Mantras for khatu pranam

Mantra is a spiritual science with tangible power for healing and transformation. Specific mantras exist for countless life functions, from neutralizing poisons to daily activities. This power requires purity; qualities like ego or greed extinguish it like a flame. The knowledge is a sacred trust, often lost if not passed to a disciplined successor. Faith is the conduit, as seen when a lost cat returns or a child's pain ceases after a mantra. These events are not performed by the individual but through divine grace when one becomes a clear channel. Ancient practices, like an Ayurvedic healer praying to a plant for its healing parts, acknowledge this conscious connection. True power arises from surrendering personal will to a higher reality. The practice culminates in universal prayers for peace in all realms—physical, mental, and throughout the entire cosmos.

"Every time you repeat the mantra, you call him; he is in your consciousness."

"May peace be in the governor of this planet... May this peace of the Brahman be everywhere."

You all know about the five steps of the mantra. Many diseases or problems can be healed through mantra. To say it another way, some people are healing through the power of the mantra. With the mantra, they can heal a disease. There is one thing: when a scorpion stings you, when a scorpion pricks you, it is more painful than a snake bite. There are still people who can, through a mantra, take away your pain. It means you no longer feel any poison or pain inside. We still have some scorpions and some snakes in India, in Jādana Āśram also. In the village of Skorpion, we also have scorpions and snakes. If someone is bitten by a scorpion, they immediately go to that village, and there are a few people there who immediately heal the wound. They do not open the mantra. What kind of mantra is it? They do not tell. They give it only to some faithful persons. Even a father does not give it to his son if he finds the son is not disciplined and not correct. They do not take anything from you—no money, nothing. They say that if they take anything from you, then they will lose this power. Of course, you can call them at home, and they will come immediately. But they will not even drink tea from you. If you force them, they will say, "Okay, you can give me tea, but next time when I come, not today." For this purpose also, there are some people who can help you if a snake bites you. So there are many things which one can do through particular mantras. There is a mantra for scorpion poison, mantras for snake poison, and there are many mantras for different things: a cooking mantra, an eating mantra, a washing mantra, a sleeping mantra, waking up mantras, general mantras, personal mantras, bīja mantras. This you should know. At least, as a practitioner of yoga and as a yoga teacher, there are mantras for scorpion-stinging, exhalation, sleeping, waking up, cooking—a lot of things. You need to know these things exist if you want to be a teacher in yoga every day of your life. There are many different mantras for very different life situations and functions: a mantra against scorpion, against snake, for bathing, for sleeping, for waking up, a personal mantra. If you have any qualities like ego, greediness, showing off, or pride, then you will not have siddhi. This mantra will not function. And when you have already attained siddhi with this mantra, and you get ego or greediness, it will disappear. If you have this special ability, but your ego is growing again, then the power of the mantra will be gone. It will disappear like a blow of a flame, and the flame is extinguished. So now these people became more greedy, and more ego came out. More jealousy came out. The competitions came out. It is a great pity that this science or this knowledge disappears with the death of a person. The person is not able to give it further to someone. It is a great shame that such knowledge often disappears when a person dies because he had no one to leave it with. Similarly, it is in spiritual sādhanā, in yoga sādhanā. Therefore, our living should be simple and pure in nature. You can help yourself also, not only others. So mantra is a spiritual science, and these holy persons, spiritual persons, their world is a blessing, and that blessing is a healing. It helps. It does. Now, how it functions is indescribable. Recently, someone lost a cat. This cat was a friend of a lady who was taking care of it because the friend went on holiday. She kept on phoning to reach me because the cat was lost, didn’t know where it was, already for a few days. Her friend is very attached to this cat, and when she comes back, she will be very sad. "Please, Swāmījī, find the cat and bring it back." When that person got me on the phone, then for half an hour she didn’t stop talking, many, many things... She said, "Only tell Swāmījī the cat is lost, and please bring it back. That’s only what I want to say." So, someone, Monica, told me the message, and I told her, "Don’t worry, it will come back." My next call—because she was calling every half hour—when she called the next time, Monica told her. After eighteen hours, she called back, and Monica said, again, the same person. And Monika said to Swāmījī, "Thank you very, very much, the cat came back home." So this is the confidence of the person, the faith of the person. How it functioned, how it came. So many times when the cat is ill or the cat has diarrhea, people call me. Or the dog is nervous. This is really not a joke. This is not a joke. This is not a joke. You will read a story in Līlā Amṛt. There is an Indian doctor in Vienna, an eye doctor. His daughter was about six or seven years old. She had a very terrible pain in her ear. The doctor said it must be operated on, so they called me to ask what to do. The child is crying. It’s such strong pain. I told her to put her phone where the pain is. Everything will be fine. Her name is Pūrṇimā. I said, it will be okay. She was born on Guru Pūrṇimā. I said, "I will say some mantra, it will be okay." I said, "Oṁ Prabhu Dīp Nirañjan Śabad Bhañjan," five times. After that, she gave the telephone to her parents, and she slept. The next day she was 80% okay. The doctor was surprised. Now even I don’t know how it functioned. Only Mahāprabhujī knows. Only Mahāprabhujī knows, because he gave them. And that’s it. So when you speak on His name and you give everything in His hands, then it happens. And if you think that you are doing it, then it will not help. We should become a channel of His love, a channel of his blessing, a channel of his light. Like this bhajan: "Guru Dev, I am in your shelter, please remove my worries." There is one story about a great saint, Tulsīdāsjī, who wrote the holy Rāmāyaṇa. Tulsīdāsjī was going somewhere. He passed by a village, and some people were crying inside. There was a lady. She saw Tulsīdās and came and greeted him. Tulsīdāsjī blessed her, "My daughter, I bless you with a son. You will get one son." She was surprised. She said, "Master, I am now in a dilemma. How will your holy words come true? My husband died, and that’s why we are crying. They are carrying my husband to the funeral. You know that we don’t marry again. Now, how will I realize that I will have a son?" So Tulsīdāsjī, without saying any word, hurried towards the crematorium. They were very ready to light the fire to burn the dead body. Tulsīdāsjī said, "Stop, stop, a moment." Tulsīdāsjī said, "My lord, I don’t know anything. But in your name, I bless him." Tulsīdāsjī put his hand on the head of that dead body, and the man woke up. He had died a few hours before. Medical science says that after seconds or minutes, the brain is finished. But how does the brain begin to function again? How can this brain start functioning again? It is beyond our imagination, beyond our explanation, and beyond our capacities. So this is spiritual science. You cannot explain, but it is, and that’s the power of the mantras. So there are many, many stories like this. You know, in Līlā Amṛt, Devpurījī, Mahāprabhujī, the miracles. You know, I was living with Gurujī from a very early age. I was sleeping in his room. I saw when Gurujī was lying, sleeping, out of his blanket was like light, like inside of him some bulb is burning. I did not know what that was, so I asked Gurujī. Why was the light coming out of your blanket? I asked him, "Why are you wearing a light blanket?" Gurujī said, "Because it is very dark, you can find a way to the door. It is a dim light, so that you find the way out when you go out into the dark." We were in Nepal with Gurujī. Our group from the West European group was going with me. Once we went with a group from the West to Nepal with Holy Gurujī, and we stayed in one hotel. We were staying in a hotel; it was called the Crystal Hotel. My room and Gurujī’s room were on the top floor. Our room was on the last floor, and the elevator didn’t work. So, I said, "Okay, I have a key." Gurujī’s room key was in my room. I don’t remember what it was exactly. I hurried up, ran up to get that key or something. I was young. I could run the staircase. I think it was three floors or four floors. Yes, I had to bring something. I opened Gurujī’s door, and He was sitting and meditating inside. I thought the lift was functioning, and Gurujī came quicker than me. But the lift was still down, and they were repairing it. Only one staircase, and definitely he didn’t overtake me. So I asked him, "How did you come in? The door was locked." I asked him, "How did you get in? You must have been locked up." And Gurujī said, "It is so." So, I also told the people. We cannot understand. It’s very hard to understand Gurujī, very hard to understand the holy persons. Our weakness is this, that we think these holy persons are living normally like we are doing and living. It is not easy to understand saints, how they live, what they live for. We think they live an ordinary life like we do. I never saw anyone in my life such a disciplined person for his sādhanā, and it doesn’t matter where he was or how ill he was, he was practicing his mantra all the time. I have never seen a man in my life who practiced his mantra and lived such a life. I have never seen anyone in my life who had more discipline with the sādhanā. Wherever he was, every day he meditated with the mantra. He was very weak in the last days of his life. The doctor said he is in a coma; I said he is in samādhi. But his right hand fingers were constantly moving, like he was practicing his mantra, though there was no mālā in the hand. It means all the time it was Mahāprabhujī in his consciousness. So each time when you repeat your mantra, it means you are calling him. Every time you repeat the mantra, you call him; he is in your consciousness. As much as you are angry at someone, that person is in you. If you don’t like someone and you are jealous, and you can’t sleep because you are so jealous, it means this person is in your consciousness. You are more aware of him or her than aware of God. If you think of the enemy, then the enemy is in your mind. So, to realize God, first you must have God in your consciousness. Develop that kind of consciousness, that He is in your consciousness. And so, like that, you will be successful, or you will come closer. Often, people tell you, or you read in some books, I have heard from many people about Āyurvedic treatment. You can often read about Āyurveda. The practitioner of Āyurveda should be a very spiritual person, a disciplined one. Those who practice Āyurveda should be very disciplined and spiritual. They never give ready-made medicine. They prepare it on the spot for every individual. Or if they don’t have this kind of material, they will tell you, they will give it to you tomorrow. If you don’t have all the necessary ingredients, I’ll tell you to come back tomorrow. Unfortunately, a lot of medicinal plants have disappeared. Many things, these pesticides have killed many good and healthy plants. Pesticides have destroyed many species of plants, or destroyed by humans. And everything is manipulated with gene technology. So the Āyurveda doctor we call Vaidya. Vaidya means a knower, a knowledgeable one, and he will go to the forest, see the right herb, repeat a mantra, and beg from this plant some parts of it for the sake of that ill person: "May I take some leaves of you, or some flowers, or some parts of root, or a bark of the tree? Please give me for the sake of another ill person." He prays to the plant, asking it to give a piece from its body, a few leaves, so that he may heal that man. "Please, for the healing of that person, give your leaf, a part of your bark, a part of your root, or a flower." Now, if you go to some tree and say, "Please, can I have one fruit?" people will say, "There is possibly something wrong in the brain." If nowadays you go to a fruit tree and start begging it to give you a fruit, they will think about you that you have gone mad. Because now people have lost this consciousness and confidence, or faith. People have lost their consciousness and their faith. They became greedy, and everything was commercialized. They became corrupt, and everything was commercialized. So that remedy, which Vaidya freshly prepared with his hands, worked as a miracle. What Vaidyā prepared with his own hands works immediately, helps immediately. Take a medicine, what you call homeopathy. For example, homeopathy. In homeopathy, there is no quantity. It is just some water, so there is a very, very small essence of something. But there is a vibration, that resonance. Resonance. For me, the homeopathic medicine must be a blessing of some divine one. Because there is nothing inside. There are some little tablets with sugar. And you just hold it for half a minute and put it back in the bottle. You are holding only half a minute or ten seconds; that’s enough. Only holding, touching, it affects your body. Or a little bit more, then it will have an effect. So there was a time, it was very in, or very famous; it came, parapsychology. At one time, parapsychology was very popular. Parapsychology is also beyond our imagination. It functions. It’s a mental power. It is some mantra, some siddhis. Some people brought it with them, and some developed it. It is a mental power. There were many times on television, coming from some person, I don’t know the name or from where, but he was just making like this, and his spoon was bending. There was a man who only did this on TV, and the spoon was bent. Or a thick iron rod. Or he would have bent a thick iron wire. I don’t know. So there is the science. There is something. There was one person I met just one and a half months before. This person was very, very ill, and the doctor said he will not live more than 15 days. So he came home very sad and begins to write a testament, and this and that. And then he says, "But why should I die? I don’t want to die. I will not take medicine." He developed such a strong willpower. "I will only eat healthy and the juice from the plants." And already this person is, after that judgment of the physician gave him, still living healthy for 18 years. Two years ago, Chidananda told me about an African who was paralyzed and was going with the wheelchair, but one day he said, "No, I will get up, I will go," and he was three times winner of the Olympic medals, gold medals. I heard the story that there was a man in Africa, who had his whole body bent down, won the Olympic Games three times. He lived in Ethiopia; he was paralyzed in his knees. One day he said, "I don’t want to live in my knees anymore." And became a two-time Olympic marathon winner. If we use our great mental strength, our willpower, we will not necessarily win the Olympic Games, but we can do a lot of things. Therefore, in ancient times, the ṛṣis from India were sure; they made an experiment and they created some mantras. But always, you have to take the support of some forces. "I will do it, but I need your help." So we have this mantra, first for Kaṭhupraṇām: "Oṁ Śrī Gurū Dīpāya Namaḥ." We salute to Mahāprabhujī. So it means now he is sitting in front of us when we practice. Kaṭhupraṇām is the first mantra of Rāvaṇasu; he sits here in front of us when we practice it. Or, salutation to the cosmic light. Mahāprabhujī means cosmic light. Mahāprabhujī, that means cosmic light. "Lead us from unreality to reality." Now, are you only chanting, or do you really wish to do? Do you know what is unreality and what is reality? Do you know what is reality and what is non-reality? Not that you love that man, and please, Lord, lead me to that reality: that I love him, not this man. God will say, "That is not reality." So this reality is higher aims. That satya which I spoke yesterday at the same time. After all, multiplying and what you call the minus and plus, what remains is a zero, and that zero is the truth. When you get all the mathematical work in the universe, what remains in the end is a pure zero, and that zero is reality. So that reality, "Brahma Satya Jagat Mithyā," that should be in your consciousness. That meant this, and that will help you to come to that realization. "And this relationship leads us from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge." And leads us from the darkness of the unconscious to the light of the light. To realize that param satya, to achieve the supreme truth, and to lead us from this mortality where I am suffering birth and death, and this and that trouble, and these problems, leads to immortality. And immortality is that param satya, everlasting. "And serve Samaṣvastir Bhavatu." Everywhere should be good health. Here, health means not only your health and your family’s health or human health, but the entire planet should be healthy. "Sarve saṃ," everywhere. This is not only about your health, your family’s health, your humanity, but everything that exists. "And Sarve Samaḥ, Śāntiḥ, Irvāva." If there is quarrelling, if there is a disease, if there is an epidemic, there is no peace, no śānti. When there is health and harmony, there is peace. If there is a fight, there is no peace. But if there is harmony, there is peace. "And serve some 'Mangalam Bhavatu,' the harmony." There should be no quarreling, no fighting. Harmony. "And serve some pūrṇa bhavatu." Everywhere, everyone should realize completeness. Let all live. Let all achieve their aims. Let everyone live. Let everyone achieve their goal. Support them everywhere. Pūrṇa is in the nature also. We disbalance the nature; there is no pūrṇa remaining. The whole world, all who are on this planet, should be happy without any difficulties. Also, you can say the entire universe should be in harmony. Let there be peace and harmony in all the worlds, in the whole universe. And then put it together more concretely in mantras. "Oṁ Dhyo Śānti." Be the peace in the entire universe. Very precisely, they accepted these mantras. Let there be peace in the whole universe. To strengthen it even more with the mantra, the next mantra is: "Let there be peace in the whole universe." "Om antarikṣam śāntiḥ," peace in the atmosphere. If there is no peace in the atmosphere in heaven, we will also be in trouble. So protection is in protection. So don’t pray only for you. Pray for all. When you think, "I should be happy, and I have everything," then what about others? When you think and want to be happy and healthy, what about others? May our planet be in peace. But now the earthquakes are so rapid; there are earthquakes. And we know the result. There is no peace because we have imbalanced the entire biorhythm on this planet. You can think, "How is it stupid that water should be in the peace? What is that?" You don’t know the power of the elements. You know the restlessness in the water and on the planet, the tsunami disaster, for example. That was the restlessness of the water; no peace in that water. All kinds of hurricanes, all kinds of storms, floods, droughts. So, this is new. What is happening and what will happen? So we should pray for that. Humans should understand, and humans can pray. "All the herbs on this planet should have peace and harmony in them." May peace and harmony be in all the plants on this planet. Then nature will maintain itself. And so nature will maintain itself. When you are harvesting, putting seeds in the field, if some other animals eat also, let them eat also. It will remain still for you. You will not stay hungry. But you are not only harvesting something for you and for your family, but you want to sell it and make business out of it. No one will be hungry on this planet if this planet wouldn’t be abused by humans. It is said, "Who gave you the pig will give you the food." The birds. The birds are pigs. A little corn for a little ant, and 100 kilos for the elephant. God has, nature has made everything perfect arrangement. But we destroy all the forests, everything, and you put the elephants in limited jungle forests; of course they will destroy this, because they have to eat. But we have cut down numerous forests and limited the space for elephants, which they destroy quickly when they need food. That is why peace is in the plants. Let there be peace in all the plants, in every vegetation. Small herb plants. "And Vāreśpatet" is all big trees and forest. Because they can also be destroyed. They don’t want strong hurricanes here. The trees are happy when the gentle wind is. They don’t want to lose their branches and break down. "Om Viśva Deva Śānti." Even peace in the whole universal divine powers and elements. May peace be in the governor of this planet, the God of this planet. He should not become angry to finish everything, throw away. Deva means the goddesses. Deva means the goddesses, and be in peace with them. May this peace of the Brahman be everywhere. May the peace of Brahman be everywhere. May there be peace everywhere. Only peace and peace. Be peace in my mind, and my heart within me. May there be peace in all the three levels: the physical, mental, and astral. Peace, peace, peace. May peace, peace, peace be on your physical, mental, and astral level. And this kind of thoughts and feelings you should have in your mind and in your body, this vibration when you practice Kaṭhupraṇām and this mantra. It’s wonderful. These mantras and their peace should be in you while you practice the Kathā praṇām.
