Yoga is far beyond physical

A spiritual discourse on yoga as a universal principle for global consciousness.

Salutations to the Divine Masters, adoration to the Cosmic Light, Lord of our hearts, Omniscient and Omnipresent. In His Divine Presence, good evening, brothers and sisters, all friends who are here for the first time, and people from the media. The city of Banská Bystrica, which I have visited several times, is the heart of Slovakia. Its beauty, its nature, everything is wonderful. I am again happy that through the blessing of the Divine, I am here with you. Welcome, you all here. From the beginning until today, my subject has always been yoga. Often, people think yoga is only physical exercises, breath exercises, and relaxation. These are very preliminary preparation exercises for yoga. Yoga is far beyond this. As I used to say, yoga is that principle which balances the universe and universal consciousness—balancing, harmonizing, and uniting. Definitely, the science of body, mind, consciousness, and soul is yoga. It has been researched and given to humankind by the great sages of India. Every country is a beautiful country. Every culture is a beautiful culture. Where there are humans, there is a culture. Where there is a culture, there is a human. The beauty of human life is that culture which balances human life. On this planet, wherever humans are, they are creating beautiful cultures. But one of the most ancient spiritual traditions in every aspect is called the cradle of culture, India. Not that I am telling you this because I was born in India; my life, I spent more of it here in Czechoslovakia than in India, and I adore this country and culture and people. But nevertheless, it is that spiritual science which, many thousands of years ago, was given to us with great sense. We have to understand the time sphere, or yugas—not these centuries of a hundred years, but the time which brings complete changes into the entire universe. The ṛṣis are speaking from millions of years. It is necessary to translate those ancient scriptures. Out of this entire creation, one being is what we call the human. I have often repeated this, but once more for those who may be here for the first time: the Creator has created on this planet 8.4 million different creatures. All of them carry the light of the Divine, God, the Cosmos, the Universe, or the Cosmic Self. Each Slovakian represents Slovakia, and anything that happens to Slovakians in other countries reflects on Slovakia. You have your foreign ministry and your ambassador; it is their prime duty to support and help the Slovak. Similarly, those saints were known as the ambassadors of the divine, and their duty was to support and protect each and every entity among the 8.4 million different creatures. Only one is human. Humans should never say we are the best and God loves only us. That is the greatest mistake that humans have made in the last few centuries, up until today. Human ego, human greed, and human actions have gone too far in destroying this planet. The consequences have to be suffered by the whole planet, but first by the humans. Through hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods, the most affected are the humans, because it is mostly due to human greed, which tries to destroy this planet. Therefore, humans should never think that they are only the best one, and if we are the best one, then we are not for destruction; we have protection. Humanity has a very valuable, very powerful tool: that's intellect. Human intellect can be educated endlessly. God created humans as protectors, not destroyers. Human intellect—you cannot price it. But unfortunately, one has a good intention, and out of this good intention, someone is abusing and doing bad, creating bad intention. Someone had a good intention to find the atoms, but now some have bad intention to misuse it. Yesterday there was a little news, a kind of documentary, about movements—what they call terrorist movements—but more was about the telephone, what you call the mobile or handy. We all have mobile telephones throughout the world; there are billions. In the beginning, it was very good. It could help us in an emergency. But now it has become a problem. How you can work with your mobile phone and inform the whole world is misused in many things. This has become a powerful tool for smugglers, terrorists, criminals, and so on. There are always two streams in this universe. One is called Devī power, and one is called Āsurī powers. Devic power is divine, positive. Āsurī is negative, destructive. And āsurī power, śakti, has two tools to work: human intellect and illnesses. These two are now the most dangerous things in this world. You heard just last week what happened. One father, one man killed his grandfather, his mother, his wife, his daughter—three generations. He was a beautiful, very intelligent young man, healthy. What was in his mind? Which force was there? A small girl, maybe six, seven, or ten years old. Father loved her so much. Can you imagine? Father comes with a big kind of axe, and she comes and says, "Hello, Father," and he chops her head into two parts. The wife also, the mother also, the grandfather also. So, let's say for some seconds or one minute, we shall pray for those victims. Close your eyes, and in your own language, in your own belief, pray for them. Thank you. This was an example. We don't know what's going on in someone's mind. Within 12 months, how many distractions and disasters happen in this world? A few months ago, hundreds, or maybe thousands, of monks were killed. You know what happened in China. Now, the earthquake, the flood. Every day, bombs are exploded. We need security. We need a peaceful world. During the Second World War, in these mountains of Slovakia, it was Christmas time. In the night, a wounded soldier was lying in the snow on Christmas Eve, completely helpless. Someone told me that he was singing for help to God. And that you have made, I think, also in your national hymn, "Gade Domum Moi"—"Where is my house?" That peaceful house. There is one man in the middle of the ocean on a boat, singing to the Divine Mother: "O Mother, O Mother, where is the peaceful shore? Where is the peaceful shore, the land? I have to go to the far distance. The black clouds, thundering, lightning, heavy waves, darkness, and my boat is sinking in the ocean. O Mother, tell me, where is the peaceful shore?" This is the situation now in the whole world. There are many conflicts in this world. There are many so-called racists. That is not good. We don't know what's going on in the minds of the people. Many yugas ago—Satya Yuga, Tretā Yuga, Dvāpara Yuga—and now, Kali Yuga. Kali Yuga is a dark time, an iron time. It is said in Kali Yuga, now is the power of the dark energies. They are also abusing through fanaticism, through negative beliefs. So the ṛṣis said, many yugas ago, to develop love in humans. There was a time humans were killing humans and eating also. Humans were living nearly like animals. It took time to civilize. Love, help, kindness, compassion, mercy, understanding, prayer, belief, knowing there is sin and there are good things, knowing there is a saviour in this world who can liberate us—these were the principles of yoga given by the ṛṣis. At that time, none of the religions we know nowadays by name existed. The oldest religion, Hinduism, also was not there by the name Hinduism. Only one: Yoga. Sanātana Dharma. The principle: do good, get good; do bad, face bad. Remove the conflicts in society, in your mind. Help. You experienced, just about two decades ago, that you couldn't trust your wife. You couldn't trust your best friend, your colleagues, because maybe he or she is a spy. I need not tell this. But the question is this: is the time gone? Yes, time is changing, but the situation is still the same. How could what happened with the Romans in Italy happen in this time? Just take an example. Why? We think we are the best, and they are the bad, but these are the conflicts. This world is struggling in the conflicts. Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, it doesn't matter which belief we have. God is one, not two gods. Others are what we call the incarnation, divine powers. I pray to the same God to whom you also pray. And you also pray to the same God to whom I pray. I belong to the same divine light to which you belong. But we have a conflict in society that we should remove. Never think that you can't do anything. Yes, you can do. You are capable. The United Nations is saying that every voice will be counted and will be heard. So, do something good in your life, not only for your family and friends and country. That's everyone doing; everyone is doing good for their family, friends, and supporting their country. But we shall take an aim as a global consciousness, that we are a global family. Give them a chance. So, what? How many good things did you do today? How many times were you angry today? How many times were you angry while driving a car here? How many times do you try, with ego, to take over and say, "My God, this stupid does not know how to drive! He drives so slow!" You know what's happening, what's going on in us? At the present time, spirituality is there where you develop your understanding and kindness, and give the chance. Someone is driving behind you and making flashing lights, and you try to go quickly. Another one tries to go more quickly, and a deer is crossing the road. You know what's happening, so simply move to the right side and let him or her overtake. Why not? Don't become angry. When you become angry, nervous, and full of ego, then good energy dies from you. Then that Āsurī śakti begins to govern your intellect, your consciousness, your actions. In Kali Yuga, Āsurī śakti is governing the intellect of humans and the illnesses. And positive divine śakti is there where you remove these conflicts from your mind, from your intellect, towards humans, other creatures, and other nations. So if you are praying, if you are meditating, if you help, if you send your love, your support, that you believe there is a God, you pray for forgiveness—what are you doing? This is yoga, not only standing on the head. God gave us legs to stand, not the head. There's one story about Slovakia. There was one disciple from 1975. The place is somewhere here called Žiar. That gentleman, who was about fifty years old at that time, was practicing yoga. After a few years, he may have wanted to be the best yogī, so he made a competition: how many hours he could stand on his head. He stood 30, 40 minutes and became unconscious. He fell down, and his wife called the ambulance. At that time, under the communist system, the ambulance took him to the hospital. He was hospitalized, and after some days, the doctor asked him, "Mister, what have you done?" "So, I was standing on my head for one hour." The doctor said, "Well, now... you should know, for standing, God gave the legs, not the head." So many times, people are overdoing; that's not good. Headstanding is not only the yoga. Sitting in the lotus is not only the yoga, or holding breath for five minutes is not yoga. Yoga is our way of life. Of course, we shall try to make our body healthy. The body has three principles, we call dharma: to be born, to grow, and to die. I remember once in Poprad I gave a lecture for the nurses, the sisters, long ago. That time, my horses were wild. And I said, "I tell you, yoga will keep you ever young. We will be young. My hair will be all the times nice and black." When I look now in the mirror, I remember my ignorance, what I spoke. So sābdīna hotānā eka śamāna. Every day is never equal. Raja ko ranka, ranka ko raja. It is the destiny. It is God who can make a beggar a king, and He can make a king a beggar. Oh man, never have an ego from your knowledge, from your power, your position, and so on. An example, a very clear example: there was a man a few years ago, the whole world was looking to him, a mighty man. He thought, "I am the ruler forever." Saddam Hussein. One day he had to hide himself in a canalization. What commentary will you give to this? It is that destiny, it is that supreme power that can make the king a beggar and a beggar can become a king. So we believe, we trust there is a God. We do believe there are mistakes, and we do believe these mistakes we know in some language are called sin. And we pray to that positive power, or God, to remove this darkness from our destiny and send us the enlightenment of wisdom. So whatever you are doing, do it with love, with the consciousness that your action does not hurt others. If we can't dry the tears, we should not become the cause of tears. So whatever you are doing is yoga. Please be kind to your partner, and both partners together give your love to your children, and be helpful to the neighbors, societies, and animals too. Animals have so much love for you, you can't imagine. When you first fell in love with someone, whenever you saw them, you embraced. How many days, or how many months, or how many years? Well, after some days, you decide to marry. Then you realize that you are going to marry, you become uncertain, and you walk slowly into the church. Why slowly? Because they are uncertain steps. You are happy, you married. Your family is happy that we have one problem less—one child is settled down. But how many years will your husband or wife embrace you quickly when you come home? The husband comes home in the evening and he says, "Ahoy, Anka." And Anka says, "Ahoy, where are you? I have much work to do." Sometimes they don't even speak. But still, continuously, who will hug you is your dog. The dog will jump on you, left and right, dancing for you. Can you feel his love or her love? Your cat comes and moves around your legs, your body. If you feed your birds every day a little bit, the birds are waiting when you come home. They sing for you. This means animals feel love, and they have love for those who love them also. And we humans are capable of giving that love. So spiritual awakening, spiritual consciousness, harmony, balance—this is this kind of love to give all. If we can't think positive, we should not think negative. That is yoga in daily life. Other movements, shoulders or hands, and this and that—that's very good. Still, it doesn't serve our purpose in life. The purpose of life is to become one with God, not only to come to heaven and be closed there. The yogī said, "God, please don't lead me to heaven." It's boring there. Can you imagine, you can't be born anymore and you have no choice. What will you do there? Is there a heaven? Or our imagination. Therefore, not only praying for heaven, but to merge into the oneness of that cosmic light, God. Where there is love, there is unity. And where there is ignorance or hate, there is suffering and separation. This love, we humans understand, is to develop more towards all creatures. Everything in this world needs love, though it is only a material thing. This microphone also needs love. As careful as I will keep it, it will help me more. I must clean it, protect it. Furniture needs love. Everything. Love unites. Love is the beauty of life. And for that love we are born. So you should know, you are the incarnation of love and light. Never feel that you are a sinner. Never feel you can't. It's a way of thinking, that's all. You are the incarnation of love and light—an incarnation with birth. In spiritual language, incarnation, and in worldly language, born. That's it. So, you are born here as love and light. So, whatever you do, don't overdo. Does it mean you must pray? No. If you like to pray, do. If you don't like, don't do it. My work is my worship, and my life is a prayer to thee, O my Lord. What more can I pray? That's it. Whatever you are doing, you are doing very well. I didn't come here to change you, only to make you aware you are doing good. And if in your deeds there is something negative, please understand and reject it. That will make your life successful. Your life is in your hands. Your happiness is in your hands. Love, contentment, happiness—these are the universal principles. And you have that within you. Be sure, no one can make you happy. That which makes you happy today, one day will make you unhappy. But it is you who will make you ever happy. So there is one song of happiness. Anything happens to you, go to your heart and say, "I am bliss." I am that divine blessing of God is with me. I am ever alone, and I am never alone. When I was here, he was not here. Now he's there, but I am here, but I'm not there, because the street of love is so narrow, two cannot walk together. Two has to become one. Therefore, remove the duality: "me" and "he," but only "so hum"—I am that, that I am. So neither money can make you happy, nor a person can make you happy, but it is that love divine within you. So you are incarnation of love and light. I pray to almighty Mahāprabhujī to bless you with good health, harmonious, happy, peaceful life, long life, and spiritual development for realization of the oneness this lifetime. A very nice, good evening.
