Learn to endure Ramayana

A discourse on the prophecy of Nārada Muni regarding the destiny of Pārvatī.

"People will always think that she has no qualities. She will have little glory, he thinks. And also, she will be separated from her parents."

"Though the destiny is not changeable, but still, I have some suggestion that can change, maybe, or help us."

Swami Maheśvarānanda narrates the story from the Śiva Purāṇa where the sage Nārada predicts Pārvatī's future, describing a husband who is a yogi with seemingly unpleasant qualities, hinting it is Lord Śiva. Her parents are distressed by the prophecy, which leads to a discussion on destiny, worldly versus spiritual expectations from parents, and the nature of true devotion. Pārvatī, however, accepts the words and awakens her devotion to Śiva, resolving to perform tapasyā. The speaker uses analogies, including a story about a man bargaining for a coconut, to illustrate the difficulty and uncertainty of achieving one's spiritual goals.

Sage Nārada begins to predict the future of Pārvatī. He told her parents that she is a very fortunate one. Everything is very good, but there are a few things which are not good. People will always think that she has no qualities. She will have little glory, he thinks. And also, she will be separated from her parents. She will be without any doubts and carelessness. She has some lines in her palm; her palm shows something, that she is going to marry a person like a yogi, with many long hairs, a selfless heart. Selfless means not that the self is not inside—not like that. It is with the self. Sometimes people think, how can a heart be without self? If it is selfless, then is it without? The self here means selfishness or selflessness? It does not care for himself, but is here for all, not only for a particular person. It also can be that he will be only naked; it means half-dressed, not completely, like F. Kaka, which they are imitating. The Shiva that's called the Naga Baba culture, so they took it in modern life again, the system well, like that. If he's dressed, then he will be such a dress that children and all will be frightened. So when the Shiva will appear, often people and children... There will be fright, such as when she will get like this. She has a line on her palm, so you should also control your hand palms, okay? What kind of lines? I have only M. That's why Mahāprabhujī or Maheśvarānanda. Anyhow, parents are listening carefully. And you know what every parent wishes for their children? A beautiful partner, a happy, harmonious, and pleasant life, a good social position. That's what mostly all parents wish. And when something comes between, the parents are not happy. Those who have worldly consciousness wish for worldly things. And those who have the spiritual consciousness wish for spiritual things. That's why when the children go to meditate or practice yoga and spirituality, many parents are unhappy. If they go to the kushangas and drugs and criminality and this, it doesn't matter. There, they do not complain about anything. Many times, also the people themselves asked many times, "People, do you want to get married?" He said, "Oh God, no, Swamiji." I said, "Why not?" No, how can you ask me such things? My aim in life is Gurudev. Different. And as soon as some partner was blinking, those words which were given to Gurudev were dissolved. And very soon, he was standing there with a little baby, you know. With little toys, because there is no spiritual consciousness. There is a more worldly consciousness. And through this, the world is continuing. You can have children, but spiritual consciousness. And also, children should be spiritually educated. But what you wish for them, the same thing. Again, you put them in the same circle of rebirth and death. So the parents were listening, and they were not little, they were not so happy, but they did not know who is going to be that one. At one point, he said a very great point, "Radha, you are a great fortunate one. What kind of tapasyā, sādhanā have you done, that the liberator and the lord of all three worlds always follows your instructions? Obeys you, so which tapasyā viśādhana that Pārvatī have?" Still, parents don't know what he's going to make her. They don't know. Hardly one remembers her parents, but she's always on the holy throne. Well, Śiva is, as the great Nārada's words, when they heard. They took it in their heart as a great truth, and husband and wife, the king of the Himalaya and queen, they felt very big pain in their heart. They were very unhappy, but Pārvatī was smiling. She was happy. She knew what was going on, but... How should the parents know? Even Nārada still did not know what's going to happen. He predicted, but still he didn't check everything. Sometimes you have to check up, because when everyone's external conscious is equal, when one is more... Extroverted in the worldly things, then you should know that still, that inner feeling and inner consciousness is different. So people do not understand the spiritual consciousness. Always we are running outside, and what we couldn't reach, we would like that our children will reach. But in our dreams, we would like that our children fulfill that dream. Often we force the children for certain things. A doctor wishes that his child will be a doctor. An engineer wishes that his child will be an engineer, and the farmer wishes their child will be a farmer and will be a better one. So we are projecting our expectations onto them, and we try to guide their life in that direction accordingly. To our imagination, but 99% of things go wrong because we do not give them freedom, the children, to choose what they would like to do. Though we will tell them, "Okay, do what you like to do," but still inside we wish that they do this and this. The master always has his expectations also, that his disciples... Get self-realization, though his expectation is like that, but 99% all goes wrong. Why? Because they did not understand. All her girlfriends of Pārvatī, who is known as the princess of the Himalayas, were still so unhappy about what Nārada had predicted. All were, how to say, shaken in their body. And everyone had tears in their eyes. So beautiful, a girl, and such a destiny she has. Because we know that the words of the Deva-ṛṣi Nārada cannot be a lie. His words are not unreality, but Pārvatī, she took his words as the reality in her heart. She took them in her heart and was waiting until those days would come when his fulfillment would come. As soon as she took the words of Nārada in her heart, the whole inner condition changed. For her, again, the direction was clear; direction was shown to her. She knew that she was rejected; she was separated. But now, some hope is there. How the tapasyā, the sādhanā of the previous life comes back. Everything is there. You need to touch or open one page, and everything comes out. As Pārvatī took these words into her heart, the words of reality. Suddenly, in her heart, the devotion awoke towards Lord Śiva. In such a way, the devotion appeared that you can't describe, and when that kind of devotion appears, then you feel deep peace and satisfaction, śānti and santoṣa. It's an indescribable feeling. Suddenly, you know where you belong, and you know the reality, what now reality is. Therefore, in her heart, the devotion to Lord Śiva awakened. At the same time, that young girl begins to think, "Maybe it is my expectations, but meeting with him again will be hard, or maybe impossible. Where and how and who?" These are the fruits which are very high up, to catch them. It is not possible. There was one greedy man, and he wanted to buy a coconut because he promised God Śiva that, "If my things will be good, I will offer you one coconut." He made a saṅkalpa, "Lord, if this and this will be realized, then I will offer a coconut." So all things went right, correct? Now he said, "Well, I promised Shiva to offer the coconut." So he went to the market to buy a coconut, and he asked for the coconut. "What would cost 50 crowns? Why today so expensive? I heard coconuts were very cheap." He said, "Yes, it was. There was a time when a coconut cost only five crowns." At the time of the Red Brigades, it is terrible. Do you think it will become cheaper? The merchant says, "Sailman said, 'I think so, because our economy is falling down, and things will also become cheaper.'" Then I shall wait, because I didn't promise Shiva when I will give him a coconut. So I can wait, he can wait. After ten days, he went again. "What cost, please, one coconut?" "20 crowns." "Still so expensive." I think I have to pray to Shiva that the economy falls completely down. You think it will be cheaper? He said yes. This year there was a lot of harvest of the coconuts, and it is so much coconuts in the stores that hardly anyone buys them. Good. I will come after 10 days. After 10 days, he came again and asked, "What? Coconut cost three crowns?" "Still three." "It's impossible. You said no one buys. If there's only one person, by my three crowns, should be only one." The merchant says, "Yes, we have coconuts which cost nothing, and you can have that." "Yes, please." Tell me, why you didn't tell me on the first day? See, why to wait 25 days? Tell me, where is coconut free to get free? There, one waterway, about 200 meters deep and about 10 meters wide, then 10 by 10 meters wide, there's one coconut tree growing. And hanging there just over the water well, there is a beautiful ripe coconut hanging, and it belongs to no one. If you want, you can go and take it. He went there, he saw the coconut. He looked to the water, a very deep well. There are no stairs, no tree. It is not so strong, but how to get the coconut? And coconut is not easy to break. It's not like your cherries that you just touch and they come in hand. So he climbed on the tree and tried to break it. With the hand, the nut he couldn't break, and the tree was moving, flexible. Somehow he lost the balance, holding the coconut and hanging, and the tree is hanging like this. So he tried with his legs to reach. The tree must have a little pressure; the tree is hanging more down. He looked down to the water well, 200 meters deep, and somewhere on the stone, Shiva's army is there, cobras. Now, that man says to Shiva, "I promise you, I will bring you this coconut, but only if you save my life. If I die and fall down, Lord, it is your mistake, not my mistake. Don't blame me that I didn't offer you the nut." Well, Shiva is merciful, and he helped him so he could take the nut and come back again. So you never know how to get that fruit, where it is, or how difficult it is. So Parvatī is thinking, "I know that the words of Nārada are truth." And she knew the time was not good. If I express my feelings, then all the people in my family, they will try to do the opposite. Sometimes you should not tell your things to someone. In last week, we spoke also sometimes, many, many lives you have to wait to say one sentence. If you tell someone, you don't know what you have missed. If you trust, you think you trust someone, and you tell these things, it will be completely... Opposite, therefore, the wise one said, "Wait and see. The time will bring. If you speak, maybe you will lose everything." She was praying day and night, "Lord, Lord, how to meet you? Lord, do something, please, now. Help me. Only God can help." Nārada Muni said to the king, "O king, what is written on your forehead as your destiny, no one can remove that." It is written, it is your destiny, and it will come like that. Neither goddess, nor the dāna, nor the humans, nor the nāga or any munis can remove what is written in the book of your destiny, and that book is your forehead. Your luck or bad luck. Only one can remove this. In this bhajan, they have written that Mahāprabhujī can remove what destiny has written. Who follows the Guru Vakya and does this technique, what they say, then destiny can be changed. For example, outside of this door, your enemy is waiting. And the master tells you, "Go through this door, the other door." You will be in security. So you go through the other door, and you are saved. The enemy is still waiting and waiting. Some will tell you, you are already somewhere else. So, like this, the destiny will wait. Gurudev will give you liberation already. There is no one whom they can catch anymore. So destiny, what is written in our kismat, it is not easy to remove. Therefore, the ṛṣi says, "No one can meet this." Remove. But, you know, there is always a "but." I told you before already. It is not. The destiny is still also not 100% fixed. There could be one way, but. Confidentially, I thought of it. Tad pi ek mein kahun upaahi Hoi kare jo de un sahai Jas varu mein barne un tum paahi Mili hi um hi tab sansay naahi. But still, I can tell you or show you one technique, one way. Though destiny cannot be removed, I can still tell you there is some way. If God helps in that, it can be successful. What? What can be successful? Tell me, what change? Which destiny? That's it. You didn't listen, you didn't follow me. That's it, my dear. You couldn't follow me. Though the destiny is not changeable, but still, I have some suggestion that can change, maybe, or help us. For what? For what? Where is the foreign thing? No, no... Yes, it is. Life will be successful. But in which connection is he talking? To whom is Nārada telling? For what? For what? What do they want to change? Now you got it. You see, that's it. When the Master is talking, you are just flowing in the river of the emotion, you know. And you are not aware of the bank of the river, left and right. So follow, follow, follow. That means it doesn't go into your consciousness, what I am telling. You are only on the upper level of your consciousness. You just enjoy the story, but you don't use the vivekā. It is something inside. It is not only the Rāmāyaṇa tale. But it is life philosophy. It has to do something with you. All of you, and therefore you should listen carefully. The receiver said, Nārada said, "I know there is nothing changeable, but still there could be some help." If some Deva, some Goddess will help us. Definitely, Umā will get such a partner; there is no doubt in it, which I have explained to you. But let's try something. Yes, she must get such a husband; it's her destiny. ...but those unpleasant things which I told, the qualities of that person, the future husband... My experiences tell me, if I remember correctly, these qualities all belong to Shiva. Shiva has these qualities. Maybe somebody else too, many could be. In my opinion, if Pārvatī is married to Śiva, then all things will be good. Because, though it is unpleasant things from him, people will not consider them as unpleasant things. But as a pleasantness, first, who dare to say to Śiva that you are looking ugly? If they said like this, Śiva opens her eye, that burns. It is not there anymore. Second, even if it is unpleasant for our eyes, we think, but it is divine. Therefore, my... My suggestion would be this: if Pārvatī gets union with Śiva. Jo ahi sejasayan harikarahi budhkasutinakardosunadharahi bhanukrishanusarvaraskahi tinakamandakahatakonai. You know, King, even the God Vishnu is all the time lying, resting on the Sheshanāga. But no one tells him that he's lazy, that he's not active. You try to always remain in your bed all the time, don't work. You will see what happens. All friends and partners will say, "You are a lazy one, and what happened to you? Go to psychiatric treatment," and this and that. Though the fire and the sun take all the juice away from the vegetation, no one says they are bad. It dries away everything, because it is the greater. Similarly, the qualities of Śiva, no matter how he's living, what he's doing, or how he's dressing, are all divine. In the river Ganges, dirty and clean, both kinds of water are flowing. Though all kinds of canalization go to the Ganges, no one says the Ganga is an impure river. Bhagavān said it is not a holy river. It is holy and pure. Gangājī is like a fire and like the sun. Samratakona dosa gusai Tulsīdāsa said, "The mighty one, whatever he is doing, is not wrong." Doing, but he's still not the doer. He's above these karmas, but we think differently. But Śiva is Śiva. And if the ignorant one, a foolish person, out of his knowledge, out of the proudness of his small knowledge, tries to imitate them, he will fall into the naraka, the hell. How can one individual soul try to compare himself or herself with the great God? Lord is ever free, and whatever he is doing is beautiful. Therefore, do not imitate, just do what he is saying. So we shall try somehow that Pārvatī Jī comes to Śiva. Ganges, Sureshari, Jal, Krita, Baru, Nijana Kabhun, Sant, Karhi, Tehi, Pana Sureshari, Mileso, Pavan, Jaisi Hisa, Anis, Hi, Antaru, Taisi. If one makes the alcohol out of the Ganga's water, the saint will never accept this, but if that again comes into the Gaṅgā, then it will be like the Gaṅgā. So take the water out of the Gaṅgā, and you mix alcohol inside. Now you cannot say it is the holy Gaṅgā. But if you put this again into the Gaṅgā, then it will be again pure Gaṅgā. It means that is the difference between individual and cosmic one. Though the individual comes from the cosmic one, the individual has collected certain qualities now. Qualities now, and these qualities you cannot compare with the cosmic one, supreme. But when the individual consciousness will merge again into the cosmic consciousness, then he will lose these qualities, the worldly qualities, and becomes one with the cosmic again. Lord Shiva is a mighty one, he is capable, he is God. Bhagavān, if Pārvatī comes to him, then in every aspect it is the best, but still it is not so easy to make the sādhanās to make Śiva happy and accepting. But if you really try very hard, then he can't see you suffering. He will say very soon, okay. Therefore, Pārvatī, go and make tapasyā, awake your devotion more and more. Don't care about hot and cold, hunger and thirst, comfort and discomfort, name or fame. Just stick to your aim and concentrate on that. You will be successful, but if you are few... Days making tapasyā, and then you want to have holidays, some days go somewhere comfortably, and then after, when you like, you come again back. That kind of devotion the Lord does not accept. That's artificial love, that is love, surface love. Therefore, endure. Try to learn to endure.
