River of love and consciousness

An evening satsang on spiritual discipline, detachment, and the path to divine love.

"The key to success is self-discipline. Discipline is lost, everything is lost."

"Your sādhanā is your God. That sādhanā will lead you to God, nothing else."

A spiritual teacher addresses a gathering, emphasizing the necessity of unwavering discipline (sādhanā) and supreme detachment (vairāgya) for self-realization. He recounts the rigorous life of his Gurujī to illustrate perfect dedication and shares a parable about a saint tested by a prince to explain overcoming ego. The core message is that purifying oneself from attachments and negative qualities through constant practice is the only way to merge into the "river of love" and attain cosmic consciousness.

Dear Bhaktas of Śrī Mahāprabhujī, spiritual seekers, it is a great happiness to see you all. It is a divine blessing of Śrī Mahāprabhujī and Gurujī that we could be here together this evening. Today was a great day. Today is one of the best constellations, that God is very gracious to us, and we could be in this divine atmosphere, in this divine consciousness, in the river of the love which will lead us to the ocean of immortality. Every consciousness which enters into this river will definitely merge into the cosmic consciousness. The human life is given to know God, to know thyself. Love and protect all the creatures on this planet. Be a helper, be a protector, not a destructor. The human consciousness is so far that it has abilities. Human consciousness is something so developed that it has the ability to reach the cosmic consciousness. But due to these all-worldly temptations, due to this all-worldly stress and all the differences, humans are confused. They have lost the direction, lost the direction to that river, that river which flows towards God. Whoever enters into that river will become the river. And that river which will enter into the ocean will become the ocean. That is the truth. Therefore, the purpose of human life is to find the center and the divine presence of Gurudeva and to remove all the obstacles which come on the path; otherwise, there is no chance. So there are different attitudes, different ways of the bhaktas to get realization. Those are karma yoga, bhakti, rāja, jñāna yoga, mantra, kriyās, and haṭha. But what is needed? Two things. A strong saṅkalpa, a decision. The saṅkalpa, the decision of the practitioner, should be like that. It is said even the mighty Himalaya may sink, but my decision will not sink. The moon and sun may change their direction, but my direction I will not change. That is the decision, and then second is love. If you have no love for your sādhanā, you cannot reach. Patañjali said in the Patañjali Yog Sūtra, the practitioner should have a devotion to their practice like devotion to God. As long as you have not realized God, your practice is your God. Because without this, you can't realize. So those who neglect their sādhanā—meaning not practicing mantra, not practicing meditation, not practicing prayers—this means they have lost the way. Therefore, it is very important that we practice discipline. The key to success is self-discipline. Discipline is lost, everything is lost. So, discipline is a rāja yoga, where there is no discipline, there is no success. Where we are coming together and having a world peace conference, which is dedicated to our beloved holy Gurujī, to pay respect to him and what that means. I remember, and Gurujī also wrote in Līlāmṛt, when Gurujī made Mahāprabhujī, and after some time, then he had a sannyās dīkṣā. Sannyās dīkṣā is a new birth. It means that you are not attached at all to your family. You have a new birth. A sannyāsī never goes back home. When you become a sannyāsī, then you go only once to take alms from your mother, from that house, then you can go to any house, anywhere, but not to that house. Because to become a sannyāsī means to be completely detached. Because sannyāsa dīkṣā is the highest dīkṣā, the highest initiation. If you don't follow this, then you will fall deeper than before, down. And this you promise yourself in the Agnidev, the Sākṣī of the Agnidev, in the witness of the fire, that I will renounce everything. And it means that the entire world is my family. All are my brothers and sisters. Elderly people are all like my own mother and father. So when I accept all as my brothers and sisters, mother and father, then how can I go back to that home where I was born and say, "These are my parents, and I belong there, and I must be with them?" If you do this, you will fail, and for that you need vairāgya, detachment. You know, blood is thicker than water. So the blood relation is more attached to you. To get free from this is not easy. Many have tried, and many have failed. Why couldn't all get self-realization? Because they felt they couldn't come through. Therefore, it is said, clear, no? The path of love is very different. The path of love is very different. This house is a house of love, not theater players. You are not playing theatre here. Either there is love or there is theatre. And theater is only for a little time, that's all. And after that, you go home. So, Prem is that love for God. Only heroes can surrender; that is the dedication. But those who are very weak in the heart have the doubts: "Should I go in or not? Should I do or not? Yes, I will do it." And then you go inside the door, and you say, "No, I want to have half leg outside and half leg inside." Then you fall through. Many tried. Vairāgya, detachment. It's divine. You are detest, but you are attest. Always, Gurujī used to say, "Toro or Jodo," break and unite. Toro means break your attachment. And unite in love. That's it. That's called universal love. That's called cosmic love. That love is God, and God is love. You have to understand that love. When we talk about love, we understand it completely differently. So, try to begin the test. But you cannot. Still, you have so much anger in you, so much offense. There are many people sitting here; they say, "I am a yoga practitioner, I am a yoga teacher, I am a yoga organizer," and if someone one day says, "You are stupid," oh my God. Then you will know how this yoga teacher is acting. What did you clean within you? Nothing. There was a very great saint, and he had many supernatural powers, but he was not utilizing or demonstrating anything. Only if you see him, everything is okay. If he touches you, oh, it was something like divine light going in when he leaves that time. There were fewer humans on earth, and there was a lot of jungle and forest. And wildlife was living free. And nature and humans were living in harmony. So there was a prince who heard about that Swamījī. And there was a prince who heard about Swamijī, how great he is, so he wanted to have a darśan of him. He searched for him in the forest, so he took his horse and went to search for him. And what was that saint doing? He was cleaning some thorny bushes from the main road way till his hut, which was two kilometers distance. Hot sun, 40-45 temperature, and he was working alone. There were no disciples, no one. And he was working alone. There were no disciples, no one. And the prince was riding on the horse. And he saw that a man was cutting the bushes and grass and cleaning the thorns. So he thought, "I ask him where Swamiji is living." So he asked him, "Do you know where Swamiji is?" He did not answer anything. Again he asked, "Can you tell me where this way will lead you, me? Somewhere, he must be better. I asked him, 'Where is Swamiji living?'" He didn't answer. So he had a chappuk in his hand, and he gave three or four chappuk and went away on the way. Then, after two kilometers, he reached the hut where Swamijī was living. And there was one disciple, sitting and preparing lunch. And when the prince arrived at that hut, a grass hut, it is small, and he asked, "Is this the hut of that Swamiji?" He said, "Yes, sir. Can I have his darśan? Can I meet him? I came a long way here." He said, "I'm sorry, but he's not here now." "Where is he?" "He's cleaning the path." "Which path?" "This path, just where you can, we must have met him. It's about five, six hundred meters far from here." "How is he dressed?" "Nothing, he has just one lungi, that's all, and one towel." Now he was in a dilemma. I hope it was not that one, and meanwhile, the Swāmījī came. And he told the disciple, "Why didn't you give him something to drink? Sit down and give him a glass of water." And the prince said, "Sir, excuse me." He said, "For what?" "For my stupidity." He said, "No, no, you did good. You know, when we buy some pot for cooking, made out of clay, then we test like this, if it is complete or broken. If it is broken, then it is not this sound. It has this sound. Broken. So you tested me. So you know if I am broken or I am complete. My son, that's all right. You did it out of ignorance," so he greeted him. And he had a satsaṅg. The same thing is said in the Testament. If someone gives you a slap on the left cheek, then offer the right cheek. And Croatia is now an anti-Catholic country, followed by Jesus' words. Are you able to do this? If not, then you fell down at the first level. You can't follow this or that. That's it. So ego is so strong. Jealousy is so strong. You are so easily offended. So offended that you don't want to speak anymore. There are many sitting; I don't want to tell the name. Because I am sitting far, the emergency door is out. So, the first level is iron your ego, the second iron your jealousy, the third your greediness, and the fourth your inner feeling of offending, otherwise you cannot have Vairāgya. And without vairāgya, you can't come forward. You are attached. You are attached like rubber. You know, when you expand the rubber to make some weapon, you know, a shooting stone. As much as you stretch, it has more power inside. And that's it. Attachment has destroyed entire humanity. Attachment to the money, attachment to the body. Attachment to your feelings, you are not able to give. And if someone looks, you are angry, you are unhappy. So you can't become a sannyāsī. And without becoming a sannyāsī, you cannot have that test. So let's hope. It's very hard for me to tell you now because many will be disappointed again. Perhaps those who have had such qualities in them, kāma, krodha, mada, lobha, moha, ahaṅkāra, translate what are these? I know all of it very well, by heart. Because they have, then still uncertain, my dear. It is said a blind hand also finds corn sometimes. And that's what I didn't want to tell you. I didn't want to tell you, but I should tell, and I told it. But we are on the right track. We are on the right river. So it will come. So when Gurujī got sannyās dīkṣā, Gurujī asked Mahāprabhujī, "Lord, what can I do for you, and what is now my dharma?" Mahāprabhujī said, "Love each and every entity. If not more, then at least that much, as much as you love thyself. And serve all creatures and humanity, work for peace, so that this suffering human finds within themselves the peace, as you received God, the peace." Then Gurujī went to preach. Where to find peace? And how did Gurujī find the peace? Abhama Guru Caraṇa Sukhāpāya Sāgarle Samādhi. Sukha cannot be translated into English, so I don't know in your language. Sukha means everything is pleasure. Everything is in happiness. When that happiness enters into your heart, then this calm, crowded mother love will not fight with you. When the Gurujī became a sannyāsī in his young age, 17, 18 years, he traveled through India. At that time, technology was still not so far advanced. There were no roads, no cars, no trucks, no buses, and very rarely a car somewhere. And when somehow some jeep or some car came, there was like, people were running to see how a vehicle can move without horses or oxen. Sandy roads, thorny bushes, either with the camel carts or ox carts. Walking on foot, distances of the village are 30 kilometers, 40 kilometers, 20 kilometers. And Gurujī was carrying the books of Mahāprabhujī on his shoulder or on his head. And coming to the village, nobody knows him. But he stayed there in the temples and gave the satsaṅgs. Those who once heard Vālī Gurujī's satsaṅg did not want to miss it anymore. Such a natural voice Gurujī had, a powerful voice. Very clear sentences with the wisdom in the poetic language he was talking. And he could compose the bhajans within five minutes. The songs that we are singing, and what about us? We sang this bhajan a hundred times, but still we don't remember. Even we don't know by heart. That's different. He could compose the bhajans, and when Gurujī was singing bhajans, we have some tapes when he was singing with his guru brothers and sisters in satsaṅg with his tānpurā. It was so nice. Automatically, vairāgya was there, and Gurujī's voice was so strong that he didn't need this instrument like me. Gurujī's voice would be so strong that he wouldn't need this instrument, the microphone. When we sing beside him, our voice is like a broken flute. So, the Gurujī inspired millions of people. He traveled throughout all of India. And one thing more, it doesn't matter how tired he was, that's what I want to tell you, he never missed his sādhanā: two and a half hours morning and three hours evening he was doing his mālā, and one and a half hour noon. I was lucky enough to meet Gurujī in my early age. I had the opportunity to sleep in the same room. It was difficult to sleep because I was tired, and I wanted to sleep. I said, "Are you sleeping?" "Yes. Okay, but give me the first glass of water." So, whenever I woke up, whenever I saw Gurujī, he had his mālā all the time in hand. Even when he lay down and was practicing mālā, and of course, he had also this five-element body, a natural body, and the body had to go through all conditions like a normal body, so in the case when Gurujī slept for half an hour, I saw that the mālā was continuing, or the mālā fell out of his hand, that in deep sleep he was searching for the Mālā. And sometimes, only without the Mālā, the fingers were moving. That's called a discipline. That's called love. That's called practice. Such a soul is one with God. And he was a very clear-minded person, straightforward. And Holy Guru led a very simple life. He had only his water pot, his walking stick, his mala, and one shawl and shoes, and go, that's all. So the disciple who was with him had to take something, this and this and that. Gurujī held numerous conferences, satsaṅgs. At least you can say not only 365 satsaṅgs a year, but you can say 900 satsaṅgs a year. In all major states of India, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and so on, Rajasthan, UP, and everywhere. And brought the message of peace. And Gurujī was also mentioning in his satsaṅg very often Mahātmā Gandhi. And Gurujī was also sometimes near Gandhijī. Because once Gandhiji invited Mahāprabhujī to the Aḥmadābād ashram. And Gandhījī welcomed Mahāprabhujī and asked him, "Gurudev, how will we achieve independence?" And Mahāprabhujī wrote beautiful bhajans, composed and sang them, which you have in Līlāmṛta. And that's why I give the name of the conference. And the message of Mahatma Gandhi. Because Gurujī also admires Gandhijī's abilities and knowledge. Always, Gurujī said that your inner will power will achieve the things. Your decision and that Gandhiji had: Gandhiji had only one stick in his hand and one lungi, but he achieved everything. Therefore, whether you speak about Gandhījī or you speak about Gurujī or other thousands of saints, they came through their prayers, mantras, and discipline. That we should develop. You have that power within you. You have that ability to get realization. You will get it, but you have to iron your ego, my dear. If someone tells you a little sentence, you begin to cry. And then you fall to Swamiji. "This person said to me, 'This and this,' I don't want any more working." I said, "Darling, don't cry, it will be okay." What have you achieved through your yoga practices? So many years you are doing yoga, and so many years you are practising a mantra, and so many years you have such a strict master, not me, but someone else. I am not strict, I am very gentle. Therefore, look within thyself. What is within you? What is in you? Your truth, only two know. Nobody else, even now. One is yourself, and second is here also. And that's God. God knows, or you know. And when these two know, everyone knows. Therefore, work to become humble. Learn from the trees when the strong wind comes. The branch bends. That tree will survive. Which will not bend, it will be broken. Therefore, surrender ego. Surrender all these qualities. The whole world is my family. The whole world is my house. Sky is my roof. Ground is my bed. To whom should I be attached, and to whom should I be angry? All are mine. Therefore Mahāprabhujī said in bhajan, "Satguru satsaṅgī ārī, olu āve, olu āve sa nena, barjāve, olu sa nena, satguru satsaṅgī ārī, olu āve sa nena, barjāve, olu āve sa nena, barjāve,..." Olu āve. How happy I am when I see them. I am longing for them. And I am longing so much that my eyes are full of tears. When will I see them again? So all who got blessing from Swamiji, even they have mantra or no mantra. They are your guru brothers and sisters. That's called unity. That will build the spiritual strength, spiritual power. And that will make you strong, so it will be easier for you to go on your yoga path. So this is the time where we think on our beloved Holy Gurujī. And this conference, you should be a very lucky one, a happy one. You are blessed one, and your country is a blessed country. That divine grace of Mahāprabhujī, Mahāprabhujī decided this anniversary of Gurujī to celebrate here. Don't wait for anyone. Work for it. Don't say, "She is the organizer, and he is the organizer. They don't ask me, so why should I do it?" No. There is only one organizer. Mahāprabhujī. He organizes everything. If he will not organize, you will be stuck. Even he organizes our food. He organizes our breath. If he wouldn't do it, you wouldn't be able to breathe. God is organizing everything. Therefore, don't blame the organizer. Don't say, "I don't like them, I don't like them." No, no, no. You don't like thyself. This is the problem. Therefore, we all should be one. And we should offer the flower of our dedication and devotion to Holy Gurujī. Thanks to Holy Gurujī that we are here today. It is his blessing that I am here, or it is his blessing that I could talk in front of you. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to say anything, so it is his speaking, not I am speaking. Therefore, we have to follow this principle, and that's very, very important. So it is for you, very personal for you; it's not for anybody else. Therefore, it depends on you how far you are and what kind of progress you have made. Look within thyself. How many qualities exist in you. So first iron all away. Kāma, krodha, mada, lobha, moha, and ahaṅkāras. If you are free from these qualities, you are already self-realized. And if this quality is existing in you, then you are not self-realized. You are the same person, still suffering. Therefore, sādhanā, sādhanā, sādhanā. Your strength is in your sādhanā. Love your sādhanā like you love God. Your sādhanā is your God. That sādhanā will lead you to God, nothing else. And therefore, it doesn't matter what you do. Karma yoga. Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said, "Yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam." Through the karma yoga. You will be perfect in your yoga path. And yoga agni, karma dagdani, through the fire of yoga, you can destroy your seeds of karma. But you have to practice that. Without practicing, nothing will happen.
