Yoga is a science of the universe

A spiritual discourse on the essence of yoga, karma, and human life.

"Yoga is the uniting principle, the union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness."

"Action is in your hands, in your decision. But the result is not in your hands... That will become my destiny."

Swami Maheshwarananda delivers a comprehensive talk, weaving together cosmology, scripture, and parable to explain yoga as the universal balancing principle. He discusses the nature of creation, the human condition within the cycle of birth and death, and the law of karma. The talk expands to cover practical yoga asanas derived from nature, the importance of vegetarianism, and the essential principles of tolerance, respect, and understanding as a path to world peace and Self-realization.

Many questions arise in our minds concerning yoga, the mystery of the universe, the mystery of creation, the mystery of human life, destiny, karma, reincarnation, liberation, Self-realization, God-realization, environmental protection, world peace, and more. Is there a solution? Is there a way? Is there an explanation? In this modern age, there are many scientists and much research underway, and they explain everything according to their science. I am not a scientist; I did not study all this. Yet, sitting before you, one wonder remains: I am not nervous, but I must consider what I will speak of today. That is the science of the universe: yoga. Thus, there is what is called dharma and vijñāna—the science and the reality, or what we call realism. Where there is truth, there is dharma. Where there are elements, there is science. And we are in between. Here is just a glimpse about yoga. What is yoga? According to all those holy saints who achieved what we call cosmic or higher consciousness, and who left their testimony for us in the form of scriptures—which we too can realize if we follow in their footsteps—here is where we begin. First, of course, is the universe: empty space without borders, endless. We do not know where the beginning is or where the end is. That space is known as the body of the Mother, and that is called the Cosmic Mother. The Upaniṣad says, "The first god is the mother," and that is that entire endless union. The second is called Hiraṇya Garbha, the golden embryo, and that golden embryo is known as the universal consciousness. So we have space and consciousness. Now, between space and consciousness, there is another principle, another power, which balances these two, and that is called yoga. I cannot tell you how old it is; I am still searching for where it began. Once a man was walking near the coast, a place called Porta Rosa. There sat a statue made of salt, and upon it was written: "Can you answer my question?" Many looked and walked away; many spoke to that statue made of salt. It happened that one wise person also came near. The statue asked him, "Can you answer my question?" He said, "Yes, what is your question?" "Can you tell me how deep and big this ocean is?" "Well, that is very hard to tell. The best is that you experience it yourself. Dive into the ocean and find out how deep it is." And that statue jumped into the ocean. To this day, it has not come out. And that is why the ocean is salty. So, who is going to know how the entire universe is? You have to dive into it, or jump into it, and you will melt in it. You will not be there anymore, but only Satya, the truth, God, the universe, will be. When I was there, he was not here. And now he is here, but I am not there. Because the street of love is so narrow, two cannot walk together. Two have to become one, and that is called yoga. So it is the uniting principle, the union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness. That is our origin. Thus, yoga is a balancing, harmonizing, and uniting principle. Literally, yoga means union, and that is what we need very much in this world, which is full of conflicts. We have to balance, harmonize, and unite. Within these three—the space, consciousness, and that uniting energy—there is another tendency, and that is called kriyā-śakti: the power to do something, awakening. So, in that endless universe, within that cosmic consciousness, within what we call the divine will, the Veda says, "I am one, and I will multiply." It is He who is holding everything within Him. And it is He who will exhale. It is He who will exhale, and it is He who will again inhale. "Eko haṁ bahusyāmi"—I will multiply. So the first was sound, resonance. And that yogī is declared as Oṁ. And it is that resonance which was the first manifestation in this universe. So the Vedas say, "The form of the Supreme, God, what you are searching for—if you want to know how He is, then it is that resonance." Nāda. And that nāda is in each and every atom in our body and outside also. And it is that resonance which unites, it is that resonance which is balancing, it is that resonance which is dividing. And from that, it is said, ananta brahmāṇḍa śāstra sūrya—endless universes and thousands of solar systems were created out of that resonance. So, dear brothers and sisters, that is a glimpse, our definition of yoga. What is yoga? How old is yoga? Is it a religion? Is it a philosophy? I do not know what it is now. I told you; now you must decide what it is. We come to our beautiful planet. How many millions or billions of years has this planet already been here? I cannot tell you because I am not so old, and definitely the planet is much older than me. This planet is known as Mṛtyu Loka—the world of death. Death and birth are on this planet. The life which is manifested on this planet by that divine consciousness, or what you may call the creator, consists of 8.4 million different creatures. Mankind is slowly divided into three categories: jalchar, thalchar, and nabchar. And these all make 8.4 million. Out of all these 8.4 million, only one is the human. That we call the human. It does not matter from which part of the world one comes, which color, which culture, which religion, which figure, how smaller, taller, this side or that side. Human is human. Animal is animal. Now, the human has a very powerful tool, and that is called intellect. Human intellect can be trained to be endless; it needs education. And it is that education which brings humans to that particular direction of life. It is not that from one day to another the planet is created. Definitely, there are many processes and many systems and many things. Why birth and death on this planet? Because this planet is that spot in the universe where His multiplying waves again come to oneness. So this planet is the door again to become one. It is that channel where the inhalation will take place; it is a vacuum. But life is created again in different systems. If they will come on this planet, they will come and come and come; nobody will go. Therefore, they discussed and had a dialogue or consultations with one mighty power in this universe, and that is called Yamarāja. Yama means death, the king of death. So that death will be. But how? How will they die? So they gave the three principles to life: to be born, to grow, and to die, either through age and illnesses or some different way. But how will they all die? They will not get old. They must have some principle. They spoke with the fire element, and fire said, "I will enter the creations as hunger." All will become very hungry. Then they said, "But what will they eat?" So they spoke with another person and told him, "Go to Yamarāja, to death. He should tell how it should happen." "Jīva jīva bhakṣate." It is said in the Vedas: "Jīva jīva bhakṣate." Life will eat life. Dharmarāja said, "The king of justice, that is terrible, horrible." Death says, "King of the dead." Yes, that is how they will create bad karma. So they will again turn back, so that it is not easy to come again to the origin. A few days ago, someone told me, "Swāmījī, I saw you on YouTube." I said, "What is YouTube? I know many tubes." But this YouTube, first time on the computer. Aha, I came back. And so is the YouTube? Is the imagination from that recycling process, the cosmic recycling process, coming and going? You know, do you believe in the recycling process or not? Do you believe? Only four. Thank you. So if we believe in recycling, then where is the problem to believe in reincarnation? Reincarnation is recycling. Belief does not change. Truth cannot be changed, and evidence will not die. So the law of karmas was created. Now, karma means action. I am talking now; I am creating my karma. How must I talk, good or bad? I am drinking water; I am doing karma. I am eating; I am doing karma. This is called nitya karma—everyday necessary action. Then there are big karmas, other karmas. So it does not matter which kind of karma I do; there is an impression or a reflection on my consciousness. I am pure consciousness. I am cosmic consciousness. But in this material, mūrti, loka, I got this pollution, the reflections. From the universal phenomenon, I became an individual phenomenon. And I am creating more phenomena out of me. So the soul is individual. Ātmā, the Self, is universal. Karma is making the soul stronger. And positive thinking, positive energy, prayer, meditation, or whatever you call this, is liberating the soul into the Ātmā. Where there is action, there is a reaction. And where there is a reaction, there will be action. Action, reaction, action, reaction—we do not know where we are now. Are we reacting or acting? Whatever we do through our body, through our mind, through our words, through our social position, or through the power of our wealth, this will be counted as our karma. So the reaction, or the fruits, or the result of our action, is called destiny. Action is in your hands, in your decision. But the result is not in your hands. I have a stone. If I want, I can keep it. Or if I want, I can throw it. And when I throw the stone and I find that you are sitting in front of me, I will scream, "No, I do not want to do this!" Still, I cannot run behind and catch that stone. The stone was thrown with all of my energy. It will target, and it will hit that point. That will become my destiny. So we have to pay back our destiny. Therefore, it is said, life will eat life. But humans have that intellect to understand the pain of death, pain or suffering, torturings, and many things. We and other creatures—maybe they are not afraid of dying, but of the process of dying. Therefore, for humans, declared by those holy saints: "O man, you should not kill. Thou shalt not kill." Nourish with the seeds, fruits, milk, and honey. Seeds means the nuts and grains, and vegetables means the fruits. Even do not destroy the plant. And so the philosophy of the vegetarian life is not only concentrated on healthy or not healthy, but to protect thyself from this karma. So the action will get reactions, and that will be followed in the future life too. After this, all was the question: how to come out? Though we have a very good intellect, we are still human. We are mortal beings here in this world, and we have our weaknesses or our desires, and we are not perfect ones. Even heaven has got a hole somewhere to run away, so God may forgive us for what we did wrong. And that is, it is called: love unites, and cruelty, or hate, or ignorance divides. And what is that love? This is what all spiritual cultures, every religion, is preaching. These are yoga or yogic principles. Even the Vedas, which are one of the oldest scriptures, talk about yoga. Two things: God, there is only one God. No name, no form. Only universal one, that is all. What you call in Christianity, Holy Father, only God, that is all. But others are incarnation or the manifestation of that supreme power. And therefore, that is only that one. Believe, prayer, devotion—that means love. Be kind, be good, and meditate. Who am I? In the Bhagavad Gītā, Kṛṣṇa said, "I live in every creature, and all are my Self." And the great Śaṅkarācārya said: Who am I? From where do I come? And what is the purpose of my coming, and where will I go? All this can be realized through the human body. So humans are protectors, not distractors. Love all God's creatures. That is love to God. Well, so, now this human life is given. Should we do something or not? Okay, we begin with yoga. How many years will it take? Now, Slovenians have been practicing yoga for 20 years. Still, they did not get that light. So, is that true, or is it only words? Yes, it is true, but there are a lot of karmas which we have to work out. But my life is very short. Yes, then try to prolong your life. How? Through two things: nourishment and movement. Healthy nourishment and balanced movement. And where there is movement, there is an awakening of the energy. And so, my dear brothers and sisters, yoga exercises developed. Yoga postures are taken from nature. One posture is called Bhujaṅgāsana. Bhujaṅg is a cobra. Sometimes, the cobra raises its head up. Normally they do not do this. Why is he doing this? Is he scared or angry? Frightened, then he stands up and the pressure of his posture goes to his Svādhiṣṭhāna cakra. And Svādhiṣṭhāna cakra, which deals with anger, fear, and hate. When you do this posture, automatically your anger will calm down. If you are nervous, or angry, or violent, frightened—full of emotion. Emotions have many forms. But emotion means you are in motion. That motion is so strong that you cannot help yourself. And so we have to take extra help. So I often tell my disciples, I tell you, dear ladies, when your husband comes home and he is angry, put him in Bhujaṅgāsana. Say, darling, after five minutes, I will talk with you. You will see after five minutes, it is completely different. So, these cakras in the body—you can read in the, you have one in Slovenian language, The Hidden Powers in Humans—which regulate energy in our body in a positive way. Or a cat pose: when after a long time sitting, a cat gets up. A cat is stretching and making its back up. The most beautiful, flexible back has a cat. So from the cat we took this posture called billy pose or Marjaryāsana. Billy is Hindi, Marjaryā is Sanskrit. So all movements are imitation from nature, and we are not separate from nature. According to nature, there is no difference between the tree and our Self. The tree lives more naturally, and we live more unnaturally. That is the difference. So movements developed, and healthy food. That time, there was no question of this old pesticide. So nobody spoke about organic food. This organic consciousness awoke in us since we humans began in the last seven or eight decades. Because humans become greedy to produce more and more and more, and that is the problem. So eating less, fresh, and healthy food will make your life long. And you can achieve your aim. Then the breath, this we call prāṇāyāma. When we were born, what did we do first? We inhaled. And what will we do last in this life? Exhale, and we will not be able to inhale. So it is a long breath from birth till death. It is between only the waves. From one soul to another soul, ocean. Between are only waves. Breath exercises harmonize all body systems and supply more oxygen. It keeps our body healthy. Our lungs keep our respiratory system strong, as well as our digestive and circulatory systems. Then comes meditation or concentration, which tranquilizes our thoughts. So this is actually what we call yoga. Meanwhile, many, many yogīs made research work. Every yoga teacher has different experiences and a different way of explaining. One here came here from what you call the Umag. Another one came from Novgorica. The third one came from Ljubljana. Now, all three have different experiences on the way. But the main point is here, Porta Rosa. We are here. So, every road will lead you to Porta Rosa. So, every yogī has different experiences. And they are right; they are not wrong. So, slowly, slowly, people try to modify the yoga. And in our system, we call it yoga in daily life. And so, how I gave a name, "Yoga for Everyday Life." And in this system, it is for everyone, young, old, ill, or healthy. Mladega, starega, zdravega ali bolanega—and very carefully designed. In je zelo pozorno narejen—and systematically. And, of course, yoga and daily life have many different projects. So there is a spirituality in it. There is humanitarianism. There is also veterinarian care. You saw in this film: beautiful calves. They are not for selling and eating. I have got nearly 500 cows in India. And they are such lovely animals. And babies, they are so lovely, so sweet. My cows are so happy and relaxed. You saw the one eye of the cow? And they give milk and fertilizer for the fields. They are part of our life. So our organization takes care of animals. We have beautiful horses, dogs, and birds. In the center, which you saw, the garden is something unique. That is the beauty of life. Love unites. Helping hands have more value than just folded hands. Now, in this world, there is a lot of restlessness and conflict. And so, with my very limited energy, I am trying in this world to bring the message of peace through many conferences, tolerance in religions. Religions should not fight each other. That is one of the biggest problems. You can bring the terrorist on this stage to sit and negotiate, but it is very hard to bring all the head leaders of the religions. That is a problem. That is a problem. Though I am a very religious person. And that is why slowly, slowly, the humans go away from religion. And then it is abused by politicians. And that is, when you create one party for a special caste or religion, then you are discriminating against others. Let us create here in Slovenia a Hindu party, a Muslim party, and a Buddhist party. What will you choose now, and the Christian party? Reality will come very front very soon. The emotional feeling in humans is very strong. And that lay hidden in humans as revenge. The blood is boiling in the fire of revenge. You see how Yugoslavia is nicely divided. What was the reason? Some conflict that we are not able to cope with together. So we try to get tolerance among religions and respect for every culture. Every culture is a very good culture, either from Africa, South America, Japan, China, India, or Europe. Every culture is a good culture, but someone said the best culture is agriculture, that we should take care very much, and agriculture is disbalanced and that. This is how the whole globe is suffering. Global warming, climate changes. One of the scientists, Timmy Achimovic, attended the World Peace Conference in Wellington, New Zealand with me once. And where is, in simple words? He opened everyone's eyes. He said, "Global climate change was always." You know, yesterday was beautiful, sun shining. And now it is raining; it is climate change. So, it is the nature of the climate to change, but what we give some cause, reason why it is changing, that is bad. So, respect to every culture. And third point: understand. Understand the problems of others. Understand the problems of your wife, your husband, parents, children, neighbors, the village, the society, your country, and other countries. Understand them in order to harmonize. So tolerance, respect, and understanding. Those are very important points, the very important steps toward world peace. And then finally, we need spiritual guidance. It does not matter which kind of car it is; it needs a driver. And so we need that driver, the spiritual leader, the spiritual master. And to check our, what we call, the spiritual lineage, from where the stream is coming. We drink water, but where is the source of this water? So finally, the aim of human life is to realize that cosmic consciousness. First, realize thyself, Self-realization. Nothing will go with us: our money, our position, our relations. Even our body will not go with us. When we leave this body, it is like jumping into an endless dark space without ground. And you cannot come back. In case you come back: evening, in the night, and a knock on your window at home. Open the door. The whole family will be frightened if he comes back. Yesterday we put him under the ground—ghost. Those who love us will be frightened. "Do not open the windows and doors." But do not worry, no one will come back. You see, that is an endless journey. This individual is fluttering on the waves of time. In this endless universe, experiencing pain and pleasure, darkness and light. Nothing will go with us except our destiny. So we shall learn to forgive, learn to respect, love. And prayer that this cosmic light will lead us there. I do believe, and I do pray. I do respect all holy saints, all holy scriptures, and I do wish that all will come to this divine consciousness. Fighting will bring nothing. This earth does not belong to us. This country does not belong to us. It is God's planet, created. We are just tourists, so do not take risks in this tourist life. Just be a good tourist and come back home. So, dear brothers and sisters, there are many, many things in this life. Only the human spirit is able to think and to know. And one very good thing is, we have the freedom to feel and decide in our heart what we want. So yoga is a way of health. Yoga is a way of life. Yoga is a way to positive energy. Yoga is a way to development. Yoga is a way to God. Yoga is something which is very unique. Even if you do not practice postures and breath techniques, you are doing yoga. A mother is cooking with great love for her children—that can be better than yoga. A husband is bringing nice flowers or something for his wife, full of love. What can be better than yoga? Or she is waiting and making some nice food or something with great love. What can be better than this? Or you greet your neighbor with a smile, with good words. You throw a handful of seeds for the birds. So you are doing many good things, I am sure. Just become aware about this. I gave an example in Koper—not Koper, sorry, in Novi Mesto. We have so many everyday lectures. When we were entering Novo Mesto, just on the entrance of the city, there was an accident. An ambulance was there. Doctors and helpers were running to bring this and that to help that person. They were not aware that they are employed and they get money for this, but they were aware how to save the life of this person and help that he will not have pain. The best thing is that you can remove someone's pain. Die we will anyhow, but we do not want to die with the pain. I do not want to live long, having pain in my back and walking like this. Thanks to my doctor, he took a big injection, and there I have no pain. Very good. I went to a doctor like this, and I came while smiling. What can be better karma than this? What a doctor is doing. If you like doctors or you do not like doctors—and I am not only telling this today because our respected mayor is a doctor here, you know. But I think to be a doctor is a very, very good karma. Of course, you have to live also to earn money. But I think mostly doctors who want to study medicine, they were not studying because they would like to earn money, but to help, remove the pain of others. It does not matter how. Life becomes pleasant or easy when there is no pain. At the end, I remember one small joke, and you will say, "Look, this boy—I am not a boy—this man is saying jokes at the end." But something came to my mind. Someone told me this joke long ago in Hungary. There were two friends, very good friends. And one of them was very, very negative towards doctors and towards the medicine—all poison. No medicine. No doctors. So one day he asked his other friend, "Let's go and visit the doctor." The friend was surprised. All the times he is talking against doctors, and now he is going to the doctor. Well, he went to the doctor, the doctor wrote some piece of paper, some medicine, and he went to the chemistry shop. Fred could not understand. First, he did not like doctors, he did not want, and now he went to buy medicine, and he was so against medicine. Then he said, "Let's go for a walk on the coast, Porta Rosa." And they were standing near the water, and the friend took the medicine and threw it in the water. The other friend was looking at him. "Are you normal?" I said, "Why? I am very normal. I do not understand you." "Why? You were so against the doctors, so why did you go to doctors?" "Because the doctor must leave also." "Okay, but then why did you buy the medicine?" "Because the chemistry owner, they must also leave." "Then why did you throw medicine in the water?" "Water, because I also want to live." That was a joke. Thank you. That was from some Hungarian, yes, not my joke. Lead us from unreality to the reality. Lead us from the darkness to the light. And lead us from mortality to immortality. Peace, peace, peace. God bless you all. Thank you, thank you.
