The Light of Life

A spiritual discourse commemorating thirty years of an ashram and the planting of a World Peace Tree.

"Light and life—these two combinations are very important."

"And so the tree of peace stands there, from the source of the eternal light."

Swami Avatarpuri gives a satsang on the auspicious day of Siddip Narayan Bhagavān, reflecting on three decades of the "eternal light" of the ashram in Austria and the planting of a linden tree as a World Peace Tree in Türkenschanzpark. He expounds on Vedic cosmology, the divine energy (Śakti) present in all creation, and the path to self-realization through conscious living, discipline, and mantra. The talk weaves personal anecdotes of the ashram's founding with teachings on the elements, the nature of life, and the protective power of divine consciousness.

Filming locations: Türkenschanzpark, Vienna, Austria.

Today is a special day of Siddip Narayan Bhagavān. It is one of the best constellations this month because we are seeing each other today. It has been said: Gurudeva Darśana Dhano, Chetana Ānanda Dhano. Darśana means encounter. One encounters many things in life, but no encounter can be greater than or can replace the encounter with the Gurudeva. What is very important and beautiful for us is that thirty years of eternal light were kindled in Austria, to establish an āśrama with a saṅkalpa. It started in Schikanedergasse in the fourth district. It is no coincidence, but predestined by the most beautiful constellations and by the most beautiful grace, that something beautiful happens today. Indeed, in the 18th district, in the Türkenschanzpark, we have planted a beautiful linden tree in the park as a World Peace Tree. This park reminds me of many things. For ten years, I walked almost every day in this park. And now this linden tree will symbolically endure my presence, because our life is shorter than the life of a tree. And so the tree of peace stands there, from the source of the eternal light. Light and life—these two combinations are very important. The first thing that began in this universe, as the origin, was sound. And sound is the world, sound is life, and sound is the light of life. Through sound, vibration, throughout the entire universe, in the endless universe, an element came forth: the fire element. Through the fire element comes the air. Through the fire element comes the water element, and finally, the earth. And the Earth is the living planet. Life on this planet is possible only through the five elements. In the ancient scriptures or sacred books, which are called the Vedas—Veda means knowledge—it is stated that there is only one God called Īśvara. Īśvara is only one God, omnipresent, who has no form. The name is just like that; we say Īśvara, or one can say Holy Father, who is formless. Veda means the knowledge of the entire universe. There is nothing in this universe that is not stated in the Vedas. No matter how many millions or billions of dollars, or let’s say euros, are donated for scientific work and space flights, they find nothing other than what is stated in the Veda. It is a question of how, in those times, the so-called Ṛṣis explored the entire universe through meditation and yoga practices. What instruments did they use? Only the human mind and the human intellect. Through discipline, through tapasyā, through devotion, and a clear goal. For all of us, it would also be possible to explore this, but only if we are capable of renouncing everything. We are slaves to our feelings, we are slaves to our mind. And this relationship with our sensory organs will cause us eternal sorrow, that we have squandered or wasted the most beautiful divine life. There are only four nights, only four nights with moonlight, then the nights are dark again. And so, those who have truly understood life and have a clear vision and a clear goal—for them, nothing is then impossible. Everything is possible. And so the Ṛṣis led a disciplined life. Niyama, Niyama. And focused, having a clear goal. Through meditation, and then with the astral body, they traveled through the entire universe. And then they wrote down or dictated what exists in the universe. And so they have written that what exists in the universe exists in this body. And what does not exist in this body does not exist in the universe either. And so, after billions and billions of years of the entire universe, one planet has remained, and this planet is called Earth, the Living Planet. The living planet is called Mṛtyuloka, and Mṛtyuloka means a mortal world. Here it is born and will die. But this planet, the Earth, is also called Karmabhūmi, Karmaloka, Karma—the place of action. And so, the Creator has created 8.4 million different living beings on this planet. All originate from the five elements: space, fire, air, water, and earth. The Vedas say that vegetation also has a life, also has a soul. And we always say, "This tree is dead," or "The tree is still alive." Where does this expression come from? They say the tree is no longer alive, it is dead, it has dried up. So, everything that exists, grows, moves, carries within itself the divine light and it lives. Even stones. Stones also have life. Faceted gemstones speak to us a great deal. Very much so. And every type of stone has a specific energy for us. It doesn't mean anything just for humans, right? Man should not think, "Aha, it is only for us." No, the planet was created for everyone, for the entire planet to live. And that is why we say Mother Earth. And mother means fertile life, offspring. And Mother Earth will never lose the seeds. No matter how many years pass without rain and there is drought, when the rain comes, suddenly the seeds sprout again. And so is life on this planet. And what grows, what moves, has a life. It is even said, one can now say, a car that moves has life. Yes, a car has a great life. A car can give you life and take your life away. In all atoms, in every instrument, in every metal, Śakti is present everywhere within. Śakti means power. Every atom is filled with Śakti. Only we know nothing. And so, when you travel to India or certain other countries, for example, when someone gets into their car, or bus, or truck, or so on, in the morning—first, when he takes his key in hand, before starting the engine, the motor, he prays, he greets. Praying does not have to last for hours, but he says, "Oh divine Mother, please possess me." This is it. Many have an altar, many have the rich incense sticks, which they light and so on. Even the rickshaw driver, even the cyclist. In the morning, when you wake up and take any tool or instrument in your hand, you must first greet the divine Mother, the Śakti. She says your kitchen knife has an incredible amount of power. This knife can save your life or take it away. Your gas stove or electric stove, also your, how do you say, microwave, everything, even your door slam, all contain an incredible amount of energy, power within. And so, when one rises—do you know what it means to rise, to awaken?—your life is nothing in your hands. You cannot take enough care of yourself. There are other forces that possess us and watch over us. There is nothing in your hands that you can fall asleep on. They are the other forces within you. I always think that when tiredness comes, it means my soul is wandering in Mother's body, or the son from the mother. And that is the Śakti, the universal power. And there your soul finds rest. The best protection for you or for us is the lap of the mother. Father as well, please, okay? The father is sitting here. But at the moment, I am not speaking about the father. I am speaking of the power of light. And so sleep comes, and when you think, "I want to sleep now, I want to fall asleep immediately because I have to leave early," and so on, you cannot sleep. Then you roll to the left, then to the right, then scratch here and then scratch there, put your cushions back in place, and then it’s too cold, then too hot, and then the clock is ticking. Nervousness also arises. Those are the disturbing factors present there. The Self. But when the Self surrenders into the hands, the origin, the divine mother—here, Mother, I do not mean anything like feminism, so not these anatomical differences between Father and Mother. Father is also the best Mother. Within Father, this Śakti is also present. And so, we lie down on a beautiful bed, snuggle in, close our eyes, and Hari Om. We are somewhere in the most beautiful realms. And you should pay attention; today you should notice a little, throughout the whole night, when you sleep, the tongue always sucks, just like when you drink mother's milk. Yes? If one believes nothing or does not want to perceive anything, then take a milk bottle into your mouth and you will see. It happens automatically. And this is always the case, no matter how big or old you are, you are always in the divine Mother, in this motherly love. And who watches over us when we sleep deeply? We do not know what might fall on our heads. That, that, that. And even in dreams, things unfold freely. It doesn’t matter; some say it is only our thoughts and our imagination, yes. But our thoughts also have great power. The mind always wanders to where it feels an inner warmth, a connection, a protection, and so much more. A protection in our dream—sometimes we have unpleasant dreams, and then someone suddenly wakes us up. And those who have a mantra, they repeat the mantra in sleep or in a dream and immediately wake up. Because it is the mantra that protects us. And immediately, who awakens us? How do we return from sleep? How do we ascend the steps? The boundaries, that is unconsciousness. When you ascend into sleep awake, aware, and slowly. And you sleep into a dream. And again you fall asleep and wake up. And so, when you wake up, you have no strength to open your eyes. It is a śakti that helps you to open your eyes. And it is the power within your body that helps you to turn over or get up from your bed. And the first time you place your foot on the ground, you should pray very carefully, very consciously: "Mother Earth, please guide my steps safely and in the right direction, and give me strength so that I have a firm ground beneath my feet." And these are earth rays, different kinds of earth rays. Sometimes suddenly you have a feeling, a very negative feeling, perhaps about yourself. Sometimes people, besides depression and sadness and anxiety and disappointments in life and so on, say that life no longer has any meaning and they want to commit suicide. But at the very moment when the person is sitting or standing, and moves 20 meters away, 10 meters away, the thoughts will go away, because at that moment the energy that comes is negative, it is harmful for you. And so, if you have any serious conflicts with your fellow residents, with other people, and it often happens that one says, "Okay, thank you, I’ll go for a little walk," and walks away to a beautiful park or street or window shopping, and everything becomes clear, and you calmly come home and say, "Well okay, let's go to sleep," and that's how it is. So, if you just sit in one place, at home in the same spot, and keep complaining there, and complaining, "I am sad and no one helps me and no one loves me"—how are you supposed to love yourself? You are sitting there in a dark cave. Go somewhere and give so that someone can love you. All living beings love you. You know, your dog loves you very deeply. And your cat. When you come home, that is the greatest love. Your cat jumps around you and your dog. And it says, the dog wants to be the first pussy as your partner. How dear the living beings are. And so everywhere is the mother power Śakti. And therefore Śaktipūjā. Śaktipūjā means living consciously. Living fully consciously. And a sense of purpose. And for us, our goal is self-realization. And we renounce everything. But those who fall into temptation and are weak with their senses, then it is said, it is eternally regrettable that you have thrown away this most beautiful diamond, the most precious diamond of human life, into the dirt and you have lost it. Thus speaks the power. That was the power of the Ṛṣi. Through meditation, through discipline, through sādhana, through mantras, they have given us such precious science or knowledge that humanity will have it forever and ever, as long as this planet lives. And now, after some time, I have discovered my kind of scientific work. And indeed, those people who suffer from depression or lack motivation in life, who are anxious, should study the ancient scriptures. The ancient literatures, such as the Upaniṣads, Vedas, and sacred scriptures. The books that do not create any one-sidedness, but open up a horizon for you through the sacred scriptures. It opens up a very broad, vast horizon for you, means a great, expansive horizon, means a diverse life, possibilities, and freedom. And so please help me to continue our scientific study. If someone has these difficulties, or friends, acquaintances, partners, or children who suffer from depression or anxiety, then they should read it on the damage. Or it is similar with other cultures, with other countries. There is a beautiful culture everywhere. Then suddenly we live beautifully again. It is the thoughts; our thoughts can kill us, and our thoughts can liberate us, save us, and so on. Man always thinks incorrectly. People have slowly, slowly developed negative tendencies. I am sitting here wearing a single-layered garment, orange. And here is a small black dot. Here or here or here. Or my beard is black, green, beautiful beard. You know, to grow such a gray beard, you must work long, long in life. Yes, ask this beard how many hard times and beautiful times it has gone through. Nothing is easier, children, than to get gray hair. It is a hard-earned color. Many experiences, many, many beautiful and challenging experiences. So the beard is nice, but there’s a small piece of spaghetti hanging here. And your eye or both eyes will always be on the spaghetti. And there is someone sitting in front of me, who keeps looking at the spaghetti and finally says to himself. She stands up, comes closer, and says, "Excuse me, I have something here," and takes it away. And so it is. How many centimeters, how many square centimeters is my bathroom? And a tiny thing—why do my feelings always go to the negative point, to the black point? And so it is that one sees more negativity than positivity in the world. But God has created much that is positive, not as much negative as we think. And so the ṛṣis have told us how this planet was created and how the five elements were brought into life or came into existence. And so it is power and energy. Power contains the light within itself. And the light is life or breath. And light and life, energy and consciousness are united. And so a tree, vegetation, is a symbol of life. There are different trees; some stand in one place while others move. And we are mobile trees. We are always moving around on two legs. And there are also the climbing plants that wander. And every tree travels through its seed. And that is why God made this four-year period a season. And now when autumn comes, strong winds also arrive. The wind comes, takes the plants and seeds away, scattering them everywhere, and then the rain comes, bringing new life again in the spring. And so is life. And today was beautiful, this wonderful World Peace Tree that we planted in the Türkenschanzpark. It was a beautiful ceremony. And for the first time, this tree received coconut milk instead of water. We have watered this tree with coconut milk and lit a lamp. So light and nature, life was united, life and nature. And this is precisely our 30 years of the eternal light. But before we founded this Ashram, I wandered for five years. And twice to India, once having gone to India, and then people, the friends, want me to come back. Then I said, when I come back, I will establish an Ashram. And so, that was my saṅkalpa, and now I say, your own fault. And so, through this saṅkalpa, we have rented a space for our āśrama. And for me it was clear, and since Mahāprabhujī's name means Thief, and Thief means the light, the flame. And the flame is an eternal flame, meaning eternal life, and so we have eternal light, a candle lit there. Right at the beginning, we didn’t have any furniture or anything, you know, how did we manage? I went to the wet market evening at 6 p.m., and the people were throwing away the small wooden crates that come with the vegetables and fruits. We took these wooden crates and placed them in the beautiful newspaper. I believe it was a Kurierkrone back then, it was a different newspaper. Or it was Kurierkrone, but it was a different newspaper. And then we placed a beautiful newspaper on the box, and on the newspaper we placed a candle, and then we lit the light. Because then we further envisioned the spatiality and we worked on it, and then there was the muscle soreness during the night. It was very beautiful to build and bring the Ashram, this beautiful atmosphere. And I remember, on the first day, I slept with only a blanket and on the newspaper, on the newspaper, because it was so dusty and we didn’t want to bring in other beds or anything. And it was like that. And we bought rolls at the wet market, and it was the first time I had pizza there, that was it. I must write this in my life experiences. So, 30 years of eternal light were present with these thoughts, the presence of our divine Master Vagwansaridipna and Mahāprabhujī. It means divine light, the light of the entire universe; light is consciousness, and light is light. In light, there is no duality. It can be strong light, less light, green light, red light, blue light, yellow light, white light, but it is light. And so it is unity, one in all, all in one. And it is said, when twelve years of eternal light burn, then this place and the flame grant great psychic power. This means that everyone who sees the light greets it and repeats their Saṅkalpa, a wish. It will come to fulfillment. But fulfill your desire with good thoughts, careful consideration, and so on. Not selfish. Not for your palate’s pleasure and not for your sensory pleasure, but a successful human life. Success does not mean that you have money, nor that you own cars—Mercedes and Porsches and Tata and Trabant and so on. Whoever falls into these is, unfortunately, a lost person. Or not a house and so on, not the jewelry or anything like that. To live successfully means to realize divine consciousness within oneself. May God constantly bring this small light into our hearts, uniting it within ourselves with God. To become one in God, to melt this light into God. Repeat your mantra. Through this, your journey back and forth, neither birth nor death, the coming and going, will be ended forever. And you will be able to live in the most beautiful, most divine consciousness for eternity. And that is the purpose of our existence. That is the true goal. And if you want to have children, then your task is to guide your children onto the spiritual path in the same way. With positive thoughts, a beloved nature, environment, people, and God, and striving to live one’s life accordingly. Waste nothing and destroy nothing, your life, with negative things, with drugs and so on. One always hears the lectures, beautiful lectures, yet still, one remains dependent on alcohol or other types of drugs. That means, most have understood nothing. That means one has not understood life. That means the goal of life is not conscious. And this person is like a piece of iron lying in a honey jar, yet unable to enjoy the honey. And so, today is a beautiful constellation for all of us, that this month once again we have come together here and we have a wonderful weekend seminar ahead of us. I hope that we will receive many motivations, and you have read many biographies of many saints who immediately write about divine consciousness and the divine, but I believe that if you read my biography, you will first cry. Or perhaps you will be sad, or you will say, what is this writing, it is childish. It is nothing childish. From childhood, one comes to the divine deity. And many, many experiences were heard and written down inside. It was not that from one day to the next, everyone sat here before me. It is not that everyone will say, "Oh Master, how are you?" That is it. You cannot even become a janitor on the same day. Or not even a chimney master. There are many kinds of masters. So, a master must work for the disciple. Not that the student is comfortable and so on, but that the karmas of the student become illuminated. Through your words and your experiences. But the master is the one who constantly walks through the flame of fire. The master is the hot iron, the middle hammer, and below, what do you call that piece of iron? Hambos, this is it. And so, the master shapes himself throughout his life, and along with himself, he also shapes his students. With every strike, a spark goes astray. And this spark is the Master himself, who radiates into the disciples. And you should give opportunities to your students, the people, the individuals, and give them the task to do with their hands. And not that I do it, that is my task, and you do not do it. I am here, I am the Master, I do it. I always say in the offering of treasures, let someone sing, let someone speak, give the chance, then you will know how far your student or pupils have come, and then you can correct and understand. And it is like this, often there is friction; many come and many go. And there is a beautiful story from my experience, but I will write that in my biography. And so, in this spirit, I wish you all the best, a wonderful weekend, God’s blessings, and I look forward to seeing you. Sredip Nanbagwa, thank you, goodbye.
