Pride is an ego trap

A spiritual discourse on the power of speech, ego, and divine play, using the story of Nārada.

"One should be very careful in saying something to someone. If you throw a stone, it doesn't matter who is in the front; the stone will hit that person."

"No one is wise and no one is foolish. It is only God's will. To whom he will, he gives good knowledge and good thoughts, and to whom he will, he takes these good knowledge and thoughts away."

The speaker narrates the story of sage Nārada, who, after deep meditation in a Himalayan ashram, is targeted by a fearful Indra. Indra sends Kāmadeva (the principle of desire) to disturb Nārada's samādhi with springtime allurements and heavenly dancers. When this fails, Nārada's subsequent pride in his victory creates a mighty ego, leading him to ignore Lord Śiva's warning. The talk explores themes of karma from speech, the nature of fear and jealousy in spiritual competition, and how ego arises even after spiritual success.

It is something through which all beings are suffering, the physical as well as the astral beings. We used to say, "Your words should come true." In German they say, "Dein Wort in Gottes Ohr," because it comes true. Therefore, one should be very careful in saying something to someone. If you throw a stone, it doesn't matter who is in the front; the stone will hit that person. If we throw a stone, regardless of who is standing in front of us, the stone will find the person. Either it is a human, an animal, or a god. From time to time, for the sake of the bhaktas, God has to go through the curse too. Because he is searching for a reason. Even God cannot act without some reason. And if there is no reason, then God will create some reason. And we may not understand, but He knows why He is doing. God Rāma had also many curses. Like every other incarnation had. It's hard to remain without, but there are some who are without curses. When Śiva told that Nārada gave the curse to Viṣṇu, Pārvatī was surprised. How is it possible? The person who loves someone very much adores them very much. How is it possible that a person can give a curse? What made him give the curse? Pārvatī said, "For which reason did the Lord of Lakṣmī get the curse? Lord Śiva, I am very much surprised. I can't understand. How did Nārada fall into the māyā of ignorance?" It's surprising because sages like Nārada, he doesn't fall very easily into some doubts. This is very surprising to me, because a person as wise as Nārada does not fall into doubt so easily. He smiled and he said, "No one is wise and no one is foolish. It is only God's will." To whom he will, he gives good knowledge and good thoughts, and to whom he will, he takes these good knowledge and thoughts away. Great sage Yājñavalkya says, oh, says Bharadvāja, listen, I am telling you something about Lord Rāmaṇa. Listen with great respect. Tulsīdāsa said, "Give up your ego and pride, and moha, your ignorance. Meditate on Lord Rāma. Repeat his name. He is the liberator. He can free us from sin. He can set us free from our sins." In the Himalayas, there is a very beautiful, beautiful cave. And near that cave, this divine holy river Gaṅgā is flowing. That ashram in the form of a cave, it was so beautiful, very beautiful ashram, beautiful view, peaceful atmosphere, nice, good, cool air, not very hot, not very cold, very clean, pure, nice. Gaṅgā is water. Gaṅgā is flowing. Perfect place for meditation. For practicing your sādhanā. That's an ashram. Ashram means where you can have shelter. The shelter, not center. Shelter. Where you are welcome. And where you should work? The best way to get rid of the karma is karma yoga in an ashram. Without bhakti, you cannot do karma. And without karma, you cannot do jñāna. And without jñāna, you cannot be successful in rāja. All yogas are united in one. Ashram means where all creatures feel happy, clean, nice trees, beautiful, where when you enter the boundary of the ashram, then you feel immediately relaxed, the stress is removed. Parama śānti, supreme bliss, supreme peace. So, when Nārada saw that ashram, the small cave, Nārada was very happy. Nārada saw this ashram. That mountain, that river, and that forest were beautiful. And Nārada liked that, and he stayed there, and in his heart, great love awakened towards the Lord of Lakṣmī, the God Viṣṇu. That time, suddenly Nārada remembered. Once, Dakṣa, the Prajāpati, gave a curse to Nārada, that Nārada would not be able to stay anywhere in one place. Always, he would be moving. Not demon, not demon. Dakṣa, Prajāpati. There are some people who are never happy anywhere. Changing one house to another house. One flat to another flat, one town to another town, one country to another country, just arriving somewhere and thinking already about another place. That's called Nārada vṛtti, Nārada vṛtti. So Dakṣa gave the curse to Nārada that you will not stay anywhere in one place. And why did Dakṣa do this? That we had last year, a long, long talk and story on this. You remember that name. But the ashram was so beautiful. Very divine. That Nārada's vṛttis settled there. Stopped, and he got samādhi. Now he is going nowhere. How nice to have some time to rest. Now he is meditating. Post-meditant and happy, but somehow his condition became more tamas. Munigati de ki suresh derana, Kamahi boli ki na sanmana. Sahit sahay jahu mam hetu, Chale unhar sihiya jalchar ketu. Devarāja Indra, king of devas, king of the heaven. When he saw that Nārada was sitting in one place, meditating, now he is gaining power. Nārada was afraid. Devarāja was afraid. Indra was afraid. You know, when some kind of competition or concurrence is growing, then one is getting nervous. As much you have, that much you are afraid. One politician has all the time his feelings and eyes on the other party's leaders. They don't concentrate on work for the whole country; they are concentrating on the opposition party. In nature also, in the monkeys, when the male monkey is growing, the other monkeys are already getting nervous. Nervous, or an elephant, or the lions. Everywhere, when you see that something is getting stronger than you, then you are afraid to lose your position. When one shop is open and another one opens beside it, the other one is inwardly angry. That's a sign of ignorance, a sign of attachment, greediness, and selfishness. That should not be, but when you go on to have high position and power, then automatically you have these qualities. You know, in your country, nearly every day there is something coming in the newspapers against some spiritual groups. It's called that sect and this sect. Why? Because your church has a big fear now. They are not protecting the people; they are protecting their positions. So all fighting is for the position. You know, they are not able to lead people in spirituality. And they don't let others lead. So when you read such a thing in the newspaper, then you should not judge. All you should know. This is a complex complex, and fear of the religious leaders to lose their position. And that's again: Yoga makes human healthy, happy, spiritual, divine, and liberated. All religions are coming out of yoga. Yoga is the father of all religions, because first was the yoga: prayer, meditation, belief, God, love, humbleness, kindness, spirituality. These all are the principles of yoga. No, any religion is so old on this planet as yoga. The oldest religion is Hinduism. Even yoga was before that. So when you practice yoga, you practice universal religion. And yoga says, "Love, respect, all." Help and guide. That's it. And when you have fear, it means you are already going to lose. It is, the fear is the symbol of your destruction, because fear is there where you feel guilty. Now, Indra was full of fear. And when one is in fear and one knows one is going to lose, then they are using some kind of weapons, indirectly. The most powerful weapons are females and money. Sorry to say, ladies. So they have the weapons: sex, money, and manipulation. Which exist all the time, everywhere. Now, what is happening? So when Indra saw this, that Nārada is getting stronger, Indra called Kāmadeva, the lord of passion. Indra was always very unfriendly and strict, and like this to the Kāmadeva. Deva means the principles, not some different god. In you, you have devas. Your passion is your Kāmadeva. So as many qualities you have, so many goddesses are in your body. As many negative qualities, that much rākṣasa you have in the body. But if you need something from someone, then you are very polite. If you don't need something from someone, ...and someone telephones you. What do you want? Why? Why do you phone? Okay, tell me, what can I do? And if you need something... ...then he says, "How are you? I know. So long, time I didn't hear from you." Selfishness. That's speaking our selfishness. That means you need something. So you can ask, "What can I do for you, please?" That's life. So Indra is calling Kāmadeva. My friend, come, please, sit beside me and have a drink. You always escape, you always go away. Finally, I had time today, and I thought we should sit together. We are good friends. So Indra welcomed Kāmadeva nicely and said, "My friend, you know we are always good friends together." ...but somehow I am your king. And I think you also want to live in peace and exist. So it's not only in my favour, but it is in your favour too. ... Can you do something for me? Kāmadeva, I need your help today. And in order to help me... ...you have to take all your helpers with you. Come, they said. Lord, serve Thine whole height. What can I do for you, Your Highness? It will be done. Now, Indra said, you see, in the mortal world down there, Nārada is sitting in deep meditation. He is free from all desires. He masters everything. And you know, if he is successful in his meditation further, then he will get my place. So go and make some vikṣepas in his meditation. Desires. Any time when you have some thoughts against your sādhanā, or you don't like to practice, or you have some other vṛttis, that means this is an attack from outside. So whenever you have any thoughts that you don't want to do your sādhanā, or something comes against your sādhanā, these thoughts are an attack from outside. One of the tapas, Ādibodhika, Ādidevika and Ādiātmika. Three tapas: ādibodhika, ādidevika, and ādiātmika. Therefore, at the right time, awake again and analyze your feelings. Why are you thinking like this? Why don't you like to do your sādhanā? Kāmadeva, he was happy to get some duty. Kāmadeva has his flag also, like every country has its flag. An emblem on the flag of Kāmadeva is a fish. The fish is tricky, gentle, quick, beautiful. Riba je vrla, prevrtljiva, ljepa. Nārada said, "Take all your helpers with you." Take all the helpers with you. Indra said, "Vidh magadala zase segitulet." To disturb the samādhi of Nārada. Artificial compliments. Helpers are a good smell. As a good taste. As a good sound, call a good sound, a good air, a good air, create the atmosphere. You know, now you get many agarbattis, incenses. Now, there are some incenses packed three in one: one for creating a nice atmosphere, which awakens your many feelings; one for sleeping and relaxing; and one for meditation. So I tested these Agarbattis, and all were the same. So I spoke with one Indian who was selling, going shop to shop in Vienna. He said, "Swamiji, that's a business." In the West, psychology is very active. It's psychological. All are the same Agarbattīs. Psychologically, they are put in three plastic things. The smell is the same, the content is the same. And especially those people who are searching for such things, they are very psychic-influenciable. And especially the home country of psychology is Austria, the father of psychology. I think Mr. Freud, no? Austria has given birth to many personalities, world-famous personalities. Like Mozart, Freud, and many, many others. That's why I am residing there. Kāmadeva went with all his helpers. In the mind of Indra was this fear that Devarṣi Nārada will take over my Amarāvatī, my residence, and my kingdom. Devṛṣi Nārada aitverṣī ozün amravālimat, ozün reṣidenciāyamat eṣ kirayshāgamat. Tulsīdāsa said, "Je kāmī lolup jagmahi, kuṭil kāg iva sabhī derahī." Those who are in this world like cheaters and greedy, they are tricky like a crow bird. And afraid of everything. You know, the crow is a very afraid bird. And the crow is a very tricky one. In the birds, the most tricky is the crow. In the animals, the fox. And in humans, I will not tell. Because there is someone sitting, they will be angry. But it was that time, not now. Called the barbar. The barbarians are the best spies. All information comes quickly to them. They get all the information quickly, but my barber is very nice. My barber doesn't give anyone any further information. And I am very careful, I don't give all information. So who is greedy, tricky, and a cheater? That person has fear, and that was Indra. Sukhād le bhāg sat, swān nirakhī mṛgarāj, sinile jānī jān jad, timi surpati hī na lāj, Sīyāvar Rām Chandra kī jai, Pavan suta Hanumān. Tulsidas said, "A stupid dog is never happy when he sees a tiger or a lion, and he takes the dry bones and runs away and thinks, 'I have taken the bone away from the lion.'" And thinking, "That stupid dog, this dry bone—I hope the lion will not steal it from me or take it away." The lion is not running behind a dry bone. He can get his food any time. But like that, Indra is thinking. Likewise, Indra was thinking, "I hope that Nārada will not take away my kingdom." What a shame for Indra! Māyā, Vasanta, Nirmayau, Kushmita, Bibida, Bitapa, Bahuranga, Bhujahi, Kokila, Gunjahi, Branga. Kāmadeva arrived in that ashram. And through the māyā of Kāmadeva, suddenly there was created a springtime. Many different kinds of trees, many different kinds of blossoms, flowers, smelling, everything became nice. Birds, beautiful birds singing, and many honey bees are humming there, and a beautiful atmosphere. It was a wonderful, beautiful atmosphere. Chali suhavani trividh vayari kam krasanu badhavani hari rambadikasura nari nabina sakala achas asmasara kalaprabhina. Three kinds of different air were blowing there, which awaken the passion. Cool, gentle, and full of fragments. And with Kāmadeva came the heavenly dancers, the girls. They were excellently trained experts and tried to bring Nārada out of his samādhi. To try to awaken Nārada from his samādhi. So first Kāmadeva created the atmosphere, then that kind of air. But still, Nārada, that air was so nice, Nārada had more beautiful meditation. But now the heavenly dancer's girls are coming, and what are they doing? And now the dancers are coming. What are they going to do? They are going to dance the dance of the dance of... the dance. They begin to dance. Many rāgās, they begin to sing. Rāgās are against the vairāgās. Vairāgya. So what do you want? Rāgāt or Vairāgāt? Rāgā also means attachment. Rāgā means also music, what you call the resonance, sound. So they began to create the rāgas. And they took the ball in their hands and began to play and run here and there in front of Nārada. And they took the ball, and they started to play, and to run, and to run,... and to run, trying to create many, many tricks, māyā jāl, many, many tricks. Kāmadeva did many tricks, but still nothing influenced Nārada. Then the sinner Kāmadeva... Sinner. He was very afraid. Because if Kāmadeva will not be successful, then Kāmadeva will be destroyed. And he knows that is, whose protector is God, the Lord of Lakṣmī, the Lakṣmīpati. Who can be the greater protector than Him? He knows that the one who defends Lakṣmī's Lord, Lakṣmīpati, he is the greatest protector. How can one cross the borders where the Lord is the protector? Tamo kde Gospod zastitnik. Hogyan lehetne átjutni azokon a határokon, amelyeket az Úr őriz? Then Kāmadeva, together with all his team, was very afraid. He accepted that he was the loser, and with humbleness he went and fell at the lotus feet of the Muni Nārada. He held the fast lotus feet of Nārada. Did you catch the lotus feet of the people? I caught the lotus feet of the people. Nāradajī knew that it was Kāmadeva, but still he was not angry. Narada didn't act in an angry way. He spoke sweet words to Kāmadeva. With nice words. Dear Kāmadeva, be careful. Sweet, but knife inside. It is said, if someone dies from sugar, why do you give him poison? Sugar is more easily available, you know. Sugar is more easily available, and no one will doubt that you gave the poison; you gave the sugar. So even to the enemy, don't be angry. Otherwise, you get cursed. Nārada said to Kāmadeva, now, be careful. And you know you have nothing to do here. You can go back. Be happy and relaxed. Kāmadeva bowed down to Nārada, and Kāmadeva went away. Nārādhā said, Nārādhā said,... Nārādhā said,... Nārādhā. And how cruel and tricky I was, and everyone was surprised what Kāmadeva was talking about. But Kāmadeva said, "How great is Nārada," and I bow down to God, Hari. But Kāmadeva said, "How great is Nārada, and I bow down to God, Hari." When Kāmadeva went away, Nārada said to himself, "I am the winner." Even Kāmadeva had to go away. And this kind of thinking created a great, mighty ego in Nārada. He should have said, "Thank you, Lord, that you protect me." No, he said, "I did." Did it. I am the winner. And where there is the "I", there is the ego. And that becomes destructive. He went immediately to Lord Śiva, Nārada. I must tell Śiva. How great I am. When Śiva saw Nārada, Śiva smiled. When Śiva looked at Nārada, he laughed. And Śiva is giving now some lesson to Nārada. And Śiva can also teach Nārada. I, Lord Śiva, said, "I request you." Again and again, I warn you, I request you, for the sake of your well-being. The story which you are telling me, do not tell to Viṣṇu. Don't make this mistake. Some Lord Śiva said, "Even there, some talk comes when you go to Viṣṇu, and something like this talk or subject begins. You shall try to hide it. Don't speak." Ṛṣi Yājñavalkya said,... Though Shiva warned and asked Nārada not to talk further. Nārada didn't like this. Nārada may have thought that and was jealous of Śiva. Maybe he doesn't like that I am the winner. This kind of ill thought creates one after another when the ego comes. I can do it. I am the winner. I am independent. I know how to do it. I don't need anybody. I don't need anyone's help. I don't need a master anymore. I did it. I am the successful one. I don't need anyone's help. Now, listen to me, what kind of theater or what kind of game he is going to play. But that's haricca, God's will. We didn't want that things would happen to Nārada like this. But Haricca. Now what's going to happen, what divine play will take place, is very interesting. Hardly can we wait for that, but unfortunately, it's time for lunch, and I wish you a good appetite. Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya
