Bandhas

A practical teaching session on the three yogic locks (bandhas) and their combined practice as Mahābandha.

"The word bandha means to block, to close, to tighten... when we practice this bandha, then energy develops there."

"It is the best for the hemorrhoids, so those who have hemorrhoid problems can... solve this problem through Mūlabandha."

Swami Anand Arun leads the session, beginning with a theoretical introduction referencing texts like Hidden Powers in Humans. He explains the principle of bandhas through analogies like a blocked drain, then guides a physical exercise with the hands to demonstrate the effect. He details the physiological and energetic benefits of Mūlabandha, Uḍḍīyāna Bandha, and Jālandhara Bandha, relating them to health, glandular function, and potential spiritual awakening. The talk concludes with a promise for practical practice the following day.

Before yesterday and last week, we practiced the three bandhas, and together these three become Mahābandha. Let's begin from Mūlabandha. You have a book called Hidden Powers in Humans, and in this book is written about the Mūlādhāra Cakra and also about Mūlabandha. Then you read about Svādhiṣṭhāna and Mūlādhāra, Maṇipūra Cakra, and you read about Uḍḍīyāna Bandha. Then you read about Viśuddhi Cakra, and you read in Viśuddhi Cakra about Jālandhara Bandha. Then you read in the book Yoga in Daily Life, where Āsana, Prāṇāyāma, Mudrās, and Bandhas are described. So, theoretically you know this, but many don't know. Or, many of us maybe didn't practice. So, bandha—the word bandha means to block, to close, to tighten. You lock someone in prison. We call prison, jail mein bandh kardiya; it closes you in the jail. Or you close the water pipe, or you close your gas tank, or you make a dam. Now, wherever you try to close something, the tattvas, then if you try to block the tattvas, then the strength develops. Opposition develops. For what? To become free. If you pull someone under the water, you will see how much strength develops in the person to come out. Similarly, when we practice this bandha, then energy develops there. Open that, and when you open that, then all blocked channels begin to flow in your body. Our kitchen's drainage is blocked. Now you have to give some pressure to open that, and when it opens, then everything flows through. So that is the effect of the bandha, and we made many experiments about it. So we can do now again. Raise your hand. Lift your left hand and look at your palm, beautiful palm, and close your fist, thumb inside, and pump a little bit. Now take your right hand and hold from this side or that side, it doesn't matter. Tighten it, and now open your left hand only, hold very... Tighten your right hand and slowly concentrate and feel your palm. Perhaps hold it like this, a little, so that you see better in the light. You are tired today. And now, release your right hand. Good. Now you feel your both hands different. Let's do with the right hand, like milking a goat, you know? Hold a tight fist and hold the wrist tight. It's strong. And now, open the palm. This time, look more consciously, and now release your left hand. Now, this exercise is very, very good when we have cold hands in winter. Now, similarly, when we contract our anus muscle, then there happens something during the contraction, which is seconds. You feel a very pleasant sensation going through the spine, which gives a very pleasant sensation toward the ears and head and everything. And at the same time, when you relax again, open that contraction has also that kind of healing. This means ascending of the energy. This is how you can pull your medhā śakti and energy towards your head, Sahasrāra Cakra. And when you hold it longer, that becomes Mūlabandha. And when you will release, the same thing will... It happens that blood circulation will be stronger physically. It is the best for the hemorrhoids, so those who have hemorrhoid problems can release this problem or solve this problem through Mūlabandha. Also, there are sometimes people who have problems to keep their stool; there is no more control. So these muscles, which coordinate and control the apāna, these muscles are strengthened. Also, people who cannot keep their urine, for them it is also very good, this exercise. That is also one exercise called Garuḍāsana, and this Garuḍāsana is also very, very good for these muscles and for the abdominal muscles and organs also. When a man, a male, gets older, then the prostate begins to grow bigger, so this bandha is not only for awakening the Kuṇḍalinī, but also for the ladies when they have menstruation problems and pain cramps. This bandha can help and release. It means you have to practice long, not only when you have a problem. And it also improves the circulation in your intestines. Through this, the digestive process will be better. Then there are two mudrās very close to the Mūlabandha. Yes, actually three mudrās. One is called Aśvinī Mudrā, which you know. Then it's called Vajrolī Mudrā and Amarolī Mudrā. This you can read in the Gheraṇḍa Saṁhitā or in the Śiva Saṁhitā books. Now, when you make a yoga teacher course, then you should have read the complete Gheraṇḍa Saṃhitā, Śiva Saṃhitā, Gorakṣa Saṃhitā, and Patañjali, Gorakṣa Saṁhitā and the Yoga in Daily Life Saṁhitā, and the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā. So, all these kriyās belong in the future for your yoga teacher trainings. And every yoga teacher who has permission to teach or prepare the yoga teachers should have in their Kalī Kums. This is very important. Then you will understand what is Vajrolī and Amarolī. So Vajrolī and Amarolī are between your anus and abdomen. They do more with your gender systems. You can suck through your urinary pipe or space one liter of water in. And there are some people doing. You need not do, okay? And don't try to do it. Because nowadays water is not so clean. You will get more infections than getting something better. But in some cases, it is helpful. That's why they are doing it. Those who have problems with gallbladders, those who have problems with the bladders, and those who have problems with some kind of infections, then they have to suck the oil inside, different kind of oil, or milk, or sometimes honey and milk together. So this is ethnotherapies, and I hope we will not need anymore, because we are all healthy. The health, the sound of the healthy brain is like this. Let me hear your anything. He's sleeping, dormant. There's no nāda. Okay, so it has more physical effect than what you call the awakening of Kuṇḍalinī and this and that, the Mūlabandha, Aśvinī Mudrā. This is very effective to overcome depressions, to develop the concentration, to get rid of certain ideas, and it is... What you call Śaktipāt means it's awakening just for seconds. Now, if you go further for this Mūlabandha according to Kuṇḍalinī's awakening, then this sensation, which you feel only for a second or two seconds, you should be able to keep for five minutes, for 10 minutes, constantly. These beautiful feelings are rising up, and as this energy rises up and fills your entire head, then you are intoxicated in divine energy. So there's no intoxication, but it is the divine. Then the Chitta vṛtti becomes calm, you forget your body pain, and you are in meditation. In that kind of meditation, you can imagine that all your illnesses are going out because through awakening of your particular center, Mūlādhāra, or these glands, which supports very, very much your immunity system. And this your immunity is capable to fight against all other illnesses. Whatever is something foreign material inside, it will be destroyed through your immunity. So to gain the immunity, the health, Mūlādhāra and Mūlabandha, that's very, very important. Then the Uḍḍīyānabandha. Uḍḍīyāna means to fly, and I don't teach you this because you will all fly. What will we do with all these cars here? You will leave your cars here and fly, Uḍḍīyāna. It means to fly. It means to let fly up your entire intestines, stomach muscles. Your waist here becomes only so much. You can hold and touch your both fingers. In my case, I need the hands. That's it, because the energy blowed up, and it is not easy to squeeze, but still some of you can. So that activates our digestive fire, jāṭharāgni. So, Uḍḍīyāna means to pull up, expanding the diaphragm, and it also supports your heart to have a rest for a while because the volume of the diaphragm is increasing. Then Jālandhara Bandha, which is again for one of the most important glands in the body. It is the thyroid gland, and many have problems with the thyroid. And when the thyroid is operated on, then you have to take certain hormones. So, through the Viparītakaraṇī Mudrā, through the Sarvāṅgāsana, Ustrāsana, Ākāśī Mudrā, Śambhavī Mudrā, Jālandhara Bandha, Bhujaṅgāsana, Boat Rolling, and Śīrṣāsana—these all āsanas, exercises—you can influence, control, and keep healthy function of your thyroid. When we do the Boat Rolling, we don't think, but automatically our neck is playing along. So it's a combination of the Jālandhara Bandha and Ākāśīmudrā, Śambhavīmudrā and Jālandhara Bandha. And you think you do only for Mūlādhāra or Maṇipūra. Through this movement, you influence your Mūlādhāra Cakra, solar plexus, Maṇipūra, and the thoracic. All neck tension will release. You will have beautiful feelings. Simple but powerful. So, practically, we will do it tomorrow. Tonight, I wish you all the best.
