river—if we bathe there, we will wash away our sins. So, the Vedic Dharma, Hinduism, from which Hinduism comes, Sanātana Dharma, water is holy. And the power of the water holder is Indra, God Indra. And Indra is the king of the heavens. Water is life. Your life is here. You want to see how your soul looks at man. And if one can get this Slovenian, Ljubljana clean water, it is crystal clear. Congratulations! So, they began there a ceremony called Abhiṣeka. Swāmī Avatārpuri was doing the ceremony, but the holy water was missing, you know, with the water. So the Master used to initiate the disciple on the bank of the river in the water. That must be, and holy water is known as the Chalnā Amṛta, in every Maṅgala kārya, in every good occasion, and the last ceremony, what we call the funeral, Antyeṣṭi we say. So there are sixteen saṃskāras, sixteen kinds of ceremonies for human beings, and the last is the funeral. There also the water must be. And I remember now, when you read the Bible, that Jesus also got the initiation. Whom did he get? You see, that is it. So we call it initiation, and in the Israeli language, they call it to baptize, also in Latin maybe. So you see now, I am not talking about multi-religion today, but you see the equality in every religion. When you think about Islam, it is equality, the moon, and Śiva. And I am not sure, but it is said that in Mecca there is a big Śiva Liṅgam, which is covered. Well, the water, the Gaṅgā, has a special story. When in the Kali Yuga, and in these yugas on this planet, devils, the asuras, came more. Please do not mind, I must tell you. Maybe you are not that one. But I am telling the definition as it is given. Asuras love night eating. Asuras enjoy alcohol, asuras enjoy meat, and asuras have ego, and so on. I need my security: Devas, sāttvika, milk, honey, nuts, fruits, what Mother Nature offers, and good smells, flowers. When you give a garland, you give flowers. When you give someone occasionally, then you give the flowers, because devas. Do you give them a garland of fish around the neck? No. So we have this quality still. So the Holy Father, Brahmā, he called the Gaṅgā. So Gaṅgā, he said, my daughter—Gaṅgā is the daughter of the Himalayan king, king of Himalaya, Gaṅgā and Pārvatī. So, there is a long story which I will not repeat. Gaṅgā came to protect the king and kingdom of Himālaya from Asuras. Then Gaṅgā said to Holy Father, "Father, my duty is finished, can I go back?" So Brahmā said, "Go to the Brahma-loka." But again, on this planet, the Āsurī Śakti began stronger. And no one could remove this Āsurī Śakti, which means the sin. So again, Brahmā told the Gaṅgā, "My daughter, go and liberate these souls on the earth." And she said, "Must I go, Lord?" The father said, "Yes, my daughter. I trust that you will be the one who will wash away the sins of all creatures, not only humans, who will bathe or have this abhiṣeka with your water. I give you this." Duty. But how long? These are the words of the Holy Father. Kali Yuga will be such that I will call you back. And you must know that slowly, slowly, Gaṅgā is disappearing. And greedy humans are creating more and more dams. And so the Gaṅgā is slowly, slowly drying out. These are the words of Brahmā. But we hope still she will survive. Mother Earth will survive. So Gaṅgā is known as Mother Gaṅgā, Holy Gaṅgā. Whether you believe or not, Gaṅgā does not matter how much polluted, you keep it in a bottle or pot, it will never get spoiled. The speciality of that water. So, people came for abhiṣeka, initiation. On that particular spot, then, who were the people? The ṛṣis. There were not so many humans. But slowly, slowly, the human begins to multiply, and there became more and more initiation there. And so, one day, it became a large gathering, millions. This Kumbh Melā, where I was two and a half months there, more than 70-80 million people were there. So it is not a religious festival in that sense. It is not for Hindus, not for Christians, not for Muslims, but for humans. And we are all humans, so religion should not make obstacles between these beautiful occasions or constellations. In consciousness, cosmic consciousness, there are no dualities of religion, no duality between male and female, and no duality between human and other creatures. It needs pure quality, and that is your life is nectar. So that nectar now, our negative qualities, is our asurī śakti. Our positive qualities, devī śakti. The spinal column in our body is that rock, long. The snake is our ambition, and the mind is that force which is churning. The ātmā is that which is trying to balance. Brahmā, the creator, tries to balance everything, and ātmā protects everything. And Śiva is that consciousness. All our jñānendriyas and karmendriyas—the senses of knowledge and the senses of action—these are the driving forces within us. And the eight chakras are the stations of the jewels, the awakening of the kuṇḍalinī, awakening of the consciousness, that which will lead us out of this quarreling of this life. So this endless ocean is within us. Our life is water. It begins with water, will merge into water, and there is nectar within us. All ego, jealousy, hate, that is within us. Iḍā, Piṅgalā and Suṣumnā—these are the three holy rivers, sympathetic, parasympathetic and central nerves. These three nāḍīs, mighty nāḍīs, merge at the eyebrow center, symbol of the unity of three forces. The light of Jīvanjyotī of the Śivajyotī, the Prakāśa, the Tilaka, third eye, and so the result is here. Nectar will come from, born from your vivekā. Jñāna Amṛta. That Jñāna Amṛta means the nectar of wisdom. If you go down, that will be poisoned. So, Āsurī Śakti are guides with us till the Viśuddhi Chakra. Every Chakra there is Devī and Āsurī Śakti, but when you come to Agñyā Chakra, you are the winner. Agñyā commands the seer, three Kāladarśīs, and that is, mythologically, in short, the symbol of the Kumbh Melā. So, why do people go to the Kumbh Melā? Not because of the religious festival, but to gain those immortal blessings in that great time. If you believe or not, if you are there, you are getting. And that is very important. So, the next Kumbh Melā is in about three years. And this time will be Prayāgarāja. Prayāgarāja means the pilgrim of all holy places, the king of all pilgrimages. What they gave the name Ilāhābād. So now you heard so many things. I hope that you can have this recording. They are recording, and there is one video, but they have shown you everything, so we will not see the video. This was meant to be seen after. But thanks to the people who are making technology, they are doing double work at the same time, that is called stress. So there will be no video. I wish that you have ever in your life Kumbh Melā. Your life should be full of nectar. Develop the Divine Śakti, not Āsura Śakti. Know that, not only that, whatever comes, you eat and drink. The Brahmā is with you, intellect. Let the subject of that viveka be the intellect. I wish you a very pleasant and blessed evening, and God bless you with good health and a long, happy, harmonious life. Spiritual development and that self-realization. If some words hurt you, forgive them. And what? You like it? Take it in this pocket, heart, and in the storeroom, and utilize it. With this, very nice good night, and thank you organizers, and thank you for your coming all. Thank you, and God bless you.
