Awakening of spiritual consciousness

A spiritual discourse on overcoming fear, ignorance, and negative energies through mantra and self-knowledge.

"As soon as you light a lamp, switch on a light, the darkness disappears so quickly you do not know where it went."

"Where there is ignorance, there is fear, there is darkness. And where there is knowledge, there is light, there is happiness."

The speaker explains the awakening of spiritual consciousness as a process of purifying the layers of ignorance (mala, vikṣepa, āvaraṇa) and the three fires of suffering (Ādhibhautik, Ādhidaivik, Ādhyātmik). He asserts that the mantra, empowered by the Guru's blessing, is the tool to dispel this inner darkness, burn negative karma, and create a protective light. This is illustrated through two parables: one about a boy escaping a ghost in a cave by realizing his invulnerability, and another about a man terrified by a ghost that turns out to be a moonlit chimney, demonstrating that fear itself creates the perceived threat. The talk concludes with a mantra repetition for protection.

We are working on consciousness, the awakening of spiritual consciousness. Consciousness is consciousness. But within consciousness, or layered upon it, are strata of ignorance and the destiny from past lives. Many things lie dormant in our consciousness, both good and bad. To strive to overcome the bad and develop the good is the purification of consciousness, and that is the awakening of spiritual consciousness. Holy Gurujī used to give a beautiful example. There is a cave in a mountain, and inside the cave it is completely dark. You go into the cave and ask the darkness, "Please go away." The darkness will tell you, "No, it is my birthright to be here. For millions of years I will not go; it is my property, my cave." As soon as you light a lamp, switch on a light, the darkness disappears so quickly you do not know where it went. Similarly, in our consciousness or in our intellect, we have the darkness of ignorance. And when ignorance is present, then fear emerges from your subconscious. You know, everything moves towards light. When you put seeds in the ground, they sprout towards the light. Similarly, our inner self is a symbol of the cosmic light. But there are three layers covering it: mala, vikṣepa, and āvaraṇa. Mala is impurity—the impurity of our thinking, negative thinking, the impurity from our nourishment, and many, many things. Then vikṣepa. Vikṣepa means the disturbances—disturbances from the outer world and from the inner world. The outer world means from other people, from animals, from astral beings, or what you call magic. This is known as the three tapas, the three kinds of fires. These three fires disturb us. All creatures are suffering in these three tapas and searching for a way out of this fire. These three tapas are Ādhibhautik, Ādhidaivik, and Ādhyātmik: the troubles from people or animals; the troubles, the diseases from inside; and the troubles from astral beings. These three tapas can only be purified if you have a strong tool, a weapon in your hand. And that is your mantra. Through these mantras, you can burn out all negative karmas and all negative energies. All these three fires and sins will be dissolved. Paramanandam, avichal sukha—avichal means immovable, everlasting. Sukha means happiness. Paramanandam means the supreme bliss, everlasting bliss. You will realize this everlasting bliss through your mantra. There are negative energies; some people can feel them, some cannot. There are some people who try to play with magic things, but where there is light, darkness cannot come. When you switched on the light in the cave, the darkness disappeared. Go with a torch to search, "Where is the darkness?" You will find it nowhere. Similarly, when you have your mantra and the blessing of Gurū Dev, then you have light around your body, as I spoke yesterday about the individual phenomenon. In some, there is only darkness and fear, and in some, there is light and happiness. Where there is ignorance, there is fear, there is darkness. And where there is knowledge, there is light, there is happiness. No negative energy or magic can harm you. Darkness does not have the ability or power to come to the light. Though it has existed for millions of years, darkness will disappear immediately, and so will your destiny. No one can do anything to you. There was a small village, and children had to go to school in other villages. On the way, there was a small mountain, and in the mountain, there was a small cave. People believed there was a ghost in the cave. So no one dared to go there after sunset, when it was dark. Parents used to tell children, "Come quickly from school home, don't come late." One boy was a little bit naughty. He went to buy ice cream and some kind of chocolates and such. Other children, after school finished, would go straight home. The boy was going here and there and was completely alone. It was sunset, winter time, and it became dark. The boy was very afraid. He was running to come home, and on the way, someone was standing like this, saying, "Come here, boy. Now I will take you with me." He caught him, took him into the cave very far away inside, and put a big rock as a door, so he couldn't run away. The ghost tells the boy, "Well, actually, I should kill you, but you are such a nice boy, I will not do this. You have a duty: clean my cave and cook for me every day." So the boy, who was about 15 or 16 years old, had to work. The boy asked the ghost, "Where are you going every day?" He said, "There's a cosmic parliament sitting. God is president. Here are sitting devas, and here are sitting rākṣasas, the two parties." So, the boy asked him, "Can you please tell your president, your God, how long of a life I have?" "Okay, I will do it for you." And in the evening, when he came home, the boy asked him, "Did you ask God?" "Yes, God said you still have 85 years to live." "It means 85 years I must be in this cave," said the boy. "Yes," said the ghost. "Can you ask God tomorrow, please, if He can make my life shorter?" "Okay, I will ask." And he went to God and asked that the boy wished to die as soon as possible. God said, "No, it is not possible. It is destiny, fixed." No one can change the cosmic law. Then he told the boy, who was unhappy. The boy said, "I don't like number 84, you know, that after 84 I will die in the 85th. Please, can you ask God to prolong a little more years, twenty years more, or two days more?" God said, "No, we can't prolong." The ghost came back. "Sorry, God cannot prolong your life." Then he asked, "Is there any way to die?" He said, "No, unfortunately, till 85 years, no one can kill you." So the boy was cooking, and there was a big piece of firewood burning, and he took this burning piece of wood and said, "Ghost, I will kill you now. Open the door." "You can't kill me." So the ghost had to open the door, and the boy went happily home. That's it. The cave is a cave of depression, and ignorance is the ghost of darkness, and that will kill you. So you have to awaken self-confidence. No magic can do anything to you; no psychic terror can destroy you. You are an immortal soul. You have within you eternal light, and you have that cosmic resonance: the sound, the light, and... Sound. The sound means the Aum, and Aum is the resonance of the entire universe. Na dharupa para-brahma, the form of the Supreme is that resonance, the sound, and through that sound, the light is created through that resonance. And the light means the knowledge. Knowledge means self-confidence, fearlessness, and having so much self-confidence that no one can do anything to me. Of course, spiritual power. Don't do negative things. If you are doing negative, then the ghost will attack you again. Therefore, Guru Kṛpāhi Kevalam—we need the blessing of Gurudev. No one can do anything to you. Therefore, Holy Gurujī said: Nishaṅkh kabhī mat dharanā, nirbhairav nishaṅkh kabhī mat dharanā. Terī satguru cintā mat karanā, nirbhairav nishaṅkh kabhī mat dharanā... I don't want to die with anyone. I don't want to die with anyone. May Guru Sāraṇa always be happy. May Guru Sāraṇa always be happy. Do not have fear, do not hesitate, do not be scared. The Gurudev will protect you. Jisko rakhe Rāma kisī se nahī̃ marnā—whom God wants to protect, no one can kill. Ākhir mukti pāye Hari se milnā—and finally you will get liberation and become one with God. Therefore, it is our own fear, and our own fear creates the ghost. There was a beautiful small city like Novomesto, and there was a man who had two houses: one house inside the city and one house a little bit in the forest. People believed that in the forest house, the forest cottage, a ghost was living. Now, he once invited many, many guests for the wedding of his daughter, and he accommodated all people in the house and in hotels. He had one very dear guest, the director of his company, and there was no suitable residence or accommodation for the director. So they told the director, "We have a whole house for you: a beautiful hut, sleeping room, living room, bathroom, and kitchen, beautiful garden." So he said, "Good, I'm happy to go there." When he was talking to his director, some people heard this, and one lady said, "Oh my God, sorry, for this man, in that house is a..." Ghost living—this is called blackmailing. He heard that in that house a ghost is living, and that man, who was very afraid of ghosts and black magic, but being a director, a high position, he didn't dare to say, "No, I'm afraid to go there." So at night, about 11 o'clock, 10:30, 11, he went there. The host showed him everything: a bathroom, water, this, that, and went away. Now, the director locked all the doors, all the windows, all the curtains, and went to sleep. His heart was beating: "My ghost will come." If some sound came from outside—from the night birds, from the... from the oil? "Oh, my God, he's coming! The ghost is coming!" He put a blanket over his face and kept a little open, looking if the ghost was coming or not. At one o'clock in the night, the moon was coming higher, and there was a small window from the roof, and moonlight was falling on the chimney, the tiles chimney, kakhla open. He said, "A ghost is standing there, a big ghost." "Oh my god, my head is somewhere in this roof. No, it's a goat without a head." This man, the director, was paralyzed, couldn't move. "The ghost is standing near in the corner," he started screaming, "Help, help!" So the people who were somewhere near ran and came. "What's the problem?" "The ghost is killing me," they said. "Poor man, why did you sleep here? No one dares to go in." Then they called some other magic man. "Please, can you hunt the ghost away?" A magic man came, and he was doing something, "Swaśiśuṣ," but nothing happened. He brought pig bones, but nothing happened. Holy water, nothing happened. He said, "My God, this ghost, this Nugra ghost, has no guru. If this ghost had a guru, it would go away. The ghost has a guru, the ghost." Well, one man came and said, "Open the door." He said, "I can't open the door. A ghost is sitting on my chest and showing his nails already and big teeth. I think it is a decision of only seconds, not minutes. Please help me." So, there was a strong bodybuilder like Dayānpurī. He broke the window and jumped into the room. When the director saw that people were coming in through the window, he threw away the blanket, ran to the door, opened it, and went out. The bodybuilder also ran out and asked, "Where is the ghost?" "Look in the corner." And everybody said, "Yes, my God." Because of the white tiles over the chimney and the moonlight... The owner of the house came. He said, "My God, I never believed my house really has a ghost." And they said, "We shall pray. A ghost will go. We shall say mantras, the ghost will go away." The ghost didn't move. Then one man came from the village, the wise one, who didn't believe in ghosts because there's no ghost. He was always telling people there's no ghost. And there were about 200 people gathered. When there is something good, no one gathers. But when there's fighting and quarreling, then everybody gathers there. So they told that man who didn't believe in ghosts, "Now come, your grandfather is standing in the corner. You don't believe in ghosts? Who is that? Look." He said, "There is no ghost, my dears." "Then go in, we will see if you come back." He took a torch light and put the light on the chimney. "My dear, this is a chimney." The owner said, "Oh God, I've forgotten. Really, in my chimney..." The director said, "Before going to sleep, I put wood inside to make heating. How did the chimney become a ghost?" The light came, and all disappeared. Question: how and from where did the ghost come? How long was the ghost troubling the person, and how did the ghost disappear? One answer: your fear. Your fear made the ghost. Your fear let you suffer, and now the light of knowledge, the torchlight came, the ghost disappeared. There is no magic power, no ghost. Our fear, our vṛttis is a ghost. If there's a magic man who can manipulate you, then tell him to go and manipulate President Bush from America, or go to the other presidents. Go to the Dino check. He can give you something. Why does the magic man disturb the poor people? It is only what you call phobias. There is no ghost. I can write it for you on a piece of paper: there is no ghost. And there is no black magic. Black magic is your negative criticizing, your negative thinking. Be free, be light, so no darkness will come near you, and you have the light of the mantra initiation. Therefore, don't be afraid. Repeat mantra: Oṁ Dīp Nirañjan Sab Dukha Bhañjan Oṁ Dīp Nirañjan Sab Dukha Bhañjan Oṁ Dīp Nirañjan Sab Dukha Bhañjan Oṁ Prabhu Dīp Nirañjan Sab Dukha Bhañjan This mantra is against black magic. This mantra will take you out of all troubles.
