Upmanyu - The Ultimate Devotee
This is a story about a devotee's unwavering obedience to his master. Long ago, a young boy named Upamanyu sought Self-realization. His master gave only harsh work and denied him food. Upamanyu was forbidden from begging twice or drinking the cows' milk. He survived on foam from the cows' mouths. During a storm, he used his own body to plug a breach in a field. Later, starving, he ate poisonous leaves and went blind, falling into a well. When the master found him, he chanted a mantra. The god Aśvinī Kumār appeared, offering food. Upamanyu refused to eat without offering to his master first. For this ultimate devotion, he was blessed with Self-realization. The master revealed the disciple's suffering had always been in the master's own heart.
"Master, I could not stop the water. And if I would not stop the water, I would not be able to fulfill my Guru Vākya. So I decided myself to lie here to block the water."
"Even though you are God, you are giving me bhikṣā, you are giving me food to eat. I cannot eat without offering to my master."
