Practical spirituality

A spiritual discourse on the essence and practice of yoga.

"Yoga is a balancing, yoga is a harmony, harmonizing, and where there is a harmony, there is a unity. So literally, yoga means union, union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness."

"The ultimate aim of practicing yoga, spirituality, religious practice, is this: to become one with the cosmic Self and not to be an individual one, which is recycled again and again and again."

Swami Avatarpuri addresses an audience in Edinburgh, offering a practical exploration of yoga as the union of individual and cosmic consciousness. He distinguishes between theoretical and experiential knowledge, using the metaphor of a salt statue diving into the ocean to illustrate the need for direct experience of the infinite. He explains the creation of the universe from divine resonance (Nāda), describes the soul as a bundle of karma distinct from the universal Self (Ātmā), and outlines the yogic path of meditation, mantra, and ethical principles like non-violence (Ahiṃsā) to achieve liberation.

Salutations to the cosmic light, the Lord of our hearts, omniscient and omnipresent, in the divine presence of God. A very good evening, dear brothers and sisters. I am very happy to be again in this beautiful city, Edinburgh, where I was some months ago. This city is like an ornamental city; it reminds me of something. And also many faces are here, similar, especially our brother Algar, who invited me last time, the first time here in this city. Well, last time, the subject was about different beliefs, different religions, and different mentalities—what different religions generally say. This time, my coming was concentrated more on the practical part of spirituality: Yoga, and especially the hidden powers in humans. So let us come further to what it is. It is sure many of you were not here last time. For those who are here for the first time, I would like to give a very short definition of yoga, a glimpse of yoga. A question always comes to our mind: what is yoga, and how old is yoga? And to which religion does yoga belong? These are the three questions constantly asked by people. And what can I realize through yoga? For this, I would like to go more deeply to explain what yoga is. There are two kinds of vidyās: knowledge is parāvidyā and aparāvidyā. And there are two kinds of wise persons, or preachers; they are called vācārtī and lakṣārtī—vācārtī and lakṣārtī, parāvidyā and aparāvidyā. Aparāvidyā means the education on this planet, in this world, about this material world, or the intellect of the humans which is involved around this planet, or now they are going to the moon or some other planet. Parāvidyā is to know about the universal One, and that cannot be taught through some theories, but it is involved in the practice where the dharma is. There is a parāvidyā where there is a science. There is a parāvidyā where there is a satya, there is a dharma, and where there is the element. There is a vācārtī, one who reads the books, prepares the lectures, and then delivers the speech. Lakṣārtī is one who makes their aim to go beyond and search for that knowledge within oneself and in the universe. And therefore, everyone has different experiences to achieve that truth. To come to Edinburgh, there are many different directions, many different roads, many different aeroplanes, and different borders. Everyone who comes through different transportation, borders, and roads has different experiences: the ocean, the landscape, beautiful nature, rivers, and so on. But finally, we all come here together. So vācārtī is through the books and lakṣārtī is through the meditation. Meditation, which is practiced under the guidance of the Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya Satguru. Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya, the knower of Brahman who can inspire us, is called Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya in Sanskrit. Well, my achievements or my experiences through my deep meditations and through my great masters, the great lineage... In the Vedas, it is said, "Ananta Brahmāṇḍa," the endless universe that we all know. We don't know where the beginning is, and we don't know where the end is. It is limitless, without borders, and we are the limited ones. Our intellect, our approach is limited. How should the limited one know about the limitless one? One has to become one with that. There is one story: a few people were walking on the beach near the ocean, and there was standing a very nice, beautiful statue made out of salt. And the statue asked everyone who came there for walking, asking, "Do you know how deep is the ocean? Do you know how deep is the ocean?" Some say 50 meters, 10 meters, 5 meters, 2 meters, maybe 100 meters, everyone, but maybe don't know how deep is the ocean. So, one man came and he told the statue the answer. The best thing is to find out yourself. Jump in the ocean and you will find out how deep the ocean is. And the statue said, "Yes, that's a good idea." And the statue jumped in the ocean. It dove deep to find out how deep the ocean is. And till today, it didn't come out. And that's why near Edinburgh the ocean is salty. It is that statue. So we have to dive into the endless one to become one with the Brahman. As long as you exist as an individual, you are not with the universal One. Ananta Brahmāṇḍa, endless universe, śāstra, sūryas, and thousands of suns—thousands of the sun systems. Two thousand one hundred different universes are declared by yogīs. How did the yogis go there? Through which airplane? This endlessness, once there was nothing: no planets, no elements, no stars, no suns. It's called śūnyākāś, śūnyākāś, empty space, void space, blue, dark blue, nothing else. That space, emptiness, is called the embodiment of the mother. That's called the cosmic mother, that's called the divine mother, that is the real mother. And then this universe is completely filled. There is not a single space for a needle; it is free, compact. And that's called universal consciousness. That you may call satya, truth. You may call God Parameśvara, Īśvara, or you may call it love. Whatever you call that which has no form, but it is there. Now the space and consciousness, Brahman and Brahmāṇḍa, cetana, cosmos and cosmic consciousness—between both the space and consciousness, there is one called parā-śakti, ādi-śakti, divya-śakti, brahmāṇḍīya-śakti, mātrā-śakti, however you may call it. These are Sanskrit words. Śakti means power, energy. Now these two together, space and consciousness, are balanced perfectly, and that balancing power, or that Śakti, is known as yoga. Keeping the space and consciousness together in perfect balance, and where there is a balance, there is harmony, and therefore yoga is that harmony. Yoga is a balancing, yoga is a harmony, harmonizing, and where there is a harmony, there is a unity. So literally, yoga means union, union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness. That is the purpose. Practicing yoga otherwise is okay. You want to look beautiful, and this, what? How many years will you look beautiful? In 1976, I was giving one lecture in Czechoslovakia. That time was communist government. Beautiful. It was very nice. People were happy; people had everything. It was not bad for them who want to be greedy and make a big business, and to go in and out. I had once a lecture in the school for the nurses' hospital. Always I had been there as a state guest, and I told once in the lecture, "Practice yoga, you will always be young. You see me, I have nice black hair, and I'm young. And you will see me many, many years, I will be young." And last year, I had in the same school lecture, and I didn't say this, you know, so... How long will you keep your body beautiful, and this and that? One day, finished. Even if you keep your body in a bulletproof glass box, then I can tell you, you will be quickly gone. So, the ultimate aim of practicing yoga, spirituality, religious practice, is this: to become one with the cosmic Self and not to be an individual one, which is recycled again and again and again. That you call the recycling process, and in spirituality we say the reincarnation process. That's so the recycling word is taken from the reincarnation. You can look in the books before 150 years, any literature. There's no word of the recycling, nowhere. Since the greedy humans began to destroy this planet and create more and more pollution, now we are thinking about organic and recycling and environment-friendly materials. Anyhow, this is so: who believes in recycling must believe in reincarnation, and who doesn't believe in reincarnation also doesn't believe in that. It is yes, this body will be buried somewhere, it will be very nice fertilizer, and you can put tomatoes or pumpkins or anything, squash or what you call it. It will be very nice growing, and it will be eaten by someone, and it will go in the body, and it will be like energy cycling. Yoga is that uniting principle, the union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness. The soul is not the Self. Soul is only a bundle of karmas, śikṣā, kismat, or destiny. Ātmā is the universal, and soul is individual. Therefore, the soul cannot be translated as ātmā or Self. The principle of yoga which began—that Ādi-Śakti, Brahmāṇḍīya-Śakti, the universal power energy—in that consciousness awoke one desire. There is no other word I can translate, so let's say desire, and that is in universal consciousness: "I am one, and I will multiply." And there came this first creation, or whatever you call it, which was the Nāda, resonance, which the Veda declares: Nāda-rūpa-para-brahmā. The form of the Supreme, the God, is a resonance. Who understands the resonance, the vibration, can understand God. The best musician, when he or she begins to play their instrument, goes within oneself and plays. That person is floating on the waves of the resonance through the universe, different from the nature, ocean, mountains, air, all the elements. And a person like me, who plays the music and plays this paper like this and plays like this, then I am not one with myself; I am one with the book. If you see one of the best sitar players, Raviśaṅkar, Pandit Raviśaṅkar, when he takes his sitar in his hand, he's gone. He's not there anymore. He's gone. He becomes himself the Tāraṅga. Nāda-rūpa-para-brahmā. And so, if you are a musician, I congratulate you that you understand. At least you understand me now, what I tell you. So you try next time like this. That resonance is still today in every atom and in the space, in every element. So out of this ākāśa, through that nāda, which we call Aum—akāra, ukāra, makāra, Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, Maheśa. Akāra, Brahmā; ukāra, Viṣṇu; and makāra, Maheś, the Śiva. From this nāda, through vibration, begins to create the fire element, after the air element, water, and earth. And many, many of these billions and billions of stars, for many, many years. And that everything is existing in one consciousness. And we are one taraṅgā. We are one taraṅga, means one stream of the very fine of that cosmic consciousness, and we are going round and round, like the sun rays going round. This you will realize if you will practice. If you don't realize, I told you, heard, that's all. Someone told me there was an oak tree, and there was an old bird sitting on it. That bird spoke late and heard little. It wasn't a wise bird. That's it. So I told, and you heard. That's all, like a bird finished. Practice then will be very beautiful. I want to take you there. If you follow practice, otherwise, Hari Om Das Sat. That Taraṅg that you are from the endless and countless Taraṅg, the stream of that wave resonance going round and round, and that's nicely said, that is the beginning of individual consciousness. And this individual consciousness, the individual is fluttering on the waves of the times with the destiny of that taraṅg, so many planets, many things grow. And here again, perfectly balanced, created these five elements. And first, it is that taraṅg, that vibration, harmonized, balanced the elements: water, fire, earth, air, and space. When it is balanced, then it is harmonized. And when it is harmonized, then it is united. That time, your house is ready in the body of the mother. Which mother doesn't matter. Mother is a mother, either human or animals, birds, or the fish. Mother is a mother, that's it. Bitter is bitter, doesn't matter where. How so? Human is a human, doesn't matter where. So, the mother principle is the same, doesn't matter. And therefore it is said, "Mother is the first God. Mother is the universe, and first salutation to that mother." And so we are here, and we are individuals collecting many, many experiences, many impressions in many, many lives. And if you become a mother or father, then you have a great responsibility to liberate this soul in this world. There's a beautiful story which I will tell maybe tomorrow. There was a very great lady, and she made the vow, Śaṅkalpa: "The soul which will come in my womb will never go anymore into another's body, will be liberated, and directly come to the supreme Brahman." And yes, she did it. Her name was Mahārāṇī Madhālasā. If you know the story, India's philosophy... Well, dear friends, this element begins to function. These biological chemicals, and this all, begin to function, and creation began with Puruṣa and Prakṛti. Puruṣa is the consciousness, and Prakṛti is the nature. Only the consciousness can do nothing, and only the matter, the Prakṛti, can do nothing. So within this Prakṛti and Puruṣa, Brahma and Māyā, between there was one. That's called a desire, icchā, and that was, it's called the divine will of God. Thy will be seen, O Lord. And that, like his desire, everyone also has desires in this world. Planets, the plants also have desires, everything. Now, it is said that on this planet, the living creatures are divided into three categories. The creatures in the water, Jalchara; creatures on the earth, Thalchara; and creatures in the space, Nabhachara. And now, in these three different groups of creatures, where it is divided—some living in the water, some on the earth, and some in the space—throughout the entire universe, there became two forces through that vibration. It's called devī śakti and āsurī śakti, the divine śakti and the daivik śakti, or positive and negative forces. So, those who are in the Jalchara, in the water, they also have negative energy and enemies. On Thalchara, there is also negativity and there are enemies. And Navachara, in the space, there are also enemies and dangers. This is said: three tapas—ādhibhautik, ādhidaivik, and ādhyātmik—these three tapas in Sanskrit. Three kinds of fire, suffering. Now, in the modern world again, how much we are imitating the old system. Jalchara, thalchara, nabchara: navy, ground, and air force. The navy in the military fights against the enemies. The ground force and the air force. Everything is an imitation of our spiritual discourses. Now, these three groups are all within, according to the creatures, said 8.4 million different kinds of creatures are created: 8.4 million. And one is the human. If you don't believe me today, then begin to count. And next year when I come, you can say, "Swāmījī, five is missing." So I will tell you how the five are missing. So I can only tell you what the great seers told, what will be today and what will be tomorrow. Everything they knew, that's called Trikāl Darśī. The seer of the past, present, and future. And this 8.4 million, chaurāsī-lākh, makes one cycle. And there are two. One is called Dharmarāja and one is called Yamarāja. Dharamarāja is the king of justice, the king of truth. And Yamarāja is the king of death. You see, I got today this mālā. This mālā is the mālā of the justice flowers. That's why it's hanging on my neck. And in the Yama Rāja, there is one beautiful picture in Tibetan mythology. It is when the Mālā is hanging in the mouth of the Yama. Yama, because his nourishment is all creatures. Yama is the death. And everyone has to go through the mouth of death. Doesn't matter who is who, and so the science is brought here that we should not become the victims of the yamas. And therefore, yeah, all the praise. Therefore, we shall try to come to liberation. That's called a word: liberation. How? Yes. It is said, first you find your relation. Relation, the word religion comes from relation, and that word relation we call sanātana, and dharma is our duty or the right of this. Dharma, so Sanātana Dharma, realize your relation becomes the Dharma. And which relation? Relation to the cosmic Self. We all who are sitting here are that taraṅga, that wave, that stream of that universal One, and we have to find the way back to it, like iron and magnet, when they will come closer, then automatically there will be an attraction. When we will throw this cup into the air, then it will come quickly back down. Why? Because this is the smallest one, and its origin is this planet. And in modern science, they say gravity. Similarly, the tendency of all creatures is to come to its origin, to happiness. No one would like to be unhappy day and night. Every entity is searching for happiness. Even a mosquito, or a little ant, or bacteria would like to be happy and multiply. Similarly, a human would like to be happy and... multiply, unfortunately, humans have lost the roots of humanity and lost these moral and ethical principles, and that's why so many things happen everywhere throughout the world. Children are not taught what is a father. And mother, children are not taught what it means to respect and follow the mother and father. Children are not taught what our ancestors mean. And parents are not taught or educated before they are getting children about what it means to have a child. There is one belief in India, it's called Jaina. And in Jaina, they have one book called Ratansāra. And in that book, it is written in their religion very clearly, the Jain religion. Those parents are not able to educate their children spiritually and lead them to liberation. They have no right to get children. Otherwise, you give birth to a soul in this world, and you lead this soul into the darkness. Better not to have a child, better not to bring the soul here and leave it in the darkness. Without that education, a human is like an animal: eating, drinking, sleeping, and creating children. Every creature is an expert. Animals also, oh man, what can you do more than that? This, so it is the love that which is attraction between iron and magnet, similarly is the love of this individual to the universal one. So yoga said love means prayer: think, meditate, repeat mantra. Mantra repetition means think of God. Prayer means personal consultation with Him. As long as you are praying, you are sitting before Him and talking to Him. And when we are meditating, you are sitting on His lap and He's holding you. And when you repeat the mantra, then you enter in your heart, his heart in oneness, believe and do good. Negative action will have negative reaction, and positive action will have positive reaction. Do good, get good. Do bad, suffer bad. Serve, help. Helping hands have more value than folded hands. Ahiṃsā: do not kill, thou shalt not kill. Non-violence, no emotional violence, no intellectual violence, no social violence, no political violence, no physical violence, and no intellectual violence. Ahiṃsā, these are the principles of yoga now. At that time, there was no religion, which is now, in nowadays, we know which religions are existing on this planet. So now you can tell me, please, I ask you the question: how old is yoga? This is the first question. Second, to which religion belongs to yoga, and third, why should we practice yoga? And fourth, is yoga part of some religion, or are all religions part of yoga? Any religion which has a belief and goes to the temple, church, mosque, or whatever, praying, is already yoga. Any religion tells, "Do good, help, be kind," is already yoga, so we cannot separate yoga from any. Yes, when it comes to the individual, that I will teach yoga and tell you, "Believe now in this god and believe in that god," then it becomes a part of that stream of the other spirituality. Therefore, in Sanātana Dharma, in Hinduism, there is only one God. They do not accept two gods, one God that's called Brahman. But time to time, that divine energy incarnates in some forms. 24 incarnations till we remember in past, and they were also incarnations, like in form of a pig, a fish, animal, half-lion, half-human, and so on. We don't know why he becomes half-lion and half-fish and so on. Yes, there is a story, perfect stories. That I will tell you tomorrow. It's a long story, a beautiful story, why God became half lion and half human. There is some Indian sitting here. What is the name of that incarnation? Narasiṃhāvatāra. Narasiṃhāvatāra. Nar is a human, and Simha is the lion. That's it. So it is that we are here now. It doesn't matter how or from where. Okay. And I congratulate you and welcome you. Now you are the only one out of 8.4 million. Now, all these 8.4 million, they are all different kinds of creatures, different races you may say. One race is human. They are all children of God. Only one creator created all. Now we are here, and humans got a very special, powerful tool, and that's called buddhi, intellect. And it is that intellect through which a human can become a good human, can become a bad human, can become a holy saint, can become a criminal, or what they call nowadays... like a terrorist, I don't know who is a terrorist. The terrorist tells others they are terrorists, and like this, so big fish and the small fish try to understand the pain of their hearts, why they are like this. Well, anyhow, so we are the one, and we have the most powerful tool, and that's intellect. Human intellect also needs education. Humans can be educated endlessly. Knowledge has no end. Knowledge cannot be measured in kilograms, centimeters, or inches. You cannot measure. So this intellect needs to be turned toward the positive and the divine. For that, humans have got in their body 72,000 nerves. Nerves have no translation in English, the nāḍīs. Therefore, we call them nerves. Nadis are not nerves, but they are similar to our nerves. And that's why we are calling it a nerve. After 15 minutes, we will see the chart and speak further.
