Who is your meditation dedicated to

A discourse on the glory and transformative power of the Rāmcaritamānas scripture.

"By listening to this holy book, one realizes śānti, peace."

"Happy and lucky and fortunate are they in whose mind is dwelling the divine play of God."

The speaker expounds on the Rāmcaritamānas, describing it as a purifying lake that cools the restless, elephant-like mind burning with desires. He narrates its divine origin from Lord Śiva, who shared it with Goddess Pārvatī, and emphasizes that immersing one's consciousness in God's glory, rather than in worldly negativity, is the source of true happiness. The talk uses allegories, including a stubborn goat and an iron spoon, to illustrate the need for receptivity and the removal of ego to absorb the scripture's blessings.

Śrī Rāmacandra Bhagavān Kī Jai, Śrī Deveśvara Mahādeva Kī Jai, Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai. Sab viddhi purī mano harjanī, sakal siddhi pradāmaṅgal khanī, vimal kathā kar kī na rambhā, sunat na sahī kāmad dambhā. Likewise, the glory of the holy place Ayodhyā, which is in every aspect the most beautiful and attractive place, gives all kinds of perfection—the siddhis, kalyāṇa, mokṣa—and purifies the mind. With this, I begin to describe the glory of God. Those who listen with adoration and a pure mind will be freed from kāma, mada, and dambha—passion, ego, and pride. The name of this holy book is known as Rām Mānas Caritra, Rām Caritra Mānas. This is the līlā, the divine play of God Rāma, in my mind, in my consciousness in this world. By listening to this holy book, one realizes śānti, peace. This mind is like a mighty elephant, and this elephant-mind is burning in the fire of desires. There are different kinds of fires. One is called Dhavanala. This Dhavanala fire exists in the cold; when it is very cold, everything burns. Your skin burns from the cold. Certain cold winds come and destroy everything. So, like this, that mind, the elephant of that mind, is burning in this dhāvanā. If it comes and jumps into this manaḥ sarovara, into this Rāmcaritra Mānas, then it will find happiness again. Do you understand? Our mind is a mighty elephant. Holy Gurujī said this mind is very rude, very unlearned. In this bhajan he said it is a maṭhī elephant. To catch the maṭhī elephant and ride him is not an easy job. When the wild, mighty elephant comes towards you, what will you think? "My dear, disappear." That elephant comes like the dark night. They are beautiful from a far distance. That mighty elephant is suffering in this forest of the world, burning from desires. In the heat, he suffers. He will find peace only if he finds a beautiful lake with nice, cool water. Not only the elephant, but every creature is happy. When the elephant goes in, his skin feels good. He takes a full trunk of water and makes his own shower. So now we know from where the shower system comes—it is an imitation from nature, from the elephant. He takes a lot of water, I think 100 litres, at least 50 litres, and then he makes a shower. Sometimes when the whole bathroom is wet, you say, "Oh, I was showering like a wild elephant." So that suffering mind, that restless mind, finds peace and happiness if it dives into the lake of the Rāmcaritra Mānas, into this glory of God Rāma. It is not very cold, nor very hot. It is pleasant. So your mind will be peaceful and happy when you listen to the glory of God. Rāmcaritmānas Munibhavana Bīrche Usambhusuhāvana Pavana Tribidadosadaridāvana Kalikuchalikulikalusnāsavana. This Rāmcaritmānas, which all saints and holy men love, this very pure Rāmcaritra Mānas was told or created by God Śiva. This Rāmcaritra Mānas will remove all three duḥkhas, three troubles: Ādhibhautik, Ādidaivik, and Ādhyātmik. It removes all troubles and will remove poorness. It will make you rich. "Poor" means in karmas; our luck is very poor. Whatever we are doing turns in the wrong direction. But through God's name, inwardly you will become rich: happiness, satisfaction, joy, ānanda, bliss, divine consciousness; śraddhā, confidence, and all these best qualities. In this Kali Yuga, the remover of all sin is the Rāmāyaṇa. Pāi śuṣamau śiva-manabhāsā rachima eṣa nīja mānas rākha. Pāi śuṣamau śiva-sanabhāsā tāte rāma-carit mānas-bara. God Śiva created this Rāmāyaṇa. It was in his mind, in his heart, in his consciousness—a beautiful, beautiful thing. Sometimes we have something beautiful in our mind to tell, to create, to explain. It is your inner project. But you do not tell everyone. Many will not understand. You preserve it in your mind and find the right time to tell or give it. These ideas—and many have negative things—are just waiting to be told further. These are free communication techniques; they do not cost anything. It is advertising free of charge, and those have no value. So, think over what you have in your consciousness, in your mind, and to whom you should tell it, and how, and if it will have value. Will it help you, help others, help all of you? Lord Śiva had in his mind this divine glory of the Rāmāyaṇa, and he was waiting for a particular time. Then, when God Śiva found the best time, he preached this to Pārvatījī. One day, Śiva saw that today Pārvatī was more concentrated, more relaxed, and more happy. When you are relaxed and happy, how does your face look? Like a full moon, a nice full moon smiling. So when Śiva saw that today's Pārvatī was in ānanda, she was ready to give everything to the whole world, whatever they want. That is mother love. A mother is never angry with any children. She loves all kinds of children: human children, animal children, or her own child. She will not kill other children to feed her own children. So do not kill chickens to feed your children. The divine Mother, the mother of the universe, Pārvatījī, was very happy sitting there. Śiva saw this in his heart, and Śiva was very happy also. When you are happy, then others are happy. Your family members are happy. There are very rare people who want to see you unhappy. Most would like to see you happy. If one person is unhappy in the family, the whole family is unhappy. They go to the doctor, to a psychiatrist, to someone to talk, because you are unhappy. You are not born here to make others unhappy; you are born to make others happy. And no one can make you happy; only you can make yourself happy. So, you first come out of your inner cold, dark, foggy state—like the month of November, you know? Foggy, cold. The whole nature is falling apart. Birds are sad; there is no joy. What is that life where there is no joy? That is why… what is spirituality? When there is no joy? That is why it is called temple dance. Even in the temple, there was a dance in front of the temple, in this space, the hall, called the nṛtya śālā, the dancing hall, where the Devas come and dance, where bhaktas come and dance. Religion must be happiness; it is beautiful. But in November, even the birds' words are sad. So do not let November come into your consciousness. Always be in the spring, beautiful, ever blossoming and ever sun shining. You must work for that yourself; otherwise, no one can help. If someone tries to help you come out of it, you do not come out. There is a nice, small waterfall, very nice, pure, cool water. A farmer had a goat. The goat was outside in the garden eating some plants and grass, but the goat was very thirsty. So the farmer put a rope around her neck and took her towards the water. When the water was nearer, he wanted to pull her a little quickly, but a goat does not like any kind of force. Immediately she stretched both her legs, and that man was pulling and pulling. But she, though very thirsty, did not want to come to drink water because she would lose her pride. So tell your inner goat: please do not make any barriers, give up, be gentle. And so, Bhagavān Śiva, God Śiva, when he saw this in his heart, talked about this Rāmcaritramānas. He also gave it the name of the play of God Rāma in his mind, in his imagination, in his intuitions. How beautiful is that, when in your consciousness, in your mind, the divine glory of God is playing. It is beautiful. Or, is some person whom you do not like playing in your mind? One day, a person was very unhappy and very jealous. God came to him and said, "My child, why are you so sad?" The person said, "Yes, Lord, I do not understand. Though I have my mantra, I have your name, my Lord, I pray, I perform anuṣṭhān, still I am unhappy. God, tell me, please, why?" God said, "Well, I came to ask you a question, and you are asking me another question." The person said, "Lord, please, only you can answer me." God said, "During your prayer, during your meditation, during your mantra practices, during your free time—how much do you think on me, and how much do you think on those persons whom you do not like? If you are jealous about someone, constantly his or her picture is in your consciousness. Is this true or not? Am I wrong? If you have some problem with something, though you are praying, you have those pictures, or the telephone call, or that letter which is written by a person, or those words of that person and a picture of that person. We should not like it, though you do not like it, but it is there because you are always thinking about that. So, my child, you repeat my name, and you are praying to me, and you are meditating on me only as a formality. In reality, your entire feelings are dedicated, concentrated on those persons or those things." So unfortunate ones are they in whose mind is dwelling such a quality, and such people, which makes them jealous and unhappy. And happy and lucky and fortunate are they in whose mind is dwelling the divine play of God. That is different. No one makes differences. Only you make the difference. That is all. Move from one room to the other room. That is all. But you are torturing yourself inwardly. And when you are tortured day and night by yourself, you go to the mirror and you will see yourself completely exhausted. There is no energy left at all to move your cheeks a little bit up. So God Śiva, in his consciousness, in his mind, had the beautiful glory of God: the light, the joy, the happiness, the miracles, the kindness—how God is. Oh, my dear friends, oh wise ones, I tell you this glory of God Rāma. Listen, listen carefully. Do not miss even one small sound of this kathā I am telling. You know the glory of water? We do not know. We are nearly sitting in the water. But sometimes a situation appears. Suddenly, someone is in a Sahara or in dry mountains. There is no water at all for hundreds of kilometers, nothing. If you have there one water bottle, each drop of that water has great value for you. You do not want to lose even one drop. Then we know what water means. Now we do not know. Similarly, those who are searching for God in that way, those who have a thirst for spirituality, they do not miss anything. They will listen. And listening means not just that you understand the words that are told; it is manana-savikāra karanā—you have to accept it, think over it, and realize it. When your small baby begins to say some words, as soon as that child tells you something, at the same time you become happy. Or, someone makes a phone call for which you were waiting a long, long time and tells you something, at the same time you are listening and at the same time you are happy. That means now you understand; that means you realize. So Tulsīdāsjī said this: God Śiva said, "Just now, when you will listen to the Rāmcharitra Mānas, then you will be happy. And if still you are not happy…" There must be something wrong. That means water is falling, but not on the earth, but on an iron rock, which does not absorb the water. Like Mahāprabhujī said, "An iron spoon, an iron spoon, stirring the halwā, but that spoon never tastes the halwā." After you clean it, the iron does not take any taste of the halwā on it. But if it is a wooden spoon, it will absorb the whole taste. So do not be iron; just be like wood.
