Gurudev Fulfills Positive Sankalpas Of Bhaktas

A spiritual discourse on the power of faith, practice, and satsang.

"Gurudev always fulfills the positive saṅkalpas of the devotees. But it is very important that you do not stop halfway."

"One minute of satsaṅg is greater than 60,000 years of tapas and sādhanā. But the satsaṅg must be from the heart."

A Swami addresses a gathering, weaving teachings on perseverance and the value of human life with illustrative stories. He recounts a childhood miracle of Mahāprabhujī and a lengthy parable about satsang's supreme value featuring Guru Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra. The core message emphasizes consistent spiritual practice (sādhanā), overcoming negative qualities like laziness, and attending satsang with an open, devoted heart.

Mahāprabhujī gives everything, and everything will be successfully accomplished. The source is from Him. If you remember and read in the Līlā Amṛt, there are many such miraculous stories. For example, when Mahāprabhujī was very young, he was tending cows. Sometimes the cows would eat a farmer's entire crop. The farmers would come to Mahāprabhujī and say, "Your cows have eaten all our crops. What will we do?" Mahāprabhujī would ask them, "How much do you estimate you would have harvested if the cows had not eaten it?" The farmer might say, "Fifty tons, one hundred tons." Mahāprabhujī would reply, "You will harvest five tons more than your estimate. If it is less, you can take from my house, from my family." And it happened that they harvested more than five tons beyond their estimate. There are many such stories. It is said: man proposes and God disposes. A man dreams, but God decides. A man thinks, but God leads. Gurudev always fulfills the positive saṅkalpas of the devotees. But it is very important that you do not stop halfway. There are difficulties; these are the different tasks and exams in life through which we must pass. If you change your feelings, your thinking, and your actions, then it is gone. You lose something very important. The problem is this: when we have something, we cannot estimate its value. We do not take it seriously, and we change something within ourselves. When that change is gone, you wake up and say, "How beautiful it was, how nice it was," but it is gone. This can apply to a project, your business, some work, relationships, or your spiritual sādhanā. We must learn in life to value what we have. If you lose those values afterward, it is a great pity. Similarly, we should know the value of human life. Every life has great value; even the life of a tree has great value. Every creature is valuable, but human life has a special, different value. This kind of body is very rare; it is a very powerful tool given to you. With the help of this tool, you can attain realization. Do not ignore or neglect it. Such a life will not come again for many, many lifetimes. God has given the most powerful tools through this human body: intellect (buddhi), discernment (viveka), willpower, and the talents to understand and practice. You remember that at the end of November and beginning of December last year, I told you something here in Sri Lanka. I said that from that day onward, we would all start practicing every day: āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, mantras, and saṅgha prakṣālana. You all promised, so I do not want to ask you to raise your hands, but you know what you have done and what you have not done. The greatest enemy of a human being is laziness. Indolence is very pleasant, very sweet, and when laziness attacks you, your resolve is gone. Laziness, anger, jealousy, greed, and attachment are the negative qualities, unfortunately, which are also dormant in our consciousness. A beautiful rose plant has beautiful blossoms, but also thorns. Similarly, this beautiful human body has very valuable qualities, but alongside them are also some negative qualities. We must overcome these qualities. It is not easy. It is easy to speak and nice to hear, but difficult to master. We say in India: A disciple asks the Gurudev, "Gurudev, you are doing sādhanā." The Gurudev says, "Yes, but my inner self knows how hard it is." Those who are fighting with this know it is not easy. But they are the happiest and will have fewer problems if they master or overcome these negative qualities. First is laziness. Second is anger. When you awaken a lazy crocodile or a lazy snake, it becomes very aggressive. So when you are lazy, all your qualities—good and bad—are sleeping. If someone tells you to get up and do something, then the cobra of anger awakens. Then come jealousy, hatred, and greed. These are all our enemies. Those who have surrendered… there is a beautiful bhajan by Rājma Prabhujī that was sung when I came in: "Sajan thane māfīre, maja karnā, maja karnā, Satguru Sāhib kā saranā, sajan thane māfīre, maja karnā." Mahāprabhujī said, "Oh my dear, now you are free. Enjoy. Enjoy your life because you have surrendered all to Gurudev." But it is not easy to surrender. We surrender for a while, and then not anymore. Surrender is surrender forever. Those who have surrendered forever are happy forever. Those who surrender only intellectually, with tricky thoughts, are suffering now. They know very well how much they are suffering because they changed things. You give, and then you take it back again. You do not wait to be given back. You will be given back by the Lord, by Gurudev. Therefore, Gurujī said, "All our projects will definitely be successfully finished only through Mahāprabhujī's mercy." Have confidence. Where there is confidence, there is faith, and everything comes. For us, sādhanā is very important. Many things are changing, and they will change. Our life is changing every second, every minute. The body is working, and every minute something is changing. We are getting older every day, every minute. Some people fast, try to lose kilos, color their hair, put paste on their face, and then smile in the mirror at their own stupidity. "Oh, I look young." You are smiling at your own stupidity. Do not look; you are not young. This is only temporary, the outer side, not reality. But it is good as long as you believe—at least as long as you look in the mirror, you are young until the next time. This means we do not accept reality. We should go with nature. It is okay if you do not like grey hair; make it black. There are many people who want to make their hair white, or brown, or fair, or blonde. But really, you cannot hide it. After ten or fifteen days, or even in one week, you can see the black layer. The original color comes out, and then it looks uglier. But it is a kind of satisfaction. If you are not satisfied with anything, then at least you are satisfied with coloring your hair and body. This is a play with the body. But for how long? You do not go with nature. In your thinking, nature is constantly influencing us. We are moving with nature, and we will become old. Those days are waiting for us. But what have you realized from this life? Therefore, Guru Nānak Sāhib said: "Teri bītī umar hari nāma binā, smaraṇa karale mere mana." When you become old, you will realize, "My life has passed without the name of God." Well, it is still never too late. Whatever you can do, take it. You remember that story: two or three boys went into a cave and wanted to go back. One boy wanted to take some stones or sand from there. Although he was warned not to take anything, he took something at the last minute, thinking, "It doesn't matter what will happen." When they came out, the cave disappeared. He opened his fist, and it was a diamond. These diamonds signify the name of God, your mantra. So whatever you can take, take it. While running, you can take it; it will be yours. Where you are does not matter. You do not need any special sādhanā or material things for that. Sitting in a car, train, or airplane, working at a computer—let your mind go to the name of Gurudev, to the mantra. That is the richness of your life. Every mantra that passes through your consciousness will be counted. Now in some countries, or almost every country, there is a toll on the road. They have a kind of credit card system with a special lane; you drive through, and a machine registers your card, opens the barrier, and you pass. As many times as you pass, money is automatically deducted from your account. Similarly, how many times you repeat your mantra will be counted for you—with a mālā or without, it does not matter. The name of God should pass consciously through your consciousness. Sumeran means to repeat and remember God's name. That is very important. And what you have, keep it. Do not change. Do your sādhanā, do your sādhanā, do your sādhanā. That is yoga. We are all very far on the yoga path. When people admire you—not me, but you—they admire you all. That is how strong you are. "Though Swamiji is so angry, still you are here." I also admire that I am still with you. Anyone who sees you, who comes, who knows something about spirituality and yoga, admires you. But I can tell you, only through talking will you not get liberation, nor by merely listening to satsaṅg. You must listen with the value of understanding. Then nothing is comparable to satsaṅg. You remember I told you a story last year about Guru Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra? Yes, and about Śeṣa Nāga. This was the last story told by Gurujī on the occasion of Guru Pūrṇimā, about how great satsaṅg is. At the time of the Rāmāyaṇa, nearly 10,000 years ago, two great saints lived. One was Guru Vasiṣṭha Muni, the family Guru of Lord Rāma. At the same time lived a great saint named Viśvāmitra. Viśvāmitra was a great tapasvī, doing sādhanā, achieving many siddhis, and practicing a lot. But Viśvāmitra wanted one title: Brahma-ṛṣi, a sage who is a knower of Brahman. This title could only be given by Guru Vasiṣṭha Muni, but Vasiṣṭha never addressed Viśvāmitra as a brahmarṣi. Though Viśvāmitra had advanced so far in yoga sādhanā, he still had much anger within him. He killed the son of a cowherd and stole a cow that always gave milk. Yet, Vasiṣṭha Muni did not get angry. One day, on a full moon day, there was a satsaṅg. They invited Vasiṣṭha Muni to give the satsaṅg. After the satsaṅg, he announced he would return to his hut around midnight. Viśvāmitra learned of this and prepared a bow and arrow to kill Vasiṣṭha. Viśvāmitra hid in a bush. When Guru Vasiṣṭha and his wife Arundhatī came near, Arundhatī spoke to the Ṛṣi: "Look how beautiful the moonlight is. It is so pleasant, so harmonious, a beautiful light." Vasiṣṭha Muni said to his wife, "Yes, dear one, this moonlight is so beautiful, so pleasant, and so divine, like the light of Brahmā, Ṛṣi Viśvāmitra." When Viśvāmitra heard those words, he threw away his bow and came out. He approached Vasiṣṭha Muni, who said, "Oh welcome, Brahma Ṛṣi, how are you?" Viśvāmitra said, "That is all I wanted to hear from your mouth. I apologize. I killed your children, I stole your cows, and still you are so gracious. You are not angry. What can I give you? I have nothing to give, but I donate to you the fruits of my 16,000 years of sādhanā and tapasyā—all the fruits of my 60,000 years, I offer to you." Guru Vasiṣṭha Muni said, "I give you just the fruits of one minute of satsaṅg in return for your donation of 60,000 years of work." Therefore, I am happy, and I give you the fruits of one minute of satsaṅg. Viśvāmitra became angry again. "This is injustice. I give you 60,000 years, and you give me one minute of satsaṅg?" Vasiṣṭha said yes, because 60,000 years is not equal to one minute of satsaṅg. Viśvāmitra said, "That is not right. Let us go to God." They went to Viṣṇu, who sent them to Śiva. Śiva said, "Only Śeṣa Nāga can judge this." Śeṣa Nāga is believed to be a thousand-headed snake upon whose head the earth rests. If he moves, an earthquake occurs, so he must always remain still, holding the earth. Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha went to Śeṣa Nāga. With folded hands, they said, "Our adoration to you. Please give us judgment." Śeṣa Nāga said, "What can I give you? I have the burden of the whole planet. The weight of the whole planet is on my head. If you take it for some time, I will give you judgment." Guru Vasiṣṭha and Ṛṣi Viśvāmitra said, "We give you 60,000 years of our hard sādhanā tapasyā. Earth, please remain without the support of Śeṣa Nāga." But the earth did not remain without support. Then Guru Vasiṣṭha said, "Mother Earth, Pṛthvī, I give just the fruit of one minute of satsaṅg. Let Śeṣa Nāga come out for a while." The earth raised up a little and remained without movement. Śeṣa Nāga was massaging his neck, doing Sarabhītāsana. Viśvāmitra said, "Tell us quickly, before the earth falls on us." Śeṣa Nāga said, "What should I say to you? The judgment is already there. Do you not see? The earth is without any support." So, Guru Vasiṣṭha was the winner, and Ṛṣi Viśvāmitra was the loser. This means that one minute of satsaṅg is greater than 60,000 years of tapas and sādhanā. But the satsaṅg must be from the heart. Śeṣa means in mathematics, after all minus and plus, whatever remains is called śeṣa (the remainder). So when we count everything in this world, finally what remains is the Truth, that Satya. This earth, this body, is supported only by Satya. When Satya disappears from this world, then Pṛthvī will again go into the earth or into the water. Therefore, Satya Meva Jayate—truth alone triumphs. So, with such a Satya decision, Satya feeling, and with that Satya heart, you should go to satsaṅg. Not only to drink tea and gossip, search for friends, criticize someone, joke, be angry with someone, or talk as if the speaker does not know what he is talking about. Why are you thinking like this? If you know better, then next time you should talk. You will be most nervous and sweating. Satsaṅg is different. There is only love, only wisdom, only devotion. In satsaṅg, you should go like an empty pot, so you can receive more. If you go like a full pot, whatever we try to put in will spill out. An empty pot means a clear heart—without doubts, without complexes, without anger. Then your sādhanā will be fruitful. That is it. So, do your sādhanā and attend satsaṅg. That will be the best.
