Patanjalis Yogasutras - Nectar of divine words

A spiritual discourse on the nectar of wisdom and sensory discipline.

"Vācanāmṛta means the nectar of the words of wisdom spoken by the master."

"Patañjali is saying, if you can master your thoughts, then your practice or sādhanā will improve."

Swami Avatarpuri explains various forms of spiritual nectar, focusing on the sanctity of the Guru's words (Vācanāmṛta) and the nectar of wisdom (Jñānamṛta). He details how sensory input, particularly through hearing, sight, and smell, generates restless thoughts (vṛttis) that obstruct meditation. Citing Patañjali's Yoga Sūtra, he emphasizes that controlling these senses is essential for mastering the mind and progressing in yoga practice, sharing personal anecdotes about his own lack of smell as a divine grace.

Amṛta, nectar. There are many different kinds of nectar: Vācanāmṛta, Jñānamṛta, Pañcāmṛta, Caraṇāmṛta, and so on. Vācanāmṛta means the nectar of the words of wisdom spoken by the master. If you read your holy book or it is read by some person, it has a different effect than when read by a holy saint. Because the person who is reading, the spiritual person—what we call the holy saint—in his or her words there is the divine nectar, Vācanāmṛta. Therefore, in bhajan, Mahāprabhujī said these words of the saints everyone cannot understand. Those who are fortunate ones can understand the Guru Vākya or Vācanāmṛta. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said in one bhajan, so that, that word that's called. And this Guru Vācanāmṛta, Guru Vākya, Guru Bāṇī, only Guru Mukhī can understand. Nugra, Man Mukhī cannot understand. Man Mukhī means he who or she who is not initiated by Brahma, Niṣṭhā, Śrotriya, Śatguru, and heaven got the nāma dāna, that name of God, the mantra. That's called manomukhī. Manomukhī means one does or decides whatever he or she likes. Yes, sometimes good, but mostly it comes wrong. And that's why, temporarily in the beginning, you like this, but then you are in trouble. There are troubles. Guru Mukhī is that one who follows the Guru Vākya. Guru Vākya is the Śāstra Vākya, what is written in holy books, what is written in the scriptures, spirituals, the Vedas, the Upaniṣads, and so on. So Vācanāmṛta, this nectar goes to our body through our hearing system. And through this hearing system, our ears, our hearing capacity will be better. And all the sin, all the negative words which you heard the whole day will be purified. There are very few people in the world who don't talk badly about others. Who doesn't talk bad? And if you don't have anyone to talk bad about, then they talk about the telephone. My God, it doesn't function. And the car and parking place, Pravda. So, all the times we are hearing negative words. Means the negative vibration, and that goes through our ears. It causes a tension. It causes pollution in our consciousness. And it causes negative thoughts again. The words that we call positive, that is guruvākya, or blackmailing. And blackmailing goes quickly. When you grow some seeds in the garden, then the other weeds grow quicker than our seeds, which we planted. Someone tells you, "Do you know what Swāmījī told her about her nails?" Others will say, "What? No, tell me, what did he tell her?" You know, it quickly goes. If someone will say, you know, Swāmījī said every day we should practice. He's not interested. So both are the Vākyas. Now, how does it influence our brain? Vācanāmṛta. Jñānamṛta. Jñānamṛta means the nectar of wisdom. Where there is wisdom, there is nectar, and nectar means immortality. That will lead us from the darkness to the light, to immortality. Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya. Lead us from the darkness to the light. Caraṇāmṛta, the holy water of Gurudev's feet. Caraṇāmṛta, rare. It is said even Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa, they are longing for that Caraṇāmṛta. And it is true, wherever Gurudev walks, in that house or in the shop, prosperity follows, Lakṣmī follows. In every holy sense, they have a special foot-soul line and some different signs on it, which mean prosperity and wisdom. And all the negative black magic and negative powers disappear. Therefore, there is one bhajan from Kabīr Dās, a very nice bhajan. Jāgara tyāre bhāgya bhalā, jāgara santa paḍhare. Fortunate are they in whose house Gurudev comes, steps in their house. Kara kṛpā bhava sāgara tāre, and through his mercy, he will let us cross the ocean of ignorance. The ocean, this worldly ocean. When the saint comes to your house, you should welcome them with a warm heart, with respect, and give them a place to sit. Then wash the holy feet and take the drink, this nectar, the water. Those who know the meaning of the caraṇāmṛta, they enjoy pañcāmṛta. There are five different kinds of amṛta, nectar, that are used for the pūjā also. So, Patañjali, in the second verse of the sūtra, he said, first, your yoga practice will be successful when you can control the thoughts, the restless thoughts. Or your yoga practice begins if you can master your thoughts. But day by day, every day, we get so many different kinds of words and sentences through our hearing system, which creates an immense amount of thoughts. Like you cannot see the sound, but sound is there. We cannot see the waves with the remote controller, but the waves are there. Can you imagine? You are standing in front of the television, and someone is with a remote control, putting the television on. This ray goes through your body. It's like a very gentle bullet. All healthy cells there are damaged. We know that all these mobile telephones, the cellular telephones, and cordless telephones in the sleeping room and in the room and children's room are most harmful, they said. Microwaves, when you put them on, are like a volcano. We have a small video. Some research centers made these pictures, and also the computer. When you are sitting near a computer, like you are sitting in front of the fire flames, this is an invisible fire flame. And they said if you put two cordless together and you put an egg between, the egg will be like boiled after some time. Sometimes someone told me, just four or five days ago, and he made a demonstration. So, can you imagine? There are two telephones, one here and one here, and cordless. And then you see what's happening, or between two computers which are on, so you cannot... See with these eyes, but there is similarly the sound pollution; whatever you hear creates a tension. Therefore, it is said in the Upaniṣads, do not hear bad things. Keep your ears closed. Don't see the bad things. Whatever we see creates a thought. And that's why when we meditate, we close our eyes, so somehow we block the possibilities of getting more vṛttis in the mind. What you see, like that you create a world around you. And what you hear, like that you act also. So these are two indriyas, jñāna indriyas, the two senses of knowledge, the hearing and looking. If these two indriyas you can control, you have mastered a lot of things, and this is the cause of the citta vṛttis. And the third one, which is more intensive like that, is like a remote controller, yesterday while driving. From Vienna to Strilky, I put on the radio to hear the news, and there was one, uh, one program interview or some kind of a radio program. The subject was, "I smell you." What? "I smell you." And they said, "Everyone who can smell, minimum 300 different kinds of smell you are smelling every day." And the smelling senses are so gentle and so intensive; though they are gentle, they are very awakening. It reminds you. It awakens your memory of what you've forgotten. Sometimes on the radio, they said, "You remember the particular smell of the cooking of the grandmother." And when you get that smell of some good food—grandmothers were cooking good now. Mothers, they are fast food. They don't know what to cook. What a funny thing. Then ladies go for a cooking course. Oh God, ladies, by birth, they are the best of the best of cooking, and they learn automatically at home, but when... What you didn't see the whole at home, of course. Then you have to learn. We have sixteen different kinds of knowledges, and one of the sixteen is called Pakśāstra, cooking. And every mother, every woman, is born with this talent to cook perfect. Now, I... Said, "I go to Āyurveda kitchen cooking. I go to vegetarian cooking." They asked me when I came first time to Europe, "Swāmījī, can you teach us cooking course?" I said, "What?" I said this, "I have behind me, when I was five years old, I could cook." Everything, this is the easiest thing, ladies, but you lost it. You lost the knowledge. Anyhow, that particular smell reminds you of your grandmother. Maybe it reminds you of your small dog. Maybe it reminds you of your husband who died. And it was so many things. Which I will not allow you, so the smell awakes in you the memory, meaning citta vṛttis. So from this jñāna indriyas, the sound, the smell, and the visions, these three are very hard to control. One yogī said, "In this body, there are ten indriyas, ten senses." But rare yogīs have all under control, but two you cannot trust still. One is svādindriya, the taste: "I like this ice cream, yummy, yummy," and the sexual feelings. These two indriyas, if you can, it is there, it is filling there, taste is there. Everything is there, but you can say yes or no. You are not a slave of that. So, the most powerful are three: the sound, the visions, and smell. Yes, smell is beautiful—ah, this tree, that tree, this flower, these flowers. And it's a very hot day. You are sweating, and you get on the bus, and the bus is crowded. You are standing, and it just happens that you are standing next to someone who is holding on like this, a tall man, and your nose is just near his intensity. So sometimes to smell is not good. So lucky are they who can't smell anything, no. Lucky are they. Is there anyone who can't smell anything here? What kind of people you are? No one is there who cannot smell anything. Okay, very good. You are lucky ones, maybe or not, but a person like me, I can, I know only the word called smell. Or good or bad smell, rest I don't know anything. So it means I can't smell anything. You can put the most beautiful smell near me, I will not notice. Or you can put the most stinky things around me, I will not notice. May I feel vomiting when something is bad, but not so when I go to the bus? I have no problem. So one day I asked Mahāprabhujī in meditation, "Mahāprabhujī, what is smell? Why can't I smell?" Mahāprabhujī said, "I would like, I wanted to have you comfortable time." I say, "What do you mean, comfortable?" He said, "Because you have to fly so much, and when you are flying in aeroplane, they open different kind of alcohol and meat and fish." Oh, God, you... Know who is a pure vegetarian and who doesn't drink alcohol? For them to be in an aeroplane is a hell, I would say. Smoking is better, but this different kind of meat and alcohol, this is such a stinky. Many people vomit, and that's why they have a vomiting bag in front of them. Yes, that's it. So vṛttis, yogaḥ citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ. Patañjali is saying, if you can master your thoughts, then your practice or sādhanā will improve. It will proceed. If you can't control your thoughts, then you cannot meditate. You are sitting in meditation, having your mantra practice, cidākāśa, dhāraṇā, or whatever it is. And you are thinking, "I hope someone will give water to my garden." You are at home in the garden or your plants. Of course, it's a good thought. Then you are again thinking, "I hope my neighbor's dog will not go every day making dirt in my garden." So thoughts are running. You are sitting here, but thoughts are there. Once, Mīrā asked the great saint Tulsīdās, "What should I do in my family, where I am married?" They have no devotion to God at all. And Tulsīdās said, "Where there is no bhakti to Rāma, that place is not for living." And then she's answering, "Yes, but you know, here is only my body. My thoughts and my mind are there where my Lord is." So, the physical body is here, but your feelings are there where your beloved, whom you love—the God, the beautiful, or anything—Mother is going. For shopping, but her feeling is with the child, the child at home alone. She wants to come very quickly back, that's it. So vṛttis are going and coming, and when the thoughts are there, and thoughts go out of the body, means your aura. Then there is nothing, and when there is nothing, your practice cannot be successful. But you cannot block your thoughts; you cannot lock your thoughts. Therefore, control the senses. Don't listen; don't hear the negative talks from people, even if it's a... Negative, you say, "Thank you, it is not my subject. I don't want it, and it is not even my subject. I know. You need not tell me." Hurry home, or don't try to see that kind of picture of the people or things which disturbs you, which awakens the negative. Feelings, and not go to certain places where stinky things are, smells, and reminds you days and days. You know, this morning I saw such ugly nails, and still, the entire time when I was eating, I had very unpleasant feelings, and then I had... Afternoon, little rest, and again I saw these nails, we ugly it is, oh God. You see, my consciousness is so clean, so pure, and suddenly when comes though we should be above beauty and non-beauty, but you know, sometimes it is really disgusting. I was flying from Bangkok to Hong Kong, and Hong Kong to Oakland. Between Bangkok and Hong Kong, in front of me in business class, one couple was sitting, and they got fish. They were small fish, and they were taking like this. Eating like that, Umapurī was sitting with me, and Umapurī began to vomit, and it took her ten days to recover. This smell, I say, "Thanks to Mahāprabhujī that you told me, 'You have to fly many times. I take your smell senses away,' so you know." There are two things: ego and self-respect. Ego and self-respect. The self-respect is different than the ego. And self-respect means you have to respect others. Not only that you do what you like, but you should look that others have also. Proper impression from you? Nowadays, people are completely different. Going for a walk with the dogs in the park, on the zoo salt, they have from the dogs. Coming at home, sitting on the chair, both legs on the table, in one hand is Coca-Cola on the... Pump it and drill through the nose. There are people like this. Even they go sleeping with their shoes. And thanks to God, when they open their shoes, oh my God, you should not be near. Many people, they don't wash their socks for days and days. That's why I always tell people in the Yoga Nidrā, "Head to my side, though I don't smell." But I can feel vibration, therefore vṛttis. Yogaḥ citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ, Patañjali especially concentrates on this point, that we have to take care of our external world, that it doesn't enter in our... Consciousness creates more restless thoughts, so to respect others means to respect thyself. So when you have proper dress, proper hairstyle, and proper things, it means not only that you look beautiful, but you should look beautiful for others too. And don't dress so much that others can harm you. That's it. So citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ, without this you cannot master your yoga sādhanā. Okay, health is okay. You have āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, no problem. Good air, enjoy. That's also something, but that is not all in our life.
