I am the way

A spiritual discourse on inner yoga, peace, and the guru-disciple relationship.

"The ultimate goal of human life is to achieve Brahma Jñāna or Ātmā Jñāna."

"Real yoga is what we call the yoga in daily life, the inner yoga. Inner Yoga is your master who will teach you."

Swami Ji addresses a global audience from Jordan, emphasizing the guru as the living path to divine consciousness. He teaches that inner peace (śānti) and contentment (saṅtoṣa) are the true wealth, illustrated by a lengthy parable about a Swami who endures an insult for fifty years to preserve his peace and fulfill a promise. The talk stresses constant self-observation, overcoming anger, and maintaining spiritual alertness in daily life.

Adoration to the Cosmic Light, the Lord of our hearts, omniscient and omnipresent. Adoration to our divine master. Good evening, dear brothers and sisters here in Jadan Ashram, Rajasthan, district Pali, and to all dear brothers and sisters, practitioners of Yoga in Daily Life and of different spiritual paths and spiritual seekers. A very good evening to all of you. This divine message in the form of a blessing is coming to you from Jordan. To those who have a birthday today, I wish you a happy birthday and pray for your good health, harmony, and a happy, long life—a life with spiritual development. Happy to see you all here and through the webcast. God bless you forever with all good qualities and good things. Yoga is a science of body, mind, consciousness, and soul. It is a way to the Divine Self, or what we call the way to God. In the Bible, it is mentioned that Jesus was sitting with his disciples and discussing different spiritualities and paths. The disciples asked Lord Jesus, "What is the better way?" Jesus, as a Master, said, "I am the way to the holy father. You may see Brahman." Who said this? The master or guru. To whom? To the disciples. What does this mean? Not that embodiment of Jesus only, but that Guru Tattva, that divine light, the Divine energy of the Master or Gurudev, which is transforming in the consciousness of the disciple. The consciousness of the disciple may proceed, expand to the unity with the Supreme. Individual consciousness merges into the cosmic consciousness through what? Through the guidance of the living Guru, the living Master. If it is only limited to a particular incarnation, avatāra, or a holy saint, slowly, slowly, this world will be swallowed by the darkness of ignorance. It is the Gurudev who reminds us time to time in prayers and teaches us, "Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya," mercifully leading us from the darkness of ignorance to the light of wisdom. Every master, every Gurudev, no matter which part of the world, is a way to the supreme for the disciples. If a disciple makes a mistake that creates doubts and separates from or leaves the master, that is one of the great mistakes or great tragedies which can happen to that disciple. Therefore, the Master is praying for the disciples too. The master is praying that I and my disciple, and the disciple is also praying, "I and my master may live in harmony, in love, in understanding, and in divine light." Otherwise, no spiritual practice can lead you to your ultimate goal. The ultimate goal of human life is to achieve Brahma Jñāna or Ātmā Jñāna. There are many different techniques you may call yoga. Yoga means something that brings you into harmony. Something brings your body, mind, and consciousness, or your intellect, into balance. And that leads you to the unity. Therefore, yoga means union. Yoga means oneness, individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness. We disciples can make many mistakes that destroy our inner peace. We make many mistakes that destroy our inner balance. We make many mistakes to create inner anger. We make the mistakes which create the doubts within us. You never know in which way the supreme power, God, or your Gurudev will test you. That is to see if you are angry or not, if you lose your inner peace, the śānti, or not. Every one of us, several times a day, repeats "Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti, Oṁ Śānti." It means peace within me first, peace within me. If you are at peace, you can create peace. If this bulb has no electricity, it cannot give the light. Yes, in India there are many ladies whose name is Śānti, name is Śānti, but... inside is ashaṅti, restlessness. Also, the name of the man is also many times Shanti, Shantilal, Shantiram, Shantidev. The name is Shanti, but inside is ashaṅti. The name is Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, but the person is very poor, very, very poor, begging. You ask, "What's your name?" "My name is Lakshmi." Then, Lakshmi. The real Lakshmī is ashamed about that, and Lakshmī said, "Why did they give the name Lakshmī to this person?" The name is Vijay, victory, but the person is fearful all the time, afraid and full of fear. You are not brave, not a hero. You cannot have victory. Similarly, that peace, the śānti, should develop in your heart. Then, śānti will come. Another form of śānti is saṅtoṣa, contentment. Gaj dhan, bhaj dhan, aur ratan dhan khan, jab aaye santosh dhan, sab dhan dhol shaman. Our beloved Satgurudev, Swami Madhvanājī Mahārāj, used to say often in satsaṅg this poem. You may have many elephants or gold, with the fullness of the elephants. You may have the golden birds, or you may have the mines of jewels. You are not happy. Still, you have no contentment. This wealth is only temporary wealth which you have. It will grow day by day, the desires. So you must have that kind of wealth. The best wealth, the biggest wealth, is that śāntoṣa dhana. Dhana means wealth. When inside you are satisfied and have peace, then all money and wealth and pelt and dill is just like dust. Nothing can make you happy, only the santoṣa and śānti. But destiny is testing; the master is putting in the needles to know whether the disciple can get angry or not. So there is one story. There was a small village, very nice people, merchants. And in that part of the village nearby, that village was a very beautiful small ashram. In that ashram was living one Swamījī, very famous. People followed him. People adored him. People respected him. And people used to come for advice. Swamiji was very peaceful. He had a very peaceful nature. And lifelong, he was trying to be kind. Doesn't matter what happened. Always smiling. If he tells you you are stupid, say, "Thank you." It's good that I am stupid, not you. You see, someone said you are ugly. Oh, that is very good. Thank you. At least I am ugly and you are beautiful. So enjoy. In that village, whenever Swāmījī used to walk through the streets, the crowd of people, the disciples, were following him. And all different religious people were living in that village. Swamijī was walking through the market. And there was one shop from one Muslim. And that Muslim, he liked to make jokes. When Swamiji came walking by his shop, he said, "Swamiji, I have one question. Can you answer?" Swamiji stopped and said, "Yes. What is your question, my son?" He said, "Swamijī, what is the difference between your beard and the tail of the donkey?" And the disciples, like Phul Purī and Yogīs and Jasharāj Purī and Autar Purī, and all these Purīs and Sabjīs, they were so angry, they wanted to catch him and beat him. Swāmījī said, "No, no... don't do this." Swamiji said, "Time will come, I will answer you, my son. Bless you." And Swamiji went away. Time passed, time passed. When Swamiji went away, that Muslim felt very pity in his heart. Gandhiji said, "We will not take the weapons." But this fight without a weapon for a right, this subtle fight is also sometimes more painful than bullets. So that Muslim, he felt very pitiful, very unhappy. He sat down and said, "O Mary Malik, O my Lord, kyā ho gayā mere buddhi ko? Kyō maine aise āp śabdo mein aise mahātma kā apmān kiyā?" What happened to my intellect, that I insulted such a great personality? Swamiji didn't feel any discomfort. He just went. Years and years passed. About fifty years passed. Swamiji became older and older across the 100 years. This body is made out of five elements. Dharma of the body is to be born, grow, child life, teenager, young, family, father, old man, old wife, woman, and Hari Om Tat Sat. Baki sab, gaf sab. Chale jao, chup chup. Rām nām sat hai, atheīt gyā gath hai. So the last day came. Swamiji was a yogi. He did not feel disturbed in his inner peace. He didn't become angry. He was not sad, but at the last minute of his life, the last hours of his life, he called one disciple and said, "Go and call that Muslim fellow to me." So, the disciple said, "Why, Swamiji?" He said, "Go." People went to his shop and said, "Swāmījī is calling you. He is very ill, and it seems that he will pass away." That man felt so sorry, so unhappy. I am that person who, some years ago, insulted the Swāmījī. With which face will I go to Swāmījī? But order is order, guru is guru, master is master, parent is parents, elderly person is elderly person, wise man is wise man. All juniors have to follow always seniors' advice. And he went with great respect. Swāmījī said, "Oh, my son, I was waiting so long, come sit here near me." He didn't dare to sit. He said, "No, no..." "Sit down, sit down." He sat down. "My son. You know, I was observing myself the last 50 years. If I get angry, what you told me that day, remember?" He said, "Excuse me, I was so stupid. I was so ignorant. Just out of my mouth slid the word. I didn't mean..." The master said, "No, no, doesn't matter if you mean or not. It was a training for me, lifelong. Last 50 years, whenever I remember, it reminded me: śānti, forgiveness, peace, santosa, accept, understand my son. Now I'm going away from this world. I owe you one answer. If I will not answer you this, then I have to again take a birth in this world to answer your question. Only for this, I've paid all my karmas back. I tried all hard. My account is completely cleared up, only one left. That I owe you something, and that's one answer." He said, "I don't need an answer. Forgive me that I need." He said, "That I gave you already long ago, you did not know. My answer is this, my son. There is a difference between a beard and a donkey's tail. Om Śānti. Om Śānti. Om Shānti." And Swāmījī passed away. So, anything you promise, anyone asks you for something, don't get angry. If someone refuses you, don't get angry. That is a training. That is a practice. That's yoga. Not only that, every day you practice left and right, left and right, stand up, sit down, stand up, walk, run, sit, jog, sit, śīrṣāsana, shoulder asana, sarvāṅgāsana, bhujaṅgāsana, all asana, no asana, śrīyānāsana, everything. They are good for your health, but real yoga is what we call the yoga in daily life, the inner yoga. Inner Yoga is your master who will teach you, and when he tells something, guru vākya, you remember. Yesterday I told about guru vākya and guru sevā. You don't know in which way God will accept your service. We mostly do that kind of Karma Yoga which we like very much, and we avoid, we hide, we escape which we don't like. You have to die in order to live. In the Bible, it is also said you have to die in order to live, meaning kill your ego. So tomorrow, you tell everybody, "Okay, you are stupid, you are a crazy person. I hate you." Then they will say, "Can I talk with Swāmījī? Swāmījī, I'm fed up. I can't anymore." It means you failed. So answer, "Thank you. I'm happy that I am stupid, and I'm so happy that you are the wise one." Good one. That's it. Never cheat anyone. If someone cheats you, that is in your favor. It's good to be cheated, but very bad to cheat. Somebody will say, "How stupid is that person? I cheated him." It's good again. He cheated you, made a bad karma, and was thinking this person is stupid, I cheated him, so now you have double bad karmas. So those who will do, they will suffer. So, inner yoga, inner alert, cetana. Chetan hoja re mushafir, mushafir means traveller, so we are the traveller, travelling through the entire universe. It is not sure that you will come to this planet again. Maybe somewhere on a planet in a different form, there's a life in astral form, or somewhere else, or you will come here. Chetan means awake. Awake, oh traveler, wake up, you are sleeping, wake up, wake up. Why? Your vehicle is coming, your train is coming, your bus is coming, your aeroplane is coming. Wake up, be conscious, be alert. And that's why, you know, children in the school, when you are sitting like this, your master will come and pull the ear up to wake you up. Without interest, without concentration, you can learn nothing. You will lose all. Gadi aane wali hai. The vehicle is coming, and gadi jaane wali hai. It will go away. It will fly away, and you will miss everything. What will you miss? You will miss that beautiful human life which was given for God realization, but you fell into the material life and sensual enjoyment, greed, anger, hate, jealousy, and what not more. Therefore, observe yourself constantly. When you meditate, look into your inner mirror. You will see your clear picture. The inner mirror of your heart, in the heart is the mirror of your consciousness, and the projector of your intellect will project the picture in your citta, and you will see what kind of karma you have, how angry you are, you lost, you lost. Yogī, yatī, koi mehnat karke bove, bhajan kī baḍī. Yogī, yatī, mehnat karke, with great practice trying, above bhajan kī badī, create a beautiful garden of the bhajan, the spirituality. Yeh man bandar bada harami. But this mind is a very stupid, bad monkey. Palme badi bigadi. Within no time, it will destroy the whole beautiful garden. That is your mind. Yogi, yati, koi mehnat karke, bove bhajan ki badi. Ye man bandar bada harami, palme badi bigadi. Sada bhai ye man bada anadi. Samjāyon samje nahī̃, mūrak nī̃ calāvaḍī. Sādhāvai, ye mana baḍā annaḍī. Bin mukh charo charay raat din. Man ke maut ne hota hai. Mind has no mouth. Man ke mūh nahīṁ hotā hai. Bin mukh charo charay raat din. Phir bhi din aur raat kaṭā rehtā hai. Desire hai. Bin mukh charo charāy rāt din. Phir bhi bhukh ne kaadi. Arey, man thanay kain keun. Bhais keun ke pāḍī. Oh my mind, what should I say to you? Buffalo? Or the call of the buffalo? See, this man is a fat bull. See, this man is a fat bull. He pulls the cart of the world. He goes blind in the dark and runs away from the things that are there. See, this man is a big fool. This mind becomes a big ox, a very strong ox. And pulling the coach of the whole saṃsāra and running like a blind race, they are running to and will fall into the trap of the desires. Oh, my brother sādhus, this mind is so stupid, so foolish. Always I try to explain and explain. Such an ignorant, stupid one that... always goes down, down, and down. Therefore, Chet, chet, abh jīva gyānī avasar jāve, guru samajāve. So chet, chet, ava jīva gyānī. O ignorant soul, wake up. Now, Gurudev is explaining this to you. Avsar Javeri, this time will go away. Therefore, chetan ho jāre mūsha fir, gāḍī āne vālī hai. Awake inside. Be alert. Love thyself first. Excuse thyself first. Forgive thyself first. Create śānti, peace within thyself. Contentment within thyself. Don't expect from anyone from outside. They will come and say, "I love you." How long? As long as I can, then I will leave you. How? Bye-bye. Kai chalā jāī, basarī. Om tatsa. Therefore, observe, observe your inner self. What kind of sādhānā am I doing? You are doing mantra, and you are angry because someone was not good to you. You are meditating, and you are going shopping mentally to buy samosas. No, your chitta is in the saṃśaya, not with God, not in the heart. So that's called eternal yoga, sādhanā yoga in daily life. And I wish you all the best, dear brothers and sisters. God bless you, God protect you, and God... create the divine energy and divine consciousness within you. Boli Śrī Deep Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān, Alak Puruṣa Mahādev, Deveśvar Mahādev, Dharma Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Gurudev, Om Śānti, Śānti,... Hari Om. Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ, sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu, mā kaścid duḥkha-bhāg bhavet. Oṁ śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ.
