Forgive and do not suffer

A spiritual discourse addressing a seeker's struggle with forgiveness and the nature of suffering.

"My reason tells me to do it, but my heart doesn't allow it. How can I forgive and free myself?"

"A person who cannot forgive, a person who is not flexible, a person who doesn't use vivekā (discrimination)... this kind of person will be suffering all the time."

A teacher responds to a question about an unresolved past hurt, explaining the karmic cycle of non-forgiveness and advising acceptance of destiny. He expands the discussion to the inherent suffering of bodily existence, using the examples of Jesus and an analogy of an abused wife to illustrate attachment to the suffering body, ultimately urging wise use of one's time.

Years ago, one person deeply hurt me. I didn't—I never forgave that. My reason tells me to do it, but my heart doesn't allow it. How can I forgive and free myself? There are two things: the matter of the heart and the matter of the brain. You can ask both. What would they like? One said, "I will forgive." The other said, "No." This is the question. Ask the part of your being who said, "No, I will not forgive." What would you like to do if you don't want to forgive? Do you want to injure the person? Do you want to kill the person? Or do you want to take things away from that person? What do you want to do? Whatever you will do against them, it's again gaining more bad karma. Why did it happen to you, and why did it not happen to your sister or your brother? Because this was in your destiny; accept it. Perhaps you have done this to another person before, in another life. Maybe more hard things or bad things. And this was revenge. If not—if it was not the revenge of some karmas and something fresh happened—then why do you create karma for it? What can you repair by not forgiving? Only one thing: that you are constantly suffering. That's more than what happened. So nothing is terrible; it's a matter of understanding. Of course, it is unpleasant, but be wise and forgive. In India, we used to say: when a dog bites you, you cannot bite the dog back. But you will be careful in the future. That's it. A person who cannot forgive, a person who is not flexible, a person who doesn't use vivekā (discrimination), a person who is changing mood with every situation—this kind of person will be suffering all the time. You can cry the whole day, but you are not forced to cry. You can suffer your whole life by not forgiving, but you are not forced to do this. Just forgive and don't suffer. So, either you go in that direction or this direction; it is suffering. If you act negatively, you will be suffering. If you can't forgive, you are suffering. Therefore, step back. That is your benefit. Every karma, every destiny has a very strong tie on our body, mind, consciousness, or spirit. Even God has to go through it, or a holy person. It was necessary that Jesus had to suffer so much in his whole life. Couldn't he have done without suffering? Was he not capable of doing something against it, or was it exactly like this? Some say there was no Jesus, and all was not crucified like this. There are different stories, but it doesn't matter what it was and what stories were or are. We accept Jesus as Jesus, and he is for us as Jesus. So even the holy person has to suffer. Then who are we? We do not have that quality. But still, be happy that God is so merciful to you that He gives you such a nice life. Life is very peculiar. Life has some waves with happiness and some waves with unhappiness. But don't think that you will be very young for your whole life. Don't think that you will not become ill. And never think that you will not die. We don't know when our number is coming. We are all on the list, so we never know when we are on it. The dharma of the body is to be born, grow, and die. There are three ways to die: accident, old age (organs getting exhausted, illness), or samādhi. When we are searching and we are trying to have the third choice, still, in the body there will be symptoms which you do not accept. Thanks to medicine, the science of medicine, they are very active and very far developed. They are producing spare parts for this body. They have spare parts for the knees, hip joints, and many things. Still, they can't produce the kidneys, liver, and such things, but they can transplant. But sooner or later, one day you have to say goodbye to this body. This body is a house of diseases. This body is a house of suffering. This body is a house of troubles. This body is a house of desires. And this body is a house of torturing. But still, we love our body. One lady came to me about 23 years ago. She said her husband beats her every day. He kicks her, and she says she doesn't dare to show me, but she has blue spots all the time. So I told her, "Why don't you leave him?" She said, "I can't leave him because I love him." Yes, so we can't leave this body because we love our body. Every day, this body is kicking us. Every day, some problem here, some problem there... And we don't know how to deal with this body. So, it doesn't matter in which body—humans, animals, or vegetation—it is a limitation. So, God is very gracious and gave us this body. Use the time, utilize the time, for you do not come again in this body. Rebirth and death. How many times do we repeat it? Thank you for watching.
