Surrender and be free

A spiritual discourse on integrating yoga with daily life and awakening cosmic energy.

"You may miss your meal, but do not miss your sādhanā."

"Practicing your different sādhanās, your different kriyās, your chakras can only be purified. And chakras can begin to receive the cosmic energy when your citta-vṛtti is purified."

Swami Maheshvarananda addresses a live and online audience from an ashram in Rajasthan. He explores the disciplined practice of spiritual techniques as daily yoga, explaining how ancient yogis attained higher consciousness and astral travel. The talk emphasizes the consequences of attachment and desire, contrasting the bondage of worldly life with the liberation found through surrendering to the Guru's guidance and purifying the mind.

Adoration to the Holy Lotus Feet of Gurudev, Bhagavān Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī, Devādidev Śiva Svarūpa, Deveśvara Mahādeva, and our beloved Ṣaṭ Gurudev, Hindu Dharma Samrāja, Śrī Svāmī Madhavānandajī Mahārāja. Dear brothers and sisters, all who are sitting here and those who are with me now through this webcast around the world. This blessing is coming to you from Om Śrī Viśvadīp Gurukul, Swāmī Maheśvarānanda Āśrama, Education and Research Centre, Jāḍaṇa, District Pālī, Rājasthān. To those who have a birthday, I wish you a happy birthday, and I wish you all a very good evening—or, if you have morning, then a very good morning or afternoon. The topic is: Yoga and daily life, Kuṇḍalinī and Chakras—the awakening of the cosmic energy within our body while practicing yoga and daily life. What do I mean here about yoga and daily life? It means disciplined, regular, and systematic practice of your favorite spiritual techniques. That is yoga and daily life. You may miss your meal, but do not miss your sādhanā. The question was this: how to awaken this cosmic energy in our body so that we can achieve higher consciousness? How to travel from the unconscious to the subconscious, to the conscious, to higher conscious, and to cosmic consciousness? For that, in ancient times, the yogīs were practicing for thousands and thousands of years. They were capable of living long. At that time, they led a very natural and healthy way of life, a very disciplined life without tensions. There were no tensions; there was no question of high blood pressure or low pressure. There was no pressure from social life either—economic, nor political, nor any different kind of pressure. It was only a relaxed, happy life. Yogīs, through yogic sādhanā—many yogīs who had different kinds of techniques—through those techniques they developed themselves slowly, slowly, day by day, month by month, year by year. Over years, they came to a higher level of consciousness. Finally, they managed to attain this consciousness, like physical consciousness. Consciously, through their yoga practice, they could levitate themselves—not with the physical body, but levitation through the astral body. You are doing this every day also, but in a different way. You sleep, and you begin to dream and go to different places. You are sleeping here in Jadan Ashram, and you are dreaming that you are in Vienna, Austria. You are sleeping here, and you are dreaming that you are in Ljubljana. Some are dreaming from the Nāḍīśāda. Some dream they are in Australia, and some are dreaming of making a wild safari in Africa. Who is there and who is here? The astral body is traveling. But the difference between dream and astral traveling is this: when you are in a dream, you cannot bring the reality back. Your dream becomes only a vision of your own desires, longing for your relations from the past, or an indication for the future. Suppose you are dreaming and you go to Jodhpur. You buy nice mangoes in one shop, but you have forgotten your money pocket there. The next day, you go to that shop and say, "I lost my money pocket here yesterday. I was here in a dream." Then he will say, "Yes, you can go to the psychiatric hospital, and you will find your money pocket treatment." Or you go to someone's house and you knock on the door. Nobody is there. You write the message: "Dear friend, dear brother, I was here, but unfortunately you were not at home. Please, when you come home, call me on this and this number." And you come back with the dream. Your friend is not calling you. You are disappointed. You telephone and you ask, "I left a number there." They say, "No, I didn't see anything. I was at home." It means in the dream, you cannot produce the karma. In svapna, karmas do not create bondage. In svapna, it is only your kāraṇa śarīra, your causal body, that is acting. But you cannot create the karmas. But if you go with the astral body, like an astronomer going into the sky, somewhere in space, and they bring the message down—similarly, those yogīs were capable of traveling in space, coming out of the body. But this physical body was still living, surviving with very little oxygen. After certain hours or days, again they came back into consciousness, and they brought the experiences. The next day, again they followed the path, again had the same experiences, and came back. Years and years, many, many years, every hour, minute, second... They were remembering: what happens on Monday? What happens in this month? What about the constellation of the stars? What is the influence of the different planets on this physical planet? Similarly, they were observing what happens to this soul when it goes out of the physical body into the astral world. It is said that the soul, when it goes out of the body, still has the bondage of attachment because people are burning in the fire of desires, the fire of attachment. Gurudev tells you, "Do not do this." Okay, but hiding, you are sitting here and thinking about somewhere else. Yes, you have freedom of thinking, but you have no freedom from the effect of that thinking which is against the Guru Vākya, Guru Tattva, or what those ṛṣis told. So this is called mohaka bandhana. Vāsanā. Desires are such a big fire, day and night. Especially humans are burning in this fire of different desires: money, wealth, positions, friends, house. "I like this. I don't like this." Liking and disliking is one of the biggest problems of humans. "I change my mind. I like that. I will do this." Okay, go and do it, but the consequences you have to suffer one day—maybe not now on this physical level, but the day when you will come out, no one can go with you. No more telephone, no more SMS, no more emails, and females neither, a male out of this. That will lead you. When the soul departs from this body, then the whole chapter of the whole life comes in front of you. You have to go. You see what you did, what you did not do, what you did not follow from your parents, what you did not follow from your friends, you did not follow your wife's instructions, you did not follow your husband's instructions, what saṅkalpa you made when you took sannyāsa in front of the yajña, or what kind of saṅkalpa you made in front of the Agni Devatā when you were married. What kind of saṅkalpa did you make in front of the fire when you took the janeū, the upanayana saṃskāra? Brahmachārī, vidyārthī student, when you get the upanayana saṃskāra, janeū, then you are titled. In this, Niyama rules, regulations of human life. Everything that you do will influence your body, your consciousness, and your soul. It depends how you will travel then through the astral world. What you will see when you are there—you will see what you don't want to see. You bought a very nice car, very beautiful. You don't let anybody touch it. Every day, you clean your car nicely. Now you are in the astral world, and some crazy man opens your car and drives very roughly. You say, "Oh God, why is he sitting in my car?" But you cannot stop him or her. Hard work. You put a lot of money in the bank. And now they go and take money out and go for gambling and drinking, and you say, "Oh my God, did I earn money for this? What will happen with this all?" You will see, you cannot do anything, but you will suffer. Your very dear wife, what she's doing now, you will—you can't believe what's happening. Or your dear husband, you see now the reality of your husband. You say, "Oh, when I knew this, yes, my dear." That time the wounds open. You will say, "Better I would have followed the Gurudev." Therefore, it is said: moha (ignorance), attachment, truth, lying, greediness—making people stupid. Try to get out everything and escape hiding. No honesty, then day by day you are creating complications, minute by minute with your thinking, creating complications. You may hide now, but then you can't hide, you know? You cannot hide from yourself. Similarly, then you cannot hide yourself. Your soul has to go through this fire. Therefore, through the ṛṣi vākya, yogīs' vākya, guru vākya—when Gurudev tries to explain something to you and you feel discomfort, that is a treatment. But it is said: Gurudev was so merciful, he cut off all the bandages of my attachment. My restless mind is full of desires. Gurudev gave the treatment and turned it upside down to the other direction. Where? To God. Only that one satya: ekaṁ brahma dvitīyaṁ nāsti. Otherwise, you can do as many pūjā as you like, as many prayers as you like, as many pilgrimages as you like, as many times kumbhaka and recaka and pūraka, bandhas. All are the bandhana. Release this all. Nirbandhana. Mahāprabhujī said: "Śaraṇa parāyaṇa ho jāve to nirbandhana hoī bisare." When one completely surrenders, then you are free in the whole universe. So, practicing your different sādhanās, your different kriyās, your chakras can only be purified. And chakras can begin to receive the cosmic energy when your citta-vṛtti is purified. Therefore, Patañjali Ṛṣi said, "Discipline is the key to success." Discipline makes a man great. Through this discipline, your vṛttis will be purified and directed to the supreme, to the conscious. Such a soul, when we leave this body, will come to the light. Others have to go through the complications.
