The Light of Guru Pūrṇimā: Seeking Solitude, Sādhanā, and Self-Surrender

Guru Pūrṇimā reveals the necessity of solitude, sādhanā, and self-surrender.

Spirituality requires ekānta vās, living in remote peace free from pollution. In solitude, senses and mind become content, desires subside. Desires are the sole cause of suffering. In this age, aggressive temptations thwart successful practice. Seekers follow saints’ words to invert the senses inward. The mind and senses torment through passion, anger, greed, attachment, ego, jealousy, and ignorance. These are wild animals that instantly tear the seeker apart. Life is fleeting, and these inner beasts will destroy unless peace is found. Guru Pūrṇimā marks the birth of Vedavyāsa, who wrote the Vedas. It is a day of light that binds disciple to master. The living tradition rests on a direct master-disciple bond, not mere books. Perception creates reality; as vision, so creation. When vision fades, devotion breaks, and all shatters. You journeyed here for sādhanā, not for critique or diversion. Compromise nothing in quality; broken discipline cannot mend. Use this time so no regret remains.

Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara, Śrī Svāmī Maheśvarānanda Purījī, Gurū Deva, Kī Jaya. So, first of all, our humble salutations to the Lord of our Siddha Pīṭha, Gajananjī Mahārāj. Lord Gajananjī should always be remembered first, then Alakhpurījī, Devpurījī, Mahāprabhujī, Holy Gurujī. Humble salutation, prostration. And our humble prayer for the successful anuṣṭhāna for three weeks here in our beautiful āśrama, Mahāprabhujī. Mahāprabhujī Satsaṅg Foundation, Strilky, Czech Republic. Beautiful nature, very peaceful, far from civilization, and a very big park with good air. It’s a blessing to be here. Yesterday I was thinking about many tourist places—in the desert or seaside—but you know, all these tourist spots are overflowing and polluted. Polluted: mental pollution, physical pollution, sound pollution. Many people who go to the seaside now, in July and August, these two months, come disappointed. They are sorry that they went there because there is no ethic or moral principle. No one cares about anyone. You are no one, but you are the only one who should spend money. So, nowadays, very few places remain where you can be peaceful. In yoga, in spirituality, it is always advised to live in solitude, ekānta vās. Ekānta means a remote area—peace, sound pollution, no physical pollution. That was always described and mentioned in the Vedas, Upaniṣads, and Purāṇas. There are 108 Purāṇas, but the main Purāṇas are eighteen. And all the saints, the ṛṣis, they had a khaṇḍvās, peaceful. Slowly, slowly, you see around the world spirituality developing. In every religion, monasteries, or you can say āśramas, were created where there was a peaceful atmosphere. There is automatically spiritual development, automatically peace within oneself, where no desires come out. Your indriyas and manas are content, your senses and your mind, because desires are the cause of all suffering. Vāsanā hi duḥkha kā kāraṇa hai, Holy Gurujī’s favorite sentence. The desires are the cause of all troubles. Desire, greed is desire. Ego, to have a certain position, is also desire. Many, many desires. So, humans try to come to where the indriyas are antarmukhī, they become inverted. In this Kali Yuga, there are a lot of temptations, and temptation is full of aggressivity, cruelty, and vāsanās, the desires, and we try to fulfill these desires. Sādhanā cannot be successful. So those who really search for peace and spirituality within, they will follow the Guruvākya, meaning the words of great saints: Ekānta. You sit down and meditate, and you ask your mind and your indriyas, “How long will you torture me?” Your indriyas are torturing you, you know. Your mind is torturing you. Your vāsanā is torturing you. Kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, ahaṅkāra, īrṣyā, avidyā—these are all crocodiles. These are all wild animals, and they will tear you into a thousand pieces. Once I saw on Discovery or in a nature film, I think it was in Africa, where a group of lions, about fifteen or twenty, came to drink water. Before them, there was a very strong, big wild pig drinking water. Hot weather, very hot weather, so the pig was sitting in the water. As soon as he noticed that lions were coming—life is dear to everyone, it doesn’t matter who is who, humans or animals—no one would like to die, no one would like to have pain, no one would like to be killed, no one would like to suffer. So, the pig came out of the water quickly and tried to run away, to escape from the lions. And in that minute, the lions noticed the big pig. They attacked the pig. I tell you, maybe you have seen sometime in that film, within less than half a minute, there was no pig. One way, thanks to God, is that he could suffer less than half a minute. But they tore him into so many pieces. It didn’t take them a long time. Therefore, this life is like no time; it is very short. And these are the wild lions: kāma, passion; krodha, anger; lobha, greed; moha, attachment; ahaṅkāra, ego; avidyā, ignorance. Īrṣyā, jealousy; mada, pride—these will tear you away. Therefore, the only way to escape from that is in a state of peace, though you are that pig on that beach where there are hundreds of thousands of tourists, and now you see what’s going on. You try to escape, but there is so much temptation. Hari Om. Therefore, you know for what you came to this seminar. You came from far distances. There is someone sitting from Vancouver, coming from Atlanta, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia. There are also two from Africa, and Indians, and entire Europeans are here. Why did they come so far? They spent the money. For what? They could have everyone there in the whole country. But: Gurudev, śaraṇ tumhārī cintā merī miṭā denā. O Gurudev, I seek shelter in Thee; remove my worries. Karke dayā dayālu, be merciful, have mercy, O merciful. Please, let me bring me to the shore, the other side of the sea. Another thing is that Guru Pūrṇimā is beginning today. According to the Jyotiṣa (moon calendar) and the seasons, nature in these four seasons follows the moon phase, the lunar system. And therefore, the moon, jyotiṣa, the moon calendar, the lunar system, is actually the right counting of the astrological thing. And the moon is constantly changing, and similarly, your constellation is constantly changing according to your horoscope. And so, every twelve months, the full moon day is called Guru Pūrṇimā. It means the birth date or birth of the great saint Vyāsa, Vedavyāsa. Ved Vyāsa decided to write the Vedas in written form, as before they were only delivered verbally. So the Bhagavad Gītā, many Purāṇas, many holy scriptures, the Vedas, and the Upaniṣads were spoken and created by Vedavyāsa. Of course, every Upaniṣad is created by certain ṛṣis. And within all of them, Ved Vyāsa is known as one of the great seers of past, present, and future. Vyāsa, this Pūrṇimā is known also as Vyāsa Pūrṇimā. Because Vyāsa was so great, he was accepted as a guru, a master of all. And it connects every disciple to their master. Hindu religion, Vedic Dharma, is called a living religion. The tradition is a living master and disciple. It’s not only this book, and then it’s finished, nothing else. Vedic religion, what you may call like a democracy—democracy in religion, very good, free decisions—it is your heart suddenly surrendered to someone. You can, Sanātana Dharma, it says that you can find God in one stone. This is a small stone, and this stone—it is universal, immense energy. When you put it like this, you see Gaṇeśjī, and when you put it this way, you can see Gaṇeśjī, and when you put it this way, you can see Gaṇeśjī, and when you put it this way, you can see Gaṇeśjī. When you put it this way, you can see Gaṇeśjī, and when you put it this way, you can see Gaṇeśjī, and when you put it this way, you can see Gaṇeśjī. It can be Śiva. So it means, “Jaisī dṛṣṭi, vaisī sṛṣṭi.” How is your vision such that you see the symbol? For your husband, you are the most beautiful woman in the world. And for your husband, for you, your husband is the most beautiful man in the world. And as long as you have this kind of feeling and thinking, you have that beauty towards each other. There is no question of divorce. And when this is lost, then separation takes place. Ignorance, agyāna is so strong that even a child cannot keep you together. The child is that mighty power which keeps the mother and the father together. But your temptation, your ignorance, your pride, your ego is so dominating that you become blind; that vision is gone. And when vision is gone, then bhakti is gone. And when bhakti is gone, everything is broken. Therefore, Sanātana Dharma and Hindu Dharma, it says, let them believe how they believe. It is said that we don’t convert, we convince. Conversion is not the right way, but you convince them that spirituality, and therefore freedom, is called human rights. Eighty percent of human rights points are coming from the Upaniṣads, and some are from the Purāṇas, the human rights points. And so these are the Vedic dharma. So it means that you have the freedom to love that one in which you have the divine glory. Impossible to change. A drop fell into the ocean. Impossible for you to take the drop again, as it is out. And therefore, carefully decide, and that’s a lifelong decision. Not changing. There’s a beauty, but no one promised you change. You can change, but then change is a copy; it’s not original. So there are many, many things. Guru Pūrṇimā is a day of the light. So tomorrow is the Pūrṇimā; it’s already today in the constellation. And tomorrow we will have more lectures and more programs. I pray again to our Siddha Pīṭha to bless us for this Guru Pūrṇimā, that all our negative vicāra thoughts may purify. And then, during these three weeks, there will be beautiful subjects. Not only theories, but some particular practices also. So, especially our dear brothers and sisters are with us through webcast. Due to some situation, they can’t come, but they will be with us through the webcast. So, decide and know, be aware of what you came here for. To criticize, you can do that in your house too. To search for a partner, you can find one on your street corner. To gush up? You can do that anywhere, even in your office. For what did you come here? I tell you, today and one week after or ten days after, when you go back home, you should not feel sorry that you didn’t spend more time for your spiritual practice, sādhanā, and be punctual in every program. No compromise in quality and science. Ayurveda professor, Sardesh Mukesh Swamiji, in science, no compromise. And I said, in quality and spirituality, no compromise. Broken is broken. Hurry home. You can cry day and night. Yes, of course, it is your matter, you can cry. But it will not come back, that broken thing, and if then it comes broken. So don’t break your rules, and we wish you all the best today. And tomorrow’s program: at 9 o’clock begins Pūjā, Guru Pūjā. And here will be the morning prayer, the Satguru Āratī. Morning, 5:30. Everybody should come here for prayer. And do the pūjā to Mahāprabhujī. Everyone should greet when you come in. And then all will sit here and listen to the Guru Gītā. It doesn’t matter if it’s Kriyā Yoga, Anuṣṭhān Yoga, Haṭha Yoga, Karim Yoga, or any yoga—only yoga, no bhoga. All will listen to the Guru Gītā here. It will be in English. But many of you know it by heart in your language. After that, Guru Gītā, then you will go and make āsanas a little bit. Then you will have your tea, and then you prepare yourself for pūjā, if it’s sunny, good weather, on the meadow. If not, then here. And those who already came and greeted today, please, tomorrow don’t come, because there will be so many people, then I have to sit the whole day in one place. You can come, but you should be part of the satsaṅg. But if you want to give flowers or greet personally, then only those who were not with me today on the meadow. So, other programs will be announced. So Guru Pūjā morning will be 5:15, 5:30 here, prayer. Śrī Guru prayer, Gītā. This is our Guru Pūjā to Mahāprabhujī. And around 9 o’clock in the middle, then. The webcast will also be there. So, for today, all the best. Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī jaya, Alakh Purīśāmadeva Mādhav Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān kī jaya, Sanātana Dharma. Om Śānti.
