Be in the living presence of gurdev

A morning satsang webcast on the essential pillars of spiritual progress.

"Two things are very important. The first is called motivation... The second is the practice—to be with, to be there."

"Yoga, as I always say, is not for the general. Yoga is individual. Especially when the question of chakra awakening... arises, there is an individual guidance."

Swami Ji addresses a global audience, emphasizing that theoretical motivation gained from lectures and webcasts must be coupled with continuous, practical practice in the physical presence of a Master. He explains the limitations of remote learning, details techniques taught during the seminar, and announces a guided meditation for chakra purification. The talk uses analogies of a distant temple, the Ganga river, and a seed to illustrate the journey from intellectual understanding to embodied realization.

Many blessings to all the devotees watching the webcast this morning from around the world—the USA, Canada, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and so on. Many blessings. Two things are very important. The first is called motivation. To get motivation, we have to come to satsaṅg and to the lectures. This is part of the theory. Many times you hear, you come, but things don't become clear. Then, after many, many years, a sentence or a word comes in such a way that it immediately opens your inner lock. You say, "Yes, that is what I was searching for." It gives clear understanding, a clear picture, and creates clarity in your thoughts. But now, what? For example, we are standing down in the valley, and in the far distance, on top of the mountain, there is a beautiful temple of Gurudev. The weather is very clear, with no fog or clouds. The view is very clear. We see the ashram; we see the temple. Now we know we have to go there, so the theory is there. Theoretically, it is very clear, but practically, you are still not there. Practically, you have to walk or take some transportation. There is no road, so you cannot go by car or motorbike. You have to walk. If you walk for only one hour and then say, "Next week I will walk again," you will not reach that point. If you walk for five days and then say, "Now I have to go home, and next time I will come and walk up," you cannot go like this. Therefore, practice means continuity. Especially those techniques we do here in the seminar from time to time must be done with continuity. Thanks to technology, you get this information through our internet webcast. But the webcast is only a temptation for you. It is only a motivation. Reality is missing. Reality is there when you are sitting here in front of the Master. You feel the physical presence, and you get those techniques which you cannot get through the webcast. That leads you on a practical path. Yoga, as I always say, is not for the general. Yoga is individual. Especially when the question of chakra awakening, kuṇḍalinī awakening, meditation, mantra, and reaching higher levels of consciousness arises, there is an individual guidance. That individual guidance is there when you are all together with the Master in the seminar, sitting and learning. So, there are two things. One is motivation through lectures, readings, and media. The second is the practice—to be with, to be there. That is the practical way. From afar, it is a little help, but it is not enough. We had many beautiful techniques to practice this week. You learned techniques of meditation here, also a different technique of yoga nidrā—which was, of course, not broadcast—and you learned some different kriyā. These are all experiences you can do physically and practically. This week was very nice, especially in this beautiful, cool atmosphere. That is very good. We know when it is very warm, all the windows are open, a lot of noise comes in, and many other creatures fly inside. Mahāprabhujī was very blessed to you, and you had this great opportunity. Now, we will have one meditation. I must tell all the viewers that this meditation will not, unfortunately, be on the webcast, but you can have a recording of it. I hope that Chidānand, our video studio, will prepare a nice DVD. The meditation we will do now is an everyday meditation on how to purify our chakras, how to awaken these chakras, how we lead our consciousness or our mind to a deeper level, and how the consciousness should continue to the higher consciousness. Twice a year, we do what we call a special Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna retreat or seminar. In this Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna, we learn many, many techniques, but they should only be practiced in the group. There are some people who tried to do it themselves at home without the group, and they had difficulties—physical difficulties and mental difficulties—because this was not according to that energy and Guru Vākya. Guru Vākya was that these techniques should be done only in the group when the Gurudev is present there, or a teacher is present. Even if he is not in the same hall or room where you are practicing—maybe he is some kilometers away—his energy is concentrated on you more than if you do it alone. Those who did it alone at home had some problems and could not answer their questions. So, understand, these are techniques that should be done in the presence of the Master and with the group together. But this special meditation we will do now—this you can do at home, and you should do it every day. That will be very useful. Likewise, we will have meditation again tomorrow and some kriyā, which you can then obtain on your DVD. That is how you can get it. Of course, even when you practice later with a CD or tape recorder, the practice, the life, is different than what is preserved on the DVD. You have to feel that atmosphere. You have to be there. You can see many pictures of our holy Gaṅgā. You can see videos, DVDs, listen to audios, or see printed photos and read stories. But to be there and go deep into the Gaṅgā and come out—that is the difference. You may look on television at a nice picture of where the Gaṅgā begins, how it flows with a lot of mud—more than thick soup—then it flows clean, and then more things flow into it. That is the Gaṅgā. Everything is going into the Gaṅgā. It inspires you. You see people taking a dip; some are swimming, some are doing everything. But the real experience is when you are at the bank of the Gaṅgā, you take a dip, and you feel the water—the reality. You feel it on your skin. So it is that you feel the reality in the lecture, in reality, in the practice, and in being. With that, it is a very different thing now. Only those who understood me will understand this, and those who only want to listen to my voice and what I am telling. Using this wisdom is different. So, do you want to get realization? Do you want to develop more spiritually? Do you want to become one day a person of inspiration for thousands of other people? Yes? Then you have to first get this energy and this development. It is said the seed you put in the ground has to die. That seed has to dissolve, or it has to give life in such a way that its own form is dedicated, surrendered, and out of this, another new life emerges. So you are that original seed. Is it you who is going deep in meditation, and you realize, "Yes, within me is that potential"? That potential within you is capable of awakening, and then you—meaning your ego, your ambition, your selfishness, your greediness, your jealousy—these negative qualities you have to surrender. You have to say, "Yes, I am an angry person. Yes, I am a greedy one. Yes, I am a jealous one. Yes, I want to leave this away from me. I want to get free, and I want to get this divine jyotī, this divine light." Then you can give this light further. When the seed has grown into a mighty tree and gives beautiful apples or cherries or other fruits, then it is able to give to others also, and others can grow the seed somewhere as they like. There are some people who just look in books, read in libraries. They are called bookworms in English. They read this book, that book, and the lectures of that person and this person, take the main ideas, and then begin to preach very well. But this is only for a while; then it is finished. The artificial color of gold does not last forever, but real gold has that lasting quality. Therefore, if you act differently outside while expecting something different inside, you cannot come further; you cannot come one step further. Learn more about what they call nowadays in modern science, modern psychology, and modern systems: communication. Many people have problems communicating. How to communicate? Some people cannot because they have psychic problems, they have selfish problems. They have another interest, because if you communicate, you think you will not be able to sell your goods, your products. It means you are looking only at the consumers; you are not looking at communication. If you communicate, you think, "Okay, the people I communicate with will go to that fellow." That means the problem is within you—the communication problem. And why? Because greediness is there, ego is there, jealousy is there, hate is there, complexity is there. Then the seed cannot open. It is a hard coconut. Even if you hit it on your head, your head will break, not the coconut. That's it. But there is a technique for how to break the coconut, how that coconut grows from itself and becomes a beautiful coconut tree, and can create many, many coconuts. Many people will one day realize, "Oh God, I lost the whole time of my life out of my ignorance. I was only searching outside for contentment; I never looked within myself to have that contentment." But you could not have that contentment because you could not communicate. Accept. Learn to accept mistakes. This is very important. Do not blame others. Blaming is very interesting and very easy. You move only two lips and your tongue. That's all. But to accept, you have to surrender. You have to kill your ego; otherwise, you cannot accept. So these things we can learn when we are together. That's it. Then you also learn discipline. Now, many who are observing, watching this webcast, are sitting on a sofa, drinking coffee, and looking. Here, you cannot sit like that, you know. You have to sit straight. You see they are sitting straight because there is not a life... You don't see that Swāmījī doesn't see what you are doing, so this is different. Anyhow, this meditation, which we will do in many steps—do not think I will give you these techniques all at once today. Is everyone ready with washed hands and washed mouth and waiting? Is it that easy? Your Master is not one who can say, "Here is everything." It will be given piece by piece. But this technique, this meditation, will help you a lot. You will get it in many different pieces because you cannot practice for so long, sitting for one, two, or three hours. It will be in a short period of time. So technical and theoretical things are different. Practical things are different—to be with, to see.
