Purify or suffer

A spiritual discourse on the five layers of being (kośas), compassion (dayā), and cultural values.

"The roots or the base of the dharma is the mercy." "If you protect the dharma, dharma will protect you."

A spiritual teacher delivers a satsang from an ashram in India, explaining the five sheaths covering the soul, from the physical body to the causal body. He emphasizes that true dharma is rooted in universal compassion for all creatures, critiques the loss of traditional respect and blessings in modern culture, and illustrates the power of praṇām (reverential salutation) through a story about a child whose life was extended by accumulated blessings.

Oṁ Śreman Na Dīpan, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī, salutation to the cosmic light, adoration and sāṣṭāṅg daṇḍavat to our beloved Gurudev, Śrī Devpurījī, Alakpurījī, Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī, and our Sat Gurudev. Many blessings to all international bhaktas in Vienna, Austria, in Gurujī's ashram you are watching now, in Sydney, all Australians, dear bhaktas in Croatia, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czech, Slovak, Germany and so on, as well as Canada and America. The blessing is coming to you from the Holy Land, India, from the Holy Place, Om Śrī Viśwa Gurudev Āśram, Jaipur, Śyāmnagar. Our theme is about the kośas, the different layers of being over the ātmā. That Ātmā, which we would like to get realization of, is covered by five different layers: Annamaya Kośa, the body of nourishment, the physical body; Prāṇamaya Kośa, the energy body; Manomaya Kośa, the mental body; Vijñānamaya Kośa, the intellect or the knowledge—it means that kind of knowledge, our buddhi. Buddhi, which is also working and known as antaḥkaraṇa, manabuddhi, citta, ahaṁkāra. And Ānandamaya Kośa means the causal body, the cause of everything. You have heard about Annamaya Kośa in our International Centre, Om Viśvadīp Gurukul, Jadan, Rajasthan, Bali. You have heard about the physical body, how the physical body is created and how to keep this physical body healthy and long. This body is created out of five elements: ether, fire, air, water, and earth. The body of other creatures on this planet is also created out of these five elements. In this creation, the creator has created 8.4 million different creatures, which are divided into four parts. Three parts: Jalchar, Thalchar, and Nabchar—the creatures in the water, on the earth, and in the space. Whatever the creator has created, it has its meaning. Nothing is created on this planet which is useless. We, the human beings, are very selfish. We think if it is only useful for the humans, then it is okay, otherwise not. But you are not the only one creature on this planet. There are 8.4 million minus one, and this is human. What about others? Therefore, the Ṛṣis of the Holy Land, India, say, "Sarve Bhavantu Sukhina," all should be happy. What means "Sarve Bhavantu Sukhina"? Did they mean only humans? No. All, every living entity on this planet should be happy. This is the teaching of the ṛṣis, great sages, great incarnations, and great holy masters or incarnations, like Ālak Purījī, Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī, and thousands and millions of other holy saints throughout all of India. In their feelings, it is said, you have to create, awake the mercy in your heart, Dayā. Great Sage Tulsidās said, "The roots or the base of the dharma is the mercy." Now this dayā is not only towards the humans, but towards all creatures, and that's why in Sanātana Dharma and in Hindu Dharma, all who follow this Hindu Dharma, and you can only be a real Hindu if you have mercy in your heart. You will not eat killed animals. You will not eat even living animals. You will not let animals be killed for your food. Dayā, prāṇī mātrā par dayā, mercy, compassion towards every creature. Or pāpa mūla abhimān, the roots of the sins is the ego. Proudness, the proudness of your age, proudness of your beauty, proudness of your caste or the nation, proudness of your wealth, proudness of your position, social position, and proudness of being a special, greater—this all creates the ego. And when the ego takes over, then the mercy, humbleness is gone. You lost in your heart the love. If you think dayā is only towards the humans, then you are mistaken. Unfortunately, nowadays, even humans have no mercy towards humans. Such people, how are they going to create mercy in their heart? Therefore, in Hinduism, in Vedānta teaching, in the Vedic culture, in the ancient tradition and culture, always have been first, mercy towards all living beings. Ātmā so pramātmā. Ātmā is the pramātmā. The ātmā, your divine self, is the universal self. Sabhi prāṇī merī ātmā hai, all creatures are myself, my ātmā. Therefore, if I do anything to any creature, it means I am doing it to myself. Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī said, love each and every creature, if not more, then at least that much, as much as you love yourself. If there is no dayā, if there is no mercy, then your heart is blocked. Your heart becomes hard like a stone. And your annamaya kośa as well as your prāṇamaya kośa are polluted. Therefore, the first step for the human is this: humans should never think that I am only alone on this planet. Other animals and vegetation are just for my use. This is the biggest mistake a human can do. Human is created as a protector to protect the entire planet, to protect every creature, to protect the vegetation. Protect the ocean, the rivers, and the environment. Nowadays, we are suffering from climate changes, the earth warming. Why does this happen? Because of the ego and greediness of the human. This earth is not polluted by other creatures. These animals or other creatures are not the cause of climate change, but humans are. Human desires, human longing, human ego, human pride, human selfishness are beyond limitation. And that's why the planet is suffering. The purpose of human life, as a protector on this planet, is to follow and protect the dharma. Dharma means the ethical principles. Dharma means the real duty, obligation towards the entire planet, towards every creature, your family, and our fellow beings or fellow persons. After that, when you follow the dharma, it is said, "Dharma rakṣata rakṣata." If you protect the dharma, dharma will protect you. If you will not protect your dharma, the dharma will not protect you. Parents. Nowadays, many, many parents are unhappy. The parents did their best to educate their children. They sent them to school, college, and university. After all this, those children have no respect for their parents. This is not a mistake of the children; it is a mistake of the parents. Because the parents are not able to educate their children, they are not able to follow the principles or saṃskāras. Saṃskāro se saṃskṛti banti hai, aur saṃskṛti se deś kī śobhā badhtī hai. This deśa kī sanskṛti, jo ki pūre viśva mein mānī jātī hai, Bhārata kī. The saṃskṛti, the culture of India. Culture is created out of that education, or the way you educate your children. Therefore, saṃskāra, saṃskṛti. Dharma. Parents need not fulfill their dharma. It is said that during the Vedic period, and before 30 years, 40 years, 50 years, 60 years—not long ago, only a few decades—first, it was taught to the children when they went to school to know and say, "Mother will bless her child when the child will bow down and touch the feet of the parents." The Indian Sanskritī, Indian culture said, for you, the first God is your mother. And it is the mother's duty to educate you in such a way that you can become a self-realized one. Whenever you will say, "Bow down," your mother will say, "I bless you, my child. I wish you a very happy day. I pray to God that God will protect you. Nothing will happen to you, my child. There should be no accidents, my child. You will learn a lot of wisdom, and may God protect you and grant you a safe journey back home." These are the blessings of our parents. But nowadays, unfortunately, you said bye-bye. And what parents will say also, "Bye-bye, goodbye. You go," that's all. In bye-bye, there is no blessing. You understand me? If you say goodbye, goodbye. See you later, alligator. For a while, all right, crocodile. What is this all? In bye-bye, there is no blessing. And in the hollow, there is also no blessing. If you say to someone, "Hi," according to the spiritual tradition, "hi" is said when someone has died in your family. Then you say, "Oh God, hi." Uske ghar mein hi paḍegī. Koī mar gayā. Hi and bye. Aur tum chale, wo chala jaye. Bas itnā hī hai. So in "hello," "hi," and "goodbye," there is no blessing, there is no good wishes. But it is said, "Namaste." Then someone will think over and give you a blessing. "I bless you, my child." The elderly persons will always say, when you say "Namaste," they will say, "Sadā Sukhī Raho Baccā. Beta, sadā sukhī raho." Ever be happy. Ever be comfortable. And when you go, also you say, "Namaste" or "Praṇām." When you say "Pranām," they have to bless you. If you say "Pranām," the other will not say goodbye to you. And if others say goodbye, then this person is an uneducated person, my dear. Education is not a school education. This is just intellectual knowledge. It's a picture. On the picture, you cannot eat. You see a beautiful picture of the horse, but you cannot ride the horse. But reality, if you have a horse in your farmhouse, you can ride that horse, but not the picture. So, real education is coming from the parents. And to these people, you must bow down and say praṇām, touch their feet, and they will bless you. Yesterday, one Swāmījī told a beautiful story, and this story was long, long ago, at the time of perhaps the Satyuga or Dvāparayuga. There was a brāhmaṇa, a learned person, very wise, who had the knowledge of many spiritualities and śāstras, but only intellectual knowledge. There are two kinds of knowledge. One is called Aparāvidyā, and the second is called Parāvidyā. What we learn in this saṃsāra is aparāvidyā. But what you learn with your master, with your parents, if your parents are spiritual. But if the parents are like nowadays, today, in India, they tell the children, "Hi, hi, bye, bye, papa, mami." They lost this Devanāgarī script, they lost the Sanskrit language, which is called Devabhāṣā. Each word of this Sanskrit has such a divine meaning, even an angry word, you know. Even if you are angry, in Sanskrit language, we'll tell something; it has a lesson inside, a good lesson. But unfortunately, the man has lost, they are losing this, they call it an old language, a dead language. Latin, how many people in the world know the Latin language? How many can speak and give the lecture? Very few. Or the old Greek language. What a great language it was. Now it is very hard to find someone who can read the old Greek and speak in the Greek language, that old Greek language. Therefore, Sanskrit, Hindi is a dialect of Sanskrit. But nowadays, the Hindi language is more or less manipulated in different ways. Saṁskār parents dā dāite haiṁ, vaha mātā pitā jo apne santān ko do śabd nahīṁ sikhā pā rahe haiṁ, ki betā pitā kaho, aur mātā kaho. Ek hotā hai paramātmā, ek hotā hai ātmā, aur ek jīvātmā. Dusarā dharmātmā, aur last hai pāpātmā. Pāpātmā means that pāpātmā. Have no place even in hell. In Sanskrit, that's called pāpa, pāpātmā. It is said, yesterday, I had a lecture in a school in Sikar district, village Dhingpur, near Kailash Ashram. And there were about 1,500 or 2,000 students, from the primary school till the 12th class high school. I was so much surprised that 98% of these children, or those children, were not able to sing "Tvameva Māta Pitā." They did not know that it is a Kali Yuga. The children, villagers from small farmhouses, they are coming, begin to say now, "Papa and Mummy, you see how the Indian culture is going down. You cannot have blessing when you say, 'Papa, bye bye.' There's no blessing." So the ṛṣi, he was great landed one became old but had no children. After his old age, I don't know how old he was because I have no evidence from him, he got one son. Can you imagine how happy that old man and his wife was? But the father of the child who was a great astrologer made the horoscope of that child very clearly. The horoscope showed that after seven years of life, the child will die; the child will pass away. The parents were very unhappy; the parents were sad. One day, one sādhu came, one mahātmā. And that man made a praṇām. And this man asked this pandit, Panditjī, why are you so unhappy? Āp kyō itne udās ho, panditjī? Bahut vidvān, paṇḍit. Uske ek lāḍkā huā abrad avasthā mein, ek hī bachchā. Usne unka kuṇḍalinī manāyā. Well, he said to Mahātma jī, we are unhappy, very sad because after seven years of age, the child will pass away, will die. What did Mahātma say? Can you guess? Mahātmājī said, "Teach your child one thing." What? Every day, morning, evening, and at lunchtime, he should make praṇām to you, to mother and father. He should make praṇām to the teachers. He should make praṇām to all people who are elderly persons, and he should make the praṇām to sādhus. Now, if someone makes a praṇām to you, then you should say, "Long live. God bless you with long life, healthy life, happy life." If you make praṇām, you say, "Bye bye, dhanyavād, om tat sat." Bākī sab gap, sab chale jāo, chup chup. Now the child begins to make praṇām, and we in India say, "Chiranjīvī ho," when he's a small child, long live. Everyone is blessing him: "Chiranjeevo," long life, good life, healthy life, happy life, spiritual life, divine life. Now, so many blessings. Here is now the example, a proof. The blessing helps. After seven years, time came to die, but he said, "Never bye-bye." So he cannot die, because he said, "Praṇām Gurudev. Pranāma Māta Śrī. Pranāma Pitā Śrī." Blessing miltā hai. The king of death, Yama. Yamarāja āte hai. Yama came riding on the buffalo, the water buffalo. The carrier or the chariot of Yama is the buffalo. Jam aata toh kis mein bairta hai? Baisa pe. Baisa kai na? Angrejī me baisa ko kyā kate? Buffalo. Ab jo hai, wo baisa pe baiṭh kar ke yam āyā huā hai. That time, that young boy was making abhiṣek. Mahā mṛtyu jaya mantra. That Mahātmā taught that he should chant Mahā mṛtyu jaya mantra and make the praṇāms. He was doing abhiseka to Lord Śiva. Śiva, in these minutes, what happens? Yama is coming. Now, where is Shiva's temple? Where is the Shiva Liṅgam? And where the abhiṣek is going on, death cannot come, because this is the protection, kavach, yes, rakṣākavach. Yama is standing there, and his buffalo is tired. The buffalo is doing so, and Yama said, "Wait, wait." Well, Bhakta was looking to Yama and he said, "Shivjī, Lord Śiva, your devotee is a victim of the Yama." Then why am I doing this pūjā? Śiva said, "My child, don't be worried." Shiva took his triśūla and ran behind Yama. Yama's buffalo was flying. Yama went to Brahmā and said to Brahmā, "Lord, you wrought in his destiny. Will kill me. Now you see the Trishur is coming behind me and will kill me. Brahma, you gave him seven years of life, and you sent me there to bring him. If Yama will die, then all will become immortal here. That will be the traffic jam." Bhagavān, Brahmā, Brahmājī said, "Yes. My words, my decisions should be followed and are true, but I cannot do anything against so many millions of blessings. Pranām, Pranām, Pranām. How many blessings come, my God? Collect the blessings. So what to do?" Brahmā said. "Write for seven days of Brahma, seven kalpas, millions of years, so they correct it. Not seven years, but this is seven years of Brahma, and he is still there, whose ṛṣi's name is Martandṛṣi." This is the story of Martandṛṣi. You should read the Purāṇas. What is written in the Purāṇas are beautiful stories of the great saints, incarnations, and the ṛṣis. Therefore, the bye-bye blessing is not there. Praṇām, blessing is there. Mātṛ devo bhava, mā ko pranām karke jāo, ghar se jāte ho to. Pitṛ devobhava, pitṛ ko praṇām karke jāo. When you go from the home, then make praṇām to your father. After that, ācārya devobhāva. Ācārya means your school teacher or professor. Also, you should go and make praṇām. Ācārya Devobhāva and Ṛṣi, Ṛṣi Devobhāva, jo ki hamāre gurujana hote hai. Guru Devobhāva. Mātṛ Ṛṇ, Pitṛ Ṛṇ, Deva Ṛṇ, Ṛṣi Ṛṇ or Ācārya Ṛṇ. When you get blessings from these five, you are safe. You have the bulletproof jacket on your body. What bulletproof jacket on your body? No one can do anything to you, and you will get śakti. You will get the śakti, and your mind will have a strong energy and power. Therefore, first purify your nourishment. Dayā dharm kā mūl hai, pāp mūl abhimān. Tulsī dayāṁ chhoḍiye jab lakṣ ghaṭme prāṇ. Siyāvar Rāmchandra pāvan sūtā Hanumān kī. Bolo bhai sāv santān kī jai. Therefore, the roots of the dharma is the mercy, and the roots of the sins is ego, the proudness: "I am myself. I don't like this." Who are used to say "I"? How? What are you in the entire universe? You are a very tiny micro, micro-bacteria. Say what? Yes? Compared to the Ananta Brahman, Chauda Lok, Ikiso Brahman, the 2100 universes, the solar systems, and the fourteen worlds—seven worlds below and seven above. After that, it is so Brahman. When you all look at this, our entire planet is a little like a sand in your salad. A small corn in your salad, entire planet. So what we are, we are not even visible. And the God, the Lord, he is the Lord of the entire universe. Therefore, O human, O man, do not make the mistake and do not say that you are only a creature on this planet. Mercy towards all, ahimsa paramo dharma. The highest principle is ahimsa. Even don't think bad. If you think bad, that will come to you. Your mind is the biggest power in your body, and suddenly your mind is disturbed. "I don't like," yes, the whole night. You will not like yourself to your ego. Surrendering is the best. The great one can forgive. The great one can understand. Therefore, Tulsī Dājī said, "Do not give up your tolerance and mercy from your heart as long as there is life in your heart." After, you don't know what will happen through your body. Anamaya Kośa, the body of nourishment, this is the main temple of your divine self. Therefore, do not take it too easy. You must know that you have a very big, very great spirit, the light of your ātmā. But you have one dharma and one mission in your life. First is to be a protector. Second, follow the ethical principles, the dharma. And third, self-realization, God realization, in order to walk out from the circle of rebirth and death, which makes 4.8.4 millions different creatures included, jalchar, thalchar, and nabchar. You must have protection from this. It is your mantra, your meditation, and your prayers; these are the protections against these three forces: Jalchar, Thalchar, and Nabchar. In modern times, the army system is also three: Navy, Ground Force, and Air Force. So, also we have a protection against the water tattva, the water element, the earth element, and the space element. Through the practice of yoga and daily life, through the practice of different kriyās, and through the practice of self-discipline, observe your mind, observe yourself. Do not fall into mistakes and emotionality. And don't create your own power and stories in your mind, through which you will be suffering forever and ever. This life is nothing. This life is very temporary, that's all. Second, chala jayenge, chara chari ka khela, jag mein do din ka hai mela. Koi chala gaya, koi chala jayega, koi ghaṭrī bandh khaḍā, akelā. Yeh chara chari kā melā. Who knows who will be the first one from us to go away from this world. Kya jayega saath mein? Nothing but only your karmas. What will go with you? Nothing. Only your karmas, your thoughts, and your ego: jealousy, anger, complexes, and all of this. Therefore, prāṇa maya kośa, prāṇa maya kośa, mano maya kośa, vijñāna maya kośa, and ānanda maya kośa. As long as you cannot purify these five layers of being, you suffer. Again, go with that suffering. With little, little things, don't create in your mind troubles. Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Vajman Nārāyaṇa, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Śrīman Bhagavān Kī Jai.
