Ajapa jap and seva bhav

A spiritual discourse on the essence of bhāva (devotion/value) and its application in life.

"The benefit is in the price, not in the goods."

"Prem chupāyā na chupāyī, prem kare prakāś. You cannot hide the love. Because love radiates."

Swami Avatarpuri explains the central concept of bhāva, using the analogy of gold's fluctuating price to illustrate how the value of our devotion, not external objects, determines spiritual gain or loss. He emphasizes cultivating selfless service (Sevā Bhāva) and unconditional love (Prem Bhāva), warning against negativity and illustrating the power of devotion with a story of a barber whose service invoked divine intervention. The talk integrates teachings from Holy Guruji, personal observations, and references to scriptures.

That is called Bhāva Samādhi. Bhāva means devotion. Bhāva also means emotion. And bhāva means the price, the value. But here, bhāva means your devotion, your belief. It is said—Holī Gurujī in satsaṅg often said—"Nafā bhāv meṁ hai, vastu meṁ nahīṁ." The benefit is in the price, not in the goods. Suppose today the gold price is 10,000 crowns per kilo. Tomorrow the price goes high; it becomes 25,000 crowns per kilo. It means the gold didn't increase even a milligram, but you gained 15,000 crowns because the price went high. Now, suppose today it is 10,000 per kilo, and tomorrow it is only 3,000 crowns per kilo. It means the gold didn't decrease at all, but the price decreased, and you lost 7,000. So, the goods remain equal as they are. The benefit of the goods is in the bhāva, the price. Similarly, what kind of bhāva you have towards God, what kind of bhāva you have towards your master, your neighbors, your friends, your parents, children, partner—it is that power, that value. So when your power is going up and down—one month you have higher power, very high, and for eleven months it is down—then this one month was nothing. "Chaḍhā utar," increasing and decreasing, that is our loss. Therefore, Gurujī said in one beautiful bhajan, "Nita Prem, merā adhik badī jo." Day by day, my love, my devotion should grow more and more. If bhāva is lost, you become poor, or your company goes bankrupt. If bhāva increases, you are rich. Therefore, take care that your bhāva always goes higher. Like in business life, Venice life is also a very big struggle. Very rich men often get heart attacks and die because bhāva falls down. Long ago, about 32 years ago, something like this happened in Austria. One poor farmer was playing Lotto-Toto. "Loto." In Hindi, "toto" means lost. And he won several million shillings. When he came to know how many millions he got, he got a shock, a heart attack, and died. That's it. So, bhāva. "Nafā," gain, is in bhāva. Thus, spiritual life is also a struggle. "Pag pag par khatra hai." On every step there is a danger, meaning your thoughts, your feelings, "kuśaṅgas," many, many things. Therefore it is said, you know, Pṛṣad said: Do not listen to negativity. If there is something negative and you can't avoid it, then plug your ears, but do not listen. That is like an infection for you. And do not speak badly. There are certain things which, once gone, will not come back. The bullet from the gun, when it's gone, will not return. The words which came out of your mouth will not return back; they will return back as a reaction. And the soul which went out of the body will not return—except there is Devapurījī or Mahāprabhujī, that they may bring it back, but this is rare. Therefore, certain things which we do will not come back. Do not speak badly. So, observe mauna, silence, that protects you. So, do not hear bad, and do not speak bad. And do not see the negative. There are many negative things there, not this. But from your own eyes, do not see the negative things in others. What he or she is doing, do not project your view, "Oh, this is negative," and ask yourself: "And what about you?" Your eyes will go down. So, Bhāva-samādhi. It is a struggle. Spirituality, the human life itself, is a struggle. Besides all this, human life is beautiful, great, and free. You have intellect, you have decisions, thoughts. But at the same time, it is not easy. So, it is your bhāva that should increase day by day. One gram, one day. In one year we have three hundred sixty-five grams, but if one day you have forty grams, and other days only five grams, and one month is zero, and then negative thinking—bhāva is not there. Sevā Bhāva is the greatest thing. Sevā means service, or Karma Yoga. Those who have Sevā Bhāva, that is the greatest one. The best action you can do in your life. The best sādhanā, practice, you can do in your life. There are two kinds of Sevā: Sakām and Niṣkām. Sakām Sevā means you do the work, service, but you expect payment, money. Niṣkāma is selfless, without any expectation. That means it will be awarded to you by God. Blessed are they whose seva is accepted. And Holy Gurujī said beautifully: "Lord, if you don't find me worthy enough to serve you directly, please accept my seva while serving your servant, that my service comes to thee." "Śrī Dīpadāyālaya Rājasūnam... O merciful Mahāprabhujī, please listen to my request, my prayer. Be blessed, merciful to me, and bless me with satsaṅg." This means, "Give me a chance to go to satsaṅg." And when you go to satsaṅg, then you should listen to satsaṅg. There are many people who go to satsaṅg: ten are sitting listening to satsaṅg, fifteen are standing outside, drinking tea and chatting. This happens mostly because—I know in my Austrian disciples in Vienna—when the prasāda comes, then all are there sitting. I tell them, I always tell them, but there are certain people: they listen here and go out there. Bhāva is missing, and without bhāva, you are lost. Because, let's say, I am not always in satsaṅg, and there's someone who has to lead the satsaṅg, so they come in and... Do you see Prem Lata is leading the satsaṅg? They go outside and talk, or sit there but talk to others. Prem Lata says, "Please, can you be silent?" After one minute, he said, "Endlik vanvierski pet sign?" "When will the prayer be?" So, have a prayer, prasāda, Hari Om. Then, have the time to sit together and drink tea. So, I don't know, maybe in your country something happens, but in my residential country, Austria, and especially in Vienna, it is hopeless. There are certain people whose mouths are constantly moving. And it's good that they are hearing today through the internet, maybe. So they will get some vivekā. But one thing they have is good: it doesn't matter how we are. Even if the master is angry, even through anger he is thinking of me. There must be some effect. When the fire falls on the grass, the grass burns. Or when the grass falls on the fire, the grass burns. So, it doesn't matter how the Master will think of us; our sin will burn. And it doesn't matter how you will think of the Master; still your sin will be cleared. But if you think negative, you will load over the sin. Sevā Bhāva, that is something divine. Then it's called Prem Bhāva. Prem Bhāva is great. Prem means love. Love without condition. That you give first place to others. Anyone comes, you offer something. You sow a love. Love is radiating. "Prem chupāyā na chupāyī, prem kare prakāś, dabhi dubhi rahī nahīṁ, kastūrī kī vās." "Prem chupāyā na chupāyī, prem kare prakāś." You cannot hide the love. Because love radiates like the kastūrī, the "pancholi," or the musk. It doesn't matter how you will keep it, where you will keep it, the scent will spread. It doesn't matter how strict you are, how straightforward you are, but if you are full of love, people will love you. They will come to you, but in your love there is no selfishness. It is called a universal, free love: Prem Bhāva. This morning we sang one bhajan from Holy Gurujī. It means your consciousness is that pot. When will the Lord fill my entire consciousness with love? Wherever I look, wherever I am, whatever I feel, whatever I say, everything is full of love. This is a very high level of consciousness, a very high state of being. But in that frame, that love has no selfishness. So when Śiva Bhāva and Prem Bhāva come together, oh my God. Sometimes physically you are totally exhausted, but you still have that energy, power, bhāva, sevā, and prem bhāva. For example, a nurse in a hospital. Of course they are working so that they will get money. But every nurse who became a nurse, their bhāva was to help the ill people, to serve. And if they have no sevābhāva, they can't work as a nurse. It's not easy to work in a hospital or with ill people. But premābhāva and sevābhāva together make them feel happy that they can do something. "I am running in the forest, here and there, wandering through the jungle, Prem Dīvānī." Dīvānī means like something mad, but not in that kind of madness, but divine, in divine consciousness. I am mad in love. No one understands my pain. That's it. And so, Prem Bhāva, this love towards your partner, love towards father, mother, brother, sister, neighbors, and other creatures. Oh, you are without any practice, already liberated, divine, jīvanmukta. It is that love when you see a small baby. What kind of love awakes in you? It doesn't matter if it's a human baby or some animals. Or you see a nice plant in your flat getting blossoms. Therefore, you got a name, Premamūrti. Oh, what a wonderful name. Embodiment of love. And the good thing is that both can have this name, male or female. And to have a name, Premamūrti, means you have to realize this. Prema-mūrti should never become a krodha-mūrti. Krodha means anger, hate, jealousy. Again, Gajānanda is always singing. Yes, yes, the jealous one is jealous. Poor Gajānanda, he's done nothing; he's only singing. You can also do it. Come. So, where there's prema, there's no hate, no jealousy, no complexes, no greediness. It is a surrender. Your heart becomes the universal heart. Your heart is an endless ocean, and how many creatures are enjoying inside? Sharks are also there in the ocean of your heart, yes, let them work. Your duty is to be the ocean, humbleness. Like this morning's story, "Elephant and Ant." Someone sent me a message through the webcast: "Master, your story was wonderful, but elephants are not so stupid that they will make a competition with the ant." Yes, I agree with you. But this is a story. The elephant is ego in this story, and the ant is kindness, a little humbleness. If you are a little gentle to your husband or to your wife, you will win that big elephant of the ego, or to anyone: friends, neighbors, colleagues. That's it. So, Prembhāva, Sevābhāva. And where there is premābhāva and sevābhāva, God is working for them. So there is one real story, the story of a barber. A barber, and he had a duty to go every morning at nine o'clock to the king and shave the king. Unfortunately, the king had a leprosy disease. Well, the barber, it was his duty. Order is order of the king. If he's five minutes late, he will be punished. Well, that's why we are in democracy, thanks to God. That we succeeded to bring the democracy, but some people misuse the democracy, so that becomes then called the "demon crazy," not a democracy, but demon crazy. They are demon, and again they are crazy, my God, double power. But thanks to all our world leaders, many social workers, many angels and many, many millions of good people like you are maintaining the democracy. The barber was a great devotee, a devotee of God, very spiritual, and he never missed the satsaṅg. It doesn't matter where he was. If he would hear that there was a satsaṅg, no matter how tired he was, it didn't matter. He would go to the satsaṅg. And if he saw that somewhere some sādhu, some holy saint, had come, he ran there. One day, at 8:30 in the morning, he was on his way to the king. And on the way, he met five sādhus, and he greeted them. He had a prema bhāva and a seva bhāva. So with his prema bhāva, he asked them if they had their breakfast already, milk and breakfast, or not. At that time, tea was still not introduced; tea and coffee were not introduced. At that time, there was some juice, milk, buttermilk, and some healthy drink or good water. So they said, "Well, still not." So, his prem bhāva... He asked them, "Please come to my house." And now his sevābhāva awoke, so he invited them, gave them a place to sit, brought them milk, and began to prepare some breakfast. He asked his wife to make breakfast, and he helped. "Prem dīvānī, merā dard na jāne koī." So he was full of prem bhāva and sevā bhāva. Anything that you do means you receive an immense amount of love. If someone, by writing, drops the pen down, some stranger, and you go down and pick it up and say, "Here you are, sir." What made you go down and pick up that pen? Śiva. Śiva Bhāva. And your Śiva Bhāva, when he got it, you know what he said? "Oh, thank you, thank you very much." He saw his appreciation, respect, thankfulness, love. He didn't say "stupid." No, he will not say like this. So when Sevā and Prembhāva come together, then there is Brahmānanda, the highest bliss. So the barber was happy and lost the awareness of time. And even he forgot that he had to go very punctually to the king for shaving. It became 11 o'clock. How many hours was he late? Eight, he should be there, and now he's there, 11. So nine was a fixed time, you know, and his wife said, "Sorry, but king..." The sādhus had their breakfast and went away. And he was talking to his wife. How divine. She said, "But, king..." Oh yes, he took his tools: the knife for shaving, soap and brush, and like this, while singing in a bhajan to God, praying. "Dīpa Nīrañjana, Śrī Dīpa Nīrañjana, Śrī... Dīpa Nīrañjana, Ś..." I know through this mantra, the mind will be purified, so hopefully the mind of the king will be purified and will not be angry. Generally, the king was not angry, but all the people around him, they are angry. But he said to his wife, "Don't worry. Let it be as it will be. If I'm alive, we'll come back." And he went, like Draupadī in the Mahābhārata story. The Kauravas, Duryodhana, and they want to pull her sari away. And in that audience, all these—Bhīṣma and all who were sitting—all were powerless, Droṇācārya and Kṛpācārya. No one was able to say one word against it and drop the new. All who are sitting here are powerless. They are dead bodies only. They have no confidence in themselves. They are slaves, and so on. Only one thing: God can help me. Krishna. "Hey Krishna. Hey Govinda. Hey Gopāla." She was crying and calling to God. On one side, Duśśāsana is pulling the sari, and on the other side, Krishna blessed her, and the sari was prolonging from Krishna's hand. A very great and strong warrior bodybuilder, for hours and hours he was pulling and sweating, exhausted. And heaps of the sari cloth were there. Still, not even one centimeter of Draupadī's body could become naked. God protected her. Similarly, that bhakta, he went to the king. Inside, he was a little bit scared, and the helper or the slave of that king, they ran and came to welcome him. "How nice you came again. The king was remembering," and he said, "Please come." He said, "Yes, but I'm sorry to come late." And he came to the king. The king said, "Thank you." Thank you. And the barber didn't understand what was going on. The king said, "What kind of power did you have today in your hands? Morning, nine o'clock, when you touched just my cheeks, suddenly my old leprosy disease began to disappear. And I asked you, and you just smiled. We were just brushing, putting the brush in the soap and putting the soap here and there, and everything became healthy." He understood, and he got a big award. He got a lot of things, and he came home, and he said to his wife, "What happened?" And they knew it was God, Kṛṣṇa, due to the seva bhāva and prem bhāva for the sake of the bhaktas. God became a barber and blessed that king, and when God touches you, of course, what do you expect more? We are only expecting, at least we can see, but he's putting on your cheeks, soap and brushing and holding you and looking at you. Oh my God, every touch is like a universe opening in you. So, due to the sevābhāva and premābhāva, God became your servant. God did your duty. Therefore, Devapurījī used to say, "God takes upon himself the destiny of the devotee." And that's why Gurujī said in his bhajan, "Sena, Narsi, Bhagatmira," and all of them—there is the name of Sena Bhakti there. So his name was Sena. All barbers in India, this caste is called the Sena caste. And any barber there, you will say, "How are you?" He will be very happy if the barber comes and you ask, "Who is there?" You will answer the same: "Bhaktas here." So, bhāva samādhi. Bhāva is something beautiful, and so while singing prayer, while singing bhajans, while singing kīrtans, when your heart is pure, consciousness is pure, suddenly you are in the Bhāva Samādhi, which Holy Gurujī describes about Lālā Nānjī Mahārāj, disciple of Mahāprabhujī, could come to the bhāva samādhi. So try to improve and try to realize premā bhāva and sevā bhāva. Prembhāva and sevābhāva. So when someone has a prembhāva, we call it premmūrti, or sevāmūrti: embodiment of love and service. And therefore, do not hesitate to get seva. Don't hesitate to get karma yoga. What you do at home is also karma, but that is not that karma. That's not seva bhāva; that is obligation, that's it. And where you feel obligation, you become tired. And when you do with prem and seva bhāva, you are never tired. There are some people; they don't want to get retired. They said, "While working, I want to die, Śiva." That's it.
