Satsang is the way

A satsang discourse on the value of spiritual community and true friendship.

"Brothers and sisters you can get in every life... But Satguru Dev and Satsaṅgī brothers and sisters, you can get only in a human life."

"If you give a hand, then hold the hand till the end. Do not leave your hand in the middle."

A spiritual teacher addresses a gathering at an ashram, emphasizing the supreme importance of satsang (association with truth) and spiritual companionship for self-realization. He expresses longing for the sangha, explains human life is a rare chance for such connection, and warns against spiritual laziness. The core message is a call to actively and faithfully care for one's spiritual family, illustrated by personal anecdotes about disappointment and the enduring nature of true friendship, culminating in a sung prayer.

Mahāprabhujī said in his beautiful bhajan: "Satguru satsaṅgyārī olu āve re, olu āve re, nain bharjā āve re." First, we know that the way to self-realization, the way to vairāgya, the way to understanding, the way to discipline, the way to self-control, and the way to perfect protection against bad habits, bad thoughts, and kuṣaṅgas—the best way is satsaṅg. Devatāoṁ ko bhī durlabha hai satsaṅg. Even the goddesses look forward to having satsaṅg. It is a rare opportunity for the devas. And now, in Kali Yuga, satsaṅg is becoming rarer and rarer, often ending only with eating. Satsaṅg: 'sat' means truth, and 'saṅg' means to be with. Even being with one person is called saṅgha. If a person is spiritual, a clear thinker, clear-minded, you will have a good influence. If a person is negative, abusing drugs and involved in different activities, there is a bad influence on you. So satsaṅg is the way—the way to self-realization, enlightenment, inspiration, and vairāgya. Especially when the satsaṅg is with Satguru Dev or with saints, it is like a full moon in the sky among the stars. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said, "I am longing for my brothers and sisters who always come to satsaṅg. Satsaṅgyārī Olu Avere, I'm longing. I am missing the satsaṅghīs who attend the satsaṅg. If I don't see them for long, I am longing so much that my eyes are full of tears." Our real family, brothers and sisters, are those who support us and are with us on this eternal journey through the endless universe. Brothers and sisters you can get in every life. Father and mother you can get in every life. Husband and wife you can get in every life. But Satguru Dev and Satsaṅgī brothers and sisters, you can get only in a human life. Therefore, human life has so much value. When you get human life, it is as if you get the passport, visa, clearance, and everything, and you are already sitting in the aeroplane of satsaṅg. Now you only have to take off. But if you are lazy, drinking tea or coffee somewhere while they announce the gate number—"Come quickly, come quickly"—and you do not go quickly, you will miss your plane. So again, the biggest enemy of the human is laziness. If we are not healthy, if we are not successful, then it is definitely our laziness. Today we are here in our beautiful ashram, the Śrī Mahāprabhujī Deep Satsaṅg Foundation Ashram. All yoga and daily life organizers, teachers, students—many are here. Not all can be from different parts of the world, but it is such a divine, harmonious atmosphere. God was really gracious; Mahāprabhujī is really blessing us that we have such a nice, clear sky and good weather, so we can sit in this meadow. We imagine when the day will come again that we will sit together on this meadow with such a beautiful sky and nice weather. We wish and pray to the Lord that we sit here together again. I do not know after how many 15ths of August I am again in Europe. Does anyone know? Because I always go to Guru Pūrṇimā in India, and Devpurījī is in Mahāsamādhi, and then 15th August is somewhere on the way. After a long time, we are in Strelky. Many times we are in Vyp, Hungary; many times in different places. All this means it is an immense support, a great support for our spiritual development. It is inspiration for us. We feel strength, that I am not alone. I have so many brothers and sisters on the same path, and we do care about each other. So if you would like to give me a birthday present today—these flowers and monies or this—that is okay. But the real present is different. I would ask you that you should care about your parents if they need help, your partner, your children. And you should care especially for your spiritual brothers and sisters. Sometimes a person is ill, one month in the hospital, and the yoga teacher does not know anything, and others also do not know. After one month from the hospital, he comes home for recovery for one or two months. The person in the hospital is very, very disappointed, thinking, "I could count on my yoga brothers and sisters and my yoga teacher. If something happens, they will come to me or ask where I am." But no one telephoned. No one found him at home, or no one wrote just a postcard: "Where are you?" That kind of disappointment is very painful. If you give a hand, then hold the hand till the end. Do not leave your hand in the middle. If you have a friendship, then cultivate the friendship. For me, it is like a big, big forest, not only a little garden. I planted so many trees, millions of trees, but still I do care. In my prayers and meditations, I pray to Mahāprabhujī to take care of them. I have no anger towards anyone, I am not jealous towards anyone, I am not offended by anyone. If I had these qualities, be sure, I would have been gone long ago. But I live in situations where I experience every day tensions between disciples, jealousy, and where there is, you can say, all kinds of qualities: there is hate, and this and that. When you experience something like this right on your birthday, or Christmas Day, or your marriage day, or your special day, it is a little bit not good. But I am very happy that you are all here. Little tension, but big happiness and freedom. That is something, so we do care. What I want to tell you: if you want to give presents, then take care of your friends. Mother, parents, father, husband, wife, children—this is natural. But besides this, the friends. When you do not see someone for one week or two weeks, you should make an inquiry. Maybe there are some who do not want to come anymore, and they do not want you to ask them. But you could write a postcard, SMS, or email: "I worry, what about you? Where are you? And if you do not want to come, it is okay. All right, your decision, please let me know how you are. That is all; I do care." The person who does not want to come will not come and will go away and will not even answer you. But the day will come in his or her life when that person will turn back to you and will make the steps towards you and say, "Hello, I am sorry I did not answer your letters, because there are so many disappointments in the world, and we are searching for that solid shoulder where we can lean our head." So, yoga and daily life do care so. Our logo is "We Do Care," or our slogan, yes. What do we say? "We do care," yes, that is it. It is such a beautiful... It does not matter, young or old, ill or healthy, from which country, and it does not matter when you became a friend or if someone is coming a few times to your programs and disappearing. Then you should make an inquiry. That will be great for you, and so this is the best thing we can have. We do care. Who did not get prasād till now? Please, Mahāprabhujī. Hey boys, you did not start to give prasād. You did not start. You start not by eating, but by giving it to others. They start eating, that is it. When I came to Austria and here, Germany, there was one song: "The real friendship should never shake at the end; it is when death will take my life, then I will stop to be faithful." That was very wrong. So I corrected that song a little bit: "Even death takes my life, I will not stop to be faithful." That is it. That is why Paramahaṃsa Yogānanda said, "Even if I die, look into my eyes, they will say mutely, 'I will be dead.'" And so, we do care. If we put this in our mind, then I can tell you, next year, if we survive to my birthday, we will have more happiness. With people, with us, it is our ignorance. We think it belongs to me; it is the biggest ignorance, the biggest. Even this body does not belong to you, about which you are very proud, and this and that, going to the doctor and operation and this or... You know, it is a stranger's house you are repairing, no? And when you go out of this house, they will not pay you back what you repaired. So nothing is ours. Why are you angry? Why are you jealous? Why are you doing this and that? That is the best. The mantra to make a good friend is: give up harsh words. And sometimes, you need not to speak. You can see on the face—face reading in psychology, face reading—and someone is smiling, but in the eyes, you can see... In the eyes, what is going on? And therefore, Mahāprabhujī said in bhajan, "Give the Madhuram." Nirmala Vane Jī Bhavan Chandana Śarī Vane Bhavan Chandana Śarī Nare Bhavan Chandana Śarī. He was the reason for my birth, the reason for my death. He brought me the true Saṅgha, the supreme Guru Swamījī. He was the one who changed my birth. Mar Hari Guru Rākīlā, Mar Samarat Rākīlā. Nā Milatā Taujī Oṭi Mōṭi Āpāre. Ārē, Oṭi Ālak Chora Sī Mē Jāvatā Mē Janamā Janamā Mārāja.
