Sri Mahaprabhuji incarnation of Lord Vishnu

A satsang commemorating the Mahāsamādhi of Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī.

"Mahāprabhujī was born with all the divine kalās, all divine siddhis. The difference between an incarnation and a Siddha is this: one is born or incarnated with all the spiritual divine powers."

"A self-realized soul, an enlightened soul, a God-realized one, when that one leaves the body, then the jīvā doesn't exist anymore... becomes one with the Brahman, and that's called Brahmaleena."

Swami Madhavananda delivers a discourse from Vienna, honoring the anniversary of his guru's passing. He explains the nature of divine incarnations, describes the miraculous signs at Mahāprabhujī's birth, and explores the spiritual meaning of Mahāsamādhi versus physical death. He concludes by discussing how a devotee's faith connects them to the grace of a liberated master.

Om Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī, Śrī Śrī Devapuruṣa Mahādeva kī, Dharmasamrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Gurudeva kī, Satya Sanātana Dharma kī jaya. Blessings to everybody. Salutation to Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī. All dear brothers and sisters, bhaktas around the world, this blessing is coming to you from the headquarters of Yoga and Daily Life, Austria, Vienna. Today we are thanking and offering our flowers of devotion to our beloved Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī. Today is his Mahāsamādhi day. Bhagavān Śrī Dīpnā and Mahāprabhujī incarnated in India, Rajasthan district, Nāgaur, village Harivāśnī. About Mahāprabhujī, his incarnation, his life, his divine power, the godly consciousness, you can read in the holy book called Līlāmṛt. This Leela Amrita book is written by our beloved Gurudev, Hindu Dharma Samrāṭ Paramahaṁsa Śrī Svāmī Madhavānanda Purījī. Many of you know, and many know through the books, photos, and videos. Mahāprabhujī was born with all the divine kalās, all divine siddhis. The difference between an incarnation and a Siddha is this: one is born or incarnated with all the spiritual divine powers, energies, or siddhis. Others, the Siddhas, are those who are born as good humans and lead a life very disciplined, very sāttvic, spiritual, and praying and doing spiritual yoga sādhanas. According to that, one can get self-realization, divine consciousness. Like Bhagavān Buddha—Buddha was born as a normal human, a prince. But through his yoga practice and meditation, he got enlightenment or self-realization. So Siddhartha is known as a Buddha. Buddha means self-realized or enlightened one. Similarly, Bhagavān Śrī Narendra Mahāprabhujī, before he came to this material world, before he came to his mother's body, all divine messages and divine signs were there. Holy Mother, Chandandevījī, had the divine visions already one year before. Exactly according to her divine visions and experiences. And on that day, when she got the vision that Lord Viṣṇu would incarnate in her house, that she would be the mother, and Lord Śiva himself told her in her meditation on Śivarātri, "Oh mother, I will come personally to adore you." And to see the divine child for whom I and millions of people are waiting—that was the forecast, that was the experiences and visions which Divine Mother Chandan Devī Jī had. Yes, it was a very spiritually significant day. That's called Day Dipāvalī, Dīvālī. Dear brothers and sisters, the festival of Dīvālī goes more than 10,000 years behind. When the God Rāma, Lord Viṣṇu in the form of the God Rāma, incarnated. And Rama played a beautiful role in this life to make humans aware and very clear of what the duty of a human, or human dharma, is in this world. He was a perfect great son, he was a great brother, he was a perfect great husband, he was a great saint, he was an incarnation, he was a great warrior, he was a great protector, and he was a symbol of love and mercy. And therefore, God Rāma is known as the Maryādā Puruṣottam. Mariyādā Puruṣottam means one who follows all the ethics and moral principles. And Puruṣottama—Puruṣa means the human, the best among humans. That's called God, Puruṣottam. Uttam in Puruṣa, where God Rāma had to go for 14 years in the forest. In Azeel, he experienced many worldly difficulties. He came to know the nature of different people. It's not easy, but that's life. After 14 years, God Rāma is coming back to Ayodhyā, to his birthplace. He was also born in the royal family, the royal dynasty. When the message arrived that God Rāma is coming back, people were so happy, people were so delighted. For them, it was like a dawn rising, like a thirsty plant getting rain. A suffering person gets release from the pain. A blind person gets eyes. Without any differences, all people were very happy. Young kids, the youth, the elderly, men, women. And in honor of the Lord Rāma, they decorated the whole city, Ayodhyā. They decorated the whole path. Now, it was this time, time of like November, where the sun is moving more to the south and the sunset is earlier than in the summer. Sunrise is later than in the summer. It means short days and long nights. What people did was they were decorating, and they wanted to see when God would come. May he come a little late, and it is already sunset, and we will not see him, or he will not find a way to the house, to home. So what people did was they decorated the trees with the lights. They hung on each branch of the tree, in every direction, oil lamps. That time there was no electricity. That time there was no candles, no wax. At that time, there were only two kinds of fuel which people used, either oil or ghee. They didn't use ghee because it's already cool, and ghee gets more solid, frozen, and the lamp will go out. Therefore, they decorate the trees with the lights in such a beautiful way, hanging the fruits and the sweets, so that when the people come and if they're hungry, they should take and eat something. Everyone finds something under that tree, on that tree, that Lord God Rāma is coming, and no one should be hungry and thirsty. Someone was hanging the water pot so you could take water and drink. When I came first time to Europe in 1970, I saw first time a Christmas tree, because in Rajasthan, in desert, and there's... More number of Hindus, very few Christians, and we don't have snow, and we don't have this, the Tannenbaum. But when I came here and I saw the Christmas tree, I remember I said, "Is the Rāma coming today?" So I think how every festival is connected. For me, Christmas is that imitation of God Rāma's trees. That message when the God Jesus came, the people were happy. And for children, he brings something, and we find under the trees something to eat and everything. So you see how the culture is connected. It is 10,000, more than 10,000 years old. Culture is still vivid in the world today, so this day is called Diwali. Diwali also means fortune, good luck, and happiness. When you win your lotto, you know, then we will say, "Oh, he has now the Dīvālī," or you get something beautiful. You are very happy. We will say, aaj in kī Dīvalī ho gayī. Today he has a Diwali, so happiness. And this tradition comes on carrying. There are three very significant days. The very first day is called the day of prosperity, and here prosperity means good health. Ayurveda, the first sentence in Ayurveda is said, the first happiness or the first prosperity, wealth, is a healthy body. And that healthy body, in order to have a healthy body, you have to use some healthy remedies. So we call, one day before Dīvālī is called Dhan Teras. This is the 13th moon day, Dhan Teras, but in reality it is called Dhanvantrī Teras. So that god, Dhanvantrī, the law god of the Āyurveda, the symbol of the Āyurveda, which is Satya Yuga, when they were churning the ocean, fourteen ratnas came out of that, and one of the ratnas was Amṛta. God Dhanvantari came with the Amṛta Kalaśa. So this day first means the wealth, the good health. Second day, Diwali, the light, that means the Lakṣmī. And Lakshmī means the wealth, money, material comfort, not māyā. Lakshmījī, and Lakshmī is the faithful one of Viṣṇu. Lakshmi is a faithful one of Vishnu, and so everyone adores Lakshmi on this day. They make Lakṣmī pūjā. Then the next day is the day of Viṣṇu. We in Indian language, we call Rama Sama. Throughout every India, throughout the whole India, on this day, morning of the next day of Diwali, everyone will say, "Rām Rām Sama." Rama Sama means the God Rāma has come to you. Like you said, on the 25th morning you will say, "Happy Christmas." Now, this is exactly how we have these three different, symbolic days. That one day before Christmas, you collect the fruits and good things as a health. Then, exactly on Christmas Day, you illuminate the tree. And the next morning, you say, "Happy Christmas." The Lord, Jesus, arrived on the birthday of the Lord. Similarly, on the day of Diwali, people were lighting oil lamps made of clay or ceramic, with no more than 20 grams of oil inside. That cannot burn the whole night. But in that village, at the time in Brahmamuhūrta when Mahāprabhujī incarnated, suddenly all oil lamps went on burning. Like someone had lit the candles again for the lamps. It was noticed that different kinds of rain came: kesar and milk. And the flowers were falling. This still speaks to the people who witnessed this. A few years ago, it happened with me, and some of you have experienced this. We were in Jaipur, making an opening ceremony for one oil mill. After opening this, we went and drained the milk. You know the person, Mr. Gathani, who was in Vienna a few years ago. His children were studying here, and this happened: the oil mill was Gathani's. And the second time when I came, it was one year, and they invited me, "Swāmījī, please come. It's already one year of our this oil mill." And really, the rain, the kesar saffron rain, it spread the message among all businessmen. That who is the Gathānī, and who is his guru, and what it happens? So for some people, it is like a fairy tale. But those who experienced, they know what it means. And so that happened when Viśvadīpa Hari Jagme Āyā, when the light of the universe manifested on this planet in the form of Mahāprabhujī, this happened. And Mahāprabhujī lived approximately 135 years. And in these 135 years, numerous miracles happened. Now, not that he performed the miracles, but it happened naturally by his presence. And this is this, that two kinds of persons are there. One is who is practicing and getting the siddhis, miracles, and demonstrates them, that I can do this, I can do this. This means that it is a māyā for that person. Siddhi is a māyā for a yogī or a sādhaka. When you come, there are certain different kinds of māyās. The last māyā is the siddhis, that again you fall down. But the divine incarnations are very rare yogīs who have many siddhis, but they don't want to demonstrate at all. But it can happen through their presence. It can happen through their words, through listening. But they will not do it purposely. And so, in these 135 years, so many divine miracles happened. Some of them, which Holī Gurujī remembered in his time—40 years with Holī Gurujī, Mahāprabhujī—and some papers which told him that he collected all these miracles, and he wrote in this book called Līlā Amṛta. So you should read the Līlā Amṛt. Sab kus deve dātā dīp dayāl. It's Mā Prabhujī who can give, who is giving everything. But you need a good pot. Uparse bhare, niche se jhare, Gurū Mahārāj, uskā kyā kare? From above, the Master is filling everything, but below is broken, so everything drops out. What can Gurudev do alone? So we need a patra. Patra ko vastu milti hai. Shupatra, kupatra ko nahi. Shupatra means good pot. And kupatra means a bad pot, a broken one. And so, the river is flowing, and you go with some pots to bring water. If you have a 10-liter can, you will bring 10 liters of water. Others have only half a liter. You can bring only a half-liter bottle. And someone has five liters, but it is broken. By the time you come home, the bottle is all gone. Therefore, the spiritual energy only remains with those who are faithful. Holy Gurujī said, "Yogī, yatī, koi mehnat karke bove bhajan kī bāḍī, yeh man bandar badā harāmī, palme bāḍī bigaḍī." Yogīs and yatīs, yatī means one who is doing very much yogasādhanā, yatna, trying. Yogi, yatī, koi mehnat karke, with great hard work, bove bhajan kī bāḍī, they create a beautiful garden of spirituality, garden of spirituality. Yeh man bandar badā harāmī, but this mind is a monkey, and this monkey is so. Stupid palms, badly bigadi, within no time the whole garden destroys. So the Gurudev, years and years, Gurudev tries to give something to us, and out of our carelessness, ignorance, stupidness, or whatever you call, destroys everything. So it is not a... The mistake of the Gurudev is our mistake. Your pot is broken. You need śupatra, kupatra nahī. That one can give you. It is said, the milk of the tiger you can keep all in a golden pot, and other pots will be spoiled very quickly. Also, it is said in a beautiful poem, you cannot keep water in a clay pot which is not yet burnt. This quicksilver, you cannot carry in paper. It will run out. This kingfisher, what can they do with the pearls? The pearls are a nourishment for the paramahaṁsa, the swan, not for these ducks. And so, such great bhaktas, whose antakaraṇa is pure, can this spiritual light survive and bring them to the divine consciousness? Well, it is said, ātmā is immortal. Ātmā is not born. Ātmā is not young. Ātmā is not old. Ātmā cannot be divided. Eternal, immortal, everlasting, divine, that's called the Ātmā. Saul is jīvātmā, and Saul is individual. And this individual soul is created out of our actions, our ambitions, our desires, our greediness. The soul is born, and the soul is again dying, meaning it is going to the astral world and taking a new body again. Janam maraṇ ka chakra, the cycle of birth and death is counted for the soul, not for the ātmā. Now, why do we specially think of the Mahāsamādhi of a saint? For us, it is a very sad day that he went away from this world. But what does it remind us? Of course, first of all, we offer our bhakti, adoration, devotion; it's called the flowers of the devotion to the Gurudev or to the person who passed away. Now, these are three categories which we use the words in normal language. Mṛtyu, someone passed away, someone died. Second word, śvaragwas. We will not use the word he or she died. Uska svargavās hogayā. Uska svargavās hogayā. He or she went to heaven. And when the great saint is passed away, then we don't say Svargavāsa ho gayā, Brahmaleena ho gayā. So these are the three words: death, Svargavāsa, and Brahmaleena. Death means: who has died and will be born after so many karmas? When all will be counted, written, collected, brought in order, then how many, in which life, you have to go? Which form of the life? Where? How will be your life? How many sufferings you will have? How many disappointments you will have, or how much happiness you will have, how many pleasures you will have, all depends on your destiny. Destiny, the products or the fruits of your karma: prārabdha, pehle rachā, pīche rasā, śarīra. First is the pralabdha, created means destiny, and then is created the body. It means this soul will get another body in the next life according to the karma. Destiny must not be that an Austrian is born in Austria again; maybe an Austrian is born in India, or an Indian is born in Africa, or Africans born in America. Also, it is not sure that a human is born again as a human. No, you don't have a permanent reservation for a human body. You believe or you don't believe. Belief can't help you at all. Belief cannot change reality. No philosophy, no religion, no politics, no belief can change reality. Reality is the reality, and that's why in English they said, "Evidence will never die." Evidence will never die. It doesn't matter how much law you go here and there, and this and that. Evidence, the reality, is the reality. The sun is rising from the east. And that direction where the sun is rising, we gave the name east. Now, if you believe or not, it's rising in the east, that's it. You are sitting in Vienna, believe or not, but you are sitting now in Vienna. So, belief does not change the reality, but you will see the reality. This is the best one, in which form I don't want to tell too much. Second one went to the heaven. Heaven is not an everlasting life. Heaven is given to you through your good deeds, good karma, but when this good karma's credit is used completely, no more credit out of heaven, there's heaven not placed anymore for you. Like you have now the SIM card in your telephone, and you have money on it, and you have a very important call to make. But money went out. Hari Om. Cut off. That's it. So when you have used all your good qualities, then again you have to come to Charasī. Charasi means you have to come again to this world. Brahmalīna. Brahmā. Brahman is, you can say, the form, a name of God, which has no form, which has no name, which has no limitation. Brahman is like the sky, equal everywhere. The objects existing in the sky, the skies, are not in the objects. The sky is everywhere, equal in this room, in this microphone, in this body, and outside of it. The room, so is the Brahman. So, a self-realized soul, an enlightened soul, a God-realized one, when that one leaves the body, then the jīvā doesn't exist anymore, no more. The identity of that soul is there, becomes one with the Brahman, and that's called Brahmaleena, so for every sādhu, sannyāsī, or saint, when they pass away from this world, either we will call it Mahāsamādhi or we will call it Brahmalīn. Now, the question is coming. I put a question, and I try to answer the question. Let's say Mahāprabhujī and Gurujī are Brahmalīna. No identity is existing in the universe. They are one with the Brahman. Then how will they help us? We are praying, you understand me? My question: who is helping us? Yes, it is our bhāva, it is our devotion, it is our faith that helps us. And so, our faith will take the form of them to help us, but they are not in that pañca tattva or... The sūkṣma śarīra is with us. You love your mother very much. In the night, you will dream of your mother. You will not dream of my mother, yes? Or you love your dog, and you will dream that you are coming from holidays. You are somewhere on holidays, and you are you dreaming from your dog? You didn't dream from my cow; you dream from your dog. So, this is your bhārmikā that creates. And when you dream from your dog, because you love your dog very much, that form is created in your bhāvanā, and that bhāvanā... Awake more love in that direction. And so is God, whether it is Rāma or Kṛṣṇa or any other holy saints or God whom you believe—Jesus or Kṛṣṇa or Buddha or anyone. This is your devotion, your faith that unites you to the Brimaline one, to the supreme one, and that will carry you there too. And so, today, according to this sun calendar, our Rasola calendar, Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa Mahāprabhujī became brahmalīna, mahāsamādhi, 1963, 5th of December. And according to the lunar calendar, it is different every year because the moon is changing. And according to the moon calendar, this year will be the 17th to 18th of December. The 27th to 28th, this night will be, and where we will all be in India and will have the satsaṅg in honour and in memory of Śrī Mahāprabhujī in Jadanāś. So on this day, on this very spiritual day, this very auspicious day, I bless you in the name of Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Dhan Mahāprabhujī and our spiritual lineage, paramparā. That they protect you, guide you, and bless you, that all your wishes, if they are positive, come true. Samsara, this world is connected with happiness and unhappiness, with joy and disappointment. But a bhakta will never have a disappointment. Mistakes you did, you have to correct the mistakes. Our inner self is ever and ever united. When the master and disciple have such a union, like water in water, Akasha in the akasha, then you cannot separate. And so it is that bhāva. And that bhāva helps you. It's you. And therefore, Guru Nānak Sāhib said, "The name of Gurudev is that boat." Those who will get in will definitely come to the mainland. Land. If you will remain seated with confidence, then that Gurudev is the captain of your boat or your ship. He will definitely bring you to the mainland. But if you jump out, then many sharks, high fish are waiting for breakfast, and you are the good breakfast for the shark. So it is our mistakes. No one is there to be blamed, only ourselves. And definitely, our aim is that divine aim, not this materialistic aim. So on this day, I wish you all the best, and I pray to Mahāprabhujī, though he is in... A bramble, but still, because when his name is there, his power is there. His photo is there, power is there, thanks to modern technology that now we have the real photos. Krishna's photo we don't have. We don't know how he was looking. Rama's photo we also don't have. We don't know how they were looking. Buddha, we don't know how he was looking, or Jesus. Just from telling, how was it? When you go to China, Jesus' image is like a Chinese. And when you go to India, Jesus' image is like Indians. Yeah, that is a bhakta's image. For them, it is he is like that. There was a time that all men liked to have a beard and moustache, so people were painting Lord Śiva also with the beard and moustache. Then the people shaved the beard, only had a moustache, so Śiva was they. We were painting also Śiva with the moustache, and now the men saved, so they have also Śiva and Rāma all saved. I'm asking, was in Himālaya so good saving machine that Śiva is also nicely shaped. This is a bhaktā's. This is a people's love. That's it. So we decorate them. We put their form as we like. We put the spices how we like. Individuals. Someone doesn't like salt, and someone likes salt. So, it doesn't matter how; the main thing is bhāva. Nāfā bhāv meṁ hai, vastu meṁ nahīṁ. Benefit is in the price, not in the goods. Today, the gold, one kilo, is one thousand euros. Tomorrow, the gold will be one kilo gold, one hundred thousand euros. So you win how much? Ninety-nine thousand. The gold didn't increase even half a gram, but you win ninety-nine thousand. In the same way, tomorrow the price will fall down from 1,000 to 100 euros per kilo. You lost 900 euros. Gold doesn't decrease at all. Gold is as it is. So Gurudev is as it is. God is as it is. It's your bhāva every day going up and down, up and down. So we are the stupid, you know. So when Gurudev said, "You are a stupid," say, "Yes, thank you to remind me that I am. Now I will be better to awake." You sometimes are a policeman. You are ignorant. Say, "Yes, accept." Look within. It is there because all these surface waves have to be removed. There are no waves; there's a street, one street. And so, to all dear listeners around the globe, wish you all the best and the blessings of Gurudev. And I pray to Mahāprabhujī for your well-being. Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinaḥ, Sarve Santu Nirmāyāḥ, Sarve Bhadrāṇi Paśyantu, Mā Kaścid Duhkhabhāg Bhavet. Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ...
