I am Atma

A discourse on the chakra system and Kundalini awakening.

"Yoga in daily life is a science of the body, mind, soul, and consciousness. Yoga in daily life leads to the harmony of body, mind, and soul."

"Human life is given with two things. First, be the owner, the protector... And the second main reason, recognize your divine Self."

Swami Maheshwarananda (referred to as Swamiji) delivers a lecture in Hamburg on the spiritual anatomy of the human being. He explains the primordial origins of consciousness, sound (Om), and the dual forces in creation, linking them to the evolution of life and the human body's subtle system. He describes the journey of the individual soul (Jiva) toward union with the universal consciousness (Shiva), facilitated by the awakening of the Kundalini energy through the chakras, and emphasizes the need for a pure lifestyle and correct guidance from a living master.

Filming locations: Hamburg, Germany.

Om Shāntiḥ, Shāntiḥ, Shāntiḥ. Salutation to the Cosmic Light, Lord of our Hearts, Omniscient and Omnipresent. In His Divine Presence, a beautiful good evening to all brothers and sisters. I am very pleased to be here again in Hamburg today. It is always beautiful wherever good people are, wherever love is present. Everywhere it is beautiful, and where there is no love, it is unpleasant everywhere. I believe I created good karma in my past life. Wherever I go, loving people always come to me, just as you all are here today. Our life is unique. It is not certain that we will have such a beautiful life again. It is a unique opportunity, a unique chance to benefit—I will not say exploit, but benefit. The topic is about cakras and Kuṇḍalinī. The Anāhata Cakra, the heart center—how beautiful. Whether it is beautiful or not, we will know tomorrow. What is there to know about the Anāhata Cakra, and how can we awaken or cleanse these qualities? What disturbs us and what helps us according to the Anāhata Cakra, the heart center? Many of you have not yet attended my lecture, and I am sorry that I cannot tell you anything from the very beginning, because the people have been listening systematically to the chakra lecture for five years. If I repeat it once more, then half of you will be here at the next seminar, because Svāmījī always says the same thing. Now, what do I do? Being a master is not easy. People pull both sides. For that, we have a beautiful book called The Hidden Powers in Man. But a book is a book, and a living master is a living master. This is knowledge, a living knowledge. As our president has said, information other than firsthand. I try to be firsthand, because I have been in Europe for almost 40 years now—whether I am still firsthand or otherwise. But Europe has a country that influences personalities. Nevertheless, we always strive to remain authentic. Kuṇḍalinī Śakti—this is the most important point in our chakra book. How it began and how yoga continues to guide us in daily life. Yoga in daily life is a science of the body, mind, soul, and consciousness. Yoga in daily life leads to the harmony of body, mind, and soul. Yoga is an ancient principle, not a philosophy. That was later on. So, I will go back a little bit so that our new friends here, or brothers and sisters who are here for the first time, might understand a bit more. Let us imagine an endless space, called Ānanda, boundless—the Ānanda-Brahman universe. Endless means we do not know where the boundary is. And empty, completely empty, nothing inside at all, except three. Space is a body; it is compared to the cosmic mother, like a mother’s body, a mother’s womb. Is it a vibration with the light or with my eyes? It becomes a little darker and then bright again. My eyes? Thank God. And in this śūnyakaṣ, in the empty space, there is one thing, which is called consciousness. We can say God, consciousness, the light, the truth, and so on—Cosmic Consciousness. And this consciousness is called Hiraṇyagarbha, the golden embryo. Mother-Life is the space, the space that is endless. As I say, Cosmic Consciousness, not consciousness-cosmic, right? Cosmic Consciousness. And so first space, and then consciousness. Sure, shall I continue or have I satisfied your questions? Now, between the two—space and consciousness—are the third principles. And indeed, this can be called energy, power, or a principle that holds consciousness and space together, harmonizes them, and unites them as one. These principles mean Yoga. Yoga. Not the headstand or the shoulder stand or the lotus position or what that means or anything like that. And then breathe to the left and breathe to the right and not breathe and breathe again. No, those are the voids. That is not Yoga. It is the practices that lead us to Yoga. So, Yoga is as old as this space and consciousness. And now, it is said in the ancient scriptures, the Vedas: "I am one, only one, and now I wish to multiply." We sleep deeply, wake up, and begin our thoughts, activities, feelings, and so on and so forth. The whole world awakens in our consciousness. And such a cosmic consciousness never sleeps. Consciousness is consciousness, but it has multiple levels. And this steadiness, "I am one and wish to multiply," means divine, godly will. Thy will shall be seen, Lord. That is the divine will. Not that God has a desire to obtain this or that. The journalists asked me four days ago, "What do you think, Mr. Svāmījī, about these financial banking crises in the world?" I asked, do you want a true answer from me or shall I suffer with you? He said, of course it was. Then I said, if money is lost, nothing is truly lost. When health is lost, something is lost. But if character is lost, everything is lost. O human being, you shall not believe in false gods. The Bible says: A person weeps and is nervous. A hectic state caused by money. And tell me, what is ignorance like, that is interesting. A saint said, I must laugh heartily. Why? Because I see a fish in the water, thirsty. Money has not flown off somewhere into the sky. Money has not somehow dematerialized. Money is still there. It is psychological terror. The money is there. But just as it can be manipulated... So I said, that is nothing at all. Material life is nothing. If you lose your spirituality, if you lose your family harmony, then something is lost. So, God has no such desires. From this sound, this awakening, that is the sound. And the Veda says, Nāda Rūpa Parabrahma—the form, the shape of God is sound. And the world is sound. Everything that exists in the world is sound. Nothing else at all. No matter, everything is nothing at all. A sound has come together. Space, consciousness, yoga—which holds, connects power and sound—leads onward. Nothing else. But we will realize that when we have complete awakening of consciousness, awakening of Kuṇḍalinī, or something like that. Nothing before that. I have truly been wondering for the past 14 days, pondering why people who are so intelligent, so learned, and capable—scientific engineers and whatnot, logicians, logicians, a physiologist, and many more logicians, biologists, and so forth—are like this. How can a person become unbalanced just because the bank is in the red? That is not the case at all. Where is the money? Money was, money is, money will be. If the whole world were to accept my teaching, the entire financial situation would come into balance. It is like a person who has lost their balance. Now a doctor is needed to administer a tranquilizer. And so it will be. Let's return to yoga, okay? Those were the fairs for the bankers. Faldi, Faldi, listen to me. They want to invite me to Wall Street. I will name it. Yes. So, Nāda Rūpa Parabrahma. From this first sound begins this vibration. And that is called OM. A-kāra, U-kāra, Ma-kāra. Beginning, middle, and back again, above. And through this vibration throughout the entire universe, the elements of fire, air, water, and matter or earth began. Ānanda Brahmāṇḍa, Śāstra, Sūryas and so on—the Yogi said, Endless Universe, Endless Universe and thousands and thousands of solar systems were created through a sound, OM OM... OM OM. Beautiful mantra about sound—every morning, you should repeat this mantra at least once. It lies within the latent powers of human beings. You will find this mantra. Let us return to our beautiful planet. Our planet is said to be a living planet, Living Planet. And according to spirituality and according to scientific souls, our planet is called the mortal world, Mṛtyuloka. Death and rebirth are manifested on this planet. And the souls that have formed qualities through this sound are the individual souls. But they have not lost their originality, and that means Ātman. Ātman is universal and the soul is individual. The ātman is free from all qualities, while the soul is bound, trapped by our qualities, our actions, and is a victim of destiny. And destiny, our fate, is according to our karma. Karma means actions and reactions. Act and accept the consequences of what we have done. And so on this planet, living beings have evolved—8.4 million different species of living beings. And according to Yoga or spirituality, they are divided into three categories: the beings in water, on earth, and in space or air. Water element, earth element, and space element. Through this cosmic vibration, Oṁ, sound, two forces develop. Daivika-Śakti and Āsurī-Śakti. Divine forces and demonic forces. Or negative and positive. And since then, these two forces have been struggling, each wanting to dominate. And so, there are also the protective forces to know, which are called the Mantras. Good mantras and also the negative, bad mantras for magic and so on. And for all three levels, Jalaja, Sthalaja, Nabhaja, there is a protective agent, also powers. And in modern life, they are called Navy, Ground Force, and Air Force. Everything that has been developed here in this world, in modern society, through science, comes from spiritual science and from the Vedas or the Upaniṣads. Out of 8.4 million different living beings, one is the human. Man is one. This means there is no race, there is no difference. Man is only one thing. And humans have received a special power, whether we say from God or from Mother Nature or whatever one wants to call it, it is called intellect. And the human intellect needs teaching, needs education. According to the teaching, a person develops their path for the future. If one stays with me, sooner or later he will become a Swami. One who stays with someone who constantly drinks alcohol will also become an alcoholic. Or someone donates time to the people whom we nowadays call terrorists, we terrorists. Everyone has their own qualities of the pillar of knowledge, and we accept those qualities. Good teaching leads us to good things, bad teaching leads us to bad teachings. If we had received good spiritual teaching or upbringing in this world, and the upbringing from our parents on both sides, mother and father, a harmonious family, then in this world, in this time, with all the problems that exist, there would no longer be any problem. Education. And so, it is said that human life is given with two things. First, be the owner, the protector. You are here in this world to possess all living beings, so to speak, the entire planet. Also an environmental existence, rivers, lakes, ocean, animals, humans, vegetation, and everything. And the second main reason, recognize your divine Self, that I am an Ātman, not a Jīvātman. Jīva is individual, Ātman is universal. Self-realization, Ātma-Jñāna. And self-realization can only be achieved through a spiritual life, a pure sāttvic diet, vegetarian food. And vegetarian food also means only food where you do not destroy the plants, only take the leaves or fruit vegetables. So many things, we will talk about them later. And so a human being has evolved. In the human body, Mother God or Nature or God, it does not matter, or the Creator, has given everything. And so the Vedas say, Piṇḍe means the individual self, the body. Brahmāṇḍa means Universe. What exists in the universe exists in the human body. And what does not exist in the human body, does not exist anywhere either. Astral travel, journeying, wandering first means journeying into your body, getting to know it. We may know perhaps 0.5%. Everything that concerns our physical body, energy body, our intellect, our consciousness, our memory, our speech, our movement, feelings, everything, everything is held together by one force—and that is Yoga. I do not mean anything like meditation or breathing left, right, not breathing, breathing more, breathing fast, breathing slow, no breathing. Everything is breath. In the Hindi language, breath means the Self. Not the soul, but the highest Self. But Yoga. I am speaking of Yoga. The word Yoga. And to realize that, in this body, everything that was beautifully created, special power, cosmic power came into this body as the Ātman. And with this Ātman, the Ātman is accompanied, revealed by a divine power, called Kuṇḍalinī Śakti. Jīva and Śiva. Jīva is the individual soul and Śiva is the universal Ātman. The jīva's feelings move toward the Mūlādhāra, and Śiva is where the Sahasrāra Cakra is. The Jīva, the Indriyas, the feelings of nature, and nature itself, nature, that is the Śakti, power, Kuṇḍalinī. Today you have witnessed a dance, Gaurī Śaṅkara. Gaurī is the part of Lord Śiva, the consort of God Śiva, and Śaṅkara is Śiva. In everyone lives Śiva and Śakti. Every man on this side is feminine, and this side is masculine. And every woman also has these two parts. About spirituality. Nothing else. And so Jīva and Śiva journey together. It is like the sattva and the body. Since that time, they swim on the waves of time. Through the infinite space. And sometimes they come together here. The end of this journey is only when the Jīva unites with Śiva. This individual consciousness within the divine consciousness. Power, the Śakti, it has a longing, to come to consciousness, to come to Śiva. Please do not understand Śiva and Śakti here as male and female or anatomically. No. It is not about gender. In spirituality, beyond the body, there is no longer woman and man. It is unity. This dualism exists here. And we must overcome this dualism. Clear? Cosmic Mother, cosmic power, energy as Kuṇḍalinī Śakti. Kuṇḍalinī means energy, the energy always moves in a circle, it rotates. Everything that exists in this universe, including the universe itself, is round. So in the human body, Yoga anatomy says there are 72,000 energy channels, meaning nāḍīs, which might be translated as nerves. Nāḍīs are not nerves, but there is no other word. And so we compare how the nerves are. These 72,000 nāḍīs carry energy throughout the entire body along with consciousness. Where there is energy, there is consciousness; where there is consciousness, there is energy. Where energy and consciousness exist, there is life. What moves with consciousness cannot move otherwise without energy. And 72,000 nāḍīs. So perhaps here we have, how shall I say, exactly, one, here in this picture you see, but they are not 72,000, rather very important, significant main channels of the energy that flows throughout the entire body. And among them, the three are very important: Iḍā, Piṅgalā, Suṣumṇā. The left side, which is by our left nostril, is the lunar system; the right side is the solar system, and the center is the consciousness universe. The center is called the central nerve, the sympathetic and parasympathetic, the two systems. According to Yoga, it is said that the moon system controls our emotions. The moon is the emotion. Emotion is the water. And when the water moves, it is very heavy. To the right is the sun. This is the activity, the temperament. Thoughts. Restless and calm thoughts. And in the middle is the consciousness. These three channels move like waves, and that is why the serpent power is said to coil. There is no snake in our body, but the nerves move like a snake, and that is why it is said to be like the serpent power. The three nerves come together and go down to the end of our spine, forming a knot. It means a gland, small, or there this reflection, which is called the Cakra, Mūlādhāra Cakra. According to the cakras, if one wants to speak, there are 72,000 cakras in this body because there are 72,000 nerves. And then the cakras are divided in the body: from the soles of the feet to the foot bones is the Earth, the Earth cakra. And from the foot bones to the knees is the Vegetation. From the knees to the hip joints are the animal, the animalistic cakras. And where the spine begins from below and goes upward, there are the human chakras, and from the end of the spine all the way up are the divine or spiritual chakras. The vegetation chakras have qualities of the earth, the animal chakras have qualities of vegetation and a touch of humans. And from Mūlādhāra to Viśuddhi Cakra, these five chakras belong to humans; they are the human chakras, but also have the influence of the animalistic qualities. And from the Viśuddhi Cakra above, from the Ājñā Cakra, Bindu, and Sahasrāra, there are the divine chakras, but still human qualities remain within. When all the chakras are awakened through a pure yoga technique by a master, a Guru, by Guru Kṛpā, then the disciple experiences beautiful feelings and truly an awakening of the divine power. If someone has made a mistake or performed a technique incorrectly and the master or the mistress says, "Madam, thank you"—it is because we have so few female masters, and therefore there has not been proper or adequate attention given to the practitioners or students. And when power comes from control, it is very difficult to bring it back together again. But where there is will, there is power, a path. And so the Anāhata Cakra, which we will speak about tomorrow and the day after, is one that can heal everything again and bring everything together. These five cakras correspond to five elements. Mūlādhāra, the earth. Svādhiṣṭhāna, water. Maṇipūra, fire. Anāhata, what is it? Air. Viśuddhi, Ākāśa. And this time we have Viśuddhi Cakra. Anāhata, thank you. May I have the cakras, individually please? And this is how beautiful the Mūlādhāra Cakra looks. When the Mūlādhāra cakra, it has four lotus petals. And the energy, the Kuṇḍalinī, the Śakti, the Śiva Liṅga, is the Hagaṇau in the center. And all the other symbols have already been explained, so I will not explain anything further. Four leaves mean that each leaf of the flower, when unfolded, represents a quality in the person. This is the awakening of the Kuṇḍalinī. First, clarity. Awaken clarity. That means knowledge. Second, love. Universal love. Divine love. Love towards all living beings and everything. Love, that is the most beautiful love. This is called Paramananda. So, the knowledge, that is, the light, clarity, and love. When the Two arises, then the third awakens, that is called contentment. Then it doesn't matter whether the money bank rubs or not, Mr. Joom. We need a handful of rice, that is enough. If there is no electricity, we have a candle. We will work. Oh human, do not lose your nerves. Contentment, knowledge, love, satisfaction, and self-confidence, self-assurance, self-awareness. I am. So, these are the four qualities, unfolded in human consciousness, located there at the Svādhiṣṭhāna Cakra below, where the Mūlādhāra Cakra lies. And so off we go up there. How beautiful. No fear, no pain, no confusion, no ignorance, no unpleasant feelings. How beautiful. But some feel that something is moving through the spine. My explanation is that if someone feels something whipping inside the spine, then it is the highest time to seek a psychologist. This is not yoga. And that was not a yoga practice either. It is very important to immediately stop all exercises and ensure that everything is anatomically and physically in order within the body. Or psychologically as well. Because when one is afraid, the Mūlādhāra contracts again. And as the Mūlādhāra contracts, fears arise. Learn to relax the Mūlādhāra-Cakra. Please dissolve your fears, confusion, and depression. And therefore, those people who have depression, who have fears, who cannot sleep, who are afraid, they should learn to practice Aśvinī Mudrā. Aśvinī Mudrā in yoga in daily life, in the book, very beautifully written, how one should practice Aśvinī Mudrā. Aśvinī Mudrā is one of the best practices that relaxes from the Mūlādhāra through all the cakras up to the head. A wonderful energy develops the body, one relaxes. Aśva means horse, Mudrā means movement or holding. When a little horse or a horse drops dumplings, afterwards it contracts its gluteal muscle and relaxes. Inhale several times. This brings relaxation. And so, in yoga, all the exercises were imitated from horses or other living beings. Aśvinī Mudrā, don’t forget. If you have uncomfortable feelings anywhere in your cakras, sit down and practice Aśvinī Mudrā. And then, of course, several exercises will follow in the Anāhata Cakra tomorrow and the day after. And immediately another beautiful cakra appears, called Svādhiṣṭhāna. My God. And there sits the crocodile. Now you can all imagine what crocodile means. And there are the six petals, six-petaled, lotus, initially unfolding. One leaf after another. Beautiful. What unfolds? Desire, longing, jealousy, greed, selfishness, anger, hatred, envy, ego, nothing yet. So the most beautiful feelings that arise from below are corrupted. The crocodile swallows everything. For that, we need the Master who can swiftly guide us through immediately. The crocodile sits on the ground and flies away like this, off we go, then he cannot catch us. Next comes the cakra, Maṇipūra, that is fire. We had to go through fire. There are the ten Indriyas, ten Prāṇas. All will come together. The ten Indriyas, the sensory organs, five Karmendriyas and five Jñānendriyas, or the ten Prāṇas, five Prāṇas and five Upaprāṇas. Our life begins from this center. The very first thing we began to develop in our mother's womb, when we entered it, this embryo, was the Maṇipūra Cakra, and then the whole body. It is a beautiful feeling, but it is fire. It has both beautiful qualities and negative qualities. Let us then come to the Anāhata Cakra, which we will hopefully cover in two days, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow; a beautiful cakra.
